When driving my 2003 Volvo XC70, it sounds as if I am driving on nobby mud tires. The sound (rrrrrrrrrrrr) gets faster and slower with the cars acceleration and deceleration. I know that the sound isn't caused by the tires because I am running on Micheline Harmony tires which are fairly quite. I am concerned that it may be a gear going bad.
View 5 RepliesI went and got an alignment and my tires were rotated and after I started driving it for a little I heard the noise of the tires. There is one stipulation here: I was cut off while driving around 40mph and had to slam on my brakes for about 3 seconds (two days after getting the alignment and don't remember if the noise was there before - I also hadn't driven the car fast though), so I'm unsure if this is part of the noise. But, it's one week later and when I'm driving over ~20+, the noise just gets to be louder.
The best way to explain it is that I can hear what would seem is the tires simply running on the ground and it just gets louder as I drive faster and dimmer as I drive slower. The tires have about 15k on them and are rated for 140k, and I've rotated them a few times before.
Also, my car is a 2005 Volvo XC70 with around 140k on the odometer.
I have a 2003 Volvo XC70 with 87K miles on it. I have kept it serviced. For the last few years I have had an intermittent problem with the engine light coming on saying I am having engine performance problems, that I can (sometimes) alleviate by tightening the gas cap. I make a point of tightening the cap til it clicks when I fill up, so I don't know why this happens. Also, sometimes it happens and I can feel the engine slowing down.
It tends to happen more on very hot days when it has been sitting outside of my office building in the sun all day (there is no shade to park). I have a 10 minute ride home and by the time I am 5 minutes into the drive the light comes on. When I get home I pop the fuel lid and tighten the gas cap (even though it feels plenty tight) and by the next morning the light is often off . My dealer has no idea what is going on, but there is something wrong.
While on a recent 800 mile trip, by the end of it (on interstate driving) a roaring noise was coming from the from tires. A quick inspection showed nothing amiss. It's a 2001 Volvo XC70 with 108,000 miles. The Michelin tires were new at 100k. No shimmering or shaking at higher/lower speeds or changing lanes. Just the annoying new roar as the car gets going over 20mph.
View 7 RepliesMy XC70 makes a weird whistling type noise in heavy rains that last a long time. It doesn't do it in light rains, or rains that are heavier but don't flood roads or collect water on the shoulder or slow lanes, only the really heavy, hard to find the road type.
There are no warning lights when it happens, turning off everything, except the car and windshield wipers, doesn't work. Pulling off the road, works after about 30 seconds, but then we start again, and it continues. This is only happening during really heavy rains, is scary, and I don't have a clue what it's doing or why nor does my mechanic.
We have had a 2004 Volvo XC70 for two years now, problem-free. But recently we experienced a strange, new thing. We were driving in a very heavy rain in Maine (during the hurricane) and suddenly the engine began screaming...not at all like a loose belt or bad bearing, but really loud, seeming from right front. We stopped, no idots lights came on. Began again, soon the same thing. Stopped again, waited, then took off again, with rain lessening. No further problems the rest of the drive back to Vermont. But now, we occasionally have the screaming, only briefly and ONLY when it rains. It concerns us a bit.

We pulled off the road, turned the car off. When restarted the sound was gone, but then returned again when driving in heavy rain. Any clues as to what is causing this noise and if it needs attention?

This usually occurs while driving a few miles after first starting the vehicle and happens only once. We've check the car for any plastic bottles that may have been lodged under the seat or inside the car and no bottles were found. Where this sound is coming from. There seems to be no mechanical problems associated with it, just this popping sound which is quite loud.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2007 volvo S40 T5 AWD with 25,000 miles. When driving at slower speeds and I let off the gas, I hear a "clunking" noise similar to driving over a lose manhole cover. The car makes a very slight jerk as well. I notice this as well between 2nd and 3rd gear, but not just then. I am thinking transmission problem, but don't know and want some info before heading to the dealer.

I drove it, from idle to 1/2 throttle it drives fine cruises on up too a hunski pretty quick, but from half to full there's a hissing sound coming from somehere under the hood and while its hissing it feels like the turbo doesn't want you to go any faster. Also from a stop light if you give it full throttle it wont shift out of first unless you let off the gas.
Also when in park if you rev the engine to like 4-5k and let off, very very slowly does it drop back down to idle. The tracs off and abs lights are on! I'll hook my code reader up tonight to see if i can pull any codes.
I have owned several 7.3's and I have never encountered this issue. I recently picked up a 2001 7.3 with 200k miles on it. When I bought it I knew the glow plugs were going, I also knew it accelerated slow. I went ahead and replaced the plugs, valve gaskets, and added a heavy duty glow plug relay, along with an oil change, and fuel filter.
For some reason, the truck just dose not accelerate very fast at all, significantly slower than any 7.3l I have owned in the past. It appears that I shift at about 3000 rpms and it takes a while to get up to speed. I would like to get it mechanically sound before I restore the body. I was thinking it was the ebpv? but what else could it be?
Ok - I admit, I don't have a good description of what's going on, but it's not normal. When I accelerate slowly, or go up a hill, I'm hearing a "rattling" sort of noise that did not used to be there. I have heard it also when slowly decelerating.
I need to crawl under and look, but my big concern is I'm about to go on a 2000 mile trip with a small horse trailer. Could this be a festering major engine, transmission, or otherwise problem?

Sounds like it's coming from the front. I noticed a few months ago my inner passenger CV boot was cracked, put motor mount spacers in which should have hopefully brought that axle up to okay standards. My initial reaction is to say the howling is from that CV joint however it's very odd it only happens after 35 and when I'm not heavy accelerating or deaccelerating- only when holding the car at a constant speed.
This also came after doing the TDI 5th. I notice it a little bit after passing 35mph in 3rd but really can hear it in 4th/5th when the engine revs drop. Am I right in thinking CV boot? Or transmission internal?

In the last few days, a new sound has appeared. It is hard to describe, sometimes squeaky, sometimes sound like a vacuum leak or air bypass.
It seems to steering related in conjunction with acceleration/deceleration. It only occurs when the wheel is being turned to the left, whether for a left turn or returning to center from a right turn. The noise seems to come from the center/center left of the firewall area.
It only does this while in motion, I couldn't replicate the issue with the car running but in Park.
What would cause the clock in our 2004 XC70 to change on its own and to race through time upon starting?

View 4 RepliesI have a 2002 V70XC, and all of the dashboard instruments have completely gone out, no speedometer, gas guage, odometer, etc. My Volvo mechanic doesn't want to touch this, he says that the whole thing needs to be replaced, and I should go to a dealer. I can't believe that this is that bad?
View 1 RepliesFor the past several weeks, my daughter reports that she has to put her foot almost all the way to the floor to get the brakes to work. The brakes do not have an effect until her foot is 1-2 inches from the floor. It usually happens after she has been driving for a while without pressing the brakes. I’ve driven the car numerous times but haven’t been able to replicate the problem. Her commute is approximately 10 miles each way in stop and go traffic. The car is a Volvo xc70 with 200k+ miles. I've had it looked at by a mechanic who didn't find anything but it's continuing to happen. I'm suspicious that it may be a master cylinder problem and concerned about complete brake failure -- should I be?
View 7 RepliesI have a 1999 Volvo XC 70 with 152,000 miles. Last Wednesday after driving it about 3 miles and stopping it, i restarted it and the following 4 warning lights all came on at once: Brake, ABS, check engine and the shift arrow light came on and was flashing. By the time i got home (about 3 more miles), both the ABS and Brake lights had turned off (and haven't come back on). When i started it the following morning, the flashing arrow light was also off (and has not come back on). The only light that remains on a week later is the check engine light. The car performed that day perfectly, and has been performing perfectly even since, and there are no weird noises, smells, etc. It has been a fantastic car for the 6-7 years i have owned it and it has been very well maintained. Last Wednesday it was cold outside (25-30), but not terribly cold and this car has seen way colder weather and has done just fine.
View 2 RepliesI've checked the wheel bearings, lug nuts and wheel balance. Sometimes the car will shimmy or vibrate not in the steering wheel and not all the time. It will vibrate for a day or two, then nothing, then vibrate again. It was not vibrating today, then I took some curves hard at 35 mph or so and it started a medium level vibration. This vibration started a day or two after the ABS, traction control, and check engine lights came on while nearly completing a 10 hour drive. I have described this to a number of mechanics and the fact that the vibration goes away has them stumped.
View 8 RepliesAbout a year ago, my Volvo XC70 started hesitating as it increased speed from 0 to about 30mph. After the hesitation it jerked forward. This problem is worse if the gas tank is full. I took the car to a highly recommended transmission garage and they said it wasn't the transmission but the throttle pro-actor and I would have to go to a dealer for that because Volvo has proprietary rights on the computer in the car. I took it do the dealer but the problem persists. My regular mechanic is doing some research about the problem but I would like to know if this sounds like a complete transmission overhaul or if only part of the transmission or a connection needs replacing. I would like to be prepared before I go to the mechanic.
