Anxiety :: Coming Off Propranolol - By Cutting The Tablet?
Mar 20, 2015
I have been on 10mg PROPRANOLOL for a few years for anxiety attacks which would last 4 days of continuous sickness and sweating, also heart palpitations.
I have managed to control this over the past 2 years and very rarely get panic attacks , if i do the sickness and palpitations last a day.
I was taking this medication twice a day, however the beginning of last year i weaned myself down to one tablet a day (10mg) and then eventually stopped taking my tablets all together. i then became very anxious and had to reverse back to 0ne tablet daily. This is with the odd attack.
A year later and having no attacks i would like to try again and wean myself of completely but scared i will revert back to being sick an anxious again. However putting that to one side and thinking positive i would like to stop them.
Can i cut the tablets with a drug cutter and reduce the amount to 5 mg daily and stop.

I really want to get off propranolol but I can't seem to do it without getting horrible withdrawal symptoms like racing heart, sweats, dizziness and breathlessness! Has anyone successfully got off it and if so how did you do it? I have tried tapering my dose I have went from 120mg per day down to 10/20mg a day but this last hurdle is messing with me!

I have been taking Propranolol 40mg 3 times a day and been told to stop taking this and start on Nortriptyline 10 mg once day for migraine prevention. As I have only been taking for 1 month how should I reduce to stop? I don't feel great after reducing to 2 yesterday. I took 2 on Monday, not sure what to do today.

My doctor gave me 10 mg of propranolol for anxiety and she said it was ok to take with my bp. My bp ranges from 95/70 to sometimes 102/70 when my anxiety gets up. My pulse is usually around 75 resting and once I get up and my heart palpitations are bothering me at 75 beats per minute and I feel like I need to get up and move around which is like an akathisia feeling, my heart rate will go over 100, usually 104 -110 when I have to get up and walk around. Should I take 5mg or 2.5 mg just to see how it does since my bp can run low and my resting heart rate is 95/75 - 90/70? I have the sweaty palms and headache also during these times. My Paxil is not working anymore and it's causing this anxiety.

I took the plunge and took the tablets 40mls a day twice a day for around 3 weeks, then due to side effects, reduced to 10 mls twice a day.
My constant panic attacks are not there anymore, just now and again. I found that the tablets must of interacted with the citalopram 10mls as I felt really alert of them and couldn't sleep, general anxiety symptoms were increased. Since reducing I am able sleep, my pulse rate is still up, but not as bad as before.

Does anyone else feel like this, I wake up (that's if I have slept of course) and I'm filled with dread. My husband goes to work very early and I hate him saying he is leaving, my anxiety is dreadful in the morning and sometimes lasts all day, when I go to bed at night I already start worrying about the next day! I am on day 9 of 20mg of citalopram and propranolol so hoping meds will start working soon. But does anyone fill withdrew due in the morning?

I'm been put on 10mg of propranolol daily for palpitations and anxiety...my pulse rate normal sits between 60-70 BPM and when I take these propranolol I feel like my heart beat is just going to stop which is making my anxiety 100% worse...my question is can't my heart just stop beating ? Can I half these tablets down to 5mg? Can't get this shaky constant panicky feeling away..

I was wondering if anyone has even been on propranolol 40mg once a day for anxiety and stopped smoking and if so did you feel fine!
I want to stop smoking but on the leaflet it says consult your doc if u start or stop smoking.
I did ask my gp but he dismissed the leaflet and just said stop smoking - I kinda didn't trust his answer.

I had been prescribed proletarian for anxiety 10 mg to take as and when I need to take them. This was about four weeks ago I leveled out at 3-4 tablets a day.. It took me two weeks for the symptoms and side effects to go and it was truly horrible getting there. After the side effects did settle ( although not entirely) on week three my doctor advised me to try to take them as and when I need to as I had gotten used to taking them at routine times of the day and not when the anxiety was present . I left the doctors surgery and didn't take another for a full week. I felt cured, perfect in fact for a full week. it seemed the doctor was right I was taking tablets for anxiety I didn't have.I had the best week ever No anxiety, no side effects. Completely me again. On the 7th day I woke feeling anxious, all my symptoms back again, unable to function. I took a 10 mg tablet and the whole list of side effects returned as strong as they were in the very beginning. Horrible. That was Monday.Monday was so bad. anxiety AND terrible side effects from the tablets.Tuesday I had anxiety in the morning but couldn't take a tablet as I still had the same horrible buzzing head from the day before, the anxiety eased off late afternoon, and today this morning the same.Horrid anxiety. I would like advice from people who take this as and when please, as right now I am feeling like my choice is either severe anxiety or horrendous side effects taking the tablets.

I have been taking 15mg of mirtazapine for 6 months for sleep problems and anxiety.
It has helped me sleep and feel more relaxed. But have struggled with word retrieval and foggy head. I decided to come off it and have been on 7.5 mg for 4 weeks, I have been doing ok but the last three days have had problems sleep waking after 3 hours and my anxiety feels like it coming back! Is this just withdrawal or am I going back my old ways?

Been on Venlafaxine 75 mg timed release tablets for about two years. I have waited til the spring to try to come off as it's sunnier and better time of year to do it. Had mild depression for two years and then had some nasty panic attacks when I moved house two years ago. In the UK we have the normal tablet and then the timed release tablet. I am trying to come off by using the 37.5mg timed release in the morning then the 37.5mg normal tablet with 10% (7.5 mg) chopped in the evening, for a starter. I previously tried going one day on the 37.5 and then the 75mg and try to alternate but this seemed too big a drop for me. Funny now as I feel a bit more snappy and vulnerable with this tiny 10% reduction. I was hoping that this small reduction wouldn't be noticed and I could slowly withdraw from this drug.

Although I'm trying to cut down etc and make my life better which I am , I'm suffering the most terrible nightmares!
Since I moved to my new house last August I've had the most terrible dreams ! Has anybody experienced sleep paralysis ?? I've researched this as have experienced this before but recently in this house I have periods where its terrible ! Last night was awful but I coped better because I knew what was happening , although awful ! . I don't want to explain exactly what happens because I don't want people thinking of this before they sleep . Just wondered if this was linked to drinking ?? I think this is perhaps linked to psychosis ?? I'm worried . I drink a bottle of wine a night , sometimes more but not normally and have done for 15 years . There is a family history of alcohol addiction plus mental health in my family!

I had a high transsphincteric fistula (multiple abscesses). CRS placed a cutting seton with fistulotomy in July. CRS told me that the seton would be in prob 4-6 weeks. It is now 8 weeks later, new CRS (first one moved), told me that he doesn't use these much as they are not tolerated well and that he thinks he will have to go back in and tighten it as it is not advancing. He says this is/can be a long process. Now I am to go back in several weeks to finalize new plan. Problem is, after surgery, I had Augmentin. The fistula track was not draining like it was supposed to and I got another abscess... after the fistulotomy and seton placement. CRS gave me Augmentin which I'm not sure really helped. So, I got a total body rash from the augmentin. I lasted 5 weeks before I was so miserable that I finally took oral steroids from Dermatologist with CRS approval. After I did two weeks of steroids, which helped tremendously, the rash came right back. Derm subsequently gave me a new prescription for prednisone (for one month taper!) and told me that it is a rebound rash after I stopped steroids. CRS says he won't do next surgery until I am off of prednisone for several weeks. Do I take the prednisone? or try to power thru the rash and not tear off my skin? How long will this next seton take to cut thru? wonder if it will get "stuck" midway too? More tightening procedures? Oh.. what to do?
