Neurology :: Hair Loss With Scalp Pain And Normal Labs
Jan 26, 2015
My hair has been falling out for 4 years and I also have scalp pain. It feels like someone has been pulling my hair.
Out on the occipital area. The pain comes and goes. I have had a biopsy by a dermatologist, which was inconclusive.
I had an MRI, that was normal. Does anyone know who I should see or what to do? All labs normal!

my daughter is 18 years old and has lost muscle tissue in her left hand the doctors recommended x-ray and MRI and also EMG all the results came out normal. the problem is she cant put her socks on and hold things with her hand at times. so I guess my question is has this been heard of. also we went to even a centre for reconstructive surgery and he was also confused saying he has never seen a case like this. My daughter is frustrated and we have no answers.

My mother is a 65 year old female, 136 lbs, and on peritoneal dialysis for 3 years due to End Stage Renal Disease. Last week, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain that was a burning/gnawing pain. She went to the hospital and a CT Abdomen was taken without contrast. All was normal.
Over the next four (4) days, the pain persisted, particularly during dialysis exchanges at home. She returned to the hospital who admitted her. Another CT Abdomen was taken at this time which showed "nodular contour on the liver", free air in transverse colon which appeared to be dilated. She was also constipated for several days during this period. The CT impression suggested clinical evaluation for chronic liver disease.
A standard liver panel was taken and all results were normal. Nothing even close to elevated. She has never had a history of any liver issues and never had anything show on a CT for liver. After a day in the hospital, all stomach pain disappeared, she was able to use the restroom, and all stool samples/GI tests were normal without blood. She is naturally anemic due to ESRD with low iron/protein. Her last ANA/autoimmune panel was in December, all clear. No history of any hepatitis.
An Ultrasound Right Upper Quadrant was performed and the impression was no biliary obstruction, moderate ascites (tends to be normal due to peritoneal dialysis fluid), and "heterogeneous liver." The impression suggested referral for cirrhosis evaluation.
She began taking Hydralazine (25mg/3 times daily) in the last 3-4 months. She also takes a host of other blood pressure medicines.
QUESTION: She is currently awaiting a kidney transplant and very worried about this. A blood test will be taken in a couple weeks by a specialist that is supposed to diagnose Cirrhosis. Given this presentation alone, what other causes could explain this imaging results? Should we fear the worst?

Anyone else experiencing shingles type symptoms but it's not following the normal pattern?
I was diagnosed with shingles october 2013..... It was located on my right head/face/ear area. I remember having bumps in my hair/scalp... above my ear, weeks to few months prior to official diagnoses. Since then I have a continuous recurrence and take antiviral daily. However the pox shows up on other areas now on face and body.

I am a 20 year old female. for the past 8 months i have had pains in my legs shooting down from my buttocks to my knees in both legs but is worse in my left leg but only while I'm sitting down and after i sit for 10 minutes i start to get pins and needles in my left foot and it is starting to happen more frequently and more painfully as time goes by it makes it hard to drive anywhere and painful to be sitting down. I have had a full spinal MRI and my spine is normal.
i feel like I'm always sick and when i get a cold/flu it never goes away at the moment i have a cough sore throat headaches which i have taken antibiotics for and it went away after 2 weeks of antibiotics but as soon as i stopped taking them it came back even worse. I am constantly yawning and tired.
I had a blood test and my WBC count was low 1.6 but everything else in the test came back normal negative for arthritis. The doctor has said to have another test but he said the low WBC count is most likely just low because of a virus?I have also been loosing hair. It is all making me stressed so the hair loss could be because of that but i don't know are all these symptoms connected? Could the pins and needles and pains be from lupus or another autoimmune disease? i am sick of going to doctors and spending money on MRIs which are useless.

Three weeks ago I noticed my daughter (age 38) could not remember anything from 10 or 15 minutes and kept asking the same questions - She seemed confused. I took her to the hospital and they began running test. After 2 days she was having difficulty standing so I had to help her stand and then she could walk - after 4 days she could not stand or walk at all. Her legs and arms both have some numbness, burning sensations, and pain. The MRI scan shows no issues - they have run MRI, CatScan, EEG, EMG, Muscle Biopsy, Spinal Tap, all sorts of blood work and after three weeks have found nothing except some vitamin deficiency. She still cannot walk and has confusion and short term memory - Has anyone heard of anything like this. Is it possible that is vitamin deficiency?

I began seeing bald patches on my head: one rather large one and 2 smaller ones. I also am losing a ton of hair each day. I have been diagnosed with a ferritin level of 8 and an iron level of 28. I am taking 325 mg of iron 3 times a day along with other vitamins. Approximately how long before I see an improvement in hair fallout and regrowth. I am also seeing a dermatologist for corticosteriod injections to help with regrowth in the completely bald spots. I am strongly considering shaving my whole head?

I might have had 2 or 3 mild headaches in my life.
6 months ago i had most of my pituitary gland removed due to Cushing's Disease.
3 months ago i had a visual field test that showed possible swelling around the optic nerve.
6 weeks ago i started waking with headaches at about 4.30am ! i would sleep more then wake later with less of a headache but when i stood up i would get a whooshing sound in my ears and a throbbing in the top of my head. i told me GP. She said its normal when you first stand up ( Normal My #$$, if it was normal wouldnt it have been happening all my life, anyway i digress lol ). So i had these headaches, i got blurred vision and my blood pressure went up to 234/127. So off i go to hospital for 4 days. They played around with my blood pressure meds and sent me home. I still had headaches, blurred vision and my BP was 180/105( now on 4 different BP meds ).
2 weeks ago i went and had a repeat of my visual field test. The Opthmalogist wasnt too happy, basically told me one quadrant of my vision in my left eye was gone. Said he would speak to my Endocrinologist !
2 days later i noticed what i can only describe as a smudge in my vision...very annoying, but not painful and yes i can still see. but im not driving, im too scared to. I drove one day and as it got darker i couldnt tell where the other cars on the road were, kind of a distortion thing i guess
My Endocrinologist rang the next day and said i need to go for an urgent MRI...so i did.
That was 1 week ago. i have had no results, no phone calls. But i did get a letter advising me i have a Neurology outpatient appointment on 13th october ! i rang to confirm as i was waiting for an endocrine appointment. Hospital said, yes, the neurosurgeon refered you to neurolgy following your MRI. Hmmm thanks for that.
So now im trying to guess whats going on. Did my MRI show up something, if so what?, if not then why am i being referred to neurology?
I hate being in the dark. Yes i know i only have 2 weeks til i find out, but 2 weeks is hell when your second guessing.
Summary : i still have headaches ( they are for the most part mild, throbbing when i stand followed by whooshing in ears), vision has maybe slightly improved in last 2 days but still not normal. Blood pressure is still sitting around 180/105

I am a 25 year old female and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease probably around 2012 or so. I take 75MCG every morning and I do blood tests about once or twice a year to make sure my levels are stable. What I need help with are symptoms. My boyfriend has been very supportive, he was the reason I went to get the initial blood test because he said my symptoms reminded him of Graves Disease and it worried him. Well, I went to the doctor and got the tests done and he told me I had Hashimotos. Since then, my boyfriend has told me that he hasn't seen any improvement in my symptoms, in fact he thinks they've gotten worse. I have looked at a lot of different lists of symptoms that people with Hashimoto's Disease can experience and I experience a lot of them. I'll list the ones I experience the most and a little bit of a description to each so maybe someone can help me with what I need to do to feel better because honestly it makes me miserable.
-Hair Loss - Every time I brush or wash my hair there is always tons of hair in the brush or tub. It's everywhere all the time, I shed like the cats.
- Depression - I don't know if it is actually depression, but a lot of the time I feel like I'm just not good enough to be around anyone. I'll find myself crying at ridiculous moments with absolutely no reason for it. I also find myself thinking that people I know (and can acknowledge even when I'm feeling this way) love and care for me, and yet I still think they don't care about me and will abandon me at the drop of the hat, which breaks me down mentally.
- Stress - This is probably one of my worst symptoms. I am always stressed out about something, even ridiculous things that shouldn't be stressing me out. One of the biggest things I stress about is what I mentioned with the depression. I feel like my friends and loved ones are going to abandon me at any minute, which scares me and results in me lashing out at them in ways that if I can't control it soon enough may result in them actually leaving, which terrifies me and just puts me into a never ending loop of stress and depression.
- Anger - I can't seem to rationalize other people's behaviors. Completely normal behaviors that don't normally bother me result in me lashing out and screaming at people and saying things that I don't mean to say.
- Memory Loss - This is a really bad symptom. I forget things very quickly. If I don't actively keep it in my mind, I won't remember it. A perfect example, when I was still in college I was walking through town with some people and when we were going back to the dorms I made a comment about a truck I saw. I used to see it all the time and hadn't seen it in a while so I made the comment. The people I was with looked at me really confused and just flatly stated "You said the exact same thing when we walked by it on the way out" and I honestly don't remember seeing it at any point that day. In fact I didn't remember seeing it for around 5 months, and yet they claimed that I made the exact same comment I just had, earlier that day. It really messes with my head when people tell me that I did or said something and I can't remember doing it to save my life.
- Weight - Before I started taking synthroid I weighed 110 lbs, after I started taking it I gained like 30 lbs and I can't lose it. I'm stuck between 135 and 140 (I'm about 5'6" tall)
- Headaches - I get headaches on a daily basis. Sometimes they're really bad but generally they're just a slight discomfort in my frontal lobe area.
- Sleep - It takes me forever to fall asleep and even when I do I can't stay asleep and then I feel exhausted all day when I wake up, as if I never slept at all.
Another thing I've noticed and that is that sometimes I feel like I can't swallow properly, I always feel like I have to yawn to get a lung full of oxygen, and my nails curl downward along the curve of the tip of my fingers on like 3/5 fingers.

For the past year, I've been losing my eyebrows in patches. Patches will grow back, but then fall out weeks/moths later. I'm a 38-year-old female, healthy and fit. Recent blood work all normal. Thyroids normal. I'm not losing hair anywhere else, and my skin has no redness or dryness. It is just my eyebrows that keep falling out. The only thing I could think of was my birth control--I was on the Mirena IUD. But I removed it and ceased all birth control several months ago and the problem persists. All doctors I've visited have been stumped, thus my online question.

So a week today (last thursday) i had a back wisdom tooth removed after it was hurting for a few days, the x-ray showed a small infection underneath.
I had it removed and then was told to do the 'warm water and salt' swill for a few days. 3 Days are removal i was getting a sensitive scalp, ear ache and a lot of jaw pain so i went and got some Amoxicillin from my local doctor. The ear ache, jaw pain and sensitive scalp have gone but the whole is huge and i can see yellow in it which is obviously the infection. I'm on day 4 of 7 for my antibiotics and it does look 'less angry' (pink as opposed to red) but can still see rubbish and the gum is still swollen.
Yesterday i also noticed the inside of my gum near the tooth has white lumps and my tongue was white and sore which i'm guessing is Thrush?

I'm 15 years of age and I'm seeing the first signs of baldness, with some hairline recession and the sensitive sensation. My hair loss is hereditary. My mom also had the same issue and she did a hair transplant surgery with the help of an expert surgeon in the Seager medical group, Toronto. I wonder whether I'm able to do the same at this age. I don't want to be bald at this age, it's affecting my confidence. Any thoughts?

I have had these little oily, greasy yellow bumps on my head for about 2 years now and they tend to fall off whenever I scratch them. I have had REALLY thick hair but since this dandruff crisis started on me I only have half of the original amount of my hair now. Please, help!! If you're experiencing this problem then please state below how you control/get rid of it and if you used to have this kind of dandruff and cured it, will my hair grow back and return to normal? I seriously want my old hair back.

I went through about a week and a half of depressions (what I believe was). Lack of appetite, trouble sleeping and crying randomly. Immediately my hair began to shed. I understand that hair usually sheds 2-3 months after a stressful period,(telogen effluvium is what it's called) but mine started right when I became depressed. I don't have bald patches anywhere, it's just all over shedding. It's been going on for about a month now, my hair doesn't really feel thinner yet but I know it will if this continues. I can wear my hair down or else it'll be all over. I wear it in loose buns. Brushing it is emotionally difficult because my hair brush will be full in 2 strokes. I'm 19 and female. I feel like I'm slowly getting uglier and uglier. I'm not depressed anymore, I feel back to myself. But it's still shedding. It makes no sense to me. I eat healthy and exercise. How long should I expect this to occur, since it can't be telogen effluvium? What is happening?

I’m female, 52 and due to my high cholesterol levels and family history of coronary disease, my physician had me start taking Zocor (simvastatin). I’ve been on this medication for almost six months now and from the last month I’ve been starting to lose more and more hair. When I asked my doctor is Zocor causing this, he completely denied that was possible and instead sent me to various hormonal tests. They all were in normal ranges.
After this I decided to take the matter into my own hands and continue with healthy diet, exercise and no Zocor (but I do use red rice supplement instead) and finally my hair is not falling off any more.

I am 4 days from ending 6 month treatment with Sol. and Riba. 3A. No one on this forum has mentioned hair loss. I've lost a ton and being male, it's a real drag. I am wondering how long it will take to grow back, if at all. Solvaldi is so much better than interferon, but the riba is still a real drag. I tried twice to make it thru the old chemo treatment. Longest I could last was 5 months. At least this time I have made it to the end.
