Hypothyroidism :: Which Vitamins To Take - Ferritin And Vitamin D Low
Apr 18, 2016
So my next appointment with my endocrinologist is in 2 weeks. I need to stock up on some vitamins and wonder which brands/mixes are best for hypothyroid/hashimoto's. My ferritin, vit d are low and I'd like to take calcium/magnesium/zinc too

Hi. I was diagnosed hypothyroid about three years ago and have been on varying doses of Levothyroxine ever since. I was eventually fairly stable, (three-monthly blood tests) but then a lot of the original symptoms returned - utter fatigue and lethargy, painful and aching joints, weight gain, dry brittle hair - and palpitations on a daily basis etc etc. I went back to my GP and said I wanted to have a moan about my thyroid because I was feeling so rubbish. She sat back in her chair, said 'Moan away' and listened. At the end of my whinge, she said she wanted me to have further blood tests to check my Cortisol and Vitamin D levels. The Cortisol result was fine but she said I was quite badly deficient in Vitamin D. For those who don't know, some hypothyroid people cannot absorb enough of this Vitamin (which I believe is actually a hormone) from natural sources. So I immediately started a high dosage, six-week course of Ergocalciferol (Vit D + calcium) and within a few days I was feeling so much better. The palpitations had stopped, my joint pain was easing and the extreme fatigue too. Now, six weeks on, the doc has put me on a maintenance dose of Vit D and calcium, I am feeling so much better and my hair has even started growing again. One thing that hasn't changed is my weight but that's an issue for another day. The reason for this post is to say - if you are hypothyroid, taking levothyroxine and still feeling rubbish, consider asking your doc to have you tested for Vit D deficiency. It might not be the answer, but it's certainly worth a try.

I accumulated crazy belly fat around my upper ribs. I assume it's high cortisol because I was under a lot of stress and didn't eat a lot and lost weight. But I gained weight around my belly while losing the weight. I tried losing the belly fat, but it wouldn't budge. All I did was lose weight everywhere else. If I lose any more weight everywhere else I will be too thin. So... I tried rotated through different herbs to lower cortisol, like Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, Holy Basil. It made me have more anxiety. Then I tried Seriphos and it made me wayyyy too tired. I also took these herbs because I suffer from anxiety. I am in a vicious circle. Belly fat is stressing me out and keeping me anxious, so I take the herbs which are to help both, but I'm sensitive to them. I need to reduce the stress to lower the cortisol but the belly fat won't let me calm down. Any suggestions? Other vitamins?

I have been giving blood since March of this year. Since I am a vegetarian I regularly get a yearly blood panel to check if I am not lacking any nutrition. I noticed that since last year (September 2013) my ferritin levels have dropped from 84 g/l to 29 g/l . Should I be worried ? Is this likely to come from the blood donation or mainly from my diet?

I am hypothyroid/hashimotos. I have been experiencing significant hair loss for over a year. I'm young and female so having sparse hair is NOT ok. I've read one needs to have their ferritin at 70 or 80 to experience hair regrowth. When I first met with my naturopath and got diagnosed this year I was put on 25mcg of Levothyroxine and I told her my main concern was my hair loss. My ferritn was at 32. I was put on a daily elemental iron supplement.
A blood test a month later and I was already at 54! Two months after that i was at 68.3! I was getting close to my goal but at that test she didn't like how my iron and iron saturation went too high/out of range. So she told me to only take my iron pill ever OTHER day and lo and behold two months later my ferritin was down to 45.1. Super frustrating. I am trying to bring my iron UP! So how does this work? How can my iron and iron saturation be so high and my ferritin so low? Is it actually dangerous for me to take the pill daily if my iron saturation and iron are above the limit? I'm not going to be able to fix my hair loss and bring my ferritin up if I am only taking it every other day! HELP!

I was diagnosed with Hemochromatosis over 1 years and undertook regular blood lettings until my ferritin dropped from 700 ish to 35.
The reason I knew something was up was because I was tired, stressed and my emotions were just not what the use to be. I also felt as if I was in a constant brain fog.
However, even know with my reduced levels I don't feel great. I have undertaken some EDTA Chelation and feel great when this is done, having checked my bloods before and after - this reduces my iron, ferritin and Transferrin Saturation.
Is there a way to reduce TS to normal or near normal levels.

I was diagnosed with with B12 and Vitamin D deficiency. Both levels quite low. I have been taking my Vitamin B12 shots for three weeks now. Also I am on supplements for Vitamin D 60000 IU once a week. Most of my symptoms like tingling numbness and headache have gone. But since a few days i have been experiencing this weird feeling in my chest and entire body, the kinds when we are nervous, with palpitation while sleeping. I wake up and sit for sometime and then I seem to be fine. However, it happens again when i am about fall asleep. My GP said its anxiety and prescribed clonazepam. It did help for three days. But yesterday I tried sleeping without taking clonazepam and the same feeling of anxiety and palpitation came back. Is it a part of the vitamin D recovery process? I don't want to take clonazepam regularly. Any suggestions?

I need to get an idea of which brand of vitamins is best. I've taken many different brands and would like to get on one brand rather than get a vitamin in one brand and another vitamin in another brand. I just don't seem to be getting any satisfaction from the typical supermarket or drugstore brands. I'll list the ones I take so maybe I can get an idea of what some of you members think.
Mature Multivitamin
Vit C-1000 mg
Vit D3-2000 iu
B2-100mg
B12-2500mcg
Magnesium-500 mg
DHEA-25 mg
Fish Oil-1200mg, Omega 3-360 mg

hi everyone I'm 6 weeks post op and off to see the consultant today! Although my leg feels a lot stronger I am still unable to sleep for more than 2 hours at a time it's really a nuisance because if I could get a decent night sleep I think I'd recover quicker. I also heard or (imagined) that we should take a vitamin supplement like calcium or magnesium and vitamin D? Anyone else know anything about this? I still cannot imagine how on earth I am going to manage my commute to work...

So I've been having partial E.D and I looked up vitamins to help. I wanted to know if taking these all together were bad. If so which should I stop. Which will help. I got vitamin c 1000 mg, vitamin E 1000 IU, zinc 50 mg, magnesium, B1 250 mg, saw palmetto 900 mg and super b complex. Is that to much to do once a day?

I have been getting spots that I never used to get. My forehead is never smooth anymore, and I have small red spots on my chin. My chin is also red most of the time and its really starting to embarrass me and reduce my confidence.
I wondered if a lack of a Vitamin could be a contributing factor?

I have been getting really bad lips recently(they are normally white and not ew) not sure if its because of my medication or what not, but I have tried lip scrub and several lip balms and before I go to bed my lips look normal its only in the morning and day.
Anyway, someone told me to try taking multivitamins, I may have a vitamin issue; my issue is are they ok to take? I am talking about the Seven Seas Complete Multivitamins for Adults. I have spoken to a pharmacist and she has said they will not interfere with my current medication. Or any advice on my lips?
