Volvo - V70 :: 1999 - Loud Engine Rattle All Of A Sudden
Jan 8, 2014
I have a loud engine rattle like there's a golf ball bouncing around in the engine. So far the mechanics have no idea where the knocking is coming from. Here's a video of the sound at idle. If you attempt to drive (or rev above 1500rpm) the sound becomes very loud and is then obviously undrivable.
It's a 1999 Volvo V70, 2.4L, non-turbo, automatic has 260,000km or 162,000mi

Listen for the fuel injectors and the lifters. Under that there is a low, steady Knock. There is also a louder bang that is irregular. It sounds like I'm hitting the camera or the car but it comes from within the engine! First it's irregular then catches up with the engine speed. What those noises might be?
I was just beginning a road trip and all the fluids were checked. Engine has appeared to be fine for years. I pretty much only use Shell silver grade gas.I had filled up the tank 100 km prior.I had just changed the oil and filter 200km prior.Symptoms appeared as I was pulling on to the highway for the first time that day.
As I accelerated on to the on ramp (with four passengers) the oil pressure light came on.5km after that I thought I heard a low oil ticking so I pulled over to check and as I did, the engine really started knocking and whining. Checked the oil and it was full and later I found out there was pressure. Coolant was okay too. Turned the car on and oil pressure light never came back on. No check engine light. As I tried to get off the highway the knocking was so bad I could barely drive it. Probably should have left it. Got off the highway and called a tow truck.
The mechanic has drained the oil and found metal filings. He checked the timing belt and it is fine and hasn't slipped. No idea yet where the sound is coming from.

I have a 2007 XC90 3.2 RWD with around 112,800 miles.
On acceleration, there is a rattle (not a valve knocking) that gets quieter once a steady cruise is achieved. At idle in gear, a very quiet rattle can be heard. When transmission is slipped into neutral, the rattle goes away. The engine shifts normally, accelerates normally and gas mileage is steady at around 20.5 mpg (mixed city and highway). I am using 93 octane gas. This week the check engine light came on.

1995 Geo Metro. 133 thousand miles. Loud rattle from engine, massive loss of power at lower RPM, low vacuum pressure, not blown head gasket (ruled that out), going to replace all vacuum hoses, advanced vacuum switch under distributor, and bypass catalytic converter, any other options I'm missing?

I own a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD. I have noticed that usually when I am driving and it starts to rain heavily, there is a loud siren sound coming from the engine area. This sound stays till it doesn't stop to rain. Also, if I don't step on the accelerator, the sound goes away. I have taken it to the dealership a couple of times but haven't been able to replicate the sound.

My Dads 92 Volvo's engine is making a knocking noise and I'm wondering what the possible causes are. He doesn't take that great care of it but it didn't over heat or anything. It sounds like it is making a loud knocking or clicking noise directly from the engine when you accelerate. It still runs but definitely has a lack of power.

My 2008 Volvo s60 did this in not one but two directions Volvo sent a corporate engineer but he found no problems but the also refused to check the ECM even after I insisted that this car always had low voltage issues...

I have a 2012 Camry SE with about 30k on it. I've always been a huge Toyota fan but I've had some interesting things happen with my first new car that has me questioning quality. I've had a mouse nest in the cabin air filter with the dead mouse laying in the engine bay (not a toyota issue), a loud rattling exhaust/engine rattle when I start the car, and the common interior creaks that I've been reading about.
However I've noticed a noise coming from somewhere behind the dash, maybe the instrument panel area that has been very annoying. It occurs at highway speeds usually above 65mph and it's kind of like a quick tapping. Very faint but definitely noticeable.
Its not the sunroof because, unfortunately I have that issue also lol. It took me a while to narrow it down to behind the dash but that's as far as I can get because I can't search for it while I'm driving. I'm not very picky but I do like to drive in silence sometimes and listen to the sounds of the engine/tranny shifting (weird I know) but that dashboard noise has been ruining it.

Experienced this (Loud engine knock or rattle noise) regarding the service bulletin (T-SB-0010-12)? If so, did you take your vehicle in for service?

Trying to find any information on what's happening with my 2008 2.2 Diesel Santa Fe ... Been driving fine until I pulled up at a set of traffic lights yesterday and started hearing a loud rattle- knocking coming from the engine at idle.
Put it in gear and drove and it goes away. When at idle if you rev the car it goes away.
Mechanic seems to think it could be clutch as it vibrates the gearbox, but sound seems to be more prominent around the engine, my thoughts were maybe a loose timing tensioner.
Clutch replacement is very expensive.

I have a 97 GTP. When I am at idle, I get a very loud rattling noise coming from the drive belt area of the engine. The noise goes away when you rev the engine up, but returns immediately when idling. I removed the supercharger belt assembly, and then noise still occurs. This just started tonight out of the blue, and It is extremely loud.

Took my 850 Turbo out on the freeway today, and when I put the pedal to the floor on the onramp there was a very disconcerting loss of power just as the turbo was really kicking in. No issue under mild to medium boost, but when pushed hard there is a short loss of power/hesitation, almost like a backfire, then boosts again, then the same power loss until I back off on the gas. Cannot get full boost without this happening.

I bought a 2004 F250 super duty 4x4 with the 6.0 a couple weeks ago and have a few questions. Hopefully all of these things are normal, but I thought I would ask you experienced drivers.
1) Occasionally while driving when I lift off the accelerator pedal I can hear a sort of loud rattle under the hood. I assume this is the turbo shutting down? Is that normal?
2) 4x4 and locking hubs... I have the 4x4 hi and low switch on the dash. Do I need to also manually lock the hubs to go into 4x4? After reading the manual it seems like I can just turn the dash switch and they should automatically lock, but I'm not sure. The hubs are not marked, but going by the pictures in the manual I think I know which is "lock" and which position is "auto" or off.
3) Front wheels hop at full turn. I expected wheel hop in 4x4 or with the hubs locked, but even in 2WD with the hubs in the auto position the tires still "hop" or knock a bit at sharp turns. Is this normal?

1 year ago bought a 2003 Ford Ranger 5-speed manual. For last two months I occasionally get a loud clang from the rear, with short locking of rear wheels and sudden lunge when accelerating from stop. I can also get occasional clang when cruising down city streets in fourth gear. Tonight when accelerating from stop wheels locked and no sudden kick in and lunge forward. Finally got truck to go and crawled home. I've taken the truck into my mechanic twice, but of course it performs perfectly normal when they drive it. And no, it isn't just the way I drive. It's an occasional problem but getting more serious.

My '99 V6 30V w/ 59K miles has started to make a strange noise. It is quiet until warmed up, then the sound starts. I suspect something emmisions-wise is activating after warmup.
It sounds like a rattle, or gulping, about 2-3 hz, fluid or air I can't decide. It does increase w/ throttle, but not proportionally - it just speeds up a bit. volume is pretty steady, it doesn't get louder.
So, I don't think it's in the valve train. Perhaps intake? Is there something that might be "flapping" in there, some sort of proportioning valve? (mine is NOT a VR6, it's the 30-valve Audi engine).
I think it's "sucking" related, if that makes sense. I checked the PCV pipes, a little gunky but clear; no cracks found. The combi-valve is working, tho there was a vacuum leak in its line which has been fixed. The secondary air-injector motor runs normally - the sounds isn't realted to it running.
I've looked all over, it is not something vibrating nearby in the engine compartment. The engine runs fine otherwise, but I suspect something is on the way out. I don't think it's water pump either, since the noise isn't tied to engine rpm.

I have a 2003 Volvo C70 that I've owned since 2004. In February, I ordered struts for the front with all the trimmings, (spring seat, strut mount, bump stop, etc) from FCP Euro. The struts were Sachs 553-058, which are supposed to be as good if not better than the original struts. I installed them myself, meticulously following the instructional video FCP publishes on YouTube. Installation went very smoothly. Afterwards, I noticed a rattle/knock coming from the right front when I drove over a bump or rough area.
I took it to a local tire/brake place that I have a good bit of confidence. After driving the car, the guy says, "You gotta bad strut!" Called FCP. They sent me a new strut. I installed it and sent the other back. Sounded a LOT better—for about two weeks. Now I am hearing the sound on both sides. I took it to a very reputable Volvo mechanic, I have used since the warranty expired. He drove it, confirmed the sound was not normal. We put it on the lift and he checked everything on the front suspension and was stumped. He said there was nothing wrong with my installation, no problem with the suspension.
Okay, FCP has an unconditional satisfaction guarantee, so I could replace these with a more expensive strut for say $50 more, but is the problem with the struts? I would hate to have to do this installation again and still have the same problem.

I changed my rear brakes this past weekend and noticed that since then I have an odd sound when I drive off.
So I will park the car and engage the ebrake. I will then return to the car after a while (overnight etc) and disengage the ebrake, then put it in reverse / drive and when i give it gas to drive off, BAAAM - it sounds like you hit something or ran over something. I can stop the car fully and drive off - nothing. If I dont use the ebrake - nothing.
What in the world could this be??? It is quite loud and really scared that crap out of me - like you hit another car or something.

I have a 1981 240 Wagon with 182K miles on it. When I reach 45-55 MPH on the highway the car starts to hum and roar. It is not horrible by any means but it has gotten louder over time and now the car kind of vibrates. At 60mph it stops and quiets down. Now I am unsure if I have a turbo or not and I feel like that could just be the turbo mechanism kicking in but I am not sure.

When I 'hit the gas' I hear a loud clunk or short scratching noise (definitely metal) before the engine starts revving up. I've researched the issue a bit but found no concrete answers. Motor mounts, timing, transmission issue? No one thing seems to cause it as far as I can tell.
I got my '92 Volvo 240 Non-Turboalmost a year ago and haven't really thought much of the noise, but I'm coming up on a 500mi trip to Northern California. I want to make sure it's in tip-top shape before I leave. [IMG]

I drove the family to the lake yesterday and returned with no problems at all. This morning I started the car and there was a really loud rattle from under the hood. I popped the hood and listened more closely. It sounded like it was coming from the top-end. When it shut down it seemed to whine a bit and kind of ground to a halt, almost like a belt was rubbing something. I tried to start again. Now it turns over but doesn't start. The oil's maybe .5-quart low, none on the driveway underneath and no strange smells.
I'm going to have it towed to the dealer today. I'm a bit concerned though I do have the security lockout feature. I also noticed the last time I washed it that both tail lights had moisture inside the lens and my power lock buttons are bubbling up. This one may take a while. I'll update as I know more.

Yesterday the car was fine going to work and most of the way home. It was raining pretty hard and I went through a large puddle then right after I started to hear a pretty loud noise. It sounded like it was coming from the middle of the car, more so in between the main seats and was vibrating my seat a little bit. It only happened on mediumish acceleration, during low acceleration it wasn't there at all. Also the car still felt fine. Then when I got off main road I was on a street that wasn't super wet cause of all the trees, the sound stopped.
Here is a link to the sound, you might have to turn up the volume because it is a little low. You can hear it best around 14 sec: [URL].....
So today I jacked it up to see if I could see anything and I found oil all around the haldex stuff. Here are some pics I took of the leak. There is also a bright yellow spot you can see through a hole. Not sure what that means. The haldex service was done, maybe 5-10k miles ago, I'd have to look it up to figure out exact time. In one of the pics you might notice black silicone around one of the plugs, this was because when I did get it serviced for the first time, someone before stripped the bolt so the mechanic put that around it to hold it in. It still looks like it is on there pretty well so I don't think that is the issue.
This isn't a big deal but I noticed this plastic part isn't bolted down, I really don't think the noise would be from this but posted just in case.
