Oedema :: Both Feet, Ankles And Calves
Jul 22, 2014
Several days ago, I developed Edema (or Oedema) overnight in both my feet, ankles and calves up to my knees. This is my third bout of edema. The first was last year but only in my right foot and the second time was a couple of months ago, again in both feet and ankles but was very mild.
Two days later, the swelling became so severe, both my feet looked bruised and turned a funny red colour. The pain became that powerful, I couldn't walk whatsoever.
Im in UK so I rang 111 NHS helpline who sent out an ambulance. The paramedics arrived and were shocked as they had never seen edema so severe before. This was a Saturday and my GP closed so they arranged an appointment with an out of hours GP at my local hospital in the next hour.
He had no idea what the cause was and was that worried, he sent me to another hospital 30 miles away to see a specialist. I arrived and was admitted in straight away for tests and observation.
They took blood and urine tests, a chest x ray, a heart reading straight away. But they couldn't link a diagnosis with the edema. They flooded me with antibiotics assuming that it was an infection.
I was discharged the day after as the redness and pain levels seemed to have gone down a little after the antibiotics and i will be returning soon for an ECG and other scans. I left with walking sticks so that I could walk around easier .
Now today its been almost a week. I still need the walking sticks to walk, the swellings is still huge, the pitting is still evident but i do think the antibiotics is helping some.
But I really wish I could know what this is as its very worrying. The docs couldn't see a problem with my heart, liver or kidneys. I have also been tested for DVT and gout. My blood sugar is fine. The only possible resolution is that it cold have some link with the hot weather, but that wasn't confirmed.
Has anyone else had severe painful edema in both legs and the doctors couldn't find a diagnosis?
My current medications I take regularly are: Mirtazapine 45 mg and Hydroxyzine 25mg.
Can anyone advice or share their experiences? Is there anything I can do to help minimise the risk of this happening again? If this is heat related, I'm going to have a hell time every time it gets hot. But surely 'hot weather' cant just be the only explanation there is why I have major swelling in both my legs and feet.

My 50 year old husband has been a Type 1 diabetic since he was 21. It was a late presenting of juvenile diabetes or so they said then. He has always done well managing his diabetes, wearing a pump for the past 15 or so years. In the past week or so, he has begun to have severe pain/tingling in his feet/ankles - mainly at night when he is trying to go to sleep. He usually has to get up and walk several times before he can finally sleep - he is only getting about four hours of sleep per night. He has an appointment with his dr - but not until the week after New Years.

We need water to survive. Our bodies don't function properly without it. This is a fact. When our defense system, Exa: our lymphatic system, bowels and urinary systems.. when these systems become clogged and fail to work properly we may become ill, start to retain fluids and developers all manner of conditions, disorders and diseases. If we develope edemas, swelling, water retention doctors may prescribe water pills or diuretics. In severe cases the doctor may restrict water intake. Do you have a situation like this? Tell me what you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What beverage do you have with your meals? I'd like to ask some questions, get some answers and perhaps share some food for thought.

I have been diagnosed with WG and am on the usual medication.
WG attacked my nervous system. My feet are swollen and movement is painful. At night the swellings subsided but the moment I get up and move around the swelling flares up.
My hands have also been affected. The fingers are dead, no feeling and no muscle movement possible - cannot use the left hand at all. The right hand I can still use but the skin feels numb.

I'm 17 years old, 6 ft. 175lbs and frequent soccer player. Starting my sophomore year in Highschool I would get a cramp in both of my calves when I started jogging or running for long periods at a time. In pre season I pulled an area of my hamstring badly, not sure of the specifics but I believe it's the connector of your butt and hamstring. I had continued to play on it until I started physical therapy and addressed it( I would still get cramps when playing on it) I was diagnosed as having plantar fasciitis and began working on my calves and feet in physical therapy. Still nothing solved this, and I was fit while being only age 16 at the time. Still had calf cramps. I turned to custom orthotics which took months to break in until one game I noticed a huge change. I ran at a decent speed for a whole game, our team had no subs so I was forced to stay I although with little cramps, the day after I could barely walk. That was the last full game I played at center defense. Ever since that game I noticed that my butt sticks out more because it seems my pelvis is out of line. The cramps persisted after even though I had gone a game with no cramps. Conditioning still had no effect as after even 2 laps I would begin feeling strong tension. I ended up breaking my ankle junior season for soccer in Highschool and am now getting back into things, except that I can't run more than 5 minutes. My right hip is abducted( turns inward) and it was never like this before. I'm result my back is tighter, my knees rotate in, and basically my whole lower body is torqued and the muscles have unbelievable tightness. Wondering if this sounds like compartmentalism?

I have had for many years twitching in both calves. The twitching looks like a rippling motion, primarily when at rest, but I can feel the ripple when the calves are not at rest. I have not seen anyone about this and am not aware of what may be causing it.

Whenever i go jogging, within 5-10 minutes, the calf muscles near my shin starts cramping/tightening up, I think it's the soleus. Usually one leg cramps up a lot more than the other but not tired one bit. I run on asic gel 1100, got them about 3 weeks ago and i run on a trail in a park. Also sometimes my calves don't cramp up but instead my hips hurt. Is it my running form or something else?

Seen my dr today. Had to get my bloods done as well. My gp didn't know anything about the dent in my forehead, she seen it and felt it. She asked did I fall, my reply was no. Steroids thin the skin, I know that. Also mentioned about a terrible ache in both calves muscles when I put trainers on and try to walk a couple of yards. She asked was the ache in both calves and I said yes, her reply was then it's not achilles. She is going to chase the rheumatologist up as I haven't seen one yet. It was endocrinology who made the referral to a Rheumatologist so gp is going to chase it up. I feel I am going it alone, other than this website, I would be totally lost. My gp is good she was off when I was going for pain relief and was still undiagnosed and then diagnosed by a locum dr. in the practice.

I suffer from chronic migraines for which I have been hospitalised on several occasions and I have always had a 'bad stomach' which has been diagnosed as functional dyspepsia, IBS and colitis at various times of my life. Last year I started having really bad pains in my hands, wrists, ankles and feet which feel swollen. If I exercise, my whole body aches and I simply cannot do the things that used to be easy for me. I'm even having difficulty doing the ironing and chopping the vegetables. Having always been a good sleeper, I now have periods of bad sleep and I always seem to be exhausted. Until last year I used to go the gym four times each week and I'v always been fit. Now I'm a wreck.
I've been seeing a neurologist for my migraines and a gastroenterologist for my stomach problems but nobody seems to see the big picture.
Do you think I could have fibromyalgia?

After finding I had high blood pressure a year ago I was put on Amlodipine I had really bad side effects with swollen ankles and a really bad rash.
My medication was changed to losartan 50 mg and Atorvastatin 20mg. Although this combination is keeping my Blood Pressure down. I still have a weakness in my ankles and a slight remaining problem with my skin on my ankles.
I would have thought these problems would have disappeared completely after stopping Amlodipine . But now I am thinking it's the statins that is stopping the side effects in my legs from disappearing completely.

I have been taking Cialis for 5 days now, 5 mg, once daily for enlarged prostate.
Last night I got a bad back ache which I did not think was related to the Cialis. My back hurts literally from my shoulder blades to my ankles.
Can this possibly be from the Cialis?
Back pain with Cialis is listed as minor. This is a serious back ache, both legs and hips throb as well as lower back and as I said all the way up to the shoulder blades.

My Father in law (72) is suffering terribly with his legs.
Had Diabetes for years but just recently his ankles have swollen terribly and he can hardly stand or walk. For someone used to being active, it's been a terrible time for him.
I watched him try to stand the other day and it looked complete agony. He can't understand why no-one can tell him what is wrong, doctors are saying "it's your diabetics, you have to expect it"...
His doctor won't give him extra pain management because he says it will impact his other medication, but I just don't see how he can continue with all this pain. How we get the best treatment as I don't think he is getting it at the moment.

I have been suffering from a rash on my ankles. The major symptoms I would say are a very itchy rash that waters when I scratch, and more prominently, 'dead' skin forms around my ankle and peels. The skin also seems to be getting tougher (maybe due to the scratching).
I have been to 2 doctors so far. The first felt it was contact dermatitis and gave me a corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) which cleared it up for some months but then it came back again. I've been to another doctor 2 weeks ago who gave me an antifungal cream (daktarin), but after 2 weeks of applying, I can't see any significant improvement to be honest. In fact, the infection spread to the left ankle only after I had started this treatment. I don't know if there's a connection. I would be seeing a specialist next if this treatment fails but I would like to have a good idea of what it might be.

Fractured and dislocated my ankle after slipping on a muddy path 17th Dec 2015 After 10 days bed rest and foot elevation in hospital to get the swelling down over Christmas I had 9 screws into fibula and a metal plate and screws into bone on other side of ankle. In a cast for 2 weeks then Xrayed and assessed and another cast put on for 4 weeks. Dissolvable stitches and ankle alignment satisfactory.
2 more weeks until consultant visit to assess maybe given a boot.
Very painful for a week after 2nd cast put on but settling down now. Using a wheelchair to propel myself around the house. Living downstairs but been upstairs 3 times backwards on my bottom pushing up with good leg wearing a trainer for grip. Good exercise!
Was initially given a zimmer by hospital but very unsteady and not confident on crutches. Will hopefully use them when allowed to put some pressure on injured ankle.
Some nights I have to take paracetamol particularly if the ankle has not been elevated enough during the day. I sleep a lot more but presume it is to do with the healing process. Drinking a lot of milk and a VitD pill once a day with plenty of protein foods which I hope will encourage bone healing.
Was very active but not able to do much apart from knitting and sewing. Try to do a bit of housework each morning but have temporarily employed a cleaner. Thankful it is winter and no gardening necessary yet.
Encourageing to see how other broken ankles progress. No physio for me yet but I do Pilates exercises each morning in bed before putting ankle down for another day.

Within the last 2/3 weeks, I have noticed welts (very large and warm) on certain parts of my body, mainly around my ankles, hips, backs of my knees, and one spot on my spine. At first, I thought it was an allergy to my laundry detergent, so I started making my own because I am allergic to everything else. After switching soaps, I noticed that the hives/welts subsided but then after a couple days, I got 2 on my spine again. One welt was about the size of a silver dollar and the other, about four inches lower on my spine, about the size of a quarter. Later that night, the left side of my lower lip randomly got very warm and started to swell. It looked as though I had been stung by a bee. There was no pain other than the uncomfortable tightness.
Any ideas on what could be the cause? I can't get into my doctor for quite some time, and I prefer to avoid the emergency room since it doesn't seem that serious but I'd really like an idea of what in the world is going on.
Update 12/16/13-This morning I woke up with one nickel sized welt on each arm, just below my elbows.

I am 51, broke my left ankle on a hiking trip on Friday, had a surgery on Sunday night.
Generally things are getting better : much less pain, can wiggle my toes, but there is a persistent numbness on top side of big toe and second toe.
Looks like it might be some post-op nerve damage, because it is not getting worse and does not affect the mobility of toes. Decided not to go to emerg, that would mean sitting there for 6 hours before any doc will come to see me. But if it would become worse, then I would go.
Also : feeling very unsafe with crutches, in particular when home alone. Using a portable wheelchair instead for the trips to the bathroom, getting food from the kitchen, etc.
