AVOID Trimethoprim - Causing Nausea, Burning Skin, Sleeplessness
Nov 29, 2008
My wife ( in her 60's) went to the NHS GP with cystitis and after a urine test, was prescribed Trimethoprim. Less than twenty four hours later she started to experience abdominal and back pain. She persisted with the Trimethoprim but the pain intensified. She said she had never felt so ill in her life and her skin was fiercely hot.We called NHS Direct and they questioned whether my wife had been to the gym, advised to drink plenty of water and to drink a particular fruit juice. She drank the juice and was almost immediately sick. Then, to help matters, the battery failed on my newly purchased thermometer.Later on Sunday night she felt really bad, couldn't sleep, couldn't drink , her body felt it was on fire and felt sick all the time. We then read the Trimethoprim leaflet that said these tablets should not be taken if there is a kidney complaint.I was on the verge of taking her diet to A&E at three o'clock in the morning.
First thing on Monday morning I got her to the surgery again and in spite of telling he receptionist how urgent the situation had become, we had to wait one and a half hours before having a consultation with ( another) doctor. By now the full urine analysis indicated a kidney disease against which Trimethoprim was ineffective and was given an alternative antibiotic - which (five days later) has now cleared the signs of the kidney problem. She has been ill for about two weeks, lost half a stone and can only eat small quantities of food - but at least she is eating again in small quantities.
After all this, I suggest the kidney infection developed very rapidly shortly after the first consultation and  Trimethoprim failed to tackle that problem. Now the side effects of the Trimethoprim have only just subsided we realise that the constant nausea, burning skin, sleeplessness,
body aches were due to the Trimethoprim. Coupled with the kidney pain, it explains why she has never felt so ill in her life. We would never entertain taking Trimethoprim ever again.
Should you suffer the symptoms of cystitis, I would recommend the full nature and extent of the problem is diagnosed without a four day delay,
the correct antibiotic is taken, don't take the advice of NHS direct without a second opinion and avoid Trimethoprim.

I really feel ill after almost three days taking Primethoprim.
Following a hip replacement in April, my pre-existing (1959!) lumbar spine problems came back worse than ever. I now have Lumbar canal stenosis.
To help the intolerable pain, I was given Baclofen, then Diazepam and nothing made any difference. I was admitted to hospital one day when I couldn't move at home and was given an injection of Ketorolac plus Tramadol and Paracetamol tablets and discharged back home where I live on my own.
Supplied with a prescription for Tramadol 50mg to a max of eight in 24 hours, the pain continued to lessen.
But then I began to have a slight pain when passing urine. After testing my urine, the GP said I have a bladder or urethral infection. She prescribed ten Trimethoprim 200mg, to run over five days, i.e. one morning and one evening.
Ever since taking the Trimethoprim 200mg I have had extreme exhaustion, nausea, mouth-breathing and panting and therefore very dry mouth, complete loss of appetite, etc, and general misery.

Was prescribed Trimethoprim for a UTI. 7 days into a 28 day course I have developed an horrendous skin rash over the entire body. Some are small blisters which are quite sore. Having not visited a doctor's surgery for three years and having never taken antibiotics before this is not a good introduction to modern medicine.....I will have to on the verge of death before I visit a GP again....

I had the mirena put in 3 months ago. Ever since I have had extremely tender breast and a very low sex drive I know that these are a few of the side affects but what I am even more concerned about is the extreme burning sensation I feel on my vulva. I have gone in many times already. Been check for STD, yeast, and bacterial infection. All came back negative. I have noticed whenever I have extremely bad cramps from the birth control is when I start feeling the burning sensation. I never felt this until I got the birth control in. Is this common? Or am I the only one who feels this extreme burning sensation when I start cramping? I plan to have it removed Tuesday I can't take this anymore.

My mom, now 65 years old, started experiencing problems with frequent urination and pain during urination. At first she thought it was just UTI and her doctor gave her antibiotics. However, it’s been 3 weeks after she finished her antibiotics and she still says she has problems with urination.
The only other medication she is taking for high cholesterol is Zocor and she’s been on it for years now, but is it possible that Zocor is causing my mom’s issues?

So I've been sexually active with the same partner for a year and a half. Recently the area around my vaginal opening has been real itchy, and after I have sex it burns down there for like an hour (kind-of like it would if you had real rough sex). This happened to me once before about 6 months ago, except I gave into the temptation to scratch the itch, and it only made it worse, and everything got all raw and painful down there. I went to the gyno and she gave me a monstat and anti-bacterial cream. Neither of which worked. The only thing that helped even a little was hydrocortisone. However, I changed birth control from the pill (Loestrin Fe) to the depo shot. The itching went away. Was on the shot for like 6 months and couldn't stand it, so I switched back to the same pill two months ago and now the itching has returned. I did not read anything about itching on the side-effects of this birth control, does anyone know what the deal is?
Things I know that it's not, so please don't suggest them.
Yeast Infection
-No smell or discharge.
-Monistat doesn't help.
-Itching on the outside NOT inside of my vagina.
STD
-Me and my partner are both clean and yes, I know that for a fact.
Sperm Allergy
-I never use condoms and have never had a problem, either vaginally or orally.
Also, I do not use any soaps to wash down there, only water, so it shouldn't be a chemical allergy either.

I'm 20 years old and been dealing with really bad acid reflux for about 6 years now. For about a year now i've been on the depo provera shot which has seemed to slow down my flare ups. When this all started i would get sick every time i started my period for me in the morning as soon as i get up. Since the depo shot i've been getting sick every three months right before my next shot. These flare up usually lasted about a week and a half at most(which really sucks cuz it affects my life in every way imaginable). My symptoms when im sick is usually nausea, vomiting, burning in my stomach, burning in my throat, fatigue, sharp lower pains, and sometimes it gets so bad because i'm scared to get sick i have panic attacks. When i was 14 doctors found an ulcer cover 90% of my stomach. That was seen doing a endoscopy. I was still having issues shortly after leaving the hospital, so talked with my doctor and had a laparoscopy scheduled. Did that and they found i had built up scar tissue on my female parts cant remember every detail as its been a long time ago and i'm always sick when they finally want to try something. So anyways they also found a cyst near my belly button. It seemed as if their findings was not a big deal. So down the road still getting sick i had my appendix removed, and that didn't change a thing. I've had numerous ultra sounds, x rays, blood test, cat scans and i'm probably forgetting more. I'm just hoping someone will have a possible answer since i been too more doctor i can count on both my hands and toes and that haven't a clue.. Just to put it out there i am not a liquor drinker, i smoke cigarettes and marijuana. I also do not drink caffeine anymore for the past 3 years basically. !

The top of my Penis is slightly red and burns as if the skin is irritated. Sometimes this will go away but for the last three months it has returned. I have been tested for UTI, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. I had Urine tests and all came back negative. My Doctor said that my Prostate was congested from lack of sex. The problem is I am worried about having sex for fear of passing this on. my first question is about the accuracy of the urine tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea. I was tested a second time in the Urologists office but I think that was just for a general infection.

I have been diagnosed with Chronic Prostatitis and prescribed a 28 day course of 200 mg Trimethoprim tablets along with 2.5mg of Oxybutynin for the same period. Started the treatment several days ago having taken 4 tablets of each drug. There are no immediate side effects apart from a slight dizzyness. Having read the posts about the bad reactions to this drug,it has given me great concern over the long period I have to take these tablets. Are there any other readers to this website who have taken this drug for the same period of about a month ?

I have had burning skin, in several places, all over my body. It feels like I've been badly burned. it gets worse as the day progresses. I have tried topical treatments, but the pain is on the inside, therefore topicals have no effect. I have been to specialists, had several blood tests, now my doctor is starting to experiment on me with the popular drugs for fibromyalgia. Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc. I am taking Horizant (which is Gabapentin), and I am going to give it a few weeks to see if it helps. At this point, I would do anything to get relief. Does anyone know of other treatments for my affliction?

Can anyone recommend a drug that is really effective for the physical symptoms of anxiety? In a way I can cope with the mental aspects but I am plagued by creeping, burning, on-fire skin and restless legs, it's like being plugged into an electrical socket all the time. Unless I'm actually physically active (and I can't be all day, it's exhausting) this sensation drives me crazy... the only relief is self-harm which I really try not to do. Any tried-and-tested remedy out there?

I have a horrendous rash on my feet, upper arms, back and hands. I have been taking Omeprazole for about 6 weeks, and am due to see a consultant in a few days. As no one had mentioned a rash to me, I assumed it was a heat rash, as I have a habit of warming my feet by the fire, but the rash has got much worse, and now I have ENORMOUS blisters on my big toes and small ones elsewhere on my feet and hands. I have phoned the GP surgery as I see this is listed as a possible side effect, and was told to stop taking the omeprazole which I did yesterday. So far there is no improvement, but it is only 24 hours, so I am hoping there will be some improvement very soon. I have also lost my sense of taste and smell which may be due to a bad cold, but I have a very dry mouth and a horrid taste in it when I wake up in the morning. This is also a listed side effect. The doctor I spoke to seemed to think the rash IS due to the omeprazole. Incidentally, I took lapromazole for 2 weeks previously, but it gave me dreadful diarrhoea, so the consultant changed me to omeprazole. I will post another message on here when I have seen the consultant.

Over the last few months I've been randomly getting nauseated. It usually lasts a day or two and only has actually caused me to vomit a few times. However recently it has become more severe, and more common and even more recently has become paired with an uncomfortable dizziness and weakness in my legs. My mother believed it was morning sickness so I took a pregnancy test which proved negative and haven't missed any periods in the 3 months since I was last sexually active so I'm fairly certain I am not pregnant.

Will the body burn through fat reserves BEFORE burning muscle proteins for energy during an extended fast? I've fasted many times, from a single day up to a month, and remain physically active during the fast.
