I have a 1999 toyota tacoma 70,000/mi. While idling, at random intervals, truck surges forward. Have to stay on the brake. Cannot drive in winter. Took to Toyota dealer and other mechanics... described problem and that A/C seems to be on all the time. No one has been able to fix. My brother disconnected the A/C and surging has stopped, but I need a better fix that will allow my using AC.
View 4 RepliesMy 09 Tacoma 91000 miles- symptom: when idling with foot on the brake, on occasion, experiences engine pause/subtle forward sensation; otherwise drives superb. Service shop said the issue is remedied by replacing the drive shaft thereby switching out the "yoke" which is the source of the problem. Shop said this is a common problem with 09 Tacomas. Does this need immediate repair or can I drive safely?
View 19 RepliesMy 1998 2x4 2.4 cylinder tacoma truck (69k miles) is making a noise when idling or in any of the gears (5 spd) going down the road. The noise goes away when I barely touch/depress the clutch (depress about 1/2 to 1 inch). Any ideas what is making this sound? It's not a growl or rattle, but a very high pitch, whistling sound almost like a cross between a cricket, cicada and grass hopper.

I had diagnostic done at Autozone and no problems from check or OBD. The battery light has been coming on for a few minutes then going off at random intervals. Today I was towing trailer and quads, around 3500 lbs, to go riding and it was on most of the time running on interstate and highways.
Seems like the serpentine belt doesn't have as much tension as I would expect. Is there an easy way to change the serpentine? That looks to be a real pita.
My 4 cylinder Tacoma vibrates a lot when it is idling, especially sitting in "drive" at traffic lights. My regular mechanic has tried various things to remedy it but none has really worked. He suggested the valves may need to be adjusted. Is this plausible? Or is he off-base? And is it really expensive?

I'll be cruising along at 60 down the highway and then BAM! nothing happens to the car as long as I don't have the cruise control on...if I do then it sputters and I just take over. Is this more than just a Speed sensor issue?

Between 65 - 80 mph a chime goes off three times at seemingly random intervals whether I'm accelerating or decelerating in that zone. The speed warning is turned off and the winter tire function is off. There are no warning lights or messages. It's got my salesperson and a VW service dept baffled.

When I removed the center console to clean it up I noted there is an airbag module in there, and at one point in time there appears to have been a liquid spill nearby.
I saw a couple threads that were pretty old on this note, but was hoping for some fresh input on the possible problem and resolution to this.

So I started hearing a noise that sounded like a telegraph clicking in random intervals. Some days, no sound while others I thought I was an old Western Union Office. Now the sound has progressed into a sound that almost sounds like a small compressor. It sounds at each start up and then at different points during the drive. I have traced it back to this device. It sits to the left of the Air return behind the glovebox. I have two pics to illustrate. It is the black box with a small wiring harness plugges into the top. On the left side there is a cylindrical white piece that is part of this device. Everything in my car works so not sure what this thing does. It looks like a royal pain to get out as one of the bracket screws is down in the back so that screw will be tough to get to without dropping the blower housing. That may require pulling more things like the dash when they replaced the evaprator.

The car just came out of the shop on Friday, after the alternator and battery were replaced. I don't recall it doing this before then. Is this... normal for a car that's just had the alternator replaced?
View 10 RepliesMy T-Mobile MyTouch with Android 1.6 OS paired fine as a phone and mp3 player. The mp3 player is less than perfect however.
1) When playing a track, the sound will stop for 1/2 a second at seemingly random intervals. It seems that it's more like the stream is being paused than the audio is just dropping out. I turned off all the auto-update features in the phone in case it was because the phone was checking for email or something. It still happens.
2) When I take a call, the music stops, the call happens, and when I hang up the music plays out of the phone. I can re-connect the Bluetooth audio manually on the Nav screen Audio option and it's back to the car again.
I owned a 09 Prius for 8 weeks, and after a total loss accident, we replaced it with a 08 Touring model. I have never experienced anything like this with the 09, but have multiple times on the 08 (though no real rhyme or reason as to when/why)
The originally happened the night we picked up the 08. I stopped at target to pick up some milk while the wife sat in the car. the car was left in ready mode. when the ICE engaged the car "surged" forward and was enough to startle my wife (who was the usual driver of the 08) enough for her to think the car was not in park (which it was)
We tried to recreate it after i was finished at the store, and while the car did rock forward, it was not as pronounced as the first time (though much more then We feel the car should move upon the ICE starting.)
Took the car back to toyota, and they preformed a full inspection and stated that everything was within toyota's spec, and to keep an eye on it if it were to happen again.
Well it has done this about 5 times in the last few days. The Dealer is looking in to it.
I've been having an issue with my Elantra GT where the car appears to be shifting poorly. The issue is very intermittent and usually only occurs just after starting to drive for about 4 to 5 minutes. But it never occurs consistently during every time I start driving the car. It is an Auto transmission but it feels as if a poor downshift is being back (car hesitates, then surges forward). From my research the transmission in the GT appears to be fairly reliable.

Note: Installed K&N Typhoon around 95,000 km, issue persisted before and after.
Initially started to feel the issue around 80,000 km. At this point I took it to the dealer and had the transmission flushed. The issue went away until about the 87,000 to 90,000 km mark and then started to return. Went back to the dealer and they said they performed an updated and couldn't replicate the issue during test drives. Currently my car is at 98,500 and this morning when driving to work the issue was particularly severe and the check engine light came on.
I am having issues with my 2002 chevy cavalier.
The car occasionally surges forward while idle and revs up to 1500 rpm approximately occasionally when the air conditioner is on... if the brake is not applied I move forward.. the lurches are continuous every 3 seconds or so.
I am getting a code for an evap leak.. I have replaced the purge solenoid valve, gas cap, and checked all connections with no luck... slightly decreased gas mileage has occurred.
A little bit of a slick substance has been leaking from the car.. it has the consistency of water, but leaves a slight brown tinge on concrete.
I have a 1991 Chevy Lumina and I believe this wire is the root of my problems. I
wasn't the one who unplugged it but it seems it was unplugged as an easy way to get around a problem. When unplugged the car runs but the performance is off, It doesn't feel like it has the same power as it does when it's plugged in and it also sounds different when in idle. When the wire is plugged in the car stalls while driving at random intervals between 1 and 10 minutes and needs to be jumped to start it back up. I will attach pictures of the wire and its location within the surrounding area.
2005, 2.7l. FWD automatic, with 180,000+ miles.
A week ago it started making a random ticking noise I've never heard before. Today was the first chance I got to try and find it and I'm stumped on what could cause this.
The sound is a static or low voltage electrical discharge coming off the harmonic balancer. I can actually see the blue spark occurring at random intervals and locations on the balancer as the car is running.
Do i need to be looking for a bad engine ground? I'm having no other electrical problems. The car runs like a champ other than a minor oil and power steering fluid leak.
AC smells terribad sometimes. So bad I'm embarrassed to have guests in my car. The in cabin air filter has been replaced (supposedly) by the shop several times, but the smell is still there. Is something dead in my AC?No way to turn off side air vents. If I turn on my air, hit the feet selection button, air still comes out of my driver and passenger side air vents, but not the center. Is this normal?Odd clicking/churning sound from inside dash when selecting different air settings. DSG recall done 20k ago, but still random surges of power when downshifting to a stop. Also random jumping when shifting from N to D. Now this one really concerns me, at speed (50-80mph) there is a repeating chirping sound (like: reh-reh-reh-reh-reh). Its speed of chirp is proportionate to my driving speed. It seems to be coming from the wheel area, maybe the passenger it's very hard to tell. It doesn't happen all the time, but it will always happen on long drives at speed, 30+ minutes of 50-80mph. I even made a video, it takes a bit but you can hear the difference in sound when it kicks in.

I have a 05 GLI and I noticed that on the stock "E" valve my car would get random boost surges. I would barely tap the gas and the boost would build up to 8-10 PSI so I bought the J valve thinking it would solve the problem and just installed it today. I took it around the block and really liked how the power delivery became smoother and the car didn't have any boost surging issues. When I decided to put my foot down I noticed my car was only getting 11-12 PSI throughout the whole power band. Before on the E valve I was getting 16-17 PSI. My car's running a Unitronic stage 2 tune btw. I know upgrading to the "J" valve is a hit or miss but I think it's kind of odd that the car drives smoother but isn't running as much boost. I like how it feels for daily driving but something doesn't feel right.
View 2 RepliesI have appointment to bring my 2006 Passat 2.0T in for service but what might be causing the issues. Car surges when I am idle or beaked at a stoplight. It sort of feels like I was pushing both the break and glass pedal at the same time. When I move I no longer notice it. However when I put the car in park it the RPM's seem to go up to about 10 and back down again.
View 8 RepliesSo this doesn't begin until I put it into a forward gear, but after about 30 sec of smooth running, I will get a sudden momentary loss of power, then a surge, which repeats and intensifies as the van lurches forward until the engine finally stalls. Throwing it into N in the middle doesn't work. Babying the gas had no effect. It happened both at higher(2.5-3K) revs and at lower (.8-1.5k).
After killing the battery starting and restarting it just to keep it moving, I had it jumped, at which point I sat with it in P for 20 min to charge the battery and in all that time, it ran fine. I'd love to hear some possible diagnoses. Don't know if I should have it towed from where it's sitting, or try to drive it to the shop, or if it's something I can repair myself (think 1-star difficulty).
2010 F150 for the past 15,000 miles I have been experiencing a nasty repetitive surge when moving slowly forward with the brakes on, as you would do going through a drive through. The truck shakes when this happens and is very noticeable. Ford reprogrammed the transmission module, and now the surge happens twice as fast. What was the remedy? This is my first Ford after only GM products for the past 30 years.......and I hope they can find a resolution soon.
