Pregnancy :: Weight Gain On Insulin Pump - Diabetes Type 1

I am about 34 weeks pregnant and type 1 diabetic.  I am wearing an insulin pump for insulin therapy while I am pregnant.  So I have a question.  I am concerned about insulin therapy by pump. I heard that patients gain a lot of weight on a pump.  I do not want to get any fatter than I am.  What can I do to prevent getting fat?  I walk up and down the street but since it has gotten cold, I don't do that anymore.

Diabetes :: Type 1 & Type 2 - Insulin And Metformin?

So I am a type 1 diabetic where I take insulin injectables for my insulin needs.  I have taken shots for as long as I remember, well now I am 15 years old and my mom is diabetic.  I see that she takes pills for her diabetes.  She says she is type 2 diabetic.  I want to know why she can take pills and I have to take shots?  She is on Metformin so I would like to forego the shots and take the pills.

I would like the effects of the Metformin so I know how it would help me with my diabetes.  I want to start on it as soon as I can.  I would be able to go places without having to take a shot all the time.  I need to go to somewhere private and leave my friends when I do my shot.

With the medication I don't have to do that.  Does anyone know about Metformin and can tell me about the side effects and stuff?

Diabetes :: Insulin Pump - Injection Sites Are Sore

I have been diagnosed type one diabetic for three and a half years, since being on insulin my hab1c has always been in range and my consultant would really like me to be on an insulin pump. I am coming round to the idea as my injection sites are sore, I am put off by the visibility aspect, I know it may seem vain but I like the idea that by looking at me you wouldn't be able to tell but in a dress with a pump you would.

Metformin In Type 1 Diabetes? Along With Insulin?

I’m a type 1 diabetic and have been since I was 10. I got it after I’d had a virus so have been using and injecting different insulins since then. But recently my doctor has suggested that I start taking metformin cos I’ve had a few problems keeping my bloods okay over the past few months. I thought you didn’t need metformin if you were a type 1 diabetic – I thought it was just for type 2’s?

Diabetes Type 1 And SR Metformin Along With Insulin?

I have a doctor who wants me to take SR Metformin . I am a type 1 diabetic and I already take insulin.  When I was 6 I developed it.  I have taken shots since then.  Now that I am 25 my doctor wants to see of Metformin will help me.  I am a bit overweight and not skinny like I was in childhood.  He thinks I will benefit from this pill.  What do u all think?  Is it a good idea to be on a pill along with the insulin I take?  I don't know if anyone else who is type 1 does this too.  It would be nice to know if I can be ok on both.  What is SR?  I have heard of Metformin but never with the SR in its name.  I hope someone knows about this.  I have a friend in Maine that has type 1 but doesn't need any pills to go along with his insulin.

Diabetes Type 2 :: Insulin Sensitivity And Resistance

AM I INSULIN RESISTANT OR NOT?

I have symptoms of Type 2 and insulin resistance, including reactive hypoglycemia (RHG) as shown by the lab results below. I also have poor lipid values (bad LDL/HDL), low SHBG and a resulting testosterone deficiency that started in my teens. Both my mom and sister have PCOS.
2 hour OGTT results:

Fasting glucose, insulin: 79 mg/dL, 2.5 uIU/mL

75 g glucose, then (glucose, insulin):

+0:30: 116 mg/dL, 35.0 uIU/mL
+1:00: 83 mg/dL, 17.5 uIU/mL
+2:00: 56 mg/dL, 6.4 uIU/mL

A1c: 5.2% (weird, if my blood sugar is so "normal")

* highlighted = out of lab range

My insulin looks very low. Are these low numbers for insulin? If so, why would I get RHG from insulin so low?

Diabetes Type 1 And Metformin Or Insulin - What's The Difference?

I am a 18 year old and I have been a type 1 diabetic all my life, pretty much.  I have been on insulin as long as I can remember and I was wondering about getting off of it and taking metformin.  Or maybe not take as much insulin and take metformin to replace the insulin I don't take.  It would be great to not have to take insulin as it cuts into my activities and my life.  I hate to inject myself before every meal and it gets to be a pain.  I would think that after all of the technological advances we have that type 1s can't have the option of taking a pill.  What gives?  What's the difference between taking insulin and taking a pill other than that a shot is painful?

Safe To Get Pregnant? Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetes

I am thinking about getting pregnant.  I have type 1 insulin dependent diabetes.  My mom says I better not get pregnant or I will die from carrying a baby.  I think that is bogus.  I don't see women dying on the news from diabetes, or do they and we don't hear about it?  I will do anything to have a baby.  My boyfriend is very supportive as are my friends.  I am afraid to say anything to my doctor because he might say somethign about it to my mom.  I am 20 years old and my mom can't stop me but I want to make sure that I can carry a healthy baby.  Any one know taht for sure?

High Risk Pregnancy - Diabetes Type 2 ? Insulin Requirements?

I have type 2 diabetes and I am pregnant. I need to know about pregnancy insulin requirements. Some of my friends tell me I need more insulin and other tell me I should stay the same. Is there anyone out that is pregnant or was pregnant that has/had diabetes type 2? I'm a little concerned about this and not sure what to do. My husbands tells me I'm a worry wart especially about my pregnancy but I don't think he realizes that being diabetic and and being pregnant is high-risk business.

Allergy :: Allergic To Lip Products?

I am 18 years old, and I have never been allergic to anything in my life. As part of my nightly routine, I've always put on lip balm before bed. However, late last year, my lips started to get more dry and chapped than usual, even itchy. They felt like sand paper and often developed tiny bumps. If rubbed hard enough, the bumps would produce a clear liquid. The edges of my lips also sometimes felt very raw and red. These symptoms would last around a week.

At the time, I had been using just plain Burt's Bees Lip Balm for many weeks. When I got the symptoms, I used a bit more of the balm than I usually did, thinking it would work for dryness. When nothing seemed to be working, I stopped using it altogether. In time, my lips healed, and I switched to Softlips lipbalm in both vanilla and peppermint flavors. I showed no reaction from their usage for about a month. Then, I started getting the same reaction that I got from the Burt's Bees Lip Balm. That was when I figured I was developing an allergy to lip balm. Over time, I also realized I was getting the same reaction even faster from lipstick and lipgloss. That meant I was allergic to all lip products across the board.

I began researching into the symptoms and the ingredients in lip products, especially ones that commonly produced allergic reactions. With that knowledge in mind, I've tried many other balms these past months, including ones by Blistex and Kiss my Face. I'm even allergic to plain Chapstick. At first, I would not show any symptoms at all, but they would eventually show up within a few weeks, sometimes days. I even tried alternating the balms every night, which worked slightly but I would eventually get the reaction again. Nowadays, I only wear lip balm every few nights because I can't stand having chapped lips, but never multiple nights in a row. Even then, there's always a chance of my reacting to it.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact ingredient that I'm allergic to, and I'm hesitant to spend any more money to try more products. I haven't changed anything about my diet, makeup, facewash, mouthwash, or toothpaste, so I am very certain that it's the lip products. After my research I've also found that other people have had the same problem.

Has any product been found that works but doesn't trigger a reaction from people with my allergies?

I've heard that Vaseline is possibly the only solution, but because of my research I've been staying away from products with petroleum and petrolatum in them. Should I try it out anyway?

How Healthy Are Gluten Free Products Compared To Their Traditional Ones?

So, I have a gluten allergy and therefore cannot consume most of the typical grains. Traditional bread is typically made of wheat, and is also processed, so it's not very nutritious in my eyes. Gluten free bread is also processed but made from different flours such as rice, corn, and almond, etc. My question is, which do you think is "healthier" if you had to pick a side. With gluten free alternatives, there is still the presence of high calorie and high glycemic index foods within these GF products. So which one wins? Obviously I can't eat traditional bread but should I give up these GF alternatives and just opt for a more raw lifestyle? This is something I've wondered about for some time now. I'm newly out of college for nutrition and unfortunately it is something I never got to ask any of my professors.

Protein / Dairy Products Causing Urine Infection (UTI)

If (my mom) she consumes any food which has protein, she gets a urine infection and her bones start paining. To be more precise about the food which causes her this problem are

1. Chicken

2. Meat

3. Cheese

4. Butter (cake, biscuits having butter in it)

5. Lemon or any other kind of thing

6. Pickle

7. Egg

etc..

Because of this she has very limited options to eat and that is very disappointing. If she consumes any of these products she gets urine infection. Its almost more than 30 years she has been having this problem and to avoid this infection she avoids consuming these food items. I would like to know what could be the reason and what medications should be given to her so that she can have normal food habitat.

Diabetes :: What Diabetic Patients Are Allowed To Eat

Hello my mother has diabetes and she is trying to Control it, I was wondering what she is allowed to eat? cereals or any other things like that. I have searched online but unable to find something that she can actually eat. I know she's not allowed to have carbohydrates but I can't find things without it, I think 50/50 bread and brown paste are allowed but she can't live on this diet forever.
