Hyperthyroidism :: Selenium And Zinc For Overactive Thyroid?

May 17, 2016

This is my second time having an overactive thyroid in about 4.5 years. The first time I was totally new to it and had horrible symptoms and took a few trips to A&E for the doctors to diagnose me. This time around wasn't feeling great and said i would go get bloods done to check my thyroid, as hadnt gotten it checked in maybe 2 years! So the first time I had it I was living in a different city in Ireland so i was seeing a different Endo, which opted for Block and Replace treatment, which I found really good - was on this for 18 months and given the all clear. This time around I am seeing a different Endo who would not put me on the Block and Replace treatment, so am just on 20mg carbimazole now the last month and 10mg for a month before that. Still not feeling great, have good days and bad days, but I just remember feeling a lot better when doing the B&R. So i have started taking some supplements too, Omega 3, a multivitamin and a selenium & zinc tablet also, has anyone else ever tried the selenium and zinc that could share their experiences? Or any other supplements that has made an improvement on their health and wellbeing?

Hyperthyroidism :: Pregnant With Overactive Thyroid

I have recently been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid with no previous thyroid problems. I was tested in 2014 once with normal results.

Recently in my 8th week of being pregnant my results came back as:

TSH <0.01 (reference 0.3-4.0 mIU/L)

Free t4 25 (reference 9-23 pmol/L)

Free t3 8.4 (reference 3.5-6.5 pmol/L)

I am waiting for an endo appointment and was wondering if there was anything else that should be tested (vitamin b12, D, carnitine, antibodies) or if there was anything I could do while I wait for the appointment. I am a vegetarian and from my other tests the doctor concluded my iron is fine.

Overactive Thyroid - But Under Active Symptoms?

I am 33 years old and have just been diagnosed with having OA Thyroid, but have symptoms of UA Thyroid. I have always struggled with my weight and bloating (from having food intolerances), but have recently gained a lot more weight than normal, despite eating sensibly, walking everywhere (as I don't drive) and swimming.

I have days where I feel really thirsty and have to drink lots and lots of water, unable to concentrate, have a husky voice and morning coughing/ gunk on my chest, rapid heart rate, anxiety, feel achey and exhausted all the time. I also have Fibromyalgia (was diagnosed in 2005). I used to work full time for 17 years, but recently had to reduce my hours to part time, where I constantly felt ill...and I have now had to leave work altogether.

What I don't understand is how I can have the symptoms of UA but be OA. The Doctor has prescribed me 5mg of Carbimazole to take 3 times a day. No Propranolol yet, but I have taken these before as I used to suffer with high blood pressure.

I am worried that I am going to gain even more weight on this medication, when I have already gone up nearly two dress sizes from being so ill. Is this medication usually only given for people with OA? Will the effects be reversed in my case, where I have UA? Are there many of you out there who have the same symptoms as me and who are taking this medication and if so, what has happened in your situation?

Thyroid :: Selenium For A Month - Feeling Bit Shaky

So my doc said I was Vitamin D deficient and has put me on 5000 vitamin D3. Which is fine I've had to do that before. Then he suggested selenium which I got 200 because I couldn't find a 100 mcg of selenium. I've been on selenium for a month but I've been feeling a bit shaky. Can selenium do that? Some days I feel ok but a little nervous. My hands aren't shaky just feels like I'm shaky inside. Does that even make sense? LOL! I even started taking selenium every other day instead but I still have this feeling.

I have been diagnosed with an overactive Thyroid. My Dr started me on Neo-Mercazole but the medication was making me very shaky. I then went back to her and she put me onto Inderal 40. I am yet to see a specialist at the end of the month. I wanted to ask if I could take both tablets at once?

Thyroid Disorders :: Using Iodine, Selenium, Sea Salt And Hashimoto's

I've read recently that iodine is not necessarily bad if you have hashi's.  I found other articles that say too much iodine is the cause of many hashis  cases. Nothing better than getting feedback from those that are living with hashish. My questions are:

Should I not be using  regular iodized salt?

Will using uniodized sea salt be better than regular salt?

Do I need to be concerned at all with my salt/iodine intake as long as I'm taking 200 mg selenium now?

Are these articles about iodine mainly  referring to iodine supplements and not what a person consumes through diet?

I understand hypothyroidism is not necessarily hashimoto's thyroiditis but quite frankly, my head is spinning right now. I don't want to aggravate my hashi's  but on the other hand, maybe I'm overly concerned.  BTW, I am currently not taking any thyroid medicine.  Other than having difficulty losing weight.

Hyperthyroidism :: During Pregnancy Graves Disease And Thyroid Eye Disease

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice regarding diagnosing graves and thyroid eye disease in pregnancy. Having never had any problems until being pregnant I'm very confused as to why I've suddenly got it? At around 12 weeks into my pregnancy I noticed a change in my eyes (one was protruding), after seeing an eye dr, he advised I'd be tested for hyperthyroidism and following his advice the bloods came back as a positive for hyperthyroidism. I was put on PTU by an endocrinologist for the rest of my pregnancy  and at week 39 I noticed a yellowing in the White of my eyes and admitted myself to the maternity unit for blood tests following speaking with a midwife. It turned out I had developed severe jaundice (Which I now have learnt through research to be a severe side effect to PTU) and that my liver was failing; I had to have an emergency c section that night. I am pleased to say I have a had a healthy baby boy but I'm so anxious as to whether these conditions will worsen post pregnancy.

Nasty Taste In My Mouth - Less Zinc? Menopause?

Approx 6 months ago I developed a nasty salty taste in my mouth which seems to emanate from my tongue, I think, I have been to the dentist, no problems there, I have been to the doctor, had blood tests to eliminate anything more sinister, bloods came back fine so what is causing this. I did read somewhere that when going through the menopause, which I am, can cause a lot of things to change in your body, could this be one of them. Also I was told that it could be a sign of not enough Zinc in my system. I would love to hear from anyone else who may have encountered this problem. It doesn't make me feel ill so I do feel a bit of a fraud but it is the most irritating sensation and at its worse it is a real stinging sensation on my tongue.

Copper And Zinc To Reverse Gray Hair?

Does anyone have experience with Copper and Zinc to reverse gray hair? I am 26 years old and there are some noticeable gray hairs in my head and facial hair. I have read these reports before. I am a 28 year old male, and as of October 30, 2010, I began taking 2 mg copper with 50 mg zinc to reverse my gray hair. I have about 20+ gray hairs in my head.

If anyone has had good experience with copper and zinc to reverse gray hair, how long before I see the reversal of gray back to my darker hair?

Vitamin D And Zinc Deficiency Due To PPIs (causing Low Stomach Acid)

I have been on Protonix (proton pump inhibitor) for well over 25 yrs. Four years ago I developed constant diarrhea that was later diagnosed as gallbladder problems and had it removed per Dr's orders. The diarrhea continued afterwards though and the Dr said it was now IBS-D. It just seems like they are guessing as I go along here. I did some research and found that constant use of PPI's can cause LOW acid in the stomach and therefore increasing malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, also causing severe diarrhea. I believe this has been my problem all along considering I was just found to be deficient in Zinc & D. Diarrhea, hair falling out, uncontrolled blood sugars and now hypothyroidism are my symptoms. I have so many questions. Has anyone had this problem with PPI's? Has anyone tried to stop? I know it's very hard to do. I'm told having low acid in the gut, even though you supplement, doesn't work to increase your minerals/vitamins. Just looking for answers and feeling like crap.

UTI :: Overactive Bladder And Occasional Urge Incontinence

I am 50, male, and I have been poorly for a few weeks following a severe UTI, although I feel much better now than I was. Without going into the whole story, the pain I had was so sudden and severe that I had to be taken to A&E in an ambulance. I wondered if I had kidney stones, but I've now had a follow-up ultrasound scan of my kidneys and abdomen and this was clear. Had already had PSA blood test back in June which was also OK, so I don't think it is my prostate. I have no idea how the infection occurred and it is seems as if it was just one of those things.

I do have overactive bladder and occasional urge incontinence but I have never had a UTI before.

Other pre-existing conditions are high blood pressure, overweight and high cholesterol, also history of peptic ulcers and duodenitis,  as well as mental health issues, but nothing you would think would cause this specific condition.

I just wondered if anyone out there reading this post have had something similar or can help. I know UTIs are rare in men & I don't think I've quite got to the bottom of things yet. Has anyone else had any other tests other than ultrasound, and I wondered if they revealed anything more?

Vitamins / Supplements :: Hashimoto's And Selenium

I've been struggling with my Hashimoto's diagnosis. I am actually "alright" at this present moment, but it was a long and rocky road. My Endo is not very informative at all and does not answer my questions. Last time I asked her about taking supplements. She stated she is biased because she practices Western medicine and won't comment on whether or not she thinks it's a good idea to take supplements.

I decided a little over a year ago, to take 200 mg Selenium as an added supplement, because I've been reading on here, that it will help with getting the antibodies down and I must say, I can tell a difference in how I feel today from before.

Now here is where I'm confused: my best friend since Kindergarten got diagnosed with Hashi's last year. She's really been having a hard time with it. Last time she saw her Endo, she asked the Selenium question. Her Endo said don't take it, because your risk of developing diabetes increases! That's something I've never heard about. So all day today I've been reading and researching this and I'm reading either it's so good to take when you have Hashi's and then some study they did that confirms my friends' Drs' point about the increased diabetes risk. Any thoughts?
