I get cold sores 3 times a year and 2 canker sores a year. Why do they hurt so much. I think it's because they are infected. Why do they last so long too ? Should you pick at the cold sores on your lips just to get the scab to heal ?

View 6 RepliesI just got an HSV1 (IgG) test result of 1.29, which is "positive" and had a couple of questions for the community.
1. This number is low enough that there's a pretty good chance of it being a false positive, right?
2. This test wouldn't cover any new exposure in the last month, right?
3. Does this result mean I already have antibodies and that I'd be more protected against getting oral/genital HSV1 (depending on where I already have it)?
I'm having real problems with the skin on my face. I've never had brilliantly clear skin (the odd spot here and there) but since early December I've experienced lots of dry skin and acne around my mouth, on my nose and a small part of my forehead.
I went to the GP mid-December and she said I had cold sores which seemed infected, so she prescribed me antibiotics and a 10-day course of aciclovir tablets. However, at that time the sores were localised to around my mouth and over the past few weeks I've broken out with more spots all over my face. The red sores at the edges of my mouth are still there too.
My skin is itchy and sore, when I apply moisturiser it is very sore and the spots appear redder. Also if I apply face cleanser the spots become more aggravated and show no signs of clearing. When I wake up in the morning, my skin is very dry.
It's really bothering me at the moment, I don't want people to see me in this way and it's affecting my self esteem; I had to cancel a date last week. Can I/Should I asked to be referred to a dermatologist?
I'm 25 years old so don't believe this is usual pubertal acne. I believe there's a chance the spots all over my face are linked to the cold sores, but they didn't improve after I was on aciclovir. Is it possible for cold sores to affect your whole face and not just around your mouth?
For years, I have suffered from sores around my chin area. The blisters are identical to cold sores that sometimes appear on my lip. They are painful and will eventually start to weep clear fluid. I do my best to keep the area clean to avoid any spread of infection. However, when I went to the doctor about it, she told me it was not herpes as I had thought, it was acne. Is it possible that the two conditions present as the same?

However the girl I'm seeing now had a cold sore once and never again since. Knowing what i know about the virus leads me to believe she has it but is asymptomatic.
My question is can I trigger an outbreak by kissing her with an active sore? Or is it "safe"?
Has anyone ever gotten mouth sores from using Zicam oral mist? I used it for three days plus one morning, and that night I hate some really hot food, I thought I burned my mouth. But when I looked the next day they looked more like sores. I think maybe the hot food was just the final straw and that perhaps the zicam really caused the problem. I also changed my invisalign aligners that day, so a lot going on. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this side effect from Zicam. It's on my back, upper gums, right where I was spraying the oral mist.

View 8 RepliesI think I have Oral Lichen Planus but I can't get a doctor to confirm it. I have had mouth sores in my cheek area since 2009 and now my gums are very red and inflamed and have been told that I have white lines on my inside cheek area. When I go to a dentist to have my teeth cleaned, I am always turned away because they don't like the looks of my mouth sores. In 2013 I had doctor swab my mouth and send for testing and also did blood work but was told nothing showed up. I think she was looking for bacterial infection. In the mean time, I continue with a very sore mouth.
I have a hard time eating anything because the sores are next to my bottom back teeth so eating irritates the sores a lot at night I sometimes bite the area with sores due to swelling so they pretty much never heal.
I recently went to a new dentist and she too wouldn't work on my teeth but she gave me details as to her concerns and told me to get checked for an Auto Immune disorder. I have since been to a doctor and had blood taken to check for that and then they sent me to ENT. He mentioned Oral Lichen Planus which was the first time I have heard of it. He wants to do a biopsy and then he mentioned a steroid rinse.
I also researched OLP and I have all the symptoms listed so I just don't understand how going to doctors since 2010 about the mouth sores, no one can figure it out? Am I finally heading in the right directions for diagnosis? I scares me that it has been left un treated for 5 years when I read that sometimes those with OPL can lead to mouth cancer.

It's not super painful but it's definitely not comfortable. There's really nothing else I can say to describe it. It just feels like your normal run of the mill sore throat.

View 1 RepliesI'm not Dx but a quick history-for 5 yrs I've had flares of neuropathy-stinging bee sensations that jump around, muscle twitching all over body. Also beau's lines on nail and blood lines under fingernails. At times I get livedo reticularis on my thighs when in hot sun. Also have bouts of mild pancreatitis. Not sure if its related.

I had an exposure around 3 months ago, I got a rapid blood finger-prick test at around six weeks and a little more, and it came back negative. However, starting from this month, I kept having mouth ulcers in my mouth,they are small, I'm getting a new one maybe like a week or so, then it goes away about a week. It's been a month and i have a new mouth ulcer each week after the old one heal.
My question is, how much can I trust my 6 weeks rapid test? I know its not conclusive and I'm getting another test soon, but just really wanna know its accuracy.
Also, is keep having mouth ulcers related to HIV?? is it damaging my immune system and cause such situation?
