Back Issues :: Laser Spine Fusion - Review? Feedback?

Feb 8, 2014

Having dealt with lower back pain for 20 something years and having had all the therapies the doctors could throw at me (traction, aqua therapy - read hot tub- inversion table, multiple PT sessions, electrical stimulation, po narcotics, epidural steroidal injections and more). It has now come to the point that surgery is the next option.

My spinal surgeon wants to fuse L2 to the sacrum due to multi-level disc bulging and herniation at the end of April 2014.

Then people have steered me in the direction of what Laser Spine Institute can do and I actually have approval from insurance to have treatment there and the process of getting treated there is also underway parallel to the above mentioned surgery.

So my dilemma is what to do. LSI offers what seems to be a minimally invasive, faster recovery option, but with newer technology that is not necessarily proved to give long lasting results.

On the other hand a full lumbar traditional fusion statistically gives relief to 30%, 30% get worse and 30% stay the same as for pain relief and with a 3-6months recover. And once you get fused like that, you paint yourself way into a corner if it is not an improvement for you.

The traditional surgeon does not have much good to say about LSI, but I am thinking of course he is not going to recommend that since he does the traditional approach.

Doing the LSI treatment does not exclude a traditional fusion later, however we have great insurance now, with great short term disability coverage and now is the ideal time to do a traditional fusion and be able to have the months of recovery without worries.

Reading about LSI people have varied opinions, many people say they have had great results and others say they are a quackery out to get people's money. Our insurance have said they would cover treatment though.

Don't know what to do.

Does anyone have experience with someone getting lumbar spine treatment at LSI and what was the experience.

ENT :: Stapedectomy - Feedback / Review?

I've had bad hearing since a child.  Am now 56.  Had first hearing aids about ten years ago.  Learnt to live with decreased hearing till then.  Now got NHS aids.  Six weeks (approx) ago, I noticed I'd lost 75% of what hearing I had in my left ear.  No wax as had checked. Went to check aids.  They were ok.  Its my hearing that has deteriorated considerably in a very short space of time.  Was offered stapedectomy 20yrs ago. Decided against it as success rate 50%! Now I think the time has come where I shall be offered stapedectomy and I need as much info as poss.  Want to hear from people that have had this done and has it improved your hearing or made it worse (not that mine can get any worse!).  Where you had it done?  I would not be able to consider going abroad due to lack of funds.

TMJ Joint Replacement? Review? Feedback?

Background. I've had symptoms of Condylar Resorption for 6 years. Well technically I have not had ANY condyles for the last 2 years. I'm not in extreme pain. I have maybe 4 or 5 days a month where I can't function well from headaches, jaw, tooth, basically all over pain from the neck up. The rest of the time its livable but constant. I've been in two different jaw splints but since the last one broke two years ago, I have not wanted to invest in more as they are quite spendy. My pain is not extremely bad but if you press anywhere on my face it does hurt. Only my back teeth touch, my chin has receded, I can't breathe through my nose and I can fit my tongue through my front teeth. I'm concerned about my teeth not touching because my dentist said it would cause problems down the road if they continued to not touch. I'm also wondering if my top and bottom jaw just banging together is going to cause problems too. I have small children and having a major surgery that could make me permanently worse is not something I want to do to them. I am also getting this surgery done by Dr. Larry Wolford if that has anything to do with it. The first "TMJ Specialist" I saw thought his splints would miracle cure it. The last two I have seen have both said my only option to fix my bite and joints is surgery but I have not talked to one since the splint broke 2 years ago.

Partial Knee Replacement Osteotomy? Any Feedback / Review ?

After 1 arthroscopy, 1 bone graft, 2 ACLr my surgeon now thinks I may need a pkr or osteotomy. I know it's an impossible question to ask - but someone may have been through the same thing - if I have a pkr will the pain go? I'm reluctant to go through anymore surgery but I'm struggling walking sometimes.

Bowel Disorder :: Laser Hemorrhoid Surgery? Feedback, Reviews?

A few weeks ago, I saw a specialist who does laser surgery and infrared coagulation for hemorrhoids. He took a look at my backside, and recommended that I get laser surgery. So I scheduled it, and got 4 days off from work approved by my boss for the surgery and recovery.

But now that the surgery date is drawing near, (this coming Tuesday) my hemorrhoids don't feel as swollen or painful as they did when I first scheduled the appointment with the doctor. A month earlier, my hemorrhoids were KILLING me. But now my bowel movements are pretty much pain-free. I looked at my backside using a mirror, and it doesn't look as bad back there as it had a month ago.

So now I'm thinking: Should I still go through with this scheduled surgery? I'll be paying a lot out of pocket for it because I have a pretty high deductible on my insurance. Is it worth it to go ahead and get the procedure done anyway to prevent them from flaring up again? The doctor told me in our initial appointment that once you get the laser procedure done, your hemorrhoids won't come back. Anyone else who's had it done find that to be true?

Back Issues :: Bruised Feeling On The Side Of My Spine

I have back ache on the right side and when i lift my right arm up it hurts in my shoulder area. The bottom of my back on the right aches too. If i touch a certain spot on the right side of my spine it feels like it's bruised but it isn't. Also if i sit a certain way when i get up my right leg feels stiff and sore. Basically the right side of my body doesn't feel right from my neck to my hip but i can't pinpoint where it's originating from apart from the bruised feeling on the side of my spine.

Back - T12-L5 Fusion :: Edema Around Screw

My last back surgery was a T12-L5 fusion to correct scoliosis. I would say it's a failed back surgery because my back is so weak I must use either a cane or walker most of the time. I have constantly had a burning pain in my groin and lower back for which I take oxycodone and use ice to relieve the pain.

Now the question: for more than a year (the surgery was 2 years ago) I have had swelling with fluid around one of the T12 screws. X-rays were done then and again the last of May and both show the screw has backed out somewhat but is still intact. In fact, the more recent x-ray is exactly like the first one, so it seems it isn't moving. My neurosurgeon said he could remove the screw and cut the rod down if I wanted him to. At the time, I said, "No, not yet." That was a couple months ago. However, the edema is getting larger, moving to the right side of my spine and moving lower. It's also getting almost impossible to get a good seating position because of it.

Sorry to be so long about this, but I'm wondering if any of you have had this problem, and if so, what did you do about it? At the moment, I'm facing a total shoulder replacement surgery in 2 weeks, and then possibly eye surgery after that, so I can't do anything soon, it seems. Just trying to see what my options are.

Back Issues :: Clicking After L5 - S1 Spinal Fusion

I am almost 2 years post op from an L5 - S1 spinal fusion. I had three surgeries in 9 months before the fusion. I have never been 100% since. The pain is not as severe or crippling, but there is much that I am unable to do. I cannot stand for more than 20 minutes, cannot walk around for more than 30 minutes and have to alternate sitting with laying down. I take Vicodin 1-2 times each day for the pain. I also have numbness in the left foot from the middle toe to the pinky and around the outside of the foot to the heel. My concern now is that I hear a "clicking" when I get up from sitting or lying down. I live in Minnesota and the winter is brutal! I suffer more with extreme cold and damp weather. Is this something to be concerned with or just another item to learn to accept? Is it possible to have an MRI after a fusion?

Back Issues :: Cold Laser Therapy

I have a number of back problems, n have had surgery. Trying everything from ESI's, to..the list is too long, I gave up for many years after being told the pump was my only next option.

I recently decided to try the cold laser therapy they do on animals for arthritis, and according to their pamphlet helps with a number of things..I don't have the list with me but promised I would write after the treatment. Yes, there was some alleviation..but it is one of a few chronic areas n they say at least 6 treatments for areas that bad,,2nd treatment tomorrow.

I will post again after that but I have to add.. I haven't been able to lay on my stomach for 20 yrs without severe pain trying to get or roll off my stomach..I had neither. I laid there 20 min n I should've been in tears half way through n I wasn't. There may be more..but I am not going to try to explain until I try a few more of these treatments.

I have a lot of scar tissue n osteoarthritis in this area to start, n I would say it is worth the effort if u have the same problems and nothing else has worked.

Back Issues :: Post Fusion Pain Opposite Side

I'm three weeks out from l5-s1 fusion. For the last week I'm having the same pain I did ore surgery but on the other side. I'm really getting worried. It's different pain than post surgery pain. It's my right butt cheek and right calf pain. It's there all the time. Like a sharp knife in the muscle pain with tingly numbness. If I don't have a disc to herniate, what could this be? I'm done with pain and surgery. I can't take this any more

Back Issues :: Single Facet Joint Removal And Fusion

My L4-L5 synovial cyst that I had removed two months ago has recurred again - this was the 2nd removal, so I've now grown 3 synovial cysts from the same dysfunctional facet joint.

One surgeon has recommended removing the bad facet joint which is causing the cysts and doing a microscopic fusion just at that level on that one side. I have no instability and no back pain issues elsewhere, so this is sounding like my best option, and not a very extensive surgery. I was wondering if anyone has had a fusion with a facet joint removal and how it worked out.

Back Issues :: Trouble Sleeping After Spinal Fusion 11 Weeks Ago

I had an l4/l5 fusion 11 weeks ago. During the day I'm doing really well. Starting my phased return to work and going on my exercise bike. Have little discomfort during the day other than if I reach incorrectly or sit for too long etc.

I am really struggling at night. As soon as I get into bed in any position I am in immense pain. I struggle to sleep and wake up constantly through the night. My physio has changed all my exercises to ensure nine involve laying down so at least now I only have to worry about night times.

Has anyone else had this problem?? Anyone got any advice?? Am taking ibuprofen during the day and codydramol at night but doesn't seen to help.

Back Pain :: Sciatica Pain Unrelated To Spine Bifida

I'm a teenager who suffers from Sciatica pain. Please note that doctors have not told me this, I googled it and Sciatica exactly describes my pain. I have Spina bifida occulta, but was told it shouldn't cause me any pain. Not sure if that is relating to my pain. I had an X-RAY and an MRI (I think) and the doctor said it was fine... but that still does not explain my pain? It's been going on for maybe 4-5 years?

Back Issues :: Spinal Cord Stimulator Or Spinal Fusion Surgery?

I had back surgery in March 2013 that left me with mechanical instability, acquired spondylolisthesis and lots of pain.

I have 2 ortho spine surgeons telling me that I need a bi-level spinal fusion surgery to repair the damage, but after the botched first surgery, the thought of another surgery scares me to death. Plus, since surgery is what spine surgeons do, the recommendation seems obvious.

I also started seeing a new pain management doctor (we moved to a new state) and he is suggesting that I consider a spinal cord stimulator trial, with surgical implantation if we find that it helps the pain.

So...I'm left confused. I see the positives and negatives of each, but I'm just not sure if one makes more sense over the other. I think that my spondylolisthesis will worsen over time and could pose a threat of nerve damage, while the spinal cord stimulator is designed to mask pain and does nothing to address the instability.

I'd love to know if anyone else has faced a similar decision...or has thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions for considering one over the other.

Spine Surgery, ALIF At L4 &5 - S1 :: Leg Cramps

I am 18 months out from my 4 th spine surgery, ALIF at L4&5-s1. The surgery has been a huge success, no back pain and only occasional mild aching in my legs with ibuprofen for pain control as needed.

My problem is the continuing cramping in my foot, calf, back of the thigh and buttock on the affected side. One or more of those areas cramp multiple times a day. I lay in bed at night and can feel the Calf muscle twitching, have to keep my foot flexed to prevent cramping. As soon as I doze off, my foot relaxes and the calf immediately cramps, meaning I have to get up and walk to stop the cramping. Anyone else have this issue? Any insight? Muscle relaxants have only minimal effect, and I hate the thought of taking them every night. The problem intensifies the more exercise I get, which is discouraging.
