GERD :: Choking And Throat Spasm
May 23, 2016
Ok. 6 yrs ago I was diagnosed with erosive gastritis/mild esophagitis. I had a recent endoscopy which showed almost normal . Anyhow, a few months ago I was sleeping one night and i was awaken violently with the sensation something was choking my throat like a spasm I swallowed hard and the spasm went away . Any thoughts as to what that episode was??

I have been suffering with this for two weeks and I have no idea which symptoms may be connected to my newly acquired TMJ or my flare up of GERD.
Two weeks ago after a heavy meal and a few days after damaging my jaw I woke up in the night with a weird throat spasm and feeling like I had something stuck in my throat. Then over the weeks I started to get the lump feeling through the day with difficulty swallowing. I lost half a stone due to being unable to eat.
Now I have developed a tight chest, dry throat and lungs, feeling like my lungs are blocked, constant throat clearing with little mucous production, breathing difficulty and I'm still having these nightly throat spasms and lump feeling. I had some of my sons ventolin inhaler as I had asthma as a child and thought the reflux could be causing this but it did nothing.
I have been to A and E lots of times with it and also to my GP who has referred me for an endoscopy but its only in february.
I am going out of my mind. The breathing issue happened after a load of acid came up my throat a few nights ago and it felt like my throat and lungs were dried out by it.

I have suspected bilateral diaphragm paralysis and increasing difficulties breathing and swallow king. Weak and short breath on inspiration and expiration and barely sleeping. Are there any exercises can be done at this late stage as now have impending feeling of doom. Have been told intervention is pointless.

My symptoms are very sharp chest and back pain often also going around the ribs and they do feel like a heart attack. The only thing that relieves them is if I can make myself burp over and over to release the contraction. It seems what brings mine on is positional in nature - bending forward, even slightly or waking in the middle of the night with an attack, probably from bending forward in the fetal position without awareness. I was given nitroglycerin, which helps some but I wonder if anyone has found other things that work that do not involve drugs. I read somewhere that peppermint oil in a little water works but when I'm in the middle of one of these severe attacks I do not have the wherewithal to go get peppermint water. They feel that dire in nature, like it has to be relieved immediately! Again, only the burping regime has helped but not so great to have to do when out in public.

Inside my throat it feels like its being pinched or squeezed and making me feel that I will choke and not be able to catch my breath. And when i was little i had surgery for an cyst when I Tomorrow I'm going to the doctors or the ER.

So this past Friday night (2 days ago), I was hanging out with a friend and we were having some drinks and having an all around great time. So at one point, my friend did something funny and it made me laugh so hard, that I started choking on the drink I was drinking (which was carbonated and alcoholic). It was actually so bad that I couldn't stop coughing and the drink actually came out of my nose. It took a little while to calm down, but finally I got situated and everything was fine. Well this morning, I woke up with a bad sore throat on the right side of my throat and my tonsils are very big and inflamed. It is the side that was affected the most when I was choking (and the side of my nose that the drink came out of), but I just wanted to make sure that it is normal to have a sore throat after choking on a drink as I can't find anything related to it. That same night, after the choking episode, my throat on that side was a little tender and it felt weird swallowing on the right side, but it wasn't as sore and inflamed as it is today.

Lately I've been having a choking feeling, I'm pretty sure it's a normal feeling of anxiety but it is sure annoying. Feels kinda like my throat is closing too, then I start feeling like I can't breathe. Typical anxiety attack now. I've gotten myself into having one every night now because I was so terrified of the one I had the other night. It sucks that I get them before bed because I'm so tired but can't sleep with the choking feeling

I am a 40 yr old male who has been dealing with a choking issue for some time now. What happens is when I lay down to sleep I will wake up a short time later feeling like there is a lump of junk in the back of my throat that I can't cough up. I ended up in the hospital the first time it happened and they ran x rays and checked me out and said they couldn't find anything wrong other than my throat is narrow and seemed irritated. We later found out we had mold in our home and moved out as my entire family was affected by it but now the problem is back and it's only happening to me and not my family. I've tried benedryl to see if it was allergy related and it didn't help,. Sometimes it will start with me just sitting in a chair and not sleeping(watching tv). Its a feeling of needing to cough up something that just isn't there but my air way feels obstructed. When it happens if I suck on a mint or a candy after about an hour it will relieve itself but if I lay down it starts up again. Anyone dealt with this or dealing with something like this?

Its been two scary months with a really bad cough. I went to the ER after the first month and they said it was a virus, a week later went to urgent care and they gave me antibiotics for bacterial infection, two weeks later got worse went to urgent care got a steroids shot and asthma treatment went home with steroids, albuterol and continue to lose oxygen when coughing randomly. I am very scared because it happens any time while sitting, talking, eating, sleeping and I think I'm going to stop breathing each time. My eyes turn shot red and I get like headed with a desperate sound of getting my breath like if I was being choked. I just went to the ER after a scary episode and both my lung and throat x-ray came back normal. Has anybody dealt with anything similar to this? If so please help. I will call an ear, nose, and throat specialist tomorrow. I also feel an acidic flavor and fleming sitting on my throat All the time.

When I get sore throat, a sensation of something is swollen on my throat, and it is painful when I pass saliva, I gargle with drinking water 10 times or more. That soften the very sticky mucus on my throat, and after that I can spit it out, and NO MORE PAIN!

I am a 27 year old male who had this problem for 4 years already.
One day I got sick and suddenly when I healed I couldn't swallow. I always felt something in the throat all the time, like mucus or phlegm and always needed to spit it out. I also feel a burning feeling on the right side of my throat and constantly feel like coughing. Years later I began to feel a pain in the right side chest.
I am using ppis but they're not working at all. I don't think I have real reflux, no heartburn or any other symptom...

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to soothe/heal a sore throat from acid reflux?

I have had a chronic sore throat for 5 months now. Initially thought it was strep, but test came back negative. Was tested for allergies, negative. Have had 3 ENTs scope my throat and all say it looks completely normal. Have been to two GIs who weren't particularly helpful, though one prescribed Nortriptyline thinking it might be a sensory neuropathy -- have been taking it for 2.5 months with no help (was at 20mg and ENT had me start raising by 10mg per week...now at 30mg, and tomorrow will begin 40mg). Was at the ER twice -- CT scan normal, blood tests normal. I have also restricted my diet to the Kaufman diet to little avail. After I eat I do notice that I'm a little "burpy" and can taste bile sometimes, which makes me think LPR (though the ENTs say there's no sign of it in the scopes). I also have an occasional chest pain that I think is an esophageal spasm, again making me think LPR/GERD. I was on PPIs for about ten years and slowly weaned myself off after a few months of this since they didn't seem to be helping. Have been off the PPIs for over a month ago...now taking H2s (40mg Pepcid 2 x day) . Oh, and I've also tried DGL..not much help.
So I'm stumped, and so are my docs. I really like and trust my current ENT, and he is genuinely trying to help. After a few more weeks of increasing the nortriptyline he is going to refer me for the acid testing where they put the probes in your throat.
So, does anyone have any brilliant thoughts on what might be going on? The pain is significant (some days are worse than others), and it feels particularly bad after giving presentations, which I do frequently. I can't stand the thought of this lasting a whole lot longer, and at this point worry that it could be something more serious.

I have a couple of points I'd like to ask about here and any advice or pointers will be appreciated. The first thing is that my throat seemed swollen or narrowed in some way. It's completely painless, but I know at the same time that it's not normal, and my throat wasn't like this before. Swallowing even tiny vitamin supplements is unpleasant so I just chew them, because otherwise I have to force them down with lots of water. I've had tiny tablets get stuck in my throat before and I gag on them. I don't know why this is such a struggle for me when I see other people swallowing giant capsules with ease. With other foods it is creating other symptoms. For example, I just ate soup, but immediately afterwards I can feel soup in my throat that hasn't gone down. I brought it back up like phlegm, and pretty much a teaspoon full of pure soup came back up, a good minute or two after it was swallowed. Shouldn't that soup be long gone down toward my stomach by then?
Another feeling I get is this "bubbling" feeling in my throat and the middle of my chest accompanying the food not going down. A lot of air is coming back up whenever I eat, and I find myself belching constantly. A lot of the "bubbling" sensations I guesstimate are air coming back up and looking for a way around the food coming down. What can be done about all this trapped wind? Sometimes standing up causes it to rise up my chest through my neck and out my mouth. I can feel it traveling all the way up and it's a weird sensation. Throughout the day I'm almost constantly working air out of my chest and in to a burp.
I experience no real pain, or even burning / heart burn most of the time. Things just seem to come up a lot, whether it be air, food and very rarely, acid. Even on the rare occasions that I get "acid reflux" with acid in my throat, the first I know of it is when it hits the back of my mouth. Is that unusual? Shouldn't I feel "heart burn" or other symptoms first if it has managed to come up that far? I struggle to lay down after a meal because the food sits there in my neck and refuses to budge. It's starting to affect my quality of life because I'm having to carefully plan how/when/what I eat , when I lay down, how I lay down etc.

I am having burning throat and stomach... I have had a barium swallow and when the machine tipped me on my back, the contents of my stomach go up into my esophagus. I had a scope which said the ph in my stomach wasn't horrible and then a ph monitor in my throat which showed that the ph in my throat isn't bad until I lay down at night. My doctor also said my lower esophageal stayed open during the entire procedure and and he thinks it doesn't close at all anymore. My throat hurts everyday. I am supposed to take 40mg of omeprazole twice a day but I know long term it's bad for you. I am looking at nissen fundoplication but am afraid because it's serious and requires a long recovery. I am nervous as I heard you can never vomit again and I do ge nauseated even just on a ride in the car. Anyone had good results with surgery or anything else ?

I'm not entirely sure whats going on with my body any more..
(Diagnosed with gerd, gastritis and hiatal hernia after endoscopy a year and a half ago)
I've changed my diet completely. Sleep raised in bed. Do light exercise 5 days a week.. basically before someone suggests these sorts of things I have tried everything that I know of.
I've been on pantoprazole for a year and was on omeprazole for 5 months prior. Completely changed my diet. Haven't touched alcohol nor a cigarette in 18 months. I don't eat anything deep fried.. No onions no tomato absolutely nothing spicy. Actually pretty much all I can eat is bread, potato and some veg and some fruit. I can barely eat meat any more either. Anything I eat burns my stomach when it goes down, my stomach burns for hours after.. then I get that infamous 'gnawing pain' which wont go away until I eat.
Anyway, about 6 months ago 2 of my teeth crumbled away, I've only had the fillings in for about 5 months and they are both brown and stink.. Im sure its due to reflux.. My gums bleed every time I brush my teeth, no matter how soft the toothbrush is. They even bleed when I eat food.
A couple of nights ago my throat became inflamed, it burns even when drinking water. It feels like there is pressure in my throat near the top of it. It hurts to swallow.. my tongue is coated with yellow stuff. My mouth is dry. My breath absolutely stinks and has done for months, even before the teeth incident.
I'm always nauseous. Some weeks I'm only getting about 10 hours sleep over the entire 7 days because all these symptoms keep me up. My gp is at a loss.. they don't really listen to me anyway. My consultant at the hospital makes me wait a whole year for my next appointment, thats after the last one had to be brought forward by my gp calling him and telling him it was urgent.. He saw me for 5 minutes, said I had reflux.. gave me some anti sickness then asked me to leave. I'd already been diagnosed with reflux and given anti sickness by my gp?
Guys, I'm only 20 years old.. I'm 20! I was never ill before this and now my entire life has been turned upside down by something my doctors seem to think is 'simple'.
It's past the point of affecting my 'quality of life'.. it has literally taken my life away. I can't do anything anymore. I'm always in pain, feel sick or am being sick.
If you got this far down and managed to put up with all my moaning then thank you,
If anyone has any idea what is going on with me then please feel free to comment..
Also, if there is mistakes in here or it doesn't make sense in parts, I've had 1 hour sleep in 48 hours so I'm not at my grammatical best right now!

Although my throat spasms have now stopped I have started to have problems with my larynx.
Mucous seems to be trapped underneath it and collects at night. I wake up with a swollen larynx but no pain. Now my lymph nodes in my neck and the back of my head have swelled.
I also wake up every morning feeling unrefreshed, groggy and depressed.
I am still unable to swallow food.
Surely this can't be GERD?

Before I rush to a doctor and look like a hypochondriac I thought I'd shoot a question here:
I woke up this morning and I have been coughing/gagging all morning and can taste blood in the back of my throat, I have not coughed up any blood though.
I have been trying to quit smoking since 2011 and have been a smoker since 1991.
I am also on SR Hydromorphone (Jurnista) for severe chronic back pain.
I am also on 800 Mg Carbamazepine (as a Mood stabilizer NOT for Epilepsy)
As well as Mirtazapine (for chronic Clinical Depression)
And Atenolol for mild Hypertension.
Anyhoo, as of this morning I have been hacking up a storm, as of 2 hours from waking up I developed a sore throat (I believe from the hard coughing) I have not coughed anything up but the coughing gets so hard it becomes dry-reaching frequently.
And that taste of blood waay down in the back of my throat is ever present after each cough.
As I have depression and mood disorder, I don't want to go straight to the doc as quite often individuals with mental health issues don't get taken seriously here in Australia, quite often I would get told "Go to your psychiatrist" as if I am crazy. and in the past I ended up in trouble with serious health issues that went undiagnosed simply because some peanut G.P. thought it was all in my head, until I ended up in hospital sometimes in quite serious condition.
So I was wondering if someone who understands this coughing issue could be could shoot me an answer first.
I am meant to go to University tomorrow (I am studying for a Psychology Degree) and I want to be at my peak for study if at all possible.

I have had this problem since November of 2006. I have tried just about EVERYTHING otc all nasal sprays, all antihistamines, zyrtec, mucinex, allegra even the ones you have to show your I'D,neti pot, etc. I have even tried candida and other natural remedies like apple cider and such.I have to constantly clear my throat. I have this thick stringy sticky mucous I'm always hacking up. It seems worse after I eat, exercise, laugh. Also in the morning for the first 2 hours I'm up it's worse. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I'm drowning in mucous. This irritates all people around me. I've had surgery for my adenoids and deviated septum, before that surgery I could not clear the mucous out, this helped to atleast be able to hack it out. I need someone to be my angel and tell me you have had this same problem and you know the answers since no doctor can help. I feel this is going to be the death of me. I hope I'm not clearing a hole in my throat from doing it so much.

For GCA, I just dropped from 40 to 30 msg of prednisone. Suddenly I thought I was having a heart attack. The righting pain on chest and back would not let up. We were told to go to the ER where after a second hour and medical help while hooked up to who knows, the pain began to ease. I am now on antacids and tums. Eileen, I think I dropped too many mgs. I love the super go slowly taper, no more than 10% drop. Now I have to convince my rheumy. Has anyone else had severe spasms? I did not know what was happening .
