Knee Pain And Discomfort, Torn Cartilage, Tendon Ligament Damage

May 19, 2015

I'm 22 and have suffered with knee pain for 5-6 years now i used to play rugby but stopped about 3 years ago mainly due to my knees. i went to my gp about 2 years ago and got refered to have an mri scan, my right knee has always been worse with the pain and giving way etc so i thought it best to get that one sorted first the results came back as a small tear in the cartilage so i was refered to have 3 months physio and if any problem persist after i would be referred to a specialist. Instead after my 3 months of physio i opted to pay for some private treatment (laser treatment, electrotherapy and ultrasound)where i was also told they thought it was tendons/ligament as well as the torn cartilage as i also get trouble with my hip, anyway i started to see.some improvement gradually but sadly couldn't afford to carry this treatment on so unfortunately im back to square one, i've got an appointment with my gp again and hoping to get referred to a specialist now, just wondered what other peoples experience with something like this has been, and what the outcome was? Ive got a bit of a phobia of doctors and hospitals so it takes alot for me to get sorted and i panic about it all.

Bone / Joint :: Knee Pain: Ligament Tightness Behind Knee, Slight Knee Pain Under Kneecap

So I dislocated my knee in January of this year.  I was given a device that isolates my knee cap and hold it in place.  I wore the device off and on over the year whenever my knee would feel sort of irregular. I worked out routinely to help strengthen my knee, it helped the pain somewhat, but mostly just made me feel better about the way I looked, and kept me healthy.  I haven't worked out since some time before Thanksgiving.  Starting this week i've started to feel this new akward feeling behind my kneecap, sort of like the ligament behind my knee cap is tightening, sort of similar to how it felt when I dislocated my knee, but not exactly the same.  I get the pain after fully bending my knee, for example when I am on my knees doing my job stocking shelves at work, when I stand to my feet I can usually feel the pain.  I try doing a couple of different stretches when to make the feeling go away a bit, but it comes back, and then it eventually goes away again.

My knee "pops" (makes a loud popping noise and pressure) pretty regularly now but when I get off of work and off of my knees I experience the discomfort much less. I want to start exercising again on Monday, but I am scared I might dislocate again.  I will try using the knee cap device again tomorrow, but I feel as though whenever I use the device, it makes my knee feel like jello the next day, and make me want to use the device again, even though I was advised by my doctor that I should not need to use it regularly. ....

Torn My Meniscus Twice In My Right Knee - Pain?

I have torn my meniscus twice in my right knee. The most recent tear was a little over a month ago. I had surgery, but my knee still hurts. Several years ago I slipped and fell. I went to the doc and without tuning any test he told me it was a bad sprain. I went back once a month for 6 months and told me the same thing. I kept going back because my ankle never got any better. The swelling never went down. After 6 months it stopped hurting. Now it pops every time I move it. I went to a new doc about it and after running some tests he informed me that I had torn everything in my ankle. However, it had healed already. It heal wrong, but it had healed. Could my ankle problems be apart of my knee problems? My ankle doesn't hurt. It just pops all the time. My wife calls it Rice Krispy cause she says it snap crackle and pop all the time.

Knee :: ACL Ligament Tear In My Left Knee Numb

I have an ACL ligament tear in my left knee. This happened about five years ago. I was on waiting list & got a call to do surgery, but then I got pregnant, so I had to go back on waiting list. It must be a long list because I am still waiting. They have looked at it again because of the soreness around the knee when I walk. My doctor told me I have mild arthritis in my left knee now, but can still go through surgery.

This past week, I was in a situation where I didn't do much walking, laid around for most of day. I didn't have a pillow to use for my knee to be propped up, so I just used my right leg or had my left leg on its side when I laid down on my left side. I don't feeling anything around my knee now. It is numb! Would anyone know what is wrong? I tried to apply ice to it, but I can't feel it. I still can walk ok, though. Thanks!

Lisfranc/mid Foot Damage - Ligament - Misdiagnosed - Fusion?

Two years ago I fell onto my big toe, and heard a loud SNAP. The arch of my foot had collapsed immediately. There was a bruise on the top and bottom of my foot over the lisfranc joint. I couldn't bear weight for 1-2 weeks, can't remember exactly.

I had x-rays that showed nothing. I still don't know exactly what I did. The arch has collapsed and my foot aches all the time. I was told to have physiotherapy and wear an orthotic.

I fear I either tore slightly or completely the lisfranc ligament. Hopefully I didn't fracture anything. Recently I had a weight-bearing x-ray that showed loss of arch height and exaggerated space in the joint complex, but this was brushed off - I think, because the injury is so old.

I was told I couldn't have suffered a lisfranc or I'd still be in terrible pain; however, I have read online similar misdiagnosed subtle injuries like mine that only become painful YEARS later, by then, with more damage done.

This is how it is: I can move the cuneiform (?) quite easily with my fingers, whereas I can't with the other foot. It feels loose, but not painful when I do this. It's slightly painful if I go on the tip of my toes, just feels strained. It's also much more prominent than my other foot. The arch sags from this point, as it did when I first heard the snap.

Has anyone else had an old ligament tear, gotten by with orthotics, and had no significant problems?

I worry about arthritis setting in. Should I pursue and find out EXACTLY what I did? Or should I get by with the orthotic and if/when arthritis sets in, then have a fusion? Ignorance being bliss?

I know whatever I did, at this stage, the only thing left is fusion. I'm not sure whether this is something I should be doing sooner rather than later.

Could someone shed light on fusion? Especially if they had it young (I'm 20) and how it holds up long term etc.

Tendon Injuries :: Torn Achilles

I recently hurt my foot which turned out i have torn my Achilles. I have been suffering with the same problem for a while and its painful when i walk and it is very hard and painful for my climbing up & down stairs & walking longer distance.

Last week as i stretched to get something from a shelf i felt and hear a pop at the back of my ankle and have been in severe pain ever since. I have felt it "pop" or "snap" a few times over the years but i have never heard it and this time the pain is worse than ever.

I visited my local A&E who confirmed it was a torn Achilles. They strapped my foot/leg up with a bandage and gave me crutches and told me not to put any weight on it. I was given an emergency appointment for the next morning to visit the trauma clinic. After waiting nearly 3 hours after my appointment time i finally saw a doctor who cut the bandage off and done a few tests on my calf and ankle, i was pulling my foot away as it was extremely painful. He confirmed my Achilles had not completely ruptured but it was torn, Then went on to say it was a sprain?? that i had to keep using the crutches and not put any weight on my foot for a few weeks and to rest it. This is very difficult as i work on the first floor & we don't have a lift.

I do not understand how in the same sentence he told me my Achilles was torn but it is just a sprain.

I am now struggling and in pain constantly i was not given any pain killers, Nothing.

Should i be trying to go back or do something else as it does not seem to be getting any better and it has me completely worn out.

Shoulder Problems :: Torn Tendon

about two months ago I was lifting a heavy article and received a lot of pain which seemed to come from my bicep, the pain gradually got worse and worse so I was advised by my Doc to have a ultra scan and it showed I have a partially torn tendon in my shoulder, the pain is quite bad and I have a hell of a job finding a comfort spot in bed so I'm not getting the sleep I need and the next day I feel tired and weary all the time, the only thing  my doc advised was physio and home exercises but so far it's no better, I.m 76 years old so not as fit as I used to be and this problem has made impossible for me to do things like gardening which I love, How long do these shoulder last, will I ever get rid of it.

Sural Nerve Damage And Numbness With Achilles Tendon Surgery

Ten months ago, I had Achilles' tendon lengthening along with foot fusion surgery. Afterwards, 2/3rds of my foot on the outside edge and bottom of my foot has been numb. I kept mentioning it to my doctor, and he would say that it may take up to two years to fully recover from numbness. He even blamed the numbness on the popliteal nerve block that I had for seven days, but the anesthesiologist said that wasn't possible as the numbness started about two inches above my ankle and goes down into my foot.

Finally, I had a nerve conduction study (from my own insistence) that now confirms the injury/permanent damage to the Sural nerve. My surgeon must have nicked the Sural nerve when he did the percutaneous Achilles' tendon lengthening. It causes numbness that radiates down through my 5th metatarsal or little toe. But, 2/3rds of the bottom of my foot is also numb. Could this be from the Sural nerve or may there be other reasons for this numbness? What types of complications might occur with Sural nerve damage? How often does this occur with this type of surgery? This numbness is making it very difficult to walk. I can only walk very short distances at ten months, which is exceedingly frustrating. I am interested in hearing about others' experiences related to numbness and Sural nerve damage.

Knee / Hip :: Torn Labrum

30 year old female here. Seven years ago, I injured my right hip during martial arts. I had an AWFUL doctor at the time who said the injury was a figment of my imagination, but who ordered an xray to shut me up, and concluded that I had arthritis in my hip. Last year, I explained to my newest doctor that I had been diagnosed with arthritis and she thought that sounded like garbage, and ordered an xray herself, at which point it was concluded that I did not have arthritis and never did.

I went through PT, and while the exercises strengthened my hip, it did not help the pain. (I cannot do any cardio exercise without pain.) My PT did a bunch of test stretches with my leg and guessed I had a torn labrum.

Last week I had an MRA, and found out that my labrum is indeed torn (from the 12:00 to the 3:00 position, whatever that means.) I have some cartilage damage ("mild thinning") and some cysts around the joint. I am trying to figure out what this all means, and just how bad my tear is, before my consult with a surgeon later this month. I know that surgery for this injury can have unpredictable results. I tore my left ACL ten years ago, and for that, surgery was pretty much the only option. I would like to do martial arts again, and/or SOME kind of cardio. But I'd also like to preserve my hip joint so that I won't actually develop arthritis in the near future. Thus, I'm not sure what to do. If anyone has gone through this, I'd love to hear you stories!

Knee / Hip :: Torn Meniscus

I just found out that I have a torn meniscus in my left knee and I see a surgeon in early June. I assume it's a lateral tear for the pain is on the outside of my knee but I'm very confused by it. In the last 6 months, I've injured that area 3 times. When it was injured the pain was excruciating and I couldn't go down the stairs properly or any kind of slope - in the driveway, for example. After about two weeks I seem to be fine again and there were months in between injuring it when I was fine. So does it heal??? I do dog training where I have to run and that seems to cause the flare-ups but I can walk okay. I'm just confused - I don't want to have surgery. Anyone else have this problem?

Foot / Ankle :: Brostrom Ligament Reconstruction - Still Pain

I had a modified brostrom ligament reconstruction back in October of 2013. I am still having a LOT of pain in my ankle. It is very much more stable now that it used to be... Before the surgery it was like every step it was close to popping out of place due to the ligament, however I still have severe pain in my ankle and shin... Does anyone else experience the same issue, and any advice on what I need to do? I called the OS and they recommended me going back to the brace and although that works, I would like to at some point be without the brace, because it hurts even with the darn brace on!!!! It just feels more protected while in the brace but it doesn't stop the pain from happening.... It aches like when you have the flu, I feel achy in the ankle all the time, but w/o the brace it HURTS about a 5 out of a 10.. I have a very high pain tolerance and would say the pain is about the same as it was before the surgery.. The pain before the surgery was never so bad I couldn't deal, but it was like all day nagging pain... I am still having that pain. Is that normal 6 months after surgery?

Achilles Tendon Debridement And FHL Tendon Transfer

I am one week post op after having achilles debridement & FHL tendon transfer. It all started following having my haglund's deformity removed last November, the pain in my ankle never got better following the original surgery infact it got worse. 4 months down the line I was still only able to mobilise for no more than 2 hours.

Following physio (which made things worse) & MRI scan my surgeon still thought it was a nerve problem. I had a constant battle with the surgeons for 6 months before they would do anything. I kept telling them it was my achilles!

Anyhow, last week they operated again & said my achilles was like "mush", they then debrided it & grafted the FHL tendon & muscle. Im now in a backslab, non weight bearing & still in a considerable amount of pain. I have been told that it is going to be a long recovery!

Would be most interested in hearing how people are recovering, what your mobility is & was post op & anything else that may help. Including recovery times as my job requires me to be on my feet for a minimum of 8 hours at a time!

Two Pins In Wrist - Wrist Ligament Surgery Pain

I injured my right wrist in April, and had surgery for it in the beginning of September, I have had two pins put in my wrist to allow the ligaments to heal as well as to align my bone which had dis aligned. I'm supposed to get the pins out in two weeks, and the pain has been absolutely unbearable. The pain is on the left side of the wrist where the pins are supposed to be taken out, located just under pinky. I am told that the pain is normal but I am looking for a second opinion as even slightly I'm bending my arm causes pain in my wrist.
