Digestive Disorders :: Choking On Swallowing Liquids
Sep 13, 2013
I am a 34 year old female with a swallowing problem. I have had it for many years, it comes and goes. When I have any cold, flu or sickness it is worse and I choke so bad on liquid that I fall in the floor and can't catch my breath.I get scared after and I cry.I know this sounds crazy but I think for sure it will probably be how I die.I can even sip on liquids and it feels like I am going to choke. I have spit out liquids many times just because I couldn't swallow them.
Yes, I have stomach issues, but even on medication this problem never stopped. I have had tested on my throat ,I was even choking on the barium swallow and everything came back normal. It is my body however and I know there is a problem with my throat but no body believes me. I am tired of going to the doctors going through the same procedures 4 and 5 times and paying big amounts of money only to be told there is nothing they can do.I am at my wits end and feel hopeless. Can anyone explain this problem? Or am I alone?

Hey everyone! I have had an ongoing problem that I have tried multiple things to fix with my bloating issues.. To start I am petite and not overweight.. In the morning my stomach looks good and flat than any little thing I try to eat it bloats up and continues to through out the day until the next morning. This is a very stressful thing for me and I am on the path to try to resolve it. I have tried probiotics quite a few brands like Align, as well as others.. I have also taken digestive enzymes again a few different brands. I take fiber tablets and started taking peppermint oil caps and drinking lemon water every day. Nothing really has seemed to help. I did go to a doctor almost 2 years ago and they ran tests and said well nothing seems to be showing in your blood work have a nice day kind of thing. I get when you eat a large meal that this sort of thing can happen but its small things too like a banana, apple, a couple crackers, a piece of chicken.. basically anything.. I am wondering if anyone has had the same type of issues they may be able to give me guidance on.. Also, I do have an appointment set up for a gastrointestinal doctor in August maybe they will be able to help but this problem is really annoying and makes me very self conscious...

I am still continuing to feel nausea - especially in my throat area. Just had a second Gastroscope, good news is that my esophagus is healed not a grade 2 burned like it was back in Oct 2012, bad news Gastritis is still there. I really don't get abdomen pain but I really get this horrible taste and nausea feeling in my throat starting from the back of my upper palate going down. I saw my ent again and he said he could find nothing malignant nothing at all.
I even saw an Oral Pathologist whop said same thing - I know candida comes to mind but she said I have none of that.
So question is what is causing this? It's everytime I eat, no matter what even crackers that feeling of yuck like you feel like you want to vomit.
Any insight?
ps I have done an ultrasound and ct scan of abdomen, nothing found back in March for the record other than small polyps in gallbladder measuring 5 mm which again all docs dismiss as not being an issue.
Also had ct x ray done on lung and thorax area no abnormalities.
Had a lymph node biopsy as well, all they said was hyperplasma lymph node.

For the past couple of weeks I've been having some mild nausea most days than not. It doesn't last very long but does come and go throughout the day and it doesn't affect what I can and cannot eat. It doesn't seem related to food, smells, etc. just totally random. The very first time I felt nauseous was after smelling some nutmeg and that time I felt like I was going to throw up. Since then, every episode has been very minor.
I eat fairly healthy. Organic foods, very little dairy, cutting down on wheat, lots of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, spring mix, carrots, etc.), not too much meat (often just chicken). One thing I eat quite a bit of is Japanese sweet potatoes, sliced and baked (sometimes with the inside of the skin getting black). I also exercise quite often (biking, running, weight training, etc.)
My main concern is that I could possibly have stomach cancer. Is this possible? I've read the other symptoms but it seems like they're only obvious once the cancer is in the later stages.
Or could it be something else? And if so, what would cause such minor nausea with no other apparent symptoms?

I usually have a slow ish bowel movement transit time but it's never caused any dramas. (Every 3 days). Always soft.
Last week I seemed to have a lot of wind and go every day. 4 days ago I felt really sleepy and bloated. Since then I have felt off, slightly nauseous, gassy, burpy and my stomach feels bloated yet solid. I also don't have much appetite. Throw up a tiny bit in my mouth twice. No pain just don't feel right!! I keep expecting a bowel movement to clear whatever the issue is but it doesn't seem to.
Should I be worried.. should I just wait this out? Is it trapped wind or a backlog of something i ate that taking ages to digest. Am going to start taking Inner Health Plus tomorrow. Does twisting torso to left unwind the colon?

It's been about 6 months of feeling ill with these symptoms. I'm a 20 year old male and I have been checked with blood tests and stool samples. Also I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy and a ct scan of small intestine and one of the general abdomen. All these tests came back negative, and so I have been just dieting well with lots of water and benefiber, but I still feel the same. I also just had a kidney stone for first time about 2 weeks ago, and that made me thought it was linked to a kidney stone. So I had more blood tests and still came back negative. I am lactose intolerant but I have stayed away from any lactose when dieting. I really have no clue what's going on with my stomach; it has never felt like this before. I am curious could it possibly be a gallbladder problem even though the ct scans didn't pick anything up. It said that the gall bladder was remarkable from the ct scan report. I don't have a lot of pain like in most gallbladder cases, but I have heard of others with gallbladder problems that did not necessarily have a lot of pain.

I've been very disturbed and anxious with the condition of my wife. She's 24, gave birth to our first born 3 mos. ago, 4'9 in height and about 136 lbs. A month ago we noticed a lump at the right site of her neck just about half an inch from her adam's apple. The we decided to consult to an internist and instructed to do a thyroid ultrasound immediately. The result says that there is a small nodule in the right side of her thyroid gland, "a cyst" but her endocrinologist says that all his patients with the same diagnosis didn't have cancerous ones. My wife was given oral medications for about 3 months, one I can recall is the Levothyroxine.
Despite the doctor's calmness and no sense of urgency I can't help but to worry about my wife's condition. She finds it difficult to swallow food and sometimes feel little aching on that part of her neck.
I've always thought that eastern medical practices (here in the Philippines) are different from that in the west. And if I am right I'd like to consult here with somebody who can give us some advice on what to do/eat naturally and what to avoid.

I have had choking feeling for the last 2 months. It is now almost everyday. I sleep very well and do not wake up with it. I start getting it by the afternoon until bedtime. It is really bothering me. I have had hypothyroidism for 12 years but my tests are fine and my ultra sound is good too. The ENT doctor says it is stress related but I think there is more to it than stress. It is really bothering me and I do not know what to do?

Over the past one-two years I have been getting stressed about school work, my appearance, my friends etc. and I had a conversation with some of my friends and they thought I may have had anxiety. I thought nothing of it because it wasn't much at the time but lately it's been getting worse. I feel sick all the time and the most common thing is the choking part. I feel like someone is trying to choke me, but obviously no one is. I have trouble breathing when this happens and my throat closes up and I kind of feel a bit dizzy. I have looked at some websites and they all say it may be a certain infection or something but I want to know if this has anything to do with anxiety? I still have not told anyone about the choking thing except my mum because I want to be sure I am getting this right before I start seeking help.

I'm a 27 year old female and I've been having abdominal pain for 2 months now. I've had a CT scan and blood tests done and everything came back normal other than an elevated WBC in the urinalysis. I can't get in to see my doctor for a few days and just want some peace of mind. I'm having bad sharp upper abdominal pain. It started on the left side originally but is now happening all over my stomach and I'm ridiculously bloated. I started having weird bone pain a few weeks afterward--there is no pattern. My hands will hurt, then my left leg will hurt, then my right hip, etc. Today I started noticing a metallic taste in my mouth as well. Anyone know what this could be? I've researched everything from hemochromatosis (my mom carries the gene) to H Pylori but nothing fits perfectly.

I am desperate and scared. I've always been a "slow swallower" but a couple of weeks ago things got much worse. I suddenly had extreme difficulty swallowing water. I was drinking a glass full and it made me feel like gagging, I had to stop and spit it out, I could not swallow. Ever since then it is extremely hard to swallow water. Oranje juice is a little easier and solids generally are okay. It is the initiation of a swallow that is hard. The water is in my mouth and I don't just automatically swallow, I have to think about i, it takes about 15 seconds to get a mouthful down. And I feel so much like gagging every time I have water in my mouth. It is worse if someone is in the room with me.
Everything I read points to something bad - ALS, brain tumors, etc. I am crying and crying I am so scared. The doctor doesn't know and won't' rule anything out until I have the swallowing evaluation (barium) and the ENT visit.
Also scaring me into thinking it is ALS is that I have had problems with my voice for several months, hoarseness, can't project, people can't hear me, I always have to repeat myself, I stumble and slur over words..
I'm scared of the swallow test, I read you have to drink 3 ounces of water as fast as you can. It makes me cry to think about that, it will take me 10 minutes.
I am so scared, can anyone give me any reassuring words? Has anyone ever had something like this happen and it wasn't serious?

I have had swallowing problems, oesophagus pain, burning in chest feeling as though food is getting stuck and an awful sensation of a lump in my throat for the last four years. I was wrongly diagnosed with GERD and treated with PPIs. My symptoms have gradually got worse and after three attempts managed the manometry and twenty four hour pH test following this I have been recently diagnosed with achalasia. I feel so unwell and life is feeling unbearable I can only tolerate liquids at present and my symptoms seem to have deteriorated since diagnosis feels like everything sticking in my throat an awful taste the lump has got worse and feels like I can't feel my throat properly and my swallow feels weak. All my symptoms are bringing on the most awful feeling of anxiety and I just don't know where to turn no one understands how bad this feels. Has anyone else had this terrible sensation of a lump and at the same time a sort of lack of sensation in the throat.

I have had an issue of painful mouth sores for well over a year. They appear in my cheeks, the sides of my tongue and my gums below my front teeth. Today my tongue feels very raw. I have seen a Dentist, Periodontist, Endocrinologist, Rheumatologist, Oncologist and gastroenterologist as well as my family doctor over the past year. I have GI problems that have led me to some of these doctors but I have discussed the mouth problems with every one of them and no one can help me! On Tuesday I had a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis looking for a tumor because of some troubling results from numerous blood tests. They did not find a tumor but found spots on my liver. I will return on June 24th and 25th for an MRI of my kidney and pancreas plus a test where they will put a tube with a tiny camera down my throat to look around. I was told that I have inflammation all throughout my digestive system. It is the oncologist that is ordering these tests because he's still concerned in spite of the good CT scan. He is the only doctor that I didn't really discuss the mouth sores with and I'm wondering if all the GI tract issues that I have couldn't be the same thing that is causing my mouth sores? Like some acid or something my body is producing that is causing it. Oh, I left one doctor out, I don't even remember his specialty but he did a biopsy on my mouth and that was clear. Do any of these symptoms together ring a bell with anyone? Also has anyone had a successful prescription or home remedy to heal or at least relieve the pain from these sores?

About a year ago or so I started to notice a change in my Peripheral vision. I found myself having to completely look to my right while driving because of a blind spot and I also noticed when I shaved my underarms I could no longer see them (very blurry) if that makes any sense. I didn't have and insurance so I had to wait. Fast forward to last month. I saw an Ophthalmologist thinking it was vision problems of some sort. Well, I miserably failed the test that checks for peripheral vision. He then looked at the optic nerve and didn't see anything that would suggest normal vision loss. He said I have lost almost all Peripheral vision in my right eye and a good amount on my left. He referred me to a neurologist that I will see this Monday. I was glad because I had also been having some issues with what seems like pinched nerves in the neck and shoulders, I thought it could be related to some nerve issues. So my other issue which I didn't correlate as being possibly related until today is that I have been having some major digestive problems that have flared up on and off since February. I am having a lot of indigestion, gas and constipation.. The constipation is pretty bad, sometimes I can't go and I resort to taking laxatives for relief. And I have this really annoying muscle twitching in my lower abdomen! It feels like a vibration, I have been having that for a couple of weeks now. I have been so miserable that I made an appt for next week to see a gastro doctor. But then tonight I Googled the vibrating issue and was noticing that there were many people on MS boards with similar problems. And then it hit me that there seems to be a lot of coincidences between my issues and MS. Now I am worried. Did any of you experience similarities before a diagnosis? And how are people diagnosed?

I had Peritonitis 8 days ago so had my Appendix removed Laparoscopically. It took 5 days for me to have a bowel motion...if you can call it that! For the 1st couple of days when I guess my bowels were 'waking up' was getting really sore cramps. Now after I eat I have the sense of urgency to go, and then have some pains which go after I have been to the toilet. Is this normal and will it get better, or is my digestive track in turmoil like IBS? It's only early days so I'm hoping it's all normal and will get better with time.

I smoked my last cigarette on September 12th. I hate not smoking. I hate the 40 lb. weight gain, the digestive upset, the hives, the shortness of breath, waking up at night in tears and panic, crying over the smallest thing, the boredom, not having anything to do when I take a break. Nothing smells good, nothing tastes good. My skin and hair now have a rancid smell that won't wash off and makes me nauseous. My complexion is a pasty gray like unbaked pie dough. Friends say I smell bad and am embarrassing to be around.
If this is what non-smokers experience every day, I don't know how they stand it. Life used to be good; now it's a never-ending nightmare with new aches and symptoms of sickness showing up every day.
I'd like to find the person who convinced me to do this and hurt them.

I've been taking ramipril now for 9 years with no significant side effects, but lately I've developed a dry mouth and difficulty in swallowing. I've had various blood tests which have all been ok. Could Ramipril cause this condition after so many years ?
