Weight :: Can You Be Overweight And Healthy?
Nov 1, 2014
I'm a 31 year old man. I'd always been slim but about a year ago decided I'd had enough of looking slim and weedy and decided to gain some weight. Since then I've gained just over 2 stone (30 pounds) and my BMI is now overweight (I'm 5'10 and about 186 pounds). I've gained the weight by eating bigger meals and having late night snacks.
Despite outgrowing lots of my clothes, for the first time in my life I'm actually happy about the way my (bigger) body looks. I do find exercise harder now so clearly my fitness levels have dropped. However, I do try to still exercise a couple of times a week and my blood pressure (tested recently) is healthy.
I really want to know if, despite now being overweight, I can still be healthy. I really don't want to lose weight as I don't want to go back to being skinny.

I am a diabetic type 2 patient, and I am overweight by about 75 pounds. I am eating 2 carb units at breakfast, 3-4 at lunch, and 3-4 at dinner. I want to start exercising but I don't know what workout would work best for me? I haven't done an exercise program since I was in high school so this will be a big deal for me. Is there exercises that I shouldn't be doing that would be bad since I am a diabetic?

I am in Birth control hell. I just recently read that Birth control is ineffective for women who are overweight. My situation seems miserable. I am a 28 year old woman who is on Ortho Novum 1/35. I am 5'8 and a 180 pounds. This is fifteen pounds overweight. So my birth control is in effective, I am assuming. Let me just say before I started Birth Control, I had PCOS, this was due to a combination of factors. Cross-Country running, lose of Menses, and overall bad diet. However, what is interesting is that when I was running I was at the target weight for BMI calculator at 160 pounds. I do not feel that 160 pounds is an ideal weight for me. I had a loss of my menstrual cycle. Overall I felt like I was too damn skinny. Now at 180 pounds I feel like I am a little healthier. I am wondering if maybe the extra weight is due to muscle mass in my legs. Forty pounds of muscle in each leg. That equals out to eighty pounds, and a hundred pounds from overall body weight. Maybe I should do some kind of exercise like pilates that focuses on small muscles instead of the large muscle. I am just worried, because putting it discreetly it looks like I might be more sexually active.

I am 5'6" and 124 lbs, female, age 36. I eat and then have a blood sugar 2 hours later that is 5 or lower (Canadian blood sugar scale). I wouldn't care about the numbers except I start to feel sick when that happens. I have low blood pressure, usually 102/58 mmHg. What can I do to stop this?

This has been going on for about 2 years now, I was 26 then, now 28 (male) I went to the cardio when it started and nothing was ever picked up on the ekg so i had a stress (ekg) test and a echocardiogram, cardiac said I had a strong healthy heart with no blockages but did have a small murmur caused by a very mild mitral valve leak but it was nothing at all to worry about and that I needed to relax and exercise... fast forward another year and I start having a lot of pacs, or what feels like a lot, like 20 a day that I feel... so it gets my anxiety going and I go back to the cardio, still nothing picked up on the ekg, so for my peace of mind he's says we'll do another echocardiogram just to make sure the valve leak wasn't getting worse. Everything come back good on that and he said no need for another echo for 3-5 years... so he give me a 10 day event monitor where we finally figured out that I'm having pacs, he says they are harmless and no need to worry about them. My resting heart rate avgs between 50-60 which he said was good but with it being low it could be allowing the extra beats to fire off occasionally. I had blood work like 3 different times and everything come back good. So to this day I still have no idea what's causing the pacs, the only thing i can relate it to is it seems to happen more after eating so i got back on acid reflux meds when that spell started and it seemed to help, now I may go a week or longer without a single pac but then I might 2-3 a day for a few days and then they go away again as suddenly as they came... it really makes me think something I'm eating is triggering them. The reason I'm here today is because the devil makes sure to throw everything in front of me that will get me to worrying, latest example being the mma guy dying from heart trouble... so I go straight back to reading about my pacs and start reading stuff where they may cause afib, so now I'm literally a wreck scared I'm going to end up with afib. They say in a normal heart pacs are completely harmless but I worry that mines not normal bcuz of the valve leak, he said I didn't have mitral prolapse just that the valve wasn't closing as tight so it was slightly leaky but of no concern. Someone please give me some reassurance.

So, I have a gluten allergy and therefore cannot consume most of the typical grains. Traditional bread is typically made of wheat, and is also processed, so it's not very nutritious in my eyes. Gluten free bread is also processed but made from different flours such as rice, corn, and almond, etc. My question is, which do you think is "healthier" if you had to pick a side. With gluten free alternatives, there is still the presence of high calorie and high glycemic index foods within these GF products. So which one wins? Obviously I can't eat traditional bread but should I give up these GF alternatives and just opt for a more raw lifestyle? This is something I've wondered about for some time now. I'm newly out of college for nutrition and unfortunately it is something I never got to ask any of my professors.

On 8/14/2015 I went in for a tubal ligation (I have 3 children), I received a pregnancy test the morning of and continued on with the surgery. All went fine. I returned to my Doctor for the 2 week follow up and told her I had missed my period. I figured the recovery of surgery backtracked the cycle. She tested me in the office and the test was positive!I had conceived prior to surgery and was to early to detect any HCG levels I guess. I didn't have any blood work prior either. Now I don't know how to proceed.I have no idea if it will be healthy or abnormal/ectopic, general anesthesia, abdominal incisions, uterus filled w gas...this doesn't sound good at all for a beginning of a pregnancy! When can anything be determined?

After being NWB for 7 weeks, I've struggled with the PWB phase in that I am moving through it very slowly. I'm 5 weeks into it since my cast was removed and only recently mastered using a walker. It took me forever to get me off the knee scooter and on 2 feet. Last week I thought I was ready to move to using a walking cane and over the weekend used it a little bit while out. I am now in excruciating pain. I haven't really struggled with horrible pain thus far so I am a little concerned. I realize moving from a walker to a cane is increasing the amount of weight on my foot, so is that probably why I am in so much pain? I am now back to using the walker and feeling a bit discouraged that I couldn't handle the cane. I am further discouraged that I am moving so slowly through the PWB phase. Many talk on these boards of it taking only a couple of weeks before they are fully weight bearing, but I am in week 5 and I don't see being close to that yet. Any words of "your experience isn't so abnormal" would be helpful.
