After suffering with reflux for the last 10 years, With diet change and Nexium it's all under control apart from the constant throat clearing.
Has anyone made headway with this part of it all?
Whilst it not as serious as other people symptoms, I have just been through a divorce after 17 years and i'm not sure any woman is going to want a man who clears his throat every minute!! lol
I do have a small lump sensation in the throat with it. The biggest thing I had to cut out was bread, it used to get stuck and make me bloated. I do miss a nice thick piece of white bread and butter though
Anyway, back on track to the constant throat clearing. Anyone had any luck?

For the past while I have been experiencing issues after eating. After eating it feels like something is stuck in my throat and I constantly have to clear my throat. This lasts about 20 minutes and it slowly goes away. However, in addition to this I also experience my voice going hoarse while it is occurring. This only happens after eating, not during. I have no issues during meals, but about 5 minutes after I get the sensation in my throat and my voice will go in and out. It bothers me and causes me to avoid going out to eat because I feel rude constantly clearing my throat. It is quite irritating, but I am unsure if it is something I should bother my doctor about. For the record, I am 25 and I have been experiencing this for 1-1.5 years.

So I've really been through it with my GERD and I've had a year and a half of hell. I'm just starting to see some improvements but now I've got this thick mucus at the back of my throat that gets stuck there, I can't swallow it as it doesn't move much but when I cough it does come up, then slips back down.
I'm constantly having to cough and clear my throat, the mucus tends to sit right near my gag reflex so it's always uncomfortable!

My symptoms are constant throat clearing throughout the day and sometimes feel a very slight hoarseness / slightly sore throat and sometimes spitting white bubbles and the feeling of clogged throat. I've tested positive for high pepsin levels and am using alkaline water , and cutting out certain foods but it doesn't seem to work..im taking lansoprazole and also gaviscon but symptoms remain :-( ...I'm ok in bed at night but it's the rest of the day ..many on this discussion tend to talk about normal reflux instead of LPR , silent reflux any advise on this subject welcome...

I am a 40 year old male. I have been having the following symptoms for 3 years now:
- Constant Stuffy and runny nose
- Coughing all day
- Throat Clearing many times an hour
- Excessive mucus
I have seen many doctors and I read that it could be due to few things such as:
- Asthma – I checked and I don’t have it
- Allergy – I did allergy testing and I was not allergic to anything
- Acid Reflux – I don’t have any heartburn symptoms and take Prilosec before bed and sleep tilted. After two months, no help.
- Vasomotor Rhinitis – I have taken Dymista, Atrovent but no help
My work involves giving presentations but it has been really difficult constantly coughing, clearing my throat and blowing my nose.

I am a 22 year old male. Along with my other issues I also suffer from the above. My endoscopy showed (Mild G1 reflux oesophagitis and minor duodenitis. Some bile reflux in stomach). I am currently taking Esomeprazole 40 mg per day which I believe is not helping. Everyone has said how my voice sounds much deeper and different than before, and the top of my throat is always itching. My teeth feel really bad, I know over time Acid can make them really bad. I have had several appointments cancelled by the Gastroenterologist at my local hospital and I am due to see him in September. I have tried all remedies etc but nothing seems to help.

So for the past 5 years or so, I have been having trouble with throat clearing.
I often get a strong urge to clear my throat. The urge is increased after eating and in even moderately stressful situations. In addition to the urge, if I do not clear my throat my voice comes out sounding quite/wet. This may very well run in my family as I have seen at least one member of my family have the same symptoms as I.

I was initially diagnosed with LPR for my symptoms, which were constant post nasal drip, hoarse voice, and a click when I swallowed. I have since figured out it wasn't LPR at all, and that all the protocols for LPR only make things worse.
I came here to hopefully help others who may have been told they have LPR when really, they have something else.
The symptoms of LPR are exactly the same as the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies of B vitamins, vitamin A, and iron.
In particular, a riboflavin deficiency will dry out the soft tissues of your throat so that you feel every tiny drip of what is actually normal mucus. Riboflavin is a B vitamin that is not stored in the body and you must eat it every day. Dairy products, something many of us with mucus are told to avoid, are very high in riboflavin, and one of the best sources. Stress, illness and certain chronic conditions can increase the body's requirements for riboflavin, causing deficiency symptoms, like a dry, post nasal drip in the throat. (In my case, I became deficient due to an undiscovered thyroid issue. When the thyroid is not functioning properly, you do not metabolize riboflavin.) Mild riboflavin deficiency will also cause dry, itchy or burning feeling of the eyes.
Other B vitamins which affect the throat are niacin and folate. Iron deficiency causes tongue and throat swelling and can even cause webbing of the esophagus. Vitamin A and zinc also affect the mouth, tongue and throat. Iodine is essential for the salivary glands.
Certain health issues can affect the metabolism of nutrients. You can be deficient even though you get plenty of it in your diet. Your genetics, your diet, and your current health conditions all affect your nutritional status.
Proton pump inhibitors and acid reducers can make things worse by reducing your absorption of nutrients.
If you want to try some vitamins to see if they will help, start with the water soluble B vitamins. I recommend taking coenzymated sublinguals which melt under your tongue, so that you don't have to worry about whether you are digesting and metabolizing them properly.

Although my throat spasms have now stopped I have started to have problems with my larynx.
Mucous seems to be trapped underneath it and collects at night. I wake up with a swollen larynx but no pain. Now my lymph nodes in my neck and the back of my head have swelled.
I also wake up every morning feeling unrefreshed, groggy and depressed.
I am still unable to swallow food.
Surely this can't be GERD?

Hey I have recently had an endoscopy done as was getting bad acid reflux, all came back clear apart from when some biopsies was done they showed some extra white cells in my stomach. I have been taking acid reflux meds and for the last two weeks keep getting what I can only describe as waves of pain in my throat it really hurts my throat or should I say neck also feels tender to touch. The pain just comes and goes in waves in my throat and it's almost like what I had when the acid was bad but in my chest. Has anyone else suffered from this? Am at my wits end and going back to doctors this week

My main symptom with LPR is the awful mucus throat. Does anyone know when this starts to disappear, during the course of my ppi treatment? Can a phlegmy throat be caused by intolerances? I only seem to get the sore throat when I'm talking a lot or stressed and sometimes in the morning if I've slipped off my pillow in the night. Can someone please help, it's just awful, making me feel very sick.

Until a few weeks ago I thought I was a success story here but I fear I'm a complete failure and I don't understand why or what is best to do.
A few weeks ago my lpr symptoms started sneaking back despite my taking 40mg nexium and 40mg domperidone per day and also Gaviscon Advance.
My symptoms are lump in throat, horrendous burning mouth and horrendous chest pain.
I'm waiting on a ph test but that's in 6 weeks and I won't see the GI consultant for another couple of weeks after that. Each day seems to be a bit worse and now it's hurting to swallow, and food is getting stuck. I'll be honest, I'm terrified I've got something awful. The pain is constant, both in my mouth and throat and in my chest. I've been in floods of tears.
My gastroscopy at the end of April was clear apart from Barrett's, the one I had before that when I had these symptoms ( before ppis) showed grade 2 oesophagitis and Barrett's.
I have a gp appointment tomorrow and don't know what to do? Do I insist she sends me back to the GI as my symptoms have radically worsened? Is there any way of lessening the symptoms ( I have already made all the lifestyle mods and drink alkaline water)
I'm at a loss, just don't understand why this is happening to me. So scared my oesophagus is getting damaged again. I just don't know what to do. This condition is ruining my life.

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone has had/has the below symptoms:
* loss of appetite/ no hunger
* feeling of lump in throat - mainly after eating
* bloating - sometimes a burning sensation in tummy
* fullness quickly
* general feeling of overall discomfort which makes me feel sluggish
I definitely know I can't tolerate too much wheat well nor alcohol. I've had than endoscopy/colonoscopy and it came back with "gastritis". I've been on nexium 40mg and somac 40mg but doesn't seem to be helping so I dont think its reflux issue. I've now been seeing a naturopath and taking some herbal mixtures which has helped with the bloating on some days. I know diet definitely makes a difference but I feel I've not got to the root of the problem. This has been going on for about a year now and of course I am worried given it hasn't cleared itself.

I have had a chronic sore throat for 5 months now. Initially thought it was strep, but test came back negative. Was tested for allergies, negative. Have had 3 ENTs scope my throat and all say it looks completely normal. Have been to two GIs who weren't particularly helpful, though one prescribed Nortriptyline thinking it might be a sensory neuropathy -- have been taking it for 2.5 months with no help (was at 20mg and ENT had me start raising by 10mg per week...now at 30mg, and tomorrow will begin 40mg). Was at the ER twice -- CT scan normal, blood tests normal. I have also restricted my diet to the Kaufman diet to little avail. After I eat I do notice that I'm a little "burpy" and can taste bile sometimes, which makes me think LPR (though the ENTs say there's no sign of it in the scopes). I also have an occasional chest pain that I think is an esophageal spasm, again making me think LPR/GERD. I was on PPIs for about ten years and slowly weaned myself off after a few months of this since they didn't seem to be helping. Have been off the PPIs for over a month ago...now taking H2s (40mg Pepcid 2 x day) . Oh, and I've also tried DGL..not much help.
So I'm stumped, and so are my docs. I really like and trust my current ENT, and he is genuinely trying to help. After a few more weeks of increasing the nortriptyline he is going to refer me for the acid testing where they put the probes in your throat.
So, does anyone have any brilliant thoughts on what might be going on? The pain is significant (some days are worse than others), and it feels particularly bad after giving presentations, which I do frequently. I can't stand the thought of this lasting a whole lot longer, and at this point worry that it could be something more serious.

I have had this problem since November of 2006. I have tried just about EVERYTHING otc all nasal sprays, all antihistamines, zyrtec, mucinex, allegra even the ones you have to show your I'D,neti pot, etc. I have even tried candida and other natural remedies like apple cider and such.I have to constantly clear my throat. I have this thick stringy sticky mucous I'm always hacking up. It seems worse after I eat, exercise, laugh. Also in the morning for the first 2 hours I'm up it's worse. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I'm drowning in mucous. This irritates all people around me. I've had surgery for my adenoids and deviated septum, before that surgery I could not clear the mucous out, this helped to atleast be able to hack it out. I need someone to be my angel and tell me you have had this same problem and you know the answers since no doctor can help. I feel this is going to be the death of me. I hope I'm not clearing a hole in my throat from doing it so much.

Okay, so here are the facts: I have a 1 cm hiatal hernia and reflux. This I have been diagnosed with. I changed my whole diet - very bland and eating next to nothing. For about a week or two I was feeling better and eating all the same foods. However, last night I ate the same meal I eat every night -my chicken and apple sauce at 5:00. At 8:00 the intense pains started in the chest and went on and off until 1:00am with feeling like I was having a heart attack. Pains in the back and chest and under my breastbones. Finally took my spasm meds (docs thought I was having esophageal. spasms) but that didn't work to help the pain. Any thoughts - does anyone experience this horrible chest pain. It is horribly painful feeling like my esophagus is being pulled, stabbed, and crushed. Its excruciating!
