Menopause :: Light Flashes At The Peripheral Edge Of Vision?
May 10, 2016
Anyone else experience flashes of light at the peripheral edge of their vision?
Over the last week I keep having them and swing my head round, like a flash has gone off.

I am pregnant with my second child and 20 weeks into the pregnancy. I have had some really bad headaches this entire pregnancy so far but the dr told me that's typical as I had some severe headaches before pregnancy. Now the headaches have gotten worse, about a week ago I started suffering from blind spots in my right eye and every time I would close my eyes I would see this bright ring flash in both eyes. After about two days of this I went to my eye dr who said my actual eye is fine but it may be a neuro issue. Well it has continued but I don't have insurance nor a lot of money so I have been to another dr yet and last night and today I am also suffering from temporary hearing loss when my headaches get bad and my vision starts leaving me (now in both eyes) . I am scared out of my mind and just trying to figure out some type of explanation as to what might be going on.
View 3 RepliesI'm not particularly worried about this but I'd rather know what it is. I quite commonly will get, after stretching or getting up suddenly, flying black dots in my peripheral vision. These tiny black dots just appear, fly in a direction, then disappear. A bit like a swarm of flies in the corner of my eye except they keep appearing and disappearing individually. It might last up to five seconds or so. Then it's gone and I feel fine. I'm pretty sure I've had this for years.
View 1 RepliesI'm wondering if anyone has ever experienced distortion in their peripheral vision. It's a bit difficult to explain, but it's almost like objects are a different shape in my peripheral vision than when I look straight at them. It often looks like straight lines are bent in my peripheral vision, or objects just seem to shift position but then shift back when I look back at them. Sounds very odd I know. I do have astigmatism on both eyes, but is this a normal symptom of that?
I have some other odd visual symptoms, such as trembling vision (straight lines appear to tremble) and light sensitivity. I had a virus about 6 weeks ago which I'm still struggling to recover from - achiness, fatigue, some muscle weakness. I've had blood tests, MRI brain scan and my eyes fully inspected by 2 ophthalmologists.
About a year ago or so I started to notice a change in my Peripheral vision. I found myself having to completely look to my right while driving because of a blind spot and I also noticed when I shaved my underarms I could no longer see them (very blurry) if that makes any sense. I didn't have and insurance so I had to wait. Fast forward to last month. I saw an Ophthalmologist thinking it was vision problems of some sort. Well, I miserably failed the test that checks for peripheral vision. He then looked at the optic nerve and didn't see anything that would suggest normal vision loss. He said I have lost almost all Peripheral vision in my right eye and a good amount on my left. He referred me to a neurologist that I will see this Monday. I was glad because I had also been having some issues with what seems like pinched nerves in the neck and shoulders, I thought it could be related to some nerve issues. So my other issue which I didn't correlate as being possibly related until today is that I have been having some major digestive problems that have flared up on and off since February. I am having a lot of indigestion, gas and constipation.. The constipation is pretty bad, sometimes I can't go and I resort to taking laxatives for relief. And I have this really annoying muscle twitching in my lower abdomen! It feels like a vibration, I have been having that for a couple of weeks now. I have been so miserable that I made an appt for next week to see a gastro doctor. But then tonight I Googled the vibrating issue and was noticing that there were many people on MS boards with similar problems. And then it hit me that there seems to be a lot of coincidences between my issues and MS. Now I am worried. Did any of you experience similarities before a diagnosis? And how are people diagnosed?
View 3 RepliesI've recently discovered that i have flashes(just tiny little ones) sometimes, and it happens when i look to the left then downwards. My prescription is -1.75 and -2.00 and i haven't experienced floaters so far. Is this normal?
View 1 RepliesI flashes of light and eye twitches. Sometimes, I do not know which one is which. Sometimes I feel like when my eye twitches, it looks like flashing lights. Sometimes not. I went to a retinal specialist about 2 days ago to rule out any retinal detachment and retinal tear. There is none. Although I was diagnosed with lattice degeneration. But I am still seeing the flashes. What are they? They are really bothering me. Sometimes I feel like I am paranoid.

View 1 RepliesI have been seeing pin point flashes in my eye for a long time, a few months now. they vary in color from red to silver. they last for half a second and appear out of nowhere with no warning signs. i have also been seeing a lots of floaters which appear as moving dark black lines rather than squiggly bubbles ( i see the squiggly bubbles too but they happen rarely). the dark lines don't usually bother me unless im looking at a wall or when i'm outside. if i'm outside during daytime the frequency of seeing the dark lines greatly increases even if i'm just looking at the ground. oh there's also something else, whenever i look at the sky at daytime i see a lot of glitter moving around almost looking like shooting stars.

View 1 RepliesHi everyone, just after some advice.. My left eye started watering really bad last Wednesday, by the Friday the white of my eye was blood red, I arranged a visit to the GP who gave me chloramphenicol eye drops and if it got any worse to take myself to our local eye hospital. By the Sunday my eye was so painful, watering, bright red and light sensitive. I ended up visiting the eye hospital to be advised that I had an ulcer on my cornea. This us down to a viral infection, I was given antiviral eye ointment to put in 5 times a day for 10 days. The doc said due to my job I would probably need 2-3 days off.
I have been off 3 days now and although the pain and redness has calmed down, my eye is very sensitive to light and my sight is still blurry.
has anyone else suffered this please and how long did it take to recover and the eye to feel normal?
I have damage to my heart from chemotherapy I had as a child and it is progressing and I have now been put on Lisinopril to try to help keep it from worsening any further or as quickly. I do not have high BP (my BP tends to run normal to a little low if anything). I started on Lisinopril Wed. night and Saturday morning I went grocery shopping & while pushing the cart and walking I got extremely light headed, a little dizzy, & my vision went a little blurry, I thought I was going to pass out. I ended up having to stop and sit down for a few minutes. I was able to complete my shopping but had to stop several times throughout due to the sudden light headed feeling coming back. I have never had this happen before and I don't know if my body just needs to adjust to the Lisinopril or if it is lowering my BP too much and causing these issues. Do I just need to let my body adjust or do I need to call doc & get back off of it.
View 2 RepliesI have been experiencing daily flashes of black light and white light. The black light is complete darkness while the white light is the brightest light I have ever seen (almost fluorescent or like a camera flash). I have been experiencing these flashes since I was a very young child (1st grade-ish). The flashes are instant, but may repeat constantly for a couple of minutes. Once I went completely blind for a couple of minutes, but that was the only time that happened. I had EEG's, MRI's, and EEG's in high school. They all come back negative for seizure activity, but I still feel like electricity is going through my brain when I experience the flashes. I have always had good vision and have never needed contacts or glasses. My neurologist told me it could be a couple of things like atypical migraines or micro-seizures. Now that I'm older, I'd like to know more about what I might be experiencing or if anyone has had similar experiences?
View 1 RepliesHi, I’m hoping some people can hopefully give me some advice please regarding treatment. My history: I’m 30, diagnosed with secondary adrenal insufficiency via an insulin tolerance test. I have borderline low hypothyroidism, low prolactin. No cysts. I am 40kg, 5ft tall so I am very petite.
I currently take hydrocortisone after each meal 8am-4 mg, 12m-4mg, 3.30pm-4mg, 8pm- 3 mg. I have to take my medication following food to reduce the intensity of the spike. I also cannot tolerate more than 5mg at one time without getting awful side effects of anxiety and panic when the tablet peaks in my blood at 30 minutes. Each doe I take only lasts around 2.5-3 hours. If I am to take 10mg at once I feel ‘high’ and ‘rushy’ and anxious when it kicks in then after 3 hours its starts to drop and I feel low cortisol again.
I feel like I am swinging all day every day. I am still so fatigued, have very bad dizziness and brain fog, light sensitivity, blurred vision, weakness, leg and arm cramps, reactive hypoglycemia and achy.
4 weeks ago I ended up having an adrenal crises, yes it was horrendous and scary but I got through it and in a way it was a blessing because it has been a BIG wake up call that I need to stop being scared of trying new medication in fear of getting sicker and realised I have got to try and get myself well.
I have been so unwell since I was 21 I am now 30. ….i have lost so much of my life and I am sacred I am never going to get better or managed.
My consultant prescribes medrol a while ago and I have been too scared to start to but after my crises I started it. I am now taking 1mg Medrol in the morning and then 3 more doses of hydrocortisone at 4mg, 4mg and 2.5mg…
When I first started the Medrol I could feel it working but now its like I can not feel it and by 4 hours later I am feeling hypoglycaemic, weak nauseas etc… I am feeling so unwell after I eat a meal, like all my bodies energy is wiped out from digesting my food and im now lying in bed weak, giddy and lots of pain cramps in my arms and legs…
I have low blood pressure and my consultants suggested
fludrocortisone. I just don’t know what to do anymore. My consultants saying I shouldn’t feel so unwell and im just so lost.
Has anyone been on Medrol and can give advice on this. Im very petite, 5ft and 40 kg…I just feel so up and down and struggling with it all and also feel my symptoms get worse or better during certain times of the month..
i also cannot tolerate many carbohydrates because my blood glucose pikes very high at 1 1/2 hours post eating and drops every low by 21/2-3 hours.
I’ve now had to set up a backup carer to help when am unwell because i am on my own with 2 young children. I am getting help with them now and also trying to get support for taking them to school…im slowly getting there
I have also done a month of blood tests looking at progesterone and estrogen and have found a pattern in some of my symptoms.. I most definitely feel my worst when I am coming off my period, stopping bleeding where I start to feel cold and foggy and nauseous I then when ovulating feel at my worst and the 2 days when my estrogen was highest I had severe anxiety, tremor, agoraphobia, intense drowsiness after eating and these symptoms always disappear once I ovulate and start seeing progesterone mucous . Apart from these symptoms which come on with my cycle I suffer with all my other symptoms throughout the whole month with increase and decrease throughout my cycle.
I have included a lot of tests below and anyone who feels they can help would be so much appreciated. Thank you for your time

I paid for a whole series of blood tests. They was taken on day 4 of my period, I had fasted for 12 hours. I was salt fasted for 24 hours and remained sitting up prior to the test and during the test so the aldosterone and renin tests were accurate. The bloods were taken at 9am. I take hydrocortisone 15mg a day and took my last dose of 2.5mg at 8pm the night before the test. I was taking no supplimenst or anything else around the time of the test.

I'm not sure what happened but the hot flashes that have been relentless for about four years and up to three an hour have gone! It's been about a week now, I noticed one day that they diminished and today not one! I'm sleeping much better and I am in a great mood. No more feelings of doom . I have my 58 th birthday coming soon. Do you think I'm done? Is the nightmare over? I hope so . I am having sore breasts and I'm not sure why. I haven't had a period for about two years. Fingers crossed that they don't come back . I like this feeling, it's like the old me is back.
View 1 Repliesit has become so hard to see if i fit for peri-menopause as I do not have hot flashes at all but i seem to have all else creeping up on me. lots of women say if you don't have the hot flashes then it can not be peri...So really what is the best way to know that your entering that stage of life or not..i read alot of posts where all these woman have all these tell tale sign of menopause and instead of there doctor taking there age into consideration for menopause they all run to do all kinds of tests and this and that..is it really that difficult to decipher when in menopause or not? I'm so confused and since I'm 42 my doctor wont even talk to me about it regardless that my mother and her went into full menopause at 45 yrs old..i just hate to be running to the DR and getting all frustrated when some of my symptoms or all are peri-menopause related.
View 2 RepliesHaving really bad hot flushes for the last fortnight, there usually bearable but not recently, can any of u lovely ladies have any helpful advice or taking anything that helps, i've heard SAGE can help?
View 14 RepliesI'm having hot flashes on the hour, sweaty and I can't seen to tolerate much heat.
High fsh results of 96..don't understand what's happening to me. I'm fairly healthy, don't smoke/drink, eat 80% wholesome. I'm waiting to see an endocrinologist soon. Anyone with these symptoms? Could it be Early menopause?
Des anyone still have hot flashes despite use of estrogen?
View 1 RepliesI will be turning 47 next month. I have have been bleeding for a month now, mostly normal flow and a couple of days of spotting. Have to wear some sort of pad everyday. I did skip 2 months prior with just a couple of days of spotting. The last couple of nights I have woken burning up. I mean, I feel like I could fry an egg on my stomach, like my body is laying on a layer of hot coals. It's horrible! This lasts throughout the night. Eventually, the back of my neck will be dripping in sweat. My question is, could this be hot flashes? Can they be so painfully hot? I have also felt soooo tired and achy, joints and muscles. I can't imagine dealing with this for years.
View 1 RepliesIs this possible? My period just started today. It's been an awful day (month, really) with horrible indigestion, horrible cramps, and for the past hour or so I feel an intense heat rising in my face and spreading through my neck and chest, then it goes away. I've been wondering if I'm getting hot flashes because this is fairly new. But also, can they happen now...while I start my period?
