Neck Pain :: MRI And Found A Disc Pinching The Nerve
Apr 8, 2009
I have been suffering from neck, shoulder and arm pain for over 3 weeks. My own Dr just gave me pain killers and Diazepam. However nothing helped and sleep was impossible. In desperation I went to a private Dr and had a private MRI scan which confirmed the disc prob. He also gave me stronger pain killers which seem to have an adverse effect on me. Feeling sick and faint. Now he has referred me to a private "skeletal" consultant - my own NHS Dr said I needed a Rheumatologist which of course takes weeks. If anyone else has taken this path I would be most grateful to receive suggestions and, if these things can be cured.

I'm wondering if anyone has found any ways to get nerve pain relief. My nerve pain is excruciating from my knee to my foot in my right leg. Also experiencing significant atrophy.
I have a disc bulge/protrusion at L5/S1 impinging S1 nerve root.
Painkillers don't help the nerve pain at all. Wondering if anyone has found any ways to lay down, ice, anything to help take the nerve pain away that I could try.

Hi all, before xmas my back started to get sore but i thought with 2 weeks rest during the holiday it would get better. Day before i was due to go back to work it was really bad. I went to the osteopath and it felt like he had fixed it so i was pleased. Few days after i started to get pains from the top of my buttock all the way down my leg into my foot, I then realized that i had sciatica. The pain is really nasty and i get pins and needles in some of my foot and calf. It has stopped me walking properly and i limp about. Week ago i had an MRI scan and it revealed that one of the discs is trapping the nerve. I have good and bad days but i cant walk properly and pain killers really help. I went back to the doctor today and he thinks from the results of the scan i should arrange to have surgery as it hasn't improved over 8 weeks. I really don't want to go to hospital as it seems extreme and i haven't tried any of the other options.

My brother is on disability. He has a bulging disk in his neck that is making him dizzy. He has fallen several times because of this and frequently has to sit down. His insurance company won't cover the surgery. Is there anything I can do or something he can do to ease the pain? It makes me so sad that he is in such pain and can't afford to get help.

I'm a 34yr old healthy male. I do not have Diabetes. I don't smoke and very rarely drink alcohol. I'm a vegetarian. I feel pinching sensation and pricking sensation (just like when we sit for long time in same position & get that sensation) in my foot when i travel in a cab/car & also rarely at home/office. My blood sugar levels are in normal range ( got tested recently). May i know why this might be happening. I'm worried.

I have been off work since last September. when one morning I woke up and thought I was going to be paralysed as I was I the most severe pain in my neck, but actually couldn't move. I was given diazepam to relax the muscle spasms. Already on tramadol but also given cocodamol. Saw chiropractor for 6 weeks. Wasn't happy there though. Slowly regained more movement in my neck but the pain was getting worse and my shoulder and arm in excruciating pain. Can't lift arm up or behind my back. Putting certain items of clothing on causes sudden pain that makes me want to scream out and maybe faint sometimes. I hope I don't offend but going to the toilet is a feat. I feel like a fraud to others as you can't see this and it is the most painful thing ever. I have had 5 children and this is worse. I've seen a spine Physio today and being referred for MRI. She seems to think I have now developed frozen shoulder on top of neck problem too. I'm exhausted from it all. Bit nervous. I feel a fraction of the person I was 7 months ago. Thank you for listening to me wittering on about myself.

I have been told that I have two disc bulges at c3-4 and c5-6 in my neck. There is also a large broad based posterior left paracentral and intraforaminal disc protrusion at c6-7 that is compressing the nerve.
I am being referred on to a specialist but that is ages away. I would be greatful for any advice in terms of
(1) what is the likely solution for this diagnosis i.e can physio sort this out or will it be an op?
(2) are there any immediate dangers ?
(3) can i still exercise?

how do you cope? One year ago I fell downstairs (vertigo) fractured my neck and had severe pain in upper left arm, felt like a very bad bruise and a swollen but not broken wrist. Neck healed, pain in my upper arm remained and could move it but not do up bra etc without severe pain. Had an injection in my shoulder - made it worse. 11 months on I fell down a shorter flight of stairs (return of vertigo!) on to same bad shoulder/arm. Now frozen and pain from neck to finger tips all the time and even worse at night. Can't take oral pain relief tablets has anyone tried pain relief patches? The pain is so bad I can't do anything and I am getting seriously depressed and being driven to despair, its like being in constant childbirth labour! constantly having to massage my arm including from elbow to wrist and palm of hand into fingers. Given conflicting advice by every medical person seen so far. Seems it is likely multiple problems but still no MRI, xray shows no broken bones in shoulder. Read most of the discussions, not many triggered by injury unless I have missed those. Any support groups locally in Cornwall where we could at least cry openly!

so today I saw the consultant, what a let down! The guy went through what happened first, then asked me some questions about the pain etc and got me to walk, tip toes, etc etc. then em said he won't operate. Instead will give me a root nerve injection. I'm totally terrified of needles and the thought of this is driving me mad my my fiancée who was with me didn't like him too much and neither did I. He didn't seem like he was on this planet! he kept asking me questions I couldn't answer. The pain killers mask virtually all my pain. The only pain I get is in my back and if I try to come down a dose, I get horrendous pain in my leg down to my heel and back. His attitude was, you're obviously not in that much pain today so we won't even think about an operation!
He was reading a letter from the pain clinic doctor who said I'm not a suitable candidate for an operation, yet the Orthopedic specialist I saw said I need an operation without a shadow of a doubt!
i have a friend who has had an l5s1 fusion, and he said don't have the nerve root injection. Someone who had one at the same time of him hasn't walked properly ever again.
So if I don't do the nerve root, can I take anti inflammatories instead? He said he wants to do it as a diagnosis.

It started 9 months ago with a back pain, got diclofenac from doctor, then got sharp pain down left leg, went back and he said just take the diclofenac. It didn't improve so went privately to a physio, he said I was rotating my leg so sent me to a podiatrist and I paid £300 for insoles but they didn't do any good. Went privately to a chiropractor and osteopath -no help. Finally after another 6 weeks I went to NHS physio and he thought it might be a disc, had useless exercises to do while waiting for appointment with consultant then waited for MRI scan then another 2 weeks to see consultant. Diagnosed with 2 large prolapses, one of which is completely squashing sciatic nerve. In a lot of pain and can't get much sleep. Still working as don't want to lie around bored at home all day, luckily it's a part time sitting down job. Consultant says I can have op if I want but I've decided to try pain clinic first as he said it will get better eventually, so will try epidural steroid injection in 2 weeks time. Fingers crossed, existing on co-codamol at moment, others have side effects.

About 9 weeks ago I went to a massage parlour and received oral sex.
Maybe about 1 minute without a condom. She then put the condom on and started. I showered and went home. 2 days later I woke up to painful pinching Feelings in my penis. The head of my penis looked bright red and kind of flakey. No visible sores. I had the usual std tests about a week later. All negative. The pinching lasted for about 5-6 weeks. I went for another round of std tests. All negative. My doctor gave me an anti fungal creams but it just seemed to irritate it..I ended up taking fluconazole antifungal pill. Maybe it helped? I've been going through extreme anxiety since this encounter.
I took the igg herpes blood test at 8 weeks. Negative. Going to my doctor tomorrow to see the numbers.

I have been experiencing the lower back pain which is local from last 5 years. My MRI reports says that there is a central disc bulge at l5/s1. Where outer annular tear is intact.
I have seen a chiropractor who has recommended spinal disc decompression sessions on Hill DT.
As per the doctor, it will relocate the disc back to its normal position and make the disc healthier as before.
Just would like to know if someone has gone for the similar treatment for the similar problem. If yes kindly share your experience.

I had a shot of cortisone for tarsal tunnel today. My pain is normally not constant. The pain occurs intermittent behind the ankle bone there is a sharp pinching. Since yesterday it was horrible and pinching like crazy. I could barely walk normal today so i went to podiatrist. For the past few months I had been seeking treatment ( ART, graston, chiro and ultrasound). I've also been doing strength exercises.
When you experienced the TT was it always constant and did cortisone ever help. If it helped how long before you noticed a difference.

Had stroke 13 years ago. Have suffered anxiety ever since. Mainly dizziness. Recently came off citalopram after 8 years, started on sertraline. Never felt worse in my life......including severe diarrhea. Dr now stopped sertraline and put me on propranolol one week ago. Still feel awful and dizziness possibly worse. Will anything ever work?

I have had pain on the left side of my neck for about three years now. About 4 months ago I felt a Marble size bump on the same side as my neck pain. My neck pain does not stop me from doing things. I can move it side to side and up and down etc. The neck pain is more like a pain that doesn't go away but like I said it doesn't stop me from doing things. What could this be? Can anyone help me with this? I have a doctors appointment at the end of September.

I have been getting pain for a couple month in my lower back, but it's only been very mild pain. I started getting the pain after very heavy deadlifts at the gym, then the pain has been sporadic for that time.
I went for sprints on Sunday morning and then afterwards my lower back was really in pain. I felt sick and dizzy in the evening for about 2 mins, then it quickly passed. However, since Sunday I have been experiencing mild abdominal pains in the mid abdomen area (near the belly button) and my bowel movement has changed as i haven't been going as regularly the last few days.
I am just curious as I haven't been to the doctors yet. I wanted to go and see the best doctor at my surgery, but unfortunately he isn't available until next tuesday. If it gets worse then I will definitely make an appointment with another doctor, but at the moment it isn't giving me too much problems, just the mild pain is all.
Has anyone experienced this before and could it be a slipped disc that is causing the stomach pain and lack of bowel movement? I had no problems before Sunday when I think I further injured my back.

And now 4 days into this pain I have a large lump I can feel under the skin about the size of a 10p its about 3cm from the bum crack and is extremely sore to touch has anyone any idea if this is related to my other problems or something else as I don't know weather to go doctors or wait for my next physio.

Is there a difference between disc displacement and dislocation? I see those terms being used around here a lot and was wondering if one indicates whether a disc could be recaptured and whether a disc is not reducing?
