Gabapentin Causing Chronic Pain - While Taking Or Withdrawal
Feb 29, 2016
Any experience with gabapentin causing chronic pain problems when taking or withdrawing? During my taper I developed major issues with sciatica and my hip. I'm also taking forever to heal from a frozen shoulder injury (14 months). I had preexisting issues. My guess is it's from all the couch time necessary to heal. But it feels like it shouldn't be this bad. I'm only 29

So I had back surgery in July. I had used gabapentin the 3 years prior. Max dose 1200 mgs. My PM doc told me to take 3 months to get off of it. Seizure risk and all. I am now down to 400mgs a day. I have tried a few methods....right now pushing each dose out more time. So basically in withdrawal all the time. Hopefully someone can tell me a better way.
Years ago when I quit using Xanax to sleep I would make a cut, then hold. Wasn't painless but this is hideous.
Mentally I am strong no addiction issues. Just rather not be sick all the time.

I noticed in some other threads that some people have nerve pain and are taking gabapentin. I have nerve pain around my vulva and vaginal opening. I have been given gabapentin. I presume it is some sort of post herpetic neuropathy....

Was on Gabapentin for a year and worked up to 3200 mgs a day. Was taking it for Osteo Arthritis in feet and knees. Didn't do much for pain so decided to get off of it. My Dr said to take 1600 mgs for 5 days the drop to 800 mgs for 5 days! This was 3 weeks ago still fighting withdrawal. It's eased up some but still have some anxiety and like pressure in my chest. Almost makes me feel short winded at times. Has anyone else had this and how long will the withdrawal last? Have heard the longer you was on it the longer it takes. Tired of it just want to feel normal again.

I am 41 years old and was diagnosed with Syringomyelia and Intramedullary ependymoma tumors about 2 years ago. I have suffered extreme nerve pain since the biopsy of my main tumor at C7, to the point that I couldn't stand having a shower or my child touching me:yikes:because of the pain! Also increased neurological pain in the whole of my body.
I say thank God for Gabapentin... I take 1800 mg a day which enables me to function better than I would if I didn't take the drug. I get tired so I rest (I can not put this solely down to Gabapentin because my illness also has this effect). The only side effect I have noticed is 'claustrophobia' particularly in the MRI machine I never had it before I started taking Gabapentin ....
I always say 'If I could only choose one drug' Gabapentin would be it every time even before my pain killers.

Was on 600mg Gabapentin 3 times a day for peripheral neuropathy to little effect. Was prescribed Amitriptyline, took 25mg for 3 days then 50mg for 5 days - replacing the 2 Gabapentin at night. Reduced Amitriptyline to 25mg after awful side effects. Took for 2 days with 300mg at night (in addition to the 600mg in morning and new GP said stop Amitriptyline and increase morning dose to 900 mg. Was OK for a while, but then feet and lower legs started severe pins and needles, difficult to walk. Disturbed sleep last night and feet and legs still bad. Is this withdrawal from Amitriptyline? How long will it last? GP rang and said gradually increase Gabapentin to 900 mg 3 times a day and if necessary go to 1200 mg 3 times a day. Any suggestions? Will this gradually get better?

I have been recently told that the law has changed regarding Gabapentin and that I should not drive whilst taking it as insurance companies are nullifying policies for those involved in an accident whilst being prescribed Gabapentin.
I'm told Gabapentin has recently been reclassified along with others similar drugs that may cause drowsiness or affect eyesight, Tramadol, and Amitriptyline to name but two.
Can anyone confirm these changes as driving my motorhome around the UK and Europe is the only pleasure I have left.

I am 20 years old and have suffered with migraines for a few years! I had my worst one a few months back which resulted in me being physically sick a number of times! Anyway I went to my GP as I was worried because my Mum suffered with migraines and she died from a massive stroke when she was only 33, so I was worried, as was my Doctor! So she referred me to a neurologist at Guys Hospital in London and he doesn't seem to think it is related what happened to my Mother but he wants me to have an MRI just to see if anything shows up! Anyway he has put me on Gabapentin as I am diabetic and he didn't know what else to put me on! ...3 a day for a week and then 6 a day for a week and then 9 a day for 6 months! I took my first lot on Saturday and it gave me such a terrible migraine similar to the one I had a few months when I was sick but this time I wasn't physically sick....luckily! I seem to be okay now though!
Anyway, is anyone else taking this?

Does this help? If so what is your dosage?

I have now fully weaned off of Gabapentin. After several months of constant right arm pain - mostly in my deltoid - I now only have intermittent pain episodes. However, my hand and neck sensations of being swollen have returned to about 50% of their worst. My right hand dexterity has definitely declined again.
I also have to note that I've been on vacation from my desk job for a week - so maybe it was all the computer work putting the strain on my arm? I have had to learn to mouse with my left hand, so at least I minimized that strain from my right.
Anyone else go off Gabapentin and have unexpected results? How long until it is fully out of your system?

I had TLIF spinal surgery in 2010. Went as well as could be expected, but I have a very weak back and live with constant pain. I body won't accept strong painkillers, so was prescribed Amitriptyline. Came off them due to nose bleeds and feeling like a complete zombie. Although it was good to get a good night sleep!!! Doc then put me on Gabapentin 300 mg 3 times a day. Had no pain relief and so doc has now upped me to 600 mg 3 times a day, plus zapain in between.
I worry about taking so much, but I need something to take the edge off my pain. I've read a lot of negative reviews about Gabapentin. Will have to see how I get on.

you state that if taking antacids you should leave at least 2 hrs after taking Gabapentin before taking antacids.
On my Gabapentin leaflet it states that Gabapentin is to to be taken at the earliest two hours after taking an antacid.
Who do I believe? I shall have to consult my chemist?

My family member said she has a drug called gabapentin and said maybe it would help me thru the tough part of my wd. As its a med for nerve pain. The worst is the crawly skin for me..anyone had any experience. I don't want to take something that is going to minimize the pain then once I stop taking that it come on stronger than before. As I've heard with people taking tramadol for wd.

My doctor just put me on this today, to help me sleep...I haven't taken it yet, as I get scared with taking new meds. Should I take this medicine? Is there major withdrawals, if I forget? And does it actually work? What symptoms r most common? Sorry for so many questions...I'm just a worry wart. I already went through withdrawal symptoms a few months back, b/c I quit Effexor slowly, and switch chef over to Wellbutrin. I had shocks, shakiness, panic, etc...it was scary...and I don't want to start a new med that's going to do the same thing...so can someone please help me? Thanks.

On top of everything else, it would appear as though I'm having issues with my TMJ...I believe I'm a jaw clencher when I'm anxious (which is pretty much always), and I'm also a sloucher at my desk, and this has caused the muscles in my neck to become VERY tense....could this tension be causing my headaches as well? And what about the persistent off-balance feeling that I seem to have whenever the tension strikes? My head just feels so heavy...as though my poor neck can barely support it. I had a massage last night and the therapist was astonished at how tight my muscles were, especially on the sides of my neck, behind my ears, and in my shoulders....all related? Does anyone else experience this? The pain is pretty intense and over-the-counter pain relievers (like Advil) don't do a thing for it.

I just started reading about this and it really sounds like I may have this but I'm not sure. I have headaches sometimes that are awful and seem to start from my neck and back of my head. I see a chiropractor once a month and my x rays showed problems in c5 and c6 in my neck. I also have notalgia paresthetica which itches me too death sometimes in my right back shoulder. We figure it's caused from the c5 and c6 in my neck. I never sleep all through the night, always tossing and turning. And I feel fatigued ALL the time no matter how much rest I get. I had a blood test and my vitamin D is low. I can find "knots" on my back, usually I can find about 5 or 6 of them, even on my sides. I work a very physical and mentally stressful job and this causes me a lot of pain. When I am working usually mid day I will get a horrible sharp pain somewhere in my back and it just stops me. It's like someone taking a hot knife and stabbing me with it. It's hard for me to straighten myself up. My pain is in my mid and upper back, rarely ever in my lower back. I do get dizzy sometimes also and feel off balanced.

I know we're all different but due to neck/shoulder/arm/face pain with radiating pain to my arms at times I was previously prescribed pregabalin, that gave me heart palps and rls, now tried gabapentin and I think I had some sort of adverse reaction to it as my side effects were quite severe so I'm wondering where to go from here re meds. I've tried amitriptyline but not for long however the short time I took it it did nothing. Was thinking of trying nortriptyline as an alternative as read side effects not so bad.
Does anyone have any experience with Any of these 4 drugs or an alternative and if you've tried nortriptyline how well it did work vs it's side effects.
Or if anyone has found a miracle drug please let me know. I think key for me is muscle relaxation and nerve burning reduction.
