View 3 RepliesI have been giving blood since March of this year. Since I am a vegetarian I regularly get a yearly blood panel to check if I am not lacking any nutrition. I noticed that since last year (September 2013) my ferritin levels have dropped from 84 g/l to 29 g/l . Should I be worried ? Is this likely to come from the blood donation or mainly from my diet?
View 1 RepliesI am on 20 mg lisinopril and 12.3 diuretic. I have to start flying a lot, I am terrified because my pressure is never stable and spikes like crazy even under slightly stressful circumstances.
I read that flying increases blood pressure and puts some at a risk for clots and pulmonary embolism. What should I do?
I have only recently started having the B12 injections. Does anyone know if you can still give blood? I used to be a regular donor but now I'm not sure if I can still give?
View 2 RepliesI have been diagnosed with type II diabetes 4 years ago. I currently take Glucophage and insulin, since I had 2 episodes whereby my suggests skyrocketed and had to go to the emergency. I am in the business world and have periods of intense stress, which I tend to ‘’fight’’ with yoga and increased exercise. I understand that both psychological stress and exercise increase adrenaline surge and adrenaline decreases the effectiveness of insulin. Thus, should I increase my insulin dose? Anyone has some experience?
View 1 RepliesI just tested positive for gonorrhea in my throat. The test came out negative for all other STDs.
I had oral sex last week with a guy (I gave him a blowjob). If the gonorrhea was already there from a previous sexual contact, did that increase my risk for HIV when I gave that guy a blowjob (without having had semen in my mouth)?
If the organ receiver is vaccinated, then is it possible to transplant from hbv sufferer's body?
View 9 RepliesOkay, so a little over 4 months ago, I donated my left kidney. For the past month, I've been having a slight pressure (not quite pain) in my right lower back area, where my one kidney is. I just had a checkup a few days ago with urine and blood tests, and I have seen the results. There is no indication that anything is wrong though. Maybe they missed something? I forgot to mention this to the kidney doctor during my appointment though.
View 1 RepliesI donated platelets back in March and I just got a letter in the mail the other day saying that I am no longer eligible to donate blood because I tested reactive to the anti HIV 1/2 test, but tested negative on their confirmatory test (they didn't specify what their "confirmatory" test was)
I have never had a blood transfusion, never used IV drugs, and my one and only sexual partner is my long term boyfriend (we have been together for over 7 years, always wear condoms, and we were each other's first partners). I live in the US.
I do have piercings, the oldest one I got in 2010, and I gave blood after receiving it without a problem. I also had my wisdom teeth extracted last March and I did get a flu shot in September (6 months before the donation)
At the time of donation I was sick, I had a bit of a head cold but I was on my way to recovery (but still sick..)
Could the fact that I had a head cold (stuffy/runny nose, sore throat, cough, fatigue) during the time I was donating cause a false positive?
I had an accident at work October 2004 (head injury), I complained of hissing in my ears and my hearing was hypersensitive, I had a hearing test at NHS audiology, I was issued with noise generators. I also complained of jaw ache pain, so I visited my Dentist, he had taken an x-ray that shown no problems with teeth. May 2005 after many minor accidents I was referred for neurological examinations and MRI scans. I was diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome. Tinnitus and Hyperacusis, I have complained from day one, that my Tinnitus gets louder when I turn my head, it sounds as though it’s from my ears! But I have realised that when I have been talking in a crowded room for a long time this is more prominent. I can live with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis that seems to be in my head due to Neuro rehab CBT, and Tinnitus therapy, could it be I am temporally damaging my jaw cartilage or muscles through raising my voice, I feel discomfort and fullness of ears, the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis that then radiates from my ears lasts for hours or a couple days, but aggravates the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis that seems to be in my head, this is when I am accident prone. I am 58 and my occupation is lorry driver. I feel that when I explain this to the medical profession that they do not listen. My dentist suggested trigeminal nerve, cartilage, TMJD, I have lived with this condition for 4 and half years but would prefer a better quality of life. I would be very grateful for any information.

Has anyone heard that HRT increases SS symptoms? I'm on a HRT in the form of a low dose patch. I've been experiencing dry/irritated eyes and read that HRT can make your eyes dryer in addition to the other risks associated w/SS.

View 1 RepliesI was on diltiazem (cartia) for several years. It eventually raised my blood sugar level and I was diagnosed with diabetes 2. My blood pressure was not going down, so they took me off diltiazem 240mg, and put me on lisinopril 5mg.
The lisinopril gave me a dry cough, so I was put on losartan 25mg. I asked why not 5 mg and my NP told me because it doesn't come in 5mg....
I had this stool with bright red blood yesterday and today. I couldn't tell how much blood there is but the water became bright red with 50% visibility (I looked at the stool ). I don't feel any pain and I feel nothing at all on my body. The day before I had the stool with blood, I drank four cups of green tea. I know tea is acidic but I am not sure if this is the cause of it. My urine is fine and without blood.
View 1 RepliesI gave blood mid January 2014 after registering some high blood pressure readings ( systolic up around 155) and reading saga study results suggesting benefit. I had previously tried reducing this through more exercise, and eating more healthily. Initially after giving blood the systolic remained elevated at 160. However it later reduced to 135. Three months later my BP is around 88/138 - so still a little on the high side, but still much reduced from the elevated levels previously.
Also taking CoQ10, but not eating a very good diet.
Anyway - just for those who are interested giving blood (especially for men who drink too much), can help.

View 1 RepliesWeekly blood removal was ordered by my hematologist. Being needle phobic I knew it wasn't going to be fun. Since being misdiagnosed since 2007 my iron levels were greatly increased. After going for my first blood removal, I was concerned since after trying both arms, they were unable to get the 500 ml due to the thickness of the blood and the small veins, I believe they were only able to get 50 ml Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone have any recommendations on how to get more blood out?
