I have a 1998 Volvo S70 with 140k. 2.5 litre 5cyl automatic. For sometime now my lifters have been making noise especially at start up. I'm up to date on my oil servicing using Volvo filters and a 20-50w motor oil ( as recommended by my mechanic ) but still the noise continues. In the past I have used additives to the oil but still the problem continues. Maybe I'm using the wrong one.

I did not use the car for 2 months while I was away.
I had an oil change done last week for my 03 trailblazer, and was getting valve tapping on startup after sitting 8 hours in the cold, it goes away after a few minutes. I stopped by today, and they looked through the maintenance records and noticed a new i.e., supersedes the old filter filter model had been used, they are going to pick up the old model filter and swap it out. I can get the part numbers tomorrow, but in 154 k I have never had such a noise. And it started day 1 after the oil change. 5w 30 as specs and level was full.
View 19 RepliesSometimes I'll walk my wife out to the garage in the morning when she is leaving for work. When she starts up her 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan FWD sto n go I hear a clicking noise for about 2 seconds. To me it sounds like the lifters prior to getting the oil delivery. I was wondering if that was going to eventually cause some engine damage and also if there is a problem with the oil pump or something like that. Is this a problem that I should check into or is this normal for this van. We hit a deer several months ago and the whole front end was wasted. I don't remember hearing this clicking sound when the van was newer.

I have been letting my car warm up for about 15 minutes before driving because I cannot stand that noise. When I bought it there was a lifter making a tap tap tap. Its not all the time or consistent which makes me feel its a failed lifter as opposed to a rocker arm that is loose. Ive tried the "stuff" in the oil. Seafoam, marvel mystery, etc with no luck. So this coming winter Im going to break it down and replace the lifter.
First question. I havent put a stethoscope on it or used the "hose to ear" method to track down which one it is. Im pretty sure its the right bank in the front. Will it be obvious which one it is when I get it broken down?
Next. At 120k miles should I be worried about the other lifters? Ive never had one fail on anything I own and hardly ever hear them on other cars. I pretty much thought that hydraulic lifters were failproof anymore. Should I be worried about the others?
Next next, do I need to be worried about damage to the pushrod and or rocker arm? Should I be prepared to replace those as well? Finally anything else to be concerned about or consider?
my 1992 960 wagon with 332K miles today started making a moaning noise when making a significant turn at low speed. At first it seemed to be only when I was accelerating but if that was true, it now is doing it at any low-speed big turn. Tonight, turning around in the driveway, it added what I call juddering during the turn. So naturally I am concerned.If it is something as minor as power steering fluid I might trust a local gas station to fill it up, but probably not any more than that. (There used to be a dealer about 45" away, but they seem to be gone now, and the closest one is hours away. I am 250 miles and one week away from my own trusted mechanic, so I hope it is something like fluid!).I haven't noticed any puddles on the driveway where it is parked, but I suppose it could leak out only when the engine is on and the car is moving.

View 1 RepliesI own a b5.5 2.8l 30v v6. Today I went to get in the car and on start up for the first time in 3 days it started shaking a lot and making a small rumbling noise, sort of like a cylinder misfire. This isn't the first time its happened. I tried searching this up and everything seems to point toward the fuel injectors. In this past 6 months my average mpg has dropped from about 20 to 16.
I am guessing it is this, but someone also said it might be a cylinder misfire. What exactly is causing this? Also in the 1 year of owning it, it makes sort of a diesel sounding noise in the engine. Some people have told me it might just be the valves that need to be adjusted but I have no clue.

View 2 RepliesMy 1990 Volvo is making a terrible noise at about 20-30 miles per hour. It only lasts a few minutes but it sounds like a plane taking off underneath the passenger seat (wagon). Had the muffler replaced, but it didn't fix the noise. I also have a high pitched noise at freeway speeds.
View 2 RepliesI have a 1992 850 Estate (wagon) which has been making a funny noise when driving. I cannot locate it. The noise only happens when driving, I have never herd it when stationary. Most often when cold but not exclusively. I have examined all the items attached to the engine driven by the serpentine belt all run smoothly. The belt was changed just after I bought it.
I have checked the wheel arches to see if the tyres rub but no. The suspension is fairly new with new anti-roll bar links fitted for last MOT. The noise sounds like a dry bearing and is a combination of a rub and a screech, there is no loss of coolant but I suspect the water pump or one of the tensioning rollers to be at fault. The last owner told me that the belt had been changed a few months before I bought the car (off Ebay) but he did not say anything about the rollers or water pump and I did not ask.
One other point is that when I bought the car I had to add a full 5 litres of oil to the sump due to their being no oil on the dip stick. Since then the engine has run well (good engineering) but this noise is happening and as I have said it is driving me nuts.

Recently I overhauled the engine put new rod bearing and had it bored and honed. As well as new pistons. when i first started it, it ran fairly good except for the tappets making noise but i thought this was normal. after 40 miles the tappets were still making noise and the oil light began flickering. I replaced the oil pan o rings with no luck. i also took the pump apart to check that and still nothing. I have a feeling a main bearing might have been put in the wrong spot. What should i do next to confirm this? what should i do from this point on?
View 4 RepliesWe just bought a 2011 XC90 in Jan 2011. About a week ago we noticed that when you are using the brake and turning a corner there is a weird noise coming from the front end. It only does it at low speeds. It doesn't do it if you turn and you are not pressing the brakes. You can also feel it in the brake pedal as well. I hope this makes sense. We love this car and really don't want to regret that we bought it. Just really confused on how a 2 month old vehicle can be already making a weird noise.

View 3 RepliesI drive a 2006 Volvo V50 with 65k. Recently the car started making a noise and the dealership told me that I need new front wheel hubs because my bearings are shot. The car has always been well within the weight limit, has never been through deep water (we do line in the pac NW so there is a decent amount of rain), and has had complete service at all of the maintenance times. I think that under 125k bearings should not be giving out and that volvo should replace the bearings for free - the mechanic is telling me that there is no set time for bearings to wear out - it can happen at literally any time/mileage/age and it would not be the company's fault. Who is correct?

We pulled off the road, turned the car off. When restarted the sound was gone, but then returned again when driving in heavy rain. View 21 RepliesI have owned a 2002 Volvo S60 2.4L for the past two years, and she has served me well. However, I have been having issues lately. She has hit 179,400-ish miles and with age things have started to fail. I want to know how much it will cost to fix these things and if I can do it myself.
There is a metallic popping noise coming from the right front side of the vehicle every time I make a turn (I haven't particularly noticed if it's a left- or right-hand turn when it happens.) I have been advised by my father that it's probably a CV (constant velocity) joint. Is that what's causing the noise?
My right front headlight has gone out, and I've replaced the bulb as well as the fuse, but it's still out. Could it be faulty wiring? The left front blinker has stopped blinking, I hope that's as simple as changing out the bulb.
The shift is automatic, but in the mornings (I've noticed it's mostly when it's cold outside) I attempt to move the shifter out of park and it won't budge for several minutes. Sometimes I have to turn the engine off, and then turn it back on for the shifter to move.
One last question- how often should I change and/or flush my transmission fluid and the filter, and can I do that myself or should I take it to the dealership? (Which I am reluctant to do.)
I have a 2003 Camry with the 2AZ-FE in it. It has just under 300000 kms on it and is really starting to make lifter noise. Now i know these engines do make ticking noise but I can tell that it is getting progressively worse. I phoned local toyota shop and they want 900 in labor to adjust valves no parts. I know this engine has no adjustment other than swapping lifters to a different size. I am just curious to see if this is worth it on a car with so many miles. Would I be better to drive till it dies then buy another motor or head? Also kinda worried about stripping head bolts in the block if i do change the head. How common is this?
View 1 RepliesRecently bought a 1994 Toyota Celica GT with a 2.2 off of Ebay, for a good price mind you as the body work on it is very nice, sporting a "seamless supra" body kit as they called it and some nice 8 spoke unilug rims.
The car has been nothing but problems from the start, first- when they shipped it to me, the car had been sitting for a month, so they jumped the car with a semi. Blew all of the relays, took me a few days to figure out that dilemma (as I'm not much of a car person)
Once the relays were replaced, the car ran beautifully as a 94 with 174k on it does.
And the trouble starts, I changed the oil in the car- was about to give the engine and the suspension a total overhaul and baby the car up real nice, the next morning as I am driving to work the oil light blinks a little bit, but I think well maybe there was so much sludge in the engine that the Part-Synthetic High Mileage Castrol motor oil I used broke up some and it had a bit of a hard time processing it.
Well by the time I get off work, I start the car, oil light is on permanently and I am hearing definite lifter noise. I dropped the oil pan, cleaned the screen and made sure the oil pump still worked, and replaced the oil filter. Still nothing. I checked the oil pressure by removing the filter and turning the car on momentarily, the car spat oil out where the filter is and will spit oil out if revved from the top where you place the oil.
But then all of a sudden it wont even start, it will turn over- but it wont start.
When I start my 2013 Prius (the car just passed the 1000 mileage marker) cold, I notice a tick coming from the ICE that almost sounds like a lifter tick. I do remember reading somewhere (I've read so much Prius literature in the past couple of weeks, I could begin to guess where) that the car, when cold, fires after DTC. I noticed this twice now, once when the car had about 500 miles on it, and again this morning, though I'm sure this is occurring each time I start it cold. Is this noise typical or is this something I should bring to the dealership's attention?
