Allergies :: Hives From Medication (Levaquin For Pneumonia)
Sep 11, 2015
A little over 3 weeks ago I was treated intravenously with Levaquin for pneumonia. About 20 minutes into the drip I started to get large hives! This has been going on for over 3 weeks now. The hives are not nearly as bad as they were but I'm still getting them. I was taking benadryl at first but was then switched to Allegra. I stopped taking it 2 days ago to see if the hives have subsided. For the most part they are not as bad but now anytime my skin gets warm I have a breakout. Needless to say I'm not getting much sleep bc I keep waking up to hives and have to sleep in a cool room so I don't get too hot. Very frustrating!! Anyone ever have this happen? How long did it take for the hives to go away?

Ok so I've been trying to get rid of my hives for a little over a week now. This is the first time I've had them. I've gone to the doctor twice and the ER once for them. The doctor gave me 2 steroid shots and gave me some scripts. I'm using Triamcinolone Acetonide cream, I'm on day 4/6 MethylPREDNISolone pills, and I'm taking Hydroxyzine pills 4x daily. The ER suggested that it may be scabies and prescribed me the cream which I've already used and am through with. The ER also gave me a shot of meds that was suppose to kill the scabies if there were any and gave me a shot of benadryl. The ER wasn't sure if I actually had scabies or not but went ahead and treated me for them just in case. I live in my apartment with my boyfriend and he has been untouched. I've washed everything washable in hot water twice now and I've been staying at my grandmother's house until I can get rid of them. But they're still popping up. I haven't changed anything in my diet. I do own 3 cats but have never had problems with them. They are indoor cats and I haven't seen them in 4 days. I haven't changed anything in my daily routine. I'm just completely out of ideas for why/how I've gotten them and why I can't get rid of them. I have another prednisone treatment waiting at the pharmacy for me prescribed by the ER but haven't picked it up yet because I'm still taking the Methyl. I have been to an allergist but all the tests came back negative.

I am an Australian who has been travelling to USA annually for the last 6 years.
Every time I visit the USA, after approx 4 or 5 days I break out in itchy, red bumps (hives?) all over my torso and upper arms. The outbreak lasts as long as I stay in the USA, and subsides almost completely within 24-48hrs after returning to Australia.
I have stayed at different hotels each time, so I don't think bedding can be blamed, and there is not a particular food I believe triggers this...
What could it be in USA that I am so allergic to, that does not exist in Australia. I travel the world extensively for work and have not experienced the rash in any other region either.
Antihistamines (Benadryl) does not seem to help at all.
Is there some food additives/preservatives that are unique to USA that I may be sensitive to?

I have been breaking out in hives for 11 months. They started shortly after I had some surgery. Sometimes they cover most of my body, and the itch keeps me awake at night. Other times they are tolerable. I have read every blog I could find on the subject looking for some help. Last week I stumbled on some posting on this site which was worth giving a try. In short, it said that dehydration could be causing my problem. Well, I have always had a hard time drinking much water in a day and relied mostly on diet sodas for my liquid consumption. So on Friday, I started drinking 64oz of water each day and am cutting out the soda for now. Well, I am only 3 days into this plan, but it is really helping. I know it will take some time to hydrate my body, but I am very optimistic. I thought I would post this in case there is anyone out there the is struggling like I have been.

About two days ago I had an allergic reaction to a detergent in my friends blankets. I went to the doctor the next day and found out it was hives. The doctor prescribed me PREDNISONE and some benadryl, I've also been applying Clotrimazole cream. It works for a little while, but comes back eventually very itchy and irritating. I took two PREDNISONE and two benadryl yesterday, but today I've took two PREDNISONE and about five or six benadryl. I even tried taking a cool bath and I've applied the cream multiple times. After a while the hives just start to itch again and I can't sleep.

I cannot afford to see an allergist, and my insurance is terrible.
If I take any medications such as advil, aleve, aspirin I develop hives. I also discovered taking benadryl and claritin to help my hives makes it worse. Everytime I take any of these medications I develop hives on my face (usually already have hives on my arms and legs sometimes chest)
I still, however, get hives (not as bad) when I do not use medications. I cannot pinpoint what is causing my hives. This is been going on for over a year. They come and go usually daily, never go more than a a few days without them.

I have a carrot allergy. When I ingest carrots, raw or cooked, I immediately break out in large hives and severe swelling all over my body. Not fun to suddenly have this happen after eating carrots all my life. Okay, I now avoid carrots in all forms, but I would like to know about BETA-CAROTENE. I see it listed as an ingredient in foodstuffs and I want to know if carrot allergy includes beta-carotene? I can't seem to find anything on the net other than beta-carotene is good for you, nothing about possibility of allergy to. Anyone?

A couple of years ago, I went into hospital for a routine operation on my tongue. After the procedure my tongue was very swollen, so they decided to put me back to sleep until the swelling went down. Unfortunately I then contracted sepsis and pneumonia, was on life support for a week or so. It took me a long time to recover physically and mentally from this experience. I had the most horrendous hallucinations whilst in ICU. I felt like I had been buried alive, embalmed, some of the nurses were from hell and some were from heaven and they were both trying to take me. Even though this was a long time ago now, I still remember it like it was yesterday. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I had pneumonia in my left lung 3 weeks ago which was very painful. I now have completed antibiotics but still have pain in my lower rib area that is very sharp when I yawn, cough, laugh or burp. This pain is not getting better. I had an ARNP tell me she does not hear any air movement in my lower lung. I'm curious What may be causing the pain. I never had it before the pneumonia and it doesn't seem to be going away.

3 months ago I was diagnosed with Septic Pneumonia and was in hospital for 10 days. It took me a good month to recover and sometimes I still think I am. I have chronic lung probs already from being a prem baby. Since I have had my last bout of pneumonia I have been feeling a clicking sensation in my left side where I had the pneumonia and pleurisy. Could someone explain what this clicking feeling is? Is it part of the scarring that's left?

I have been taking clarithromycin for pneumonia along with amoxicillin. the worst side effect i have experienced is the chemical taste in my mouth which has taken away my appetite and makes me nauseous. the only thing that masks it for a while is brushing my teeth, but my advice to anyone using these pills is to get rid of any air fresheners and take measures such as using roll on deodorant instead of a spray as this seems to aggravate it. i have just been given yet another course of these because my pneumonia has returned but to be honest i'd rather put up with the taste than end up in hospital again!

I've had a swollen lymph node under my jaw on the left side of my neck for over a month now. It's very hard and it hurts. I was tested for mononucleosis and it came out positive, but I have had none of the symptoms except for fatigue and the lymph node. Today, I found a very small but also hard bump on the back of my neck, very close to the left side. I was reading online that this could be related to the fact that I have a swollen lymph node. I was also told by my doctor that my spleen has gotten very large. I know all this is because I have mononucleosis, but is there any way I could be having something worse? I'm a teen female if that helps with any answers. Also, the lymph node is not getting any smaller and I've taken three different antibiotics given to me by my doctor. Also, I have had a cold and pneumonia since i got the swollen node.

Could anyone tell me what the best medication and treatment is for LPR? And how long after does it take to settle?
I am 99% sure I have LPR.
ENT confirmed with a nose scope yesterday the posterior part of my larynx was swollen due to reflux.
I have read up on LPR and this would explain my breathing difficulty, waking up choking, rare heart burn and acid, difficulty swallowing, frequent laryngitis, constant throat clearing, waking up with a sore throat, sore ears inside, swollen lymph nodes, swollen glands etc.
I am a little more positive than I was just a bit worried incase this is it for life

I could really use some advice as soon as possible. I've recently started going to therapy, and for whatever reason I seem to be getting worse. I have generalised anxiety, kinda severe ocd and mild depression.
I'm now considering meds as I can't seem to cope and I'm terrified almost all the time.
But I'm also on a contraceptive pill called microlite and I've heard some meds can stop the pill working right. I'm scared of unplanned pregnancy so I'd really appreciate advise from anyone who's on meds who could advise me what to take?
Obviously I'll talk to my doctor but she's a little old fashioned and I worry she might prescribe the wrong thing.
