Trimethoprim :: Horrendous Skin Rash Over The Entire Body
Jun 30, 2008
Was prescribed Trimethoprim for a UTI. 7 days into a 28 day course I have developed an horrendous skin rash over the entire body. Some are small blisters which are quite sore. Having not visited a doctor's surgery for three years and having never taken antibiotics before this is not a good introduction to modern medicine.....I will have to on the verge of death before I visit a GP again....

I was given Trimethoprim (on its own) to treat a water infection and a cough, and about 20 minutes after taking it, my top lip swelled up and my mouth went numb. I also had blotchy, red rash on my chest and palpitations.
Turns out I am actually allergic to Trimethoprim...this was the first time I had ever been prescribed it. A few other people I have spoke to, also said that they have had bad reactions to this medicine.

I knew that I was allergic to Amoxicillin, but if you are too, beware accepting the use of
TRIMETHOPRIM for urinary infections.
Firstly, after taking only 2 of the tablets, I had a red itchy rash on my feet - one was worse than the other. During the next 5 weeks, my feet rashed then burned, then blistered badly. They were very painful, and when the blisters eventually went, they left patches of raw skin on the soles of my feet which meant that I could not shower or bath because of the stinging. Now, almost 6 weeks later they are still peeling like mad and they have numerous patches of new pink skin both on the soles and sides of my feet..Each symptom was dealt with as it occurred, but I did suffer an awful lot of real pain and discomfort. The urine infection cleared up on its own a few days after I stopped taking the drug.

I was prescribed this yesterday (UTI) and didn't think anything of it as I've never had a problem with antibiotics before. Oh dear, within about 6 hours, I was feeling very hot and itchy. I was covered head to foot in a nasty red (looked like sunburn), angry rash, had a sore throat and felt fluey. Didn't feel sick though, which is unusual for me as I have a very sensitive digestive system.
Called my GP this morning who told me to STOP taking it immediately (only taken 2 of a 6 tablet course). I'm hoping this reaction will subside now I've stopped taking it but reading the comments hear, it sounds as if it can take a while To top it all, I'm now going to have to take another antibiotic and the UTI is no better.

I had a 8 day course of these antibiotics and after taking them I have felt 100% worse. I feel weak, muscle pains all over my body, no appetite, back pains, my anxiety has gone really high I have headaches and not able to do day to day things. I'm scared that this isn't going to pass. I have been off the antibiotics nearly 3 weeks and these symptoms are not getting any better. Can anyone help me and tell me when this will pass or start getting better?

Can this cause a severe rash all over the body?

My wife ( in her 60's) went to the NHS GP with cystitis and after a urine test, was prescribed Trimethoprim. Less than twenty four hours later she started to experience abdominal and back pain. She persisted with the Trimethoprim but the pain intensified. She said she had never felt so ill in her life and her skin was fiercely hot.We called NHS Direct and they questioned whether my wife had been to the gym, advised to drink plenty of water and to drink a particular fruit juice. She drank the juice and was almost immediately sick. Then, to help matters, the battery failed on my newly purchased thermometer.Later on Sunday night she felt really bad, couldn't sleep, couldn't drink , her body felt it was on fire and felt sick all the time. We then read the Trimethoprim leaflet that said these tablets should not be taken if there is a kidney complaint.I was on the verge of taking her diet to A&E at three o'clock in the morning.
First thing on Monday morning I got her to the surgery again and in spite of telling he receptionist how urgent the situation had become, we had to wait one and a half hours before having a consultation with ( another) doctor. By now the full urine analysis indicated a kidney disease against which Trimethoprim was ineffective and was given an alternative antibiotic - which (five days later) has now cleared the signs of the kidney problem. She has been ill for about two weeks, lost half a stone and can only eat small quantities of food - but at least she is eating again in small quantities.
After all this, I suggest the kidney infection developed very rapidly shortly after the first consultation and  Trimethoprim failed to tackle that problem. Now the side effects of the Trimethoprim have only just subsided we realise that the constant nausea, burning skin, sleeplessness,
body aches were due to the Trimethoprim. Coupled with the kidney pain, it explains why she has never felt so ill in her life. We would never entertain taking Trimethoprim ever again.
Should you suffer the symptoms of cystitis, I would recommend the full nature and extent of the problem is diagnosed without a four day delay,
the correct antibiotic is taken, don't take the advice of NHS direct without a second opinion and avoid Trimethoprim.

I've been dealing with this rash on my butt for a few years now. It only shows up in a sort of red "ring" where the cheeks touch. It's a little itchy (my anus is not itchy or red) but mostly just painful. Sometimes it will go away for about a week but it's generally there in some level of severity.
At the advise of a doctor (I went in about a year ago), I tried using clotrimazole 1% for two weeks at a time. It doesn't seem to do a whole lot of good.
Any ideas? I'm really tired of the near constant rash.

I wish I knew what this was, but I honestly don't know. I recently moved into an apartment in southern Indiana from Northern Indiana. Within the first week I started getting small itchy bumps on my hips, and my roommate did too. I had my fiance come spend a weekend here and she developed the same rash. After 3 months of living here, it has now spread to my hands, both the tops and the palms, my inner thighs, my penis, my legs, especially behind my knees, my arms, my chest, and my back. My face is still okay (thank god, I might have to leave work if it spreads there), but the itching is unbearable. The bumps aren't too noticeable and my leg hair covers most of them on my lower half, but they are there none the less. The itching is especially bad around my ankles and on my feet. I've scratched both feet raw in places, I can't sleep, showering is unbearable, and I guess the rash actually hurts for my fiance. I went to my parents' house for the weekend a while back and they didn't get the rash, oddly enough. My roommate has been to her university's on campus clinic and they didn't know what it was, but they prescribed her Triamcinolone Acetonide, which hasn't really helped anything but temporary relief from itching. It's not contact dermatitis, no one else in our complex seems to have this problem so I doubt it's the water, we have a pet rabbit but it's never been outside or around other animals, and none of our furniture is not made of anything that fleas or bedbugs could live in (water bed, air mattress, leather couch.) It's actually killing me right now as I type this, and I really really need some help with this.

I keep getting red, blotchy and sometimes dry skin on the side of my face that I sleep on (i.e. the one I rest on the pillow). It is usually there when I wake up in the morning and it's getting embarrassing because one side of my face is clear while the other one is red and blotchy. It extends to my neck occasionally too.

I have a red blotchy rash on my ring finger. It does not hurt nor burn. It is not where my ring is, it is above past my knuckle. It comes and goes.

I've just switched from 2.5 to 5mg Ramipril, when I suddenly had an allergic reaction.
Very swollen feet, ankles, wrists and hands.
Now the following day I'm covered in welts, hives and a rash.
My doctor has put me on a course of steroids and antihistamines, but my skin feels like it's still on fire!
Have been taking Andopoline for about 5 weeks, and was then prescribed Ramipril 2.5 two weeks ago, then up to 5mg last week.
Took the first 5mg on Thursday, and started getting the symptoms first thing Friday morning
Has anyone else suffered from this, and how long does it last?

I have been suffering from a rash on my ankles. The major symptoms I would say are a very itchy rash that waters when I scratch, and more prominently, 'dead' skin forms around my ankle and peels. The skin also seems to be getting tougher (maybe due to the scratching).
I have been to 2 doctors so far. The first felt it was contact dermatitis and gave me a corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) which cleared it up for some months but then it came back again. I've been to another doctor 2 weeks ago who gave me an antifungal cream (daktarin), but after 2 weeks of applying, I can't see any significant improvement to be honest. In fact, the infection spread to the left ankle only after I had started this treatment. I don't know if there's a connection. I would be seeing a specialist next if this treatment fails but I would like to have a good idea of what it might be.

For the past 3 months, my boyfriend and I have been battling body lice. I have never experienced something so awful and horrendous as this in my life. We have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of it...prescription meds...over the counter meds...industrial bombs....showers...showers...showers...laundering everyday...we have spent almost $1000.00! AND STILL NO RELIEF...ACTUALLY...IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE! I am at my wits and everything else's....END! I can't live like this anymore...covered in bites from head to toe...trying to "hide" them and pretend there's nothing wrong. I am contemplating "awful" things like gasoline...kerosine....anything that will KILL these things, because I am beginning to think they will live forever!

I have had burning skin, in several places, all over my body. It feels like I've been badly burned. it gets worse as the day progresses. I have tried topical treatments, but the pain is on the inside, therefore topicals have no effect. I have been to specialists, had several blood tests, now my doctor is starting to experiment on me with the popular drugs for fibromyalgia. Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc. I am taking Horizant (which is Gabapentin), and I am going to give it a few weeks to see if it helps. At this point, I would do anything to get relief. Does anyone know of other treatments for my affliction?

My penis started hurting at the bottom of the head, then it started itching like mad after a day. I itched it real hard. The next day my inner thighs started itching and it has spread to a couple itch bumps on my stomach, many on my waist area / lower abdomen. I tried to refrain from itching intensely.I've done a buttload of research, eczema is all I've found to fit so far. It doesn't seem to be mites/bed bugs/scabies/chiggers. Jock itch doesn't fit. Neither does yeast infection, or any other fungal/bacterial infection. My penis has become less itchy but more try. The skin on the head is flaking. I've been using ice cubes to temporarily relieve the itch but it's not too much help. My sleep is becoming very disturbed.

I shaved with a razor that was a little rusty. I Didn't realize this until after I was done... Ive developed this strange rash...its itchy. Not raised or open sore. Looks somewhat like blotches of birthmarks around my bikini line. Its lighter when my skin is dry. Right out of the shower it turns more red. Outline is a darker red. Inside is lighter shade....?

I have been diagnosed with Chronic Prostatitis and prescribed a 28 day course of 200 mg Trimethoprim tablets along with 2.5mg of Oxybutynin for the same period. Started the treatment several days ago having taken 4 tablets of each drug. There are no immediate side effects apart from a slight dizzyness. Having read the posts about the bad reactions to this drug,it has given me great concern over the long period I have to take these tablets. Are there any other readers to this website who have taken this drug for the same period of about a month ?

Also, for the record, I am asking this question out of pure curiosity on my own part (at least for the time being).
