Polymyalgia Rheumatica And GCA :: Swelling On Right Side Of Eye And Face
Dec 31, 2011
This morning I woke up with my right side of face all swollen, red and my eyeball is leaking. The right side of my face, jaw, temporal area and neck have given me problems for months and months before the doctors diagnosed PMR and GCA. They still have not done anything the really confirm GCA and I am worried that I may have had a mini-stroke as I woke up all numb in the right side of my head one morning and slowly the numbness went away and then pain was horrible. I have pain in the right side of my head 24/7 but the SWELLING appearance is new. Should I be going to the hospital?

About a week and a half ago I woke up to my left eye completely swollen shut. Doctor gave me antihistamine and antibiotic to cover allergic reaction and infection. Swelling significantly went down but never 100%. Eyelid still throbbing on occasion and throbbing to side of eye and in corner. Swelling has moved to side of face and under chin. Had cat scan and ultrasound and nothing abnormal but everyone notices the swelling except my doctor down plays it. Something is going and I'm super frustrated with what it could be.

I'm now into about 8th month at around 10 mg, despite instructions and warnings from Rheumy. I'll stay as long as it takes but I'd like to know at what dosage and how long it takes for some of the side effects to leave. I'm speaking about things such as memory problems, tremor, purpura, balance loss, etc. I'm sure I won't see any improvement at 10, but it would be nice to look forward to losing some of the worst when I can get my dose smaller.

I was diagnosed with shingles yesterday and I have started taking Valtrex as prescribed.
I went to the walk in clinic 4 days ago because my throat was sore, and my glands in front of my ear and behind my ear were super sore and swollen. He prescribed Amoxil and said I had a sinus infection (and I do have cold symptoms). I also had the rash at the time, but not as bad as now. I actually had spots on my forehead before all of this..but I assumed I was breaking out in acne or something.
It is on my face!! All on the right side of my forehead, making my right side of my face swell as well as my right eyelid and under my eye is swelling! I look horrible.
I did go to the eye dr today to have it checked out, and my eye is fine and there isn't any corneal nerve involvement.
What can I do for the swelling?! I am a 29 year old female with two young boys to look after!
The pain of the shingles isn't that bad for me, I just feel like my hair is in a tight pony tail on that side.

I was on Lisinopril for blood pressure for more than 10 years. I got excellent results. About two months ago I had an episode of swelling in my face. The Emergency Department doctor said on seeing me, "You must be taking a blood pressure drug that ends in pril."
According to him, I can never take any ACE inhibitor drug again.
My doctor switched me to a beta blocker but the results are not nearly as good as they were with Lisinopril. My BP is up and I've developed dependent edema in my feet.
Does anyone know if there is an ACE inhibitor that doesn't cause this reaction in people who've experienced it once?

At the start of 2012 a week before school started I began getting a shooting pain in what felt like in my gums and right in between my teeth. I endured almost sleepless nights of drooling because the pain was so much that I wouldn't dare move my face. I couldn't eat either, over the counter medicines didnt work. My face then began to start swelling. It was the right side. Parents finally took me to the dentist. Did some tests determined had some sort of infection in the tooth. They did a root canal and the guy cleaned out the inside of the tooth the best he could with antibiotics they said. After that they gave me some more antibiotics to take for about a week or a little more after. Majority of swelling went down. Even after all that and now years later I'm trying to figure out if I still have swelling in my right side from this infection. I heard the infection in these cases usually still resides or even grows if not fully eliminated. I will write three scenarios that raise my suspicion for this all occurring some time after this previous story. I started getting bad acne, the right side of my face looked like it was swelling according to my mother to where she was getting concerned (i was also slightly aware of this). They put me in some sort of antibiotics for all round body that must have been related to treating acne infections. During this time I do remember a short period of time a few weeks into treatment where swelling subsided so I stopped taking meds again. Another later occasion I and my brother were arguing and he called me out making fun of my right side being "swollen". This raised insecurities and I later asked him you think my face is uneven like that? He told me truthfully that my right side has gotten fatter and been that way ever since I got that infection in the tooth.
So I guess what I'm asking is that is the infection from the tooth abscess continuing to cause some recurring swelling in my right side? Are there any tests to determine this? Do you think I should try taking the same antibiotic I did when I had acne and see if any swelling goes down again?

I was diagnosed as having Shingles on Friday at the doctors. I started itching on my forehead Tues night and by the next day my forehead had all red marks on it? I didn't realise you can get shingles on your face?
I have had horrible pain on/off since, swelling on my eyebrow and jawline near my ears?
Anyone else had this? How long will it last? Also should I be off work with it?

My mother was using a toothpick the other night and poked herself in the mouth pretty hard. Her face started to swell really big she took some Advil that seemed to help with the swelling i am just wondering how or if this is an urgent thing to have looked at, as she and my step father are now on an island and far away from any health care! I am worried she could have an infection!

I have had Hashimoto's for twelve years. Seems like my levels have never been "right". I've tried Synthroid, Levo and Armour and nothing seems to keep my levels steady. I went to Dr four months ago with severe swelling in hands feet and face and severe joint pain and fatigue. My TSH was 34. He switched me from levo to armour (90 mgs). The first week I felt much better but started swelling again and had terrible fatigue. Went back about two weeks later and he changed me to synthroid 150mgs. The swelling got a little better but still fatigued and joint pain is always there. I went to my gyno for yearly exam two weeks ago and they tested my TSH. it was .05 so gyno lowered synthroid to 125 mg and told me to come back in eight weeks. I'm feeling terrible again.. in bed today because of severe fatigue and joint pain and hands and feet are terribly swollen. Had anyone else had these symptoms with Hashimoto's? I'm wondering if it's the medication that's making me sick.

I was thinking about PMR and although I am very nearly stable on 10 mg Prednisolone it is a knife edge dose. I still have many side effects from 4 years use of the steroid. In some kind of order they are:-
Muscle wastage, fatigue, lassitude, thinning of skin, easy bruising, cuts which take an unusually long time to heal, glaucoma, dry eye, exacerbated and premature cataracts which necessitated operations on both eyes to replace the lenses, virtual permanent stiffness and loss of motion in neck, constant shoulder and back pain, balance problems and now a recent discovery which I believe to be bronchiectasis. The last manifested itself with a slight productive cough I have had for about a year, with a shortness of breath which is steadily getting worse. Initial exam by GP showed no ‘crackle’, X-ray was ‘normal’ blood ‘normal’, whatever that is. Have seen this GP who gave me a course of amoxicillin (5 days) which did nothing. Then just left me to get on with things, no follow up, nothing. Not sure what to do next. I can see any one of the other doctors at this particular practice and am thinking to see one of them soon; well at least I can try for an appointment, currently 2 weeks!
Now the latest manifestation…..Shingles. Or to give it its proper title
Herpes Varicella-Zoster. A particularly painful affliction caused by the chicken pox I must have had as a child. It has affected the left side of my scalp, my left forehead, eye and face; I am not a pretty sight! By the time I knew what it was it was too late for any anti viral medication so will just have to let it take its course. Existing on Paracetamol, Codeine, Neurontin and the occasional Tramadol. All of these analgesics are for a short time only, don’t want to get hooked. Managed to see a doctor reasonably quickly about my eye who sent me to the eye unit at my local hospital, ophthalmologist examined the eye and gave me the all clear, phew!
On top of all this I have the daddy of all flares I put the cause of this down to the trauma of my new affliction. My immune system is compromised due to the daily use of 10mg. Prednisolone which I have increased to 15 mg. for a short time. It appears that any kind of trauma either emotional or physical will set off a flare.
I wondered what causes a flare in other sufferers from PMR/GCA and do they do as I do and increase the dosage of steroid and try to rest? Or is there a magical cure I should know about?
Long ramble I know but strangely feel better for writing it, apologies if you think I’m wasting your time, or a hypochondriac. (I’m not).

Background: I am 66 years old and have suffered first attack in mid November 2015... I have been fairly active person and have done some triathlon in the past, so not being able to get out of the bed on my own was pretty shocking to me... It took about one month to diagnose PMR and I started medication (prednisone) at 15 mg/day mid December.
If there is an interest, I would like to post about the progress in recovery, with special attention to exercise. I am seeing specialist every 2 weeks and complete blood work is done to monitor inflammation caused by PMR.
I would like to post what I have done thus far and future progress in (hopefully) successful recovery.

I have recently had blood tests again and have a low esr. I have symptoms of pmr and discussed these with my gp. I begged her for prednisolone and she reluctantly agreed but only one week. I felt great! I was walking normally, getting out of bed for the whole day where I was bed bound a lot before, just felt so wonderful having so little pain in my hips and shoulders. My blood tests came back normal and she said she cant give me any more and is referring me to rheumatology again. The pain has come back, my hips are crippling me my shoulders are so so painful again and nothing else has worked, just the prednisolone. My orthopaedic specialist may give me one more injection in ten days, vpbut that will be the third and he said 3 is the max so I should have relief for 3 weeks, if previous injections are to go by but after that.

For the last week or so, I have been getting short of breath, and very dizzy, feel like I am losing my balance, and my heart is racing. I have never had panic attacks, and this seem to start strangely enough when I have been reading....and then the weird feeling lasts the rest of the day.
Is it possible it`s the 11 mg pred I`m on? (have been for 4 years) Just can`t pin down what`s causing it! My blood pressure is ok....not diabetic...
