Trimethoprim :: Can't Walk Afterwards

Jun 5, 2012

I was prescribed a 3 day course of Trimethoprim for a UTI I took the first one on a Tuesday night and by Wednesday morning i had a numb left knee, the next day i couldn't walk, phoned my GP asking if i should continue on the antibiotic because it seemed obvious to me that i was having a bad reaction to it. I was told to continue the course but wish i hadn't, the pain on Thursday night was unbearable in my left leg, i couldn't move it and it was hugely swollen. On Friday morning i went to hospital and was there for 5 days on more antibiotics and painkillers. it's been 5 weeks now and i still can't walk on my left leg i still have pain and it also started in my right hand too. Before taking Trimethoprim i was a healthy 43 year old woman with no health issues. I'm now waiting to see a Rheumatologist and am terrified my leg won't recover.

Trimethoprim :: 28 Days Supply Of Trimethoprim. Should I Be Worried ?

I have been diagnosed with Chronic Prostatitis and prescribed a 28 day course of 200 mg Trimethoprim tablets along with 2.5mg of Oxybutynin for the same period. Started the treatment several days ago having taken 4 tablets of each drug.There are no immediate side effects apart from a slight dizzyness. Having read the posts about the bad reactions to this drug,it has given me great concern over the long period I have to take these tablets. Are there any other readers to this website who have taken this drug for the same period of about a month ?

Hip Replacement :: First Walk

My surgeon has let me out of bed and I tried to walk. I walked round my bed and sat in the chair on the other side. Like everything else the chair was not high enough so was uncomfortable to sit in. I was in really bad pain because. This hip feels so different to the last one.  I do know that I have to take into consideration that my leg will be using muscle it hasn't used for years. I also have to take into consideration that my hip deteriorate so much. But the way he did  the op is no different than when he did my right one. But to err on the side of caution. I am to wear a brace for 6 weeks once it arrives. I'm so glad I had my left hip done first because this has helped me cope a little more and it is almost as strong as the original leg.   The pain is intense and nothing at the moment is helping with it. So they have upped my oramorph to 15 mil to try and make me comfortable. This just goes to prove no two legs are the same on anyone. I hope this pain will subside  given time but right now I feel like my right leg has been chopped off not replaced. Things I know will settle down. I am just disappointed they didn't go the same way as before.

Ankle Reconstruction - When To Walk And Put Pressure?

I had ankle reconstruction + arthroscopy 2 weeks ago today (on 7/22). Originally the plan was to first do the arthroscopy, and see if I needed a chondroplasty or ankle debridement and then do a Brostrom-Gould for the ligament I tore. I was never told exactly what my surgeon did, but when he finished my surgery he told my mother that it turned out he was able to do much less than he believed he would need to. Cartilage looked good (except for a bit of discoloration and degeneration which we are looking into the cause of) which is a miracle considering how many injuries this ankle has suffered. So no chondroplasty or debridement. I'm not sure if he did the Brostrom-Gould or if "doing less" meant he was able to salvage the ligament and just sew it back together.

Everything was going pretty well until I accidentally got my splint wet last Thursday (8 days post-op). I went in to the office and my doctor came in and looked at my incision, which he said looked great, and he told the nurse she could take out my stitches and put me in a hard cast that day instead of waiting until today, which was supposed to be my first post-op visit (14 days post-op). There were steri-strips across most of the incision, and she cut the stitches at each side of the incision, and one on the inside of my ankle from the arthroscopy (for a total of 3 stitches). I am confused as to whether she took out all the stitches, since it seems hard to believe that they would close an almost 2 inch incision with 2 stitches, and only one of the arthroscopy incisions would have stitches in it.

Anyway, they put the hard cast on me, and my surgeon told me I could ditch the crutches, so I started progressive weight bearing the next day. I got up to about 50% weight while walking around my house with only one crutch, which did not hurt too much and was not causing excessive swelling. However, yesterday a friend called me as a last-resort when she desperately needed a ride, and I agreed, glad to have an excuse to force myself to leave the house for the first time in 2 weeks. I walked to the car with ease, and while the drive ended up taking much longer than I expected, the surgery was on my left ankle so I was fine. But walking back to my house late at night when I was tired, I put much more weight on it than I meant to, and I tripped once and ended up putting full weight on the foot. Of course it hurt, but it did not worry me too much until about 20 minutes later when I was finally dressed for bed and lying down with my foot elevated. Until then I had experienced almost no pain in my ankle except some normal expected pain when walking or if I let my foot hang for too long. This was a completely different pain than I had felt before, very sharp and throbbing right where my incision was (before then I could not even tell where the incision was by feel). It was so bad that I had to take two oxycodone before I could relax enough to sleep.

I have kept off of it since then and it feels okay unless I move it, since there is a little bit too much room in my cast - I can wiggle up and down and my ankle can turn a bit. These tiny movements probably won't seriously damage anything, but they hurt and sometimes the incision brushes up against the side of the cast and it stings a lot. I am not taking any pain killers today and my ankle feels almost like it did before I walked on it, except now I am able to constantly feel (not pain just awareness) where the incision is, when before I never felt it.

I am just worried that I could have damaged the ankle somehow by putting so much pressure on it so soon after surgery, especially since I wasn't technically supposed to even start walking on it until tomorrow, 7 days after I actually started to walk on it. It seems a little off to me like that my surgeon told me to walk on it 8 days post op (maybe he forgot that I was there earlier than I was supposed to be?) I have also been very worried that I could have torn open the incision somehow, since the stitches came out so early and there was only tape holding it together (I think), which very well may have fallen off by now.

I was hoping I could get some insight from other people who have maybe gotten their stitches out super early or walked on their ankle too much too soon and see if your pain was anything like mine.

Restless Legs Syndrome :: Exercise - Buy Yourself A Dog And Walk

I’ve suffered RLS for 30-40 years now. I take Pramipexole. I offered to care for my daughter’s dog whilst she went on holiday. It’s a Pug about 2 feet tall. In the space of about 3-4 days, I must have walked that dog 10-15 miles. I was devastated when she wanted him back. Apparently he slept for 2 day’s. The following day I developed left sided hip Bursitis. The pain was excruciating. After 4 days of this pain, at 3 in the morning, I dialled 111. A doctor told me to take paracetamol. Around 10am later that day, I dialled 111 again and was referred to a primary care doctor who prescribed 30-500 co-codamol. Two day afterwards, the pain began to subside to a dull ache and 2 weeks later, no pain at all. Where’s all this going. Between the Bursitis pain starting and now, I have suffered hardly any RLS. Occasionally a little in the afternoons but that’s all. Apparently exercise helps to relieve RLS and I believe that is the case. However, I’m wondering if prolonged intense exercise gives more prolonged relief. Be aware of other conditions though. Particularly cardiac related. Discuss with your GP. I have reduced my Pramipexole from 4 tablets at 17.30 to 2. Still no RLS. The moral of the story. Buy yourself a dog and walk the hell out of it.

Lower Back Pain - Can Barely Walk

For some years now I've had lower back pain. It has gotten so bad now that I can only walk so far before it tightens up in that part of my back and I have so much pain I can barely walk. Side story, I had a interview today with a nice company downtown and I had to walk across a parking lot, through a mall, and across a street. Lets just say I couldn't make it.

I've had a xray and a MRI, neither showing jack. The latest doctor I saw was certain I had degenerative disc or something but he was shocked when the MRI came up not showing anything. So for now he gave me some Tramadol, set me up for some physical therapy, and a referral to a pain doctor who wants to inject I think steroids into my lower back.

I didn't get the shot yet out of fear and because I have a overactive thyroid and that doctor has me not doing any other meds so he can run some ongoing tests for the next few weeks. So right now I need help. I've posted here out of desperation. I'll admit I've allowed my frustration at work create some home stress and I have not worked out in almost a year. So I am overweight and I'm thinking maybe that might be a big contributor. So I'd like to put some effort into weight loss.

Sciatica? Pain, Unsteady, Unable To Walk

My husband fell downstairs about 6 months ago, he initially had knee pain and scrapes. He was at work, at my insistence he made a claim, although they never asked him to see a doctor. He has progressively gotten worse. He saw a chiropractor for some back and leg/knee pain, he felt better with these visits, but not back to normal. Since the fall he has now fallen several time due to his "leg giving out". He is now using a cane and very unsteady in his feet. He has constant leg pain, keeping him up at night. He finally agreed to go to urgent care, they say he has muscle loss (hamstring), and referred him to an Ortho MD. The Ortho MD, said his knee is fine and referred him to Neuro MD, ordered a MRI. At this point he finally agreed to re-tell work about the claim. They found that he did report it, but they failed to "turn it in". (Really). They now have him waiting to be referred to a MD of their choice, Utah Work Comp laws. My concern is...he is not improving, continues to have pain, unsteady, unable to walk very much. Is this possibly sciatica? What can he do while the system is taking forever to get him seen?

Cant Walk Or Straighten Knee After Bike Accident

So 3 weeks ago, I had a bad bike accident where I flew off the bike and slammed onto my knee. Had no immediate pain until about 2 hours later, but at that point my knee was so swollen that it looked like I had grown a second kneecap! The pain got progressively worse and by the end of the day, I couldn't walk. I'm homeschooled so for the past 3 weeks, I've only left my house to go to doctors appointments because the pain is so bad even while sitting. I can't bend my knee too far or straighten it much at all, it pretty much has stayed in a bent position for three weeks. So I went to the dr, got an MRI done, and the dr was so disrespectful to me. Told me my pain was all in my head, told me to "just get up and walk" even though I visibly couldn't. He tried to manipulate me into straightening my knee by talking to me about college while trying to push the knee straight. So unprofessional. But that's besides the point - he told me my MRI looked completely normal? My knee is always popping and has all the symptoms of a torn ligament (although I don't have excruciating pain if you put physical pressure on the kneecap, although it is somewhat painful.) anyway, just wondering if I could get a few second opinions on these MRI's? I was thinking torn meniscus or ACL, but let me know.

Genetic Disorder? Cannot Walk For Long Distances

I am asking on behalf of my friend's child. Her child cannot walk for long distances, and needs a foot brace. I think there is discomfort at his talus(?). I'm not very sure about the details.

Her in-laws have had this genetic disease passed down to every male in the family, I believe. It is really saddening, as my friend's two sons both have this disease. What kind of disease is this? I do not have details, so I'm up for suggestions. Thanks!
