Outcome Of Amitriptyline For IBS?
Oct 29, 2014
I've been prescribed a low dose of Amitriptyline for IBS (10 mg per day). Can anyone advise if they have taken this for IBS and what the outcomes have been?

View 2 RepliesI've done extensive surgery and am terrified to have this procedure done. I'm only 23, and feel that it might lead to years of complications.
I do need a surgery to fix some jaw problems I'm having. I was told that I am bone on bone, and that the fat graft I had put in is no longer present. Does anyone on here have experience with this?
I have my ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) booked in 5 days time with my pre-op assessment tomorrow.
I have founds tonnes of useful info but I'm now starting to realise everyone is different.
The main thing I'm finding is the difference in recovery and outcomes with different types and lengths of immobilisation.
So far Im being led to believe that those with some form of above elbow immobilisation in the initial stages have better outcomes compared to those with only below elbow who seem to have had more pain, less motion, and in some cases delayed or malunion of the ulna as well as more pain or issues with the plate or surgery site.
Tore my right achilles nearly 3 weeks ago now. Had the operation about 10 days after rupture. I am in my late twenties and it came as a bit of a shock if im honest. I go to the gym regularly and exercise with weights frequently.
Anyway, had the op and im in no pain and have no swelling. I was expecting a lot of pain but nothing. The most discomfort i have is when i have to get up to use my crutches, as after about 15 mins being stood up i can feel the calf start to swell a bit. I am told i am in this cast for another week and then they will change the angle of my foot for another cast. Looking forward to getting back to driving and the gym.
Is anyone else getting this? If I come of the amitriptyline will it stop?
View 28 RepliesSo I'm 8 months into my latest debilitating 24/7 dizziness. After a clear MRI, a neurologist suggested my imbalance might have a migrainous element to it. There is such a thing as vestibular migraine.
At this point, I'm willing to try anything, so the Dr has out me on Amitriptyline as a migraine preventative. I've been taking 10mg per night for the last 5 days (I can go up as high as 60mg by gradually dosing up).
I know it can have side effects that take a while to wear off and that it might not become effective for several weeks. But honestly, it's making me feel much worse already. I wake up every morning with a pounding head as if I'd drank a bottle of vodka, which is worse than the cannonball-head feeling I had already. Plus, I think it's making me woozier and dizzier than before (which was already so bad I've been off work for 3 months).
Has anyone tried it? Does it get better? I'm finding it really hard to cope with the side effects on top of how I'm already feeling. Many thanks.
after using Tramadol for several months with limited success I have now been prescribed Amitriptyline also to aid sleep. I was constantly waking up at night in pain but this is seeming to work thankfully.
Is it a concern though that it does knock me out and I do work night shifts.....
Perhaps I need to change my shift pattern temporary?
Was on 600mg Gabapentin 3 times a day for peripheral neuropathy to little effect. Was prescribed Amitriptyline, took 25mg for 3 days then 50mg for 5 days - replacing the 2 Gabapentin at night. Reduced Amitriptyline to 25mg after awful side effects. Took for 2 days with 300mg at night (in addition to the 600mg in morning and new GP said stop Amitriptyline and increase morning dose to 900 mg. Was OK for a while, but then feet and lower legs started severe pins and needles, difficult to walk. Disturbed sleep last night and feet and legs still bad. Is this withdrawal from Amitriptyline? How long will it last? GP rang and said gradually increase Gabapentin to 900 mg 3 times a day and if necessary go to 1200 mg 3 times a day. Any suggestions? Will this gradually get better?
View 3 RepliesI've been on Amitriptyline for 6 months for pain management - lowest dose 10 mg in evening and I am getting on fine after the side effects at the start!
This week I've been started on fluoxetine 20 mg per day for other issues. GP said it might interact with the Amitriptyline but might not so give it a go.
Has anyone else taken these two medicines at the same time? How did you feel?
I've taken fluoxetine before so I'm ready for the crazy initial side effects (off work for 4 weeks so I can get through it!)
I have suspected Piriformis Syndrome & SI Joint Dysfunction also causing sciatica, have also had some nerve pain in the back of my thigh, occasional calf cramps, foot cramps, and foot pain. Since my last Cortisol injection into my SI joint it has made everything horribly worse, I cannot sit now for very long without severe left foot pain that makes me feel nauseous it's so horrible. I have informed the consultant of this and am on a waiting list to go back and see him, this is the 2nd time the injections have caused me extra pain so have now lost faith in these and want to try alternatives.
My consultant previously wanted to put me on Amitriptyline but I have been on this before and was taken off it due to serious sedative side effects (even fell asleep eating in a restaurant) was on a small dose and still didn't improve with time. So I've read that Nortriptyline is an alternative with less side effects, can anyone advise if they have had less sedative side effects with this than Amitriptyline please?
I've been taking a low level of amitriptyline (10 - 20mg daily) for chronic pelvic pain for about 5 years (possibly longer). Recently, my specialist suggested I change to Nortriptyline (10mg daily) as it has less side effects - particularly the 'foggy-head' feeling in the morning that I often experienced.
I spoke at length to my GP about this and they assured me that I could just switch from one to the other, which I have done. Whilst I am definitely feeling less zombie-like in the morning, I find I can't sleep at night. With the ami, I zonked out quite easily, but with the nor, every night since I switched, I haven't slept properly at all. I'm quite run down at the moment so I'm a bit concerned that I'm going to make myself ill if I'm not sleeping.
Ive been using 25mg amitriptyline for migraine headache, i was told by dr that it will block headaches from coming.. for 4 days i've been taking this med. & it has me sluggish, tired, dry mouth, & delusional thoughts ( is this normal) Although the few nights i have taken it, i haven't had a headache, i just feel tightness & delusional thought in my mind, feels very scary, want to stop taking them. Everyone around me says, im not the same person i once was.. feeling sad/ very emotional..

View 7 RepliesI've been taking amitriptyline for about a year for chronic tension headaches and i'm convinced they have made me gain weight. I've always kept an eye on my weight and i know how it can vary from day to day, but i always remained 2 lb's either side of my ideal weight.
Since taking amitriptyline i've gained over half a stone, I even gained weight while trying to lose it! I've been eating around 1200 calories a day and still nothing!
I have asked several times at the doctors about this, and they all say that amitriptyline is not known for weight gain, but when looking on the internet it says that it is a well known fact, so i am quite confused.
I have spent 4 month trying to ween off, now its cold turkey. stopped taking amitriptyline last night. already feel slightly better, but heighten anxiety..Scale of 1-10...
View 47 RepliesI have been experiencing headaches since 2006. I have been to the doctor numerous times trying different prescriptions. I have absolutely had it with dealing with this. I went to the doctor this week because I am on my 13th day of this headache with no relief. She put me on nadolol and butalbital. On top of what the previous doctor prescribed months ago amitriptyline and to topiramate. After taking the new medicine my headache was so bad all day. It is the worst. It has only been three days on the new meds but I am wondering if I should take them because I feel worse than I have ever felt. I go back to the doctor in a month. Anyway I just wanted some opinions on this. I'm 36 and I am sick and tired of these headaches. I have them about 80% of the month since 2006. I am fed up. I need to get pain free.
View 2 RepliesI have been on lexapro 20 mg for approximately 10 years and now my GI doctor has prescribed me amitriptyline 25mg for irritable bowel syndrome. I really don't feel right about this combination. I tried weaning myself off lexapro first 3/4 a pill for 7 days, then 1/2 pill for 7 days and the 1/4 pill but after one day on the 1/4 I was a complete mess. Had many side effects. I don't even feel I need antidepressant meds anymore. I got back on the full pill but now I feel like everything is surreal. I'm anxious and can't seem to function normally. What should I do. I go to my primary care dr. tomorrow and want to know what I should be asking her.
View 1 RepliesHallo - my husband was taken into hospital a few days ago with a ?heart attack - but that (thank God) was not proven. They said it could be angina. But the next day after having been given Amitriptyline he showed the symptoms of a mini stroke and I couldn't understand what he was saying because of slurred speech. The GP (when he was discharged) said it was highly unlikely to be a stroke and he blamed this drug - as did all the hospital doctors.
This is very odd to me and can I ask whether it could be true? He hadn't been on the drug prior to admission, so I don't know why on earth they gave it to him in hospital.
Does everyone gain weight on 20 mg amitriptyline - have been on it for 1 month
View 3 RepliesI have been diagnosed with tension-type headache and started taking Amitriptyline 25g since June 2013. This helped a lot and the dosage was lowered to 10 mg. My question is 'can you become immune to Amitriptyline' as my headaches have returned in the last 3 weeks for no apparent reason.
View 4 RepliesWas diagnosed last year as having migraine with aura. started off with numbness all down my neck and left arm, confusion at times and the very odd headache. woke one morning and thought i was having a stroke... i was confused , completely numb and disoriented. went to A&E and was admitted for 5 days of tests and scans.
i had a MRI brain scan, MRI neck scan, CT brain scan, chest x rays, neck Xrays and every imaginable blood test you could imagine. all negative and clear, except for neck MRI showing a slight bulge in the c6/c7 disc but not impinging on any nerves.
so after seeing the neurologist i was sent home with the diagnosis of migraine with aura and given a 6 month prescription for amitriptyline.
after researching the amitriptyline i decided not to take it , as i didn't feel that the rare headaches i was getting were bad and as i have a young child with some medical issues i needed to be alert at night in case he needed me.
since june i was being suffering with a constant headache, on my left side, and when its bad it goes right in behind my eyes and across my forehead. it was coming and going but its been constant for the last few days and im wondering if this is really migraine.im also suffering from regular panic attack lately . does migraine last persistently for days or weeks, should the aura symptoms not disappear when there is no headache.... i am so scared that there is something else going on even though all tests were clear.... thinking of going to GP and maybe trying the amitriptyline but from researching it seems that preventative medication is hit or miss and usually comes with side effects.....
