Gag Reflexes Stop Me From Eating Fruit
Sep 18, 2014
Ever since I was little, I have had a difficult time eating fruit. Before people start saying, "You are just picky, just try it." I would like to explain the struggle. Because, the Struggle is real.
I love the flavor of fruit, I love the color and every time I see one I just want to eat it. However, when I do eat it, my gag reflexes stop me from swallowing and simply force me to regurgitate (Gross, I know). This is not all fruit though. I have always been able to eat apples and oranges. I can eat cherries but I don't really enjoy them, especially the fake cherries that are candied and get stuck with a plastic stem, also known as Maraschino Cherries (Bleh!). I am now 20 years old and can proudly say that I have retried many fruit and can now eat Watermelon, Strawberries, and even grapes. But only in small doses.
Fruit is the only thing that is blocked by my gag reflexes. I can eat vegetables all day every day. I do hope that one day I can look a banana or peach in the eye, eat it, and not have to worry about gagging.
I want to talk to a Doctor who specializes in these types of things. But I wanted to know if I am the only one with this problem, and just simply what the internet thinks about this.

I was wondering if anybody suffers with abdominal pain and nausea from eating fruit. I decided i would try to eat some fruit today as everything else i have tried to eat has caused a flare up. I ate half a banana and a tangerine early afternoon and since then it has left me feeling really uncomfortable my stomach is hurting and getting pain all under my ribs and right side as well as feeling nausea. Just seems like everything i try to eat doesn't agree with me i am seriously now thinking of not eating food altogether and just drink plenty of fluids because it's just not worth eating to feel like this everyday when i do it

I am what my doctor describes as a perfectly healthy 32 year female. I have a hiatal hernia but that may be beside the point. I had been on Paxil 20 up until September. At the end of October, I began feeling nauseous after eating and vomiting after eating supper. I do not feel better after vomiting and find it almost impossible the eat for 24 hours following. I feel incredibly exhausted after 3pm, and when I feel ill it's at or around 5pm. My blood tests are perfect, not pregnant, and up to this point generally healthy. I am looking for ideas, other experiences, and general info to find out and 'fix' what is all of a sudden wrong with me!

I am a 21 year old female, I am 5'3 and weigh around 103-104lb (7 stone 5-6lb).
I used to be just under 10 stone a few years ago and crash dieted to lose the weight. I wanted to be 9 stone, then 8 and a half, then 8, then I was happy bouncing between 7.10-7.12 for a few months. But recently it has dropped, I was fine at 7 and a half, but as it's gone down I've wanted it to stay down. I weigh myself everyday before eating/drinking. If my weight is at 7.5 I'm not too bad, but jf it js at 7.6 I panic that I'm getting fat and will keep gaining. I try not to eat until my evening meal, which I always make sure I have, though sometimes end up snacking before if I start to feel too hungry. I have 2 cups of tea a day with 2 sugars in each to try and suppress my hunger. I also worry that when I start eating, I won't stop. Sometimes I will have a big takeaway, medium pizza all to myself, continue eating it even if it hurts, and then half an hour after, continue eating. I never make myself sick/take laxatives and wouldn't, but I sometimes try not to eat all day in case I lose control and keep eating and eating. I have anxiety/depression/ocd issues anyway and I'm worried I may have some sort of eating disorder too.

I am a 42 year old mom of 2 boys. I have been healthy most of my life. In 2011, I noticed some numbness in my left hand and it seemed to be "clumsy". My mom has MS so it scared me. Considering my family history, my family doc sent me to neuro and to have an MRI. The MRI and my exam turned out to be normal. The neuro said it could be my ulnar nerve. 2012, another episode and this time with worst headache ever and blurred vision. Once again I checked out fine. Then in July 2014 while on vacation, I became dizzy and started to stagger. I went to an urgent care and they told me I had vertigo. After that the vertigo/clumsy remained, and I started having myoclonic jerking of my muscles and headache. I was checked by neuro when I got back from vacation. The vertigo went away but muscle jerking remained. Normal exam and bloodwork. August 21, it came back the vertigo/clumsy feeling, headache, my legs being sensitive to touch, and I occasionally repeat things when speaking like my brain can't remember. I went to a recommended neurosurgeon. His exam revealed Babinski reflex, Hoffmann reflex and brisk reflexes. It was symmetrical on both sides He ordered an MRI. I couldn't get in for almost 2 weeks. The waiting is making me crazy.

This is my first post here, im a 14 year old male, 175 pounds (and losing weight at a steady pace, i've been working out since i was fat and 210 pounds a few months ago), and about 6 feet tall (i play basketball) and i want to know if i eat a large amount of fruits or vegetables i can get unhealthy. i eat maybe about a stalk or two of celery, a handful of baby carrots, an apple or an orange, a pear, about an eighth of a watermelon, a couple strawberries (maybe), yogurt, sometimes a vine of grapes, some sweet peppers and a plum or peach every day or two, just as snacks. i very rarely eat sweets although i occasionally eat meat and cheese during meals, and some eggs or grain/oats/whatever cereal for breakfast. i don't really follow the 8 glasses of water a day, i just drink when im thirsty tbh. i workout about 4-6 days a week and play basketball, and i've been wanting to know if this may be too much food for one day, and if this can make me unhealthy or fat.

I bought a fruit pot from a store earlier today, whilst eating the fruit I noticed red stains on some of the fruit which looked like blood. I didn't realise to I eat half the pot so whatever it was I probably swallowed whatever it was. I also currently have a fear of HIV so I'm anxious that if this was blood I could be at risk of HIV. could someone please help and just give me some advice, is this a possible route for transmission?

I can only eat very, very small amounts of fruit and vegetables--even organic ones, otherwise I get a headache 8 to 12 hours later. Does anyone else suffer from this condition? Is there anything that can be done to lessen the effect?
Cooking the fruit or veggies does nothing, and I am desperate to find a solution.

In the past, I have spent quite a lot of money getting advice from a private Nutritionist. She advised me not to eat any raw fruit and vegetables but to eat them cooked only. Also not to eat salad as lettuce in particular can take a while to pass through the digestive system. Also she said that wheat is not a good form of fibre but Rye is better but Rye bread is usually heavy, more like a house brick. Rye crackers are O.K. sometimes but won't make a good sandwich.
Yesterday, when I had a bad flare up, I thought that I have got to rethink my diet yet again.
I have been eating wholemeal bread but it seems to make me really bloated and uncomfortable.
I am going to start taking probiotics again but not sure which ones are best.

I have been dieting for 7 months with an hour a day at the gym. I have dropped 55 lbs. I have hit a major wall and don't know what the problem is. I started to really hard core track my food intake. I have added a lot more fruit to my diet and the app I am using keeps telling me I am over my sugar intake. Is the sugar in fruit really being a negative impact on my diet success?
