During the summer, my engine started this horrible screaching sound when I flipped on the AC. The sound would intensify as I accelerated up to driving speed then stop. The sound would return when I stop at a light. Early on, the sound would go away once the engine was warmed up. How do I get rid of this horrible sound? The car and AC all work fine except for the annoying noise.
View 4 RepliesOne day my VSC, Traction and check engine lights came on. Nothing seems wrong with the car. Took it to a mechanic, they said many things popped up on their computer (emissions, etc, including replacing computer). The car has 48k on it, the warranty ran out at 39k.
View 15 RepliesFor about the last 6 months or so I get a audio static for about 10-12 seconds every time I turn on the engine. Ditto after I turn off. I am using factory speakers, the head unit was replaced by previous owner. There has been no issue with the audio other than this one. I do live in an extreme weather area: +35C to -40C, but I don't think that should have anything to do with this. Is this a bad ground issue? In that case where do I find the ground cable and how to properly make the ground connection? Or is this something else?
View 2 RepliesI installed a new Goodyear alternator belt on our 07 Yaris couple months back and it started squealing after the first day and only during a cold start. My past experience has taught me that it's normally due to a loose belt (when belt is new) so I tightened it just a bit. After 3 days it started squealing again. I've increased the tension on the belt three times now and the squealing has not gone away. It's only on cold starts and only for about 1 minute. If memory serves me right there is no tensioner for the alternator belt. It would appear that it doesn't matter how tight the belt is, it still squeals on cold starts.
View 4 RepliesI have a horrendous squealing noise coming from one of my rear wheels. Sounds bad at low speeds, changes frequency to higher pitch when going faster. The sound isn't constant (some times nothing), other times loud as hell. Sometimes gets worse when turning, then nothing when straightened out. When breaking, sometimes the sound gets worse, then goes away. It doesn't sound like a bad wheel bearing (had one go before- more of a growly noise). This sound is too high pitched. Also, checked the brake pads (plenty of life left), and rotors are good too.
View 5 RepliesThe front end of my Toyota Echo has been squealing but only when it's either in drive or in 2nd gear and only when the brake pedal is pressed, once I release the brake pedal it only squeals for a few seconds then once the car moves faster than 5 miles an hour it goes away.. I completely replaced the suspension late last year. I just replaced the belt a few minutes ago and it still does this. I noticed that when the car is off and in park, when I shake the car forward and backward I hear a slight squeal coming from the front. I think it might be the engine mounts and or the transmission mount. What could it be?
View 12 RepliesI have a 2003 Elantra that is squealing when turned on, it also does it when steering especially when turning right though much less when the car is moving.
You can check the video out to see what I'm talking about. The car had already been driven when I filmed this so no squeal when I first turn it on.
The power steering belt seem very tight, no wobbling, the alternator belt has more give but I can't tell whether it's too loose or not. The power steering fluid is dark, I don't know if that's normal or not and the reservoir has lots of dark-ish residue all over it. I'll have to look tomorrow during day light to see whether a hose may be leaking

Just wondering what kind of fix the car needs, it's a clunker we drive on short distances but it's starting to squeal a lot , and the other day when one of us drove it it started to smell like burnt rubber, and there was even a bit of smoke coming out of the front hood, we haven't been able to replicate that so far. The oil is good, the oil cap is clean no gas smells.
When I turn my wheel to the right, there is a scraping noise. Like, metal on metal. The more I turn, the more intense the sound. Does not affect driving performance, but it does sound problematic. As I turn the wheel, it starts making a scrape-scrape-scrape noise. It sounds like it could be a shield or wheel bearing, but I'm really not sure.
View 1 RepliesI have owned my 2008 yaris sedan since new. With the temp knob turned to full cold, the air coming in (all vents I think) is always warmer than the outside air. This is annoying; I am forced to turn on the air conditioner even when the outside air is just right. I suspect that an internal flapper valve of some sort is not seating properly and is leaking warm air.

View 11 RepliesI had the car checked for an odd noise that I've been noticing once the engine is warm. Almost like a humming or low pitch squealing. It's noticeable at idle and low speed from inside and outside the car. Very annoying considering the thing is a month old. Any way, I spent nearly 4 hours waiting and they came up with no solutions. Not a clue, a guess, nothing. The car is still driving normally and i needed it for tomorrow so I didn't keep it over as they suggested. The service manager said he hasn't seen anything like it, but also admitted he knew very little about the '10s. great.
View 10 RepliesIve got 20K miles on my car now and I noticed a weird noise in the engine bay at certain rpm's. Between 1800 to 2300, parked or driving. It sounds like a bad bearing, like when you spin a bearing with compressed air it squeals. So i decided to investigate this further.
What Ive found is that the top timing belt small roller bearing is the culprit.
My friend with the same car has the same noise with the same mileage!
My cars engine is all stock except for the VWR air filter and Forge DV.

I have about 83k miles on my Accent. It was undriven for about three months due to a blocked situation with the local Department of Transportation. I've changed the oil and he seems to be driving fine, but right after starting the car, there's a squealing that comes from the engine block as I apply pressure to the accelerator. The sound goes away after a minute of acceleration, upon breaking, or after driving for a while. Also, when shifting from reverse to drive, the steering feels a little stiff. Is this a loose belt problem? Do I need to replace said belt? Or is there a more extensive problem with the power steering pump?

It always makes this sound when I first start and it is wet outside. After a few minutes the sound stops, presumably after whatever is squealing dries up.
I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L truck. Originally, there was a squealing sound (which has now turned into chirping) coming from the engine, so I replaced the serpentine belt. That didn't do it. So upon research online, I preceded to check all the pulley wheels for wobble, grinding sounds. The only thing I found of concern was the a/c compressor pulley. It was making a slight grinding sound, so I thought maybe I'll buy a shorter serpentine to bypass the a/c altogether. That didn't fix it.
The chirping only happens when I put the truck in drive or reverse, and increases when I accelerate. Sometimes as I'm driving it'll stop momentarily until I either take my foot off the gas or accelerate even more. I've checked everything I could inside the engine compartment, without taking anything apart. I've had my wife put the truck in gear so that I can try to locate the sound, but I've had no luck. I don't want to take the truck in, until I can identify the problem, and maybe even fix it myself.
Back in September '12, I was on the freeway and merging quickly into the fastlane/passing lane on the freeway-- third gear, near 80mph. Going for fourth gear was a brief misshift into second that apparently happens often with cars with the 1NZ-FE.
Because of that over-rev, I've since had an annoying tick that goes with the engine revs. It's been going strong regardless for over 10,000 miles, but it's frustrating nonetheless. Compression seems fine on all cylinders, and according to a shop I'm not primed to believe, the shims for the valves are fine and these engines "always sound like that." My video begs to differ.
For those who've maybe had the same sound, what's your take? I've heard of stretched timing chains/chain slack, water pump, clutch issues, etc., but want to narrow it down.

I've got error P0440 on my 2001 Echo about a week ago and cleared it, then I got it again today. It happened while driving, I was switching from 4th to 5th and the check engine lit up.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2009 Scion xD and when I am idling in D or P, my car sounds like a diesel engine. It makes this propeller kind of sound on the driver side and it is worse when I am stopped or idling, but does not go away when I am driving. It has about 76,000 miles and I moved from AZ to CA, not that I think that makes much of a difference, but the high heat in AZ can cause problems for cars. The heater core went out in the fall of last year and I just had all 4 struts replaced. I really don’t want to have to spend too much more on the car to be honest and hope this is just a simple issue.

I took it in to be looked at and the mechanic said they couldn't get a code, couldn't get a "good read" on what was wrong. They said I could take the car back (but they couldn't give me an inspection sticker) and drive it for a couple of days and if the light comes on, take it back to them. If the light doesn't come on after a few days, they will give me the sticker. I can't believe my car is going to act any differently than it has for the last few months -- light comes on sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. Shouldn't the mechanic be able to tell what's wrong.
have a 2005 Scion with about 60,000 miles.
I started up my 2004 v8 phaeton with 49k mies for the first time in two weeks and it made an awful squealing sound that seems to be coming from the front of the engine. it also seems to be idling very roughly, this may or may not be related to the noise. it has never made this sound before and i am scared to drive it until i get an idea of what it is. i am afraid it is the timing belt and the i will ruin the whole engine on the way to the dealership.
