Acute Urinary Retention After Stroke
Dec 1, 2013
Friend had stroke end of jan. He's now having serious retention problems. Drs not sure if it is neurological or physical. He's trying to urinate every 10 mins with acute pain. If it's neurological I wouldn't have thought he was trying to void. He's had a urethral catheter in since stroke till a few weeks ago and now got a convince catheter. Problem has got increasingly worse over last few months and last week extremely worse. He's due to go into hospital on Monday if bed available for other treatment. Today though I may insist on him going down to a&e as the pain is now getting much worse. He's even on morphine for other issues and pain goes beyond this. Any thoughts?

Does anybody suffer from water retention on this med? I currently taking 45mg and only drink tea or bottled water, but my face is puffy and my knees and ankles have ballooned up to the fact that I feel I cannot bend my ankles, I am willing to put up with this as the med is helping loads, I have tried herbal diuretics that don't seem to help, and when I do go for a pee its like nothing comes out, is this what causes the weight gain as I have not had the munchies like so many people seem to have on hear.
Also I am terrified of taking the 45mg tablet, I have been taking 30 + 15 mg, has anybody noticed a difference, will my good sleep go? who and I do sweat a lot, night and day.

Ive been on nortriptyline for, id say at least 5 years plus now, 75mg daily for chronic migraine.
I was searching google about fluid in the abdomen which i have had for the past few years, i literally look 5 months pregnant which nevers goes away or down and i came across something about anti depressants causing water retention.
Does anyone know if fluid retention can be caused by nortriptyline?

We need water to survive. Our bodies don't function properly without it. This is a fact. When our defense system, Exa: our lymphatic system, bowels and urinary systems.. when these systems become clogged and fail to work properly we may become ill, start to retain fluids and developers all manner of conditions, disorders and diseases. If we develope edemas, swelling, water retention doctors may prescribe water pills or diuretics. In severe cases the doctor may restrict water intake. Do you have a situation like this? Tell me what you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What beverage do you have with your meals? I'd like to ask some questions, get some answers and perhaps share some food for thought.

I have been diagnosed with spinal disc herniation on L4 and L5 on my back + spondylolisthesis. I was relatively pain free for about a month until all of the sudden the pain came back a week ago, now stronger than ever. It's typical sciatica pain, shooting down pain from my right lower back all the way to the right ankle. When I sit down it helps but I literally can't walk for more than about 100metres at a time, the pain comes too much. I've already been out of work for the whole week and really can't afford more so I'm desperate for some relief.
I've been to the doctors a couple of times this week. So far they have given me: Arcoxia 90mg (tried that twice, no relief), Naproxen 500mg (no relief), Co-codamol 30/500mg (took three of these one day,no relief) and now I've taken Amitriptyline 25mg at nights. I've slept fine but it has not had any sort of an affect during the day. I haven't taken any of these together though, I mean I've just taken one medicine at a time.
If anyone has ANY idea what could help in this acute pain, I'd really appreciate it! Has anyone tried sea salt with their bath, how does that work? I've heard people have got some help of that. And next time I'm going to my GP (probably in a couple of days), any ideas what medicine I should ask for?

Has anyone noticed any relationship between Sjogrens and water retention? It seems like, since Sjogrens attacks moisture, they wouldn't go together.
But I have noticed that when I am about to have a good week without a lot of symptoms, it starts with my body getting rid of excess water (I urinate large volumes regardless of how much I am drinking and then am about two pounds lighter). I am just wondering if flares can cause you to retain water. I don't eat a lot of salt so I don't think it is diet related.

I was wondering how long it takes to recover from acute pancreatitis? It started when I was at work just over 3wks ago, I got the most excruciating pain in the upper left side of my abdomen, going into my back (the exact same pain I used to encounter when I had gallstones nearly 10 years ago, but I knew it couldn't be that, as I had my gallbladder removed.) my colleague took me to the walk in centre, where I had bloods taken and given buscopan tablets and sent home. Later that night the walk in centre rang to tell me I had pancreatitis, and that I should see my GP in the morning. I went to see my GP, she was puzzled why I hadn't already been admitted to hospital, she then arranged for me to go straight on to a ward. I was kept in for 4 days, nil by mouth on a drip, on lots of painkillers and I was given a X-ray and ultrasound scan. I was discharged and was sent home to rest, they said I would need to go back as a outpatient for a MRI, a camera test and a mrcp test. I got a sick note from my GP for 2wks, so thought I'd be ok by now? I was due to return to work yesterday, but still don't feel well, so my doctor has given me another note for 2wks. I still haven't heard from the hospital re tests, I just wondered is it normal to still be in some pain, I am also very tired? I know I shouldn't worry but I am worried about returning to work, my boss and her boss are coming to my house on Friday to discuss my attendance as it is procedure, it really is making me very anxious, I just want to get better.

My mother was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy on Sept 2nd, 1 week ago. She has left sided facial paralysis, but she also has COMPLETE left sided weakness. The left sided weakness started about 2 days after her face. The doctors have done CTs and MRIs with contrast and ruled out a stroke, but they do not know why she has left sided weakness. Has anyone else had complete left/right weakness with Bell's Palsy? Also since the diagnosis of Bell's Palsy my mother has been confused at times, her memory is horrible (can't remember her SSN now), has trouble saying what she is thinking at times, and is just NOT the same. Anyone with similar symptoms please help! The doctors are saying possible early onset of dementia??? My mother is 49. I have just never heard of all these symptoms with Bell's Palsy

My spouse was (is) an alcoholic who quit drinking after 12 years but continued smoking pot, three times a day, everyday for now going on 40 years. He had a stroke one year ago, a growth on his thyroid which has expanded into his chest cavity. The stroke caused minor cognitive impairment, forgetfulness, inability to recall numbers, words and names. Perhaps anger management issues too.
The expanded portion of the growth measures 5 X 7 X 8 cm, long, wide and front to back. Dental infections also flair up regularly. Dental Hygiene is an issue. Surgery is eminent for the growths. With the news of the needed surgery, the regular, daily pot smoking has started up again. He stops smoking for weeks at a time, proof, he believes, that he is not addicted.
There have been other health issues, blood clots in lungs, chronic cough/ throat clearing, acid reflux, shortness of breath, overweight, high carb and high fat diet.
As I list these issues, I am not sure what the question is except, am I unreasonable to think this person could turn their health around if they stop smoking weed and eat healthier? It is hard to watch this behavior.

I had a vasectomy 11 days ago. I rested, stayed off my feet mostly for a few days, used ice packs, all the ordered behaviors. My incision still hasn't healed well despite wearing compression shorts for 9 days. On about day 8 I started applying antibacterial cream and breathable sterile pad taped down over the incision to prevent infection (and was also on antibiotics for a sinus infection). There was no sign of infection, no visible sign of hematoma. But the incision remains a bit raw, like a split lip that seeps. The dissolvable stitches mostly came out within 6-9 days.
However, my right teste or epididymis is extremely sore still (I felt better from day 4-8 except when sitting a lot), swollen and riding high. When I sit upright for awhile at work, I also get an acute pain in my right inguinal area about 6" in from the hip bone. It feels like a nerve issue. It twinges and throbs when I stand and today is even making walking painful.
Any thoughts? Acute epididymitis? Sperm granuloma? Nerve damage? Normal recovery? I had a single-incision closed vas with excision, clips and cauterization.
I agree with the copious comments on the web -- the urologists need to do a FAR better job with the honest assessment of recovery. I was under the impression that this would all be largely resolved within 3-4 days. Instead, the past 3 days just keep getting worse with no clear self-diagnosis. I'm calling my urologist again tomorrow and insisting on a checkup....

Is cataflam effective in treatment of acute pain? Can I take it to relieve toothache? What dose is recommended in toothache? I used to take it to relieve headache, but I'm not sure if it would be effective in treatment of more intensive pain caused by tooth inflammation.

I am back on my full dose of HRT 1 week and am feeling myself, mentally the cloud has lifted and my energy level is back to normal. However, I now remember one reason why I was trying to wean off, this swelling, bloating and heartburn! Uggh. Any suggestions, lowering the dose seemed to get rid of it all, however, I was an emotional trainwreck! Any one out there with the same problem and found a solution? Drinking lots of water, will keep an eye on the sodium, and no spicy foods, other than that is there anything else? Will talk with my doctor in a few weeks I have a visit scheduled.

I wonder if anyone out there has experienced anything like this. Briefly I started off almost 2 years ago with what the Docs thought was Vaginal Atrophy but after taking HRT for a year or so and no change, I came off the HRT. Some months later I self diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis. Most irritating whatever the collection of symptoms are known as. Thankfully though I don't get all the symptoms at once, although there is no set pattern to them. One of the worst symptoms is urgency to wee. In ordinary circumstances, I would get this strong urge and easily get to the bathroom in time.
However last Sunday I came home from hospital following a total hip replacement! In the early hours of Monday morning I got that severe urge to wee and struggled to get out of bed. I half fell at the side of the bed in sheer panic and ended up with my right leg with the new hip holding me up as my other leg had gone out behind me. Such pain and to make it worse I was wetting myself! So shocked. Anyway I managed to sort myself out but since then I've not been able to wee properly during the day, almost like I am retaining urine. Then I have to get up twice in the night to empty my bladder. I get no normal urge to wee during the day either.
I read up about Fowler's Syndrome the other day and it pretty much describes me. It's about your sphincter not being able to relax properly. I'm wondering if the shock in the early morning last Monday has resulted in my sphincter tightening or something and it relaxes at night when I'm in bed, so I'm able to wee normally again? Anyone else experienced anything like this? I just want my waterworks to come back to normal. At least I can get out of bed easier and quicker now so that's better if nothing else.

This is the rather scary title for Viral Cold Sore Infection (EYES). I have no idea where it came from as I have never had a cold sore ever. I only know that it is extremely painful. It started 12days ago,and I just thought I had probably got a bit of gardening debris in the eye and used Optrex to soothe it, By Thursday it was very sore bloodshot and the lids were a little swollen .So I rang the GP for an emergency visit I met a locum, obviously newly qualified. I explained that there was a lot of pain under my upper lid. She duly looked at my eye which she said was perfect .so ,i tried again saying it felt as though there was a razor blade under the lid She lifted the lid and said she couldn't see anything and to come back if it got worse It did get worse over the next Three days. so Monday morning I went to where I should have gone in the first place, the Eye clinic at the hospital It opens at 8-30,I wa there at 8 as I know it gets very busy. Duly seen and given drops and a thorough looking at ,and he told me the reasons and even bothered to show me the pictures ,looked like three, ( yes I have three of the blighters squiggles gave me some eye drops and an appointment for next week. It is now Wednesday and eleven drops later....

I have to start with Cataflam therapy in a day or two and I have to say that I am not thrilled with the idea of using strong medications. I guess I am afraid of side effects, I have heard that Cataflam can cause heart attack and stroke, is that true?

My 14 year old son was in the hospital for 3 days and they could not figure out what was wrong with him. When I took him to ER, he had been vomiting and his diarrhea had blood in it. They did a CT scan and told me he had to have surgery because he had appendicitis. Then when referred to a surgeon he told us that it wasn't his appendix that his large intestine is swollen and therefore his appendix is swollen. In the meantime my son was in so much pain the throwing up stopped however the diarrhea with blood continued. They just started him on liquids and pain medication. Then, they collected 3 stool samples to test for colitis, and different bacteria's. Everything came out negative. Then a GI doctor checked my son and reviewed all test and told us that he had food poisoning and that he would have to let it take it's course. So, after 3 days they released my son from the hospital and told me to just give him Tylenol for the pain. To make sure he drinks plenty of liquids and he has to be on a lactose free diet for two weeks. Well my son is home and he is still in pain but the diarrhea has stopped. I left the hospital frustrated because they ran so many test and could not tell me what was wrong. They just said that he will be in pain for a couple of more days because his large intestine was swollen. Can you help me or give me some follow up advice because my son still does not look well and he still gets sudden pains that come and go. Could he have Crohn's disease?
