Knee TKR - Advice For The First 24-48 Hours Post Op?
Aug 30, 2015
Tuesday morning is it! Tkr on the left. Any words of advice for the first 24-48 hours postop? And only a question I would ask in this forum, you aren't able to get to the washroom right away right?

hi I seem to have woken up this morning with what looks like an indent on the right side of my new knee. It was completely round last night but now has a dent in it. I am nearly 21 weeks post TKR. Anyone had anything similar and why this is?

It's day 5 I'm home and in a fair bit of discomfort! Main problem is at night and knowing what sleeping position to get into? I want to lie on my side but not sure this is ok ( about the only question I didn't ask physiotherapist ) also finding I'm very tearful today and extremely tired is this normal?

I'm 11 weeks Post Op and when I stand from sitting or getting out of bed I get this awful stiffness like someone pulling a belt tight around my knee? Does anyone get medication for what I assume is stiffness or do we just deal with it?

yesterday at work a crate of marble sink tops fell and hit the side of my knee. A huge bump formed right away but I didn't feel any pain really; just some discomfort. About three hours later I began to feel a sharp pain in my foot and it keeps getting worse. Also the bump that was on the side of my knee is now gone. Any idea what's going on?

If anyone has dealt with this or know anyone who has I would love if you would share. I'm just curious about how the operation goes (its preparations, and after). I have 2 thyroid nodules and they are pretty big and is causing phlegm, voice changes and other stuff.

All set for my TKR tomorrow - it may sound strange to some people but after such a long wait for this - I am really looking forward to this operation !! I have to be at the hospital at 7am and have been told that I am first on the list as type 2 diabetic - I am not worried about the pain post op as can be much worse than the pain this knee has dished out so far. Wish me luck - they are keeping me in for 5 days so will communicate again next weekend, with some positive comments I hope.

how much walking is enough, I'm now at 10 days , walking 3 times a day, very slow, my daughter actually counted the steps, and I'm doing 580 each time, I am tired out in late afternoon eve, but I think that's as much to do with the op , as anything else, plus I do my exercise s 3 times each day, but other than getting up and down to the loo, and fidgeting a lot, after, five o'clock I don't do a lot. Is that about right, ? Or may be I should do a bit more, I'm a bit clueless, anybody have an opinion?

I'm 8 weeks post TKR and not doing too badly apart from the usual sleepless nights, stiffness and ache at back of knee, etc etc but I wondered if anyone else experiences getting to about now (7pm) ish and feeling absolutely exhausted, and every part of my body hurting? I had to go to bed this afternoon and slept for an hour but still feel dodgy. Is it still my body recovering from the operation? Lord knows how I'm going to be able to go back to work in four weeks time - not gonna happen.

It's now been 20 weeks since my tkr and my ROM is still only 78 deg. I had MUA 11 weeks ago and the surgeon said it was a success and the tight band below the knee disappeared. Within days the stiffness returned. I have done all the exercises and I'm now at my wits end wondering if it will ever improve. I went for my hospital check up 2 weeks ago and the surgeon said keep trying to bend it and he would see me in 6 months! Has anyone else had this problem?

- Totally off meds now for 9 days
- can do 20 min on bike at 60-65 rpm
- Joined Gym again (intend to hit the treadmill 20min/day or so. Will see)
- Still kind of stiff and sore depending on activity (all manageable).
- Bend is at 101 (thought it might be a bit better but it is what it is)
- Extension has gotten a bit worse. 3 weeks ago it was at 6 today only 10
hmmmm. I think this is my own fault however. Have been paying more
attention to the bending and slacking off a bit on the extension. Lesson
learned.
Pay close attention to both flexion and extension. Muscles are quick to
retract if you don't keep them stretched and well exercised.
- Sleep is also improving. 4 good nights this week. 3 not so good.
- Knee is still swollen and now using both Ice and heat at times.
- Still pain on inside of knee but improving
In summary, life is returning. Progress is not as quick as I thought it would be but who is ever really properly prepared for this? I sure wasn't.
When I look back to weeks 3-5, there is miles of progress. Sure there is still some discomfort and pain but all manageable now. I remember for a time I was stuck in one spot, other times when it felt like I was going backwards.
This is sure no linear recovery. Some old pains fade while new pains crop up when you least expect. Looking back now, they are all part of the healing process. So for those in their first few weeks, don't despair, there's some nice light not to far ahead.
I realize there's still a long hard road ahead (gotta keep those exercises up) But at least now I'm confident in working towards a full recovery. Even that stubborn extension. Haha
Oh and also thank you to the folks on this forum for all your support and encouragement.

It'll be 3 weeks tomorrow that I've had my op and still get better days than others! Scar is healing well but a bit lumpy in places but I'm concerned about the pain behind my knee and occasionally when I walk unaided if I straighten my leg it starts to give way? I live out in the sticks and not yet started any physio because I have to arrange not only appt but how I'm going to get there? I am continuing with my exercises given in hospital!
im also suffering awful mood swings one minute I'm fine the next snapping at everyone because,of all the silly things, trying to do everything with one hand? I'm not sure even what sort of housework I should be avoiding or attempting at this stage?

Ok so it'll be 5 weeks tomor that I had my op and please excuse the language but I'm totally p*ssed off!!! Still not getting a good nights sleep despite amitriptyline taken before I go to bed! It's not so much the knee pain but the sciatica which seems to be getting worse not better? Went out yesterday for a mooch round the shops and had what I can only describe as a panic attack in the shopping centre was in pain from walking and felt like I was going to pass out? I'm meant to be returning to work a week tomorrow and seriously thinking I'm not ready? I only work Monday and Friday and 3 hrs alternative Saturdays so it's not too bad but still 8 hr days!! Think perhaps I should see gp this week as sick note only goes up to 12th July!

I'm wondering if someone can help me. I am 55 Yo woman who had a PKR. I'm having so many problems. I still use a cane. Terrible pain in the back of my knee. Is this normal? I've had many ortho surgeries and usually bounce back. I can't return to work because the pain is so bad.

I am now 6 weeks after surgery (TKR, right knee), and have struggled on and off with achieving a satisfactory bend since coming out of hospital. A couple of days ago I thought I had turned a corner and felt the bend was better, but now today, I'm back to square one. It is so stiff I can barely bend at all. I'm worried that my surgeon may recommend a manipulation under anaesthetic, but I'm really worried about this. Has anyone else had it done? How soon after your TKR did you have it done, and what sort of results were achieved afterwards?

I am just over 5 weeks post tkr and I am really worried about my lack of knee bend. I have had difficulties with the exercises, the knee bend ones in particular, but I try to do something every day.
I downloaded the goniometer app today to measure my knee bend (I am based in N. Ireland and we are not given access to physio after leaving hospital) if I am using the app correctly it is telling me my bend is just 41°. I am now really concerned that I may have to have a manipulation, my first hospital appointment is not until approx. 12 weeks post op. Should I contact my surgeon now or keep on going with my exercises until my appointment?

Today I am two weeks since my TKR on my right knee. I am discharged from Home Care (nurse and PT), done with blood thinner shots, have seen my surgeon, got my 29 staples OUT yesterday, and have set up my outpatient appointments for PT for next week.
In June I had my LEFT TKR done.
In a few minutes my husband and I are headed out to enjoy the beautiful fall weather here in NE Ohio along the coast.
This is the FIRST TIME in about four years that I actually am looking forward to getting outside to enjoy nice weather, a short walk, and sunshine BEING PRETTY MUCH PAIN FREE!
I am incredibly thankful to be getting my life back after so much pain for several years.
Wishing you all much happiness as you deal with recovery, surgery, and other complications.

I never expected the level of pain. I never cry but I think I have every day since my op. Can't even think that I will ever walk unaided again. I'm doing my Physio as I should, last week for 1st time went back to hospital for Physio appt, and he pushed my knee back more than I could, and especially since then it's hurts so much more. The pain seems to be more round the back and side of the knee. Is this normal? When does it get any better?
