Urology :: Frequent Urination And Bladder Not Emptying
Dec 23, 2014
I have frequent urination, and my bladder doesn't empty completely, therefore I feel the need to go right after I went, and sometimes I take a very long time trying to get out what I have in the bladder.
I also have constipation, and strain on the toilet. I also was frequently going to the bathroom for different reasons and I'm stressed out.
I understand these two can play a role in my bladder problems. Is this true? If so, what can I do to heal? Bladder training? Pelvic floor muscle exercises?
Will taking a drug that empties my bladder be helpful in the long term?
Thanks.

I am posting on behalf of my partner. He is otherwise healthy and 24 years old.
Since mid January he noticed that he was urinating more frequently, particularly at night. He would be getting up 4-5 times a night. He had no other symptoms.
He went to his GP who then referred him to the GUM clinic. They done all the relevant swabs and looked at his urine under a microscope. They said that there was 'something' in the urine but they didn't specify what. They prescribed him with a one week course of doxycycline antibiotics and diagnosed it as non specific urethritis.
His symptoms went when he finished his course of antibiotics. However, a few days after treatment had finished, the frequent urination came back.
He returned to the GUM clinic. They informed him that all his results came back normal (no STIs). They also looked at a new sample of urine under the microscope and said that it looked fine. They then referred him back to his GP.
The GP said that the infection might need stronger antibiotics so prescribed him a two week course of doxycyline. They also performed a blood test which came back all normal with no further action needed.
His symptoms had started to go and he wasn't urinating as frequently, but said that he still felt like he hadn't emptied his bladder properly after he had been to the toilet.
The GP sent him for an ultrasound scan. The doctor performing the scan said his kidneys looked fine.
The results came back yesterday. The GP said that after he had emptied his bladder during the scan there was still 160ml of water left behind meaning that his bladder isn't emptying correctly. He now has to go back for another ultrasound where the scans can be looked at by a specialist bladder department.
Since these results he says he feels like its 'come back' and has needed to urinate frequently again. There is clearly an issue but do you think it's possible that psychology could be worsening the symptoms I.e. When he thinks about it he needs to go more often?
He was diagnosed and successfully treated for an STI infection a few years ago and his GP said that the infection could have left scarring in his urethra which means that it may be limiting how much urine can come out...
Does anyone have any idea would could be causing this? As you can understand his mind has jumped to the worst conclusion (tumours/cancer) - would these show up on an ultrasound? I also suggested that it could be prostate problems but I'm not sure how likely this is because of his age? The doctors haven't performed any examinations on his prostate yet.
It will probably be another 3 weeks+ for the new scan and results and it is starting to have an impact on his quality of life with all the not knowing.

I have been dealing with anxiety my whole life and have had off and issues with emptying my bladder. I will use the restroom and will either feel like i need to go again right after or will experience burning then I know that it didn't completely empty, will go back and be able to go a little more then the burning will fade. I have had this for a long time and wonder if I could have possibly been born with a minor abnormality causing it or the chronic anxiety not letting the muscles relax enough to empty my bladder. I am constantly told I have a bladder infection by doctors and think this might be the reason. I do experience a tiny burn at the end of the stream but no other bladder infection symptoms. Unless they are diagnosing it solely because of hematuria, which i do have a minor kidney issue that causes microscopic blood in my urine. Does anyone else with anxiety suffer from this? Could it just be the muscles too tense to let the bladder empty?

I am not sure what I have, but I have the classic symptoms of BPH.
Weak urine stream
Difficulty starting urination
Stopping and starting while urinating
Dribbling at the end of urination
Frequent or urgent need to urinate ( I go and then 5 minutes later I need to go again)
Increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia)
Straining while urinating
About a month ago, I began using an additive that changes the pH level of water to Alkaline called Alkalife.
Below are the ingredients.
Distilled water, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide.
I know that the hydroxide are toxic to the body in large doses. It makes sense that these might the cause of my urinating problems.
Does anyone know if those ingredients can cause urination problems?

During the night I have to go to the loo 5 or 6 times this is despite not having anything to drink after 7pm. does anyone else have similar problem and have they successfully been able to do anything about it. Has anyone heard of urology surgeon Neil Barber and the "urolift" procedure and would be most grateful to hear from anyone who has undergone this procedure

Hello,
I heard that you should drink half your weight in oz of water a day. I did that, and now I can't stop feeling like I have to urinate. I only urinate a little and now I have a discomfort on my lower left side somewhat into my back. This has been going on for the past 2 days. Should I go see my doctor or is this something that will go away?

I am a 43 year old male. I have been experiencing a weak bladder on and off for several years but in the past year the symptoms have got worse. I am going to the toilet every couple of hours or so in the day and at least once in the night. When my bladder gets full it starts to ache and when I wake in the morning my bladder feels full and is aching. I have had blood tests, urine tests, physical examination and an ultrasound. The doctor concluded that he didn't really know what the problem was but said it could be an over active bladder or stress, or a bit of both- nothing to do with my prostate. I don't want to become reliant on prescription medicine - has anyone got any ideas what this could be or alternatives to prescription medicine.

Does anyone here get bladder pressure and/or frequent urination with anxiety? Or perhaps related to Perimenopause?

I am a 22 year old female
I am writing today in hopes to find an answer to a recent aggravating ongoing problem that is taking a toll on my everyday life.
From what i remember starting around November 2014 a symptom of frequent urination suddenly appeared and i started going to the bathroom 10-15 times a day. The around Thanksgiving time I had a burning, foul odor when using the restroom along with the need to constantly urinate.
I had a few UTIs before, trichomoniasis and chlamydia at an earlier age but were all treated effectively. I went to the doctor about two weeks later because i was busy in school with finals and figured it would be okay until i was able to visit the doctor. I was given rounds of antibiotics, everything from cipro, bactrim, amoxicillin, etc and that took away the burning sensation but never the constant need to urinate.
I have seen a urologist and after doing ultrasounds and various exams he prescribed me of what i believe was detrol for overactive bladder but it gave me dry mouth and did nothing to assist this frequency of urination.
He figured it was tight pelvic floor muscles and recommended me to a PT that specializes in this. Over the months the constant urge got better on its on before seeing the physical therapists because before it was so bad i couldn't stay in the school library without being embarrassed of keep getting up to use the bathroom. I sustained from sex during this time and recently had sex a week ago and this definitely reignited by symptoms.
I have visited the PT about five days ago for the first time and the exercises seem to be not working.
I am so frustrated and confused as to whether this symptom is a cause of an irritated bladder, pelvic floor muscles, or anxiety.

I am a girl who has had this problem for a year and a half. When I hold it, it burns, when I urinate it burns, and after it burns, hurts, and feels so uncomfortable sometimes. I have seen so many doctors who specialise this things. It's not an infection and there's no bacteria. But the weird thing is, is sometimes it doesn't burn when I urinate or even after. I could have a really bad day, then the next day it could be better. It goes on and off. I have tried a food diary, and there's nothing that can cause this. When I have cookies, crackers, candy, things with sugar on top or things with salt on top, it burns more. It is very frustrating and confusing. No one ever understands my pain and burning I go through everyday. I cry sometimes. I have drank cranberry juice but it still hasn't helped. I have also tried many products to put on the skin but that doesn't help. I really don't know if it's on the outside or inside. But, my doctor told me that it could me muscle, that are to tight. So now i'm doing exercising n relaxing those muscles. I really don't know if it's the answer but has anyone ever dealt with kind of the same problem I have? Has anyone done the muscle theraby?

Today morning I waked up after sleeping about 9 hours (without going to the bathroom and after drinking a lot before the sleep). After going to the bathroom I felt pretty acute pain in my lower abdominal. It became milder during the day, still preserving though and appearing sometimes with more strength while changing position (sitting, or standing) and also reminding about itself sometimes after urinating (but not always). It kind of feels like muscle pain and earlier could be felt also while touching the muscles close to the penis. Now it is way milder, but didn't go. Can this be a result of muscle stretch or something like this?

From 5-6 days I have been experiencing frequent and excessive urination. The urine is totally clear. And as soon as I finish urinating I feel that I want to urinate more with the feeling that the urine gets collected above the privates. The urine is colourless. And all my urine reports have been clear with specific gravity of 1.010-1.012 and some 4-5 hpf of pus and epithelial cells

I already have a low to medium risk for diabetes. I have PCOS and Hashimoto's disease, am overweight, And my grandmother had diabetes (but is currently in remission). I ask, because I've been looking At a few online sites, and symptoms I've had for years (or even most of my life) seem to be dead giveaways for diabetes. Fatigue, frequent urination (including at night) way more than the recommended 8 times a day, I recently put on weight for no obvious reason, I am constantly hungry (if not starving), even after eating, and recently I've been very thirsty.
I've been tested a few times, and when I was pregnant they checked too, and it's always come back negative. Could I be boarder line? Or do I just have a bunch of symptoms I'll never get rid of?

Since I had CABG 4 (quad by-pass heart surgery) 10 years ago I have (too) frequent urinations. These aren't just a false urges, but the real McCoy. At night I have to get up 4-5 times. When I get up in the morning usually around 6 AM I have to go, afterwards in less than 6-7 minutes the urge is there again. I have measured typical urinations in the daytime to be usually 5-6 ounces. Last week on a long trip that required a full days drive I was within 20 miles of home and on a long bridge tunnel system in heavy 4-lane traffic when the urge hit (big-time.) I had made a rest stop about 40 miles back, but the urge was back. There was no way to stop and it could no longer be held. As I entered the tunnel I managed to shift a newspaper under my bottom in order to maybe not soak the seat. Fortunately, I had a large mouth empty water bottle, which I managed to arrange (I thought.) In the long tunnel and very heavy traffic at 55 mph I gave it a go, which was about 65% successful. My meds are Simvastatin, Metoprolol, Welchol and Tamsulosin (Flomax.)

Since doctors don't seem to want to help me figure out what's wrong, I'm trying to investigate my various symptoms to find potential diseases to rule out.
For the past two and a half years, I've had a problem with frequent urination. No incontinence of any kind, but I tend to pee on average 12-20 times a day. Sometimes I'll be up one or two times at night, sometimes more and sometimes not at all. I DO drink quite a bit of fluid. I tend to average 50-100+ ounces of fluid a day. Usually once a day I'll have a cup of tea, but I don't drink a ton of coffee or any soda at all. I am always thirsty, feel dehydrated all the time, mouth is dry, lips are chapped, light headed and dizzy often, even on the days I'm drinking 100+ ounces of water. I work in an office and don't do anything strenuous that results in sweating. When I do pee, sometimes it's only ten or fifteen minutes before I have to go again. Most of the time, I'm producing a full volume of pee, almost never is it just a few drops or a little bit. My urinalysis and cultures come back normal.
Went to the gynecologist today, he said my bladder is working fine and that when I pee, I am emptying my bladder all the way. His suggestion was to drink less. I'm thinking a 31 year old woman who does not have diabetes or a UTI that's lasted for 2.5 years shouldn't not only have this constant need to pee, but also this constant need to drink and feeling of dehydration. I went to a neuroendocrinologist because I truly believe with my other symptoms, I have some kind of pituitary problem going on (Cushings and/or GHD) but he laughed and blew me off because Hey, it's rare, therefore you don't have it.
Should I ask my PCP about looking into MS? In addition to the frequent urination, I have a great deal of cognitive issues (memory loss / retention problems, concentration problems, shortened attention span, sometimes can't speak properly), depression and anxiety, eye issues (wicked light sensitive, blurry vision, hurts to look up or to the sides), stiff and painful joints and muscles, muscle weakness, occasional tingling in hands or feet, INCREDIBLY fatigued, dizziness and lightheadedness, vertigo, occasional balance issues, and trembling / vibrations in body.

About 3 weeks ago I had a brief encounter of unprotected vaginal sex. it lasted about 15 seconds. The last day or so, I have had the urge to urinate often. Maybe about every 15 minutes. I go a small amount and then its ok, for another 15 minutes or so. I see no other symptoms...Could It be an STD?

I'm 19 and a student. I have urgency to urinate when I am in lecture room. I am okay for 20min after that it feels like I really need to use toilet to urinate. This never stops and and every time I think what can I do to stop this and when I'm in lecture I can't concentrate as the fear of peeing my self occurs which numbs my brain.. I try to distract myself but doesn't work. Plus I urinate before the lecture and I drink less water so I don't but still it does. I hardly drink water or anything when I'm at university. Is there anything I can do to help this stop? I really need some help cuz it feels like prison as I can't think or do anything throughout the day..

i am a 74 year old male and had my THR one week ago. There is no pain, a little discomfort, and I am walking with two sticks. The only problem is having to get up 5 or 6 times in the night to go to the bathroom. I never had this before. I am OK during the day. Could it be because of the catheter I had for 2 days, or medication? Has anyone had anything similar?
