I have a 2011 RAV4 with 122,000 miles. For the last few months I have heard a fluttering noise coming from the engine compartment, usually at in-town speeds when I step on the accelerator gently, for example to maintain speed on an incline.What could this be?
View 3 RepliesRumble whoosh noise (her description,,, I am currently in another State) coming from my wife's vehicle in the front of the engine compartment. Closer to the passenger side near the water pump. Noise has been present for the last six months, but would always go away after it was warmed up. During winter (In Tucson AZ so never gets too cold), it is worse due to the cold weather. Previously only happened at low RPMs and ended to be worse when turning a corner.Today it occurred also after operation for a quite beyond starting of the vehicle, and is starting to sound like the failure of bearings. Also a burning smell was occurring.Just replaced both the water pump and the alternator, and the front struts. The water pump is not leaking but the old pumps leaks are still evident. The current mechanic trying to troubleshoot is stumped. Motor mounts are getting close to failure, but still appear to not be a problem. CV joints are fine. What to look at?
2006 Toyota Rav4 4X4 4 Cylinder....
So my girlfriends Toyota RAV4 (2005) is making a medium pitched whirring noise from the passenger side of the engine compartment. (Same area where the serpentine belt and the alternator and all those goods are located.) The battery warning light is on, solid. I have not had a chance to take my DMM and check voltage but I suspect this is going to be a bad alternator since it is a noise consistent with the RPM of the vehicle and visual inspection of the belt is that it is still in one piece, not frayed, flexible, etc. I didn't rev the engine because I didn't want to freak her (the gf) out. My plan is to test voltage before she does anything rash like take it to the dealership which she is already planning on doing but the noise concerns me since noises tend to come from things that move which is probably an indication of some sort of mechanical failure and that tends to cost money. Luckily it's her car.
View 11 RepliesSo, I have 100K miles on a 2007 4Runner (V6) and after having my radiator flushed at the Toyota dealership service dept, I get my car back and now hear a low rumbling noise coming from the engine compartment. I hear this noise every time I turn on the air conditioner, and sometimes even when it's off.
I took my car to Toyota today and after getting the service advisor to acknowledge the noise, I get a call 2 hours later saying, a) that no noise was identified by the technician; b) nothing wrong with my car; and c) I can come pick it up.
It ain't my imagination. Clearly, something is wrong. What it is? Should I take it to another service department? This kind of thing makes me crazy!
I own a 1999 Toyota sienna that has 112,000 miles. For the past few months there has been a whirring noise that seems to be coming from the center engine compartment. It started quietly and now has increased in volume. It reminds me of a speedometer cable that is beginning to fail. I have taken it to my trusted mechanic for a diagnosis and he thought it was metal on metal noise from the transmission. I have owned cars for 40 plus years and have'nt heard of this type of tranny noise. What could be causing this? It makes this noise under power and when I release the accelerator the noise almost disappears. Also there is a clunking noise coming from the passenger front wheel after releasing the brake pedal when I come to a stop. I have replaced the strut,ball joint,and lower control arm bushing trying to remedy this. I cannot find anything else that is loose.
View 4 RepliesLooking for some input on a recent "hissing" noise coming from eng compartment. It's only noticeable during initial acceleration, and sometimes at the beginning of gear changes. I am assuming its tubo and/or exhaust related, as I've noticed a strong exhaust odor in the cab as well. I wasn't under load when the problem started but i was under rapid acceleration. Not noticing any fluids or oils leaking. No warning lights have tripped, as of yet.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2006 Rav4 and every time I drive my car after it's been sitting for a while there is a very loud noise coming from the rear of the car, the noise usually lasts about 10 to 20 seconds and only happens when I press on the accelerator, and is always when I go forward, never in reverse. The noise is usually louder when it is humid or it is raining.
View 13 RepliesMy 2000 Rav4 has 120,000 miles on it- engine timing belt and everything with done at 60,000 miles. About a year after this work, i noticed an engine noise that only shows up when the A/C is on, or the engine is under lots of stress, and only sporadically. It sounds just like a thin metal blade being stuck in a fan- and it's very loud. It disappears immediately after I let up off the gas, and does not always reappear when I reapply the gas.
It is consistent though in that it starts close to the 3000 rpm range. I've checked for interference on anything with the belts and cooling fans, but don't see anything there. Other than the noise, engine has been working great. Also checked the motor mounts, they seem okay. The only conclusion I can draw is that something is interfering with a rotating part, maybe by the flex of the engine under stress, but I can't point a finger to anything.
I am hearing a really strange "groaning" or grunt noise right after the engine turns over. The colder is the louder it is. It only lasts about a second. It's only when the engine is cold.
View 1 RepliesI started noticing some strange sounds coming from the engine compartment after shutting off the car ( a 2007 with 90K miles). It's different from the hum for several seconds that I often hear after switching off the car. This one is a squeaky rough sound like a small motor wearing out. I think it's from the driver side of the engine compartment. Is that where the inverter pump is? This car didn't have any record of needing the inverter pump changed for the recall as far as I could tell.

I am experiencing a loud noise which is getting worse from inside my engine compartment. I took off the heat shield assuming it was coming from the exhaust manifold but it is not. It sounds more like it is coming from the intake manifold. Now I would assume it was the intake manifold issue that has been described in many threads but it is not a vibration or clanging sound. It just sounds like air is escaping from my intake. What baffles me is that the sound is loudest in drive. Then neutral is the next loudest, then reverse there is very little unordinary sound.
I hear it a little bit when I am going like 15-20 MPH in reverse and let off the gas to decelerate. There is a noticeable noise increase just at idle too. I checked and all fluid levels are good. I changed the tranny fluid about a month ago and according to the dipstick it is right on where it should be. The sound is increasing and I am worried about what it may be. It sounds as if it has an exhaust leak but I do not see anything.
There is no problem starting the car- it always turns over immediately, but every 1 out of 7 - 10 cold starts includes a strange noise from the engine compartment. Just as I let go from the crank position, I hear a sound similar to that of playing cards being shuffled. The duration of the noise is just a second or two, just like the time it takes to shuffle once.
It never has happened when the car is still warm. I had the Toyota dealer look at it, but they couldn't reproduce the noise- not surprising, since I didn't leave the car overnight, and even if I had, it still would be unlikely to happen when needed. The noise has been happening for a year or so, and it doesn't seem to increase or decrease in frequency due to air temperature or weather.
I did have a lot of corrosion on the battery terminals last summer and had starting problems then, and had the mechanic clean the terminals and check the battery, and the battery was fine, yet the sound continues, but no further starting issues. What might be going on?
My 2011 Prius plus made a growling noise from the front right engine compartment area the other day. Yesterday as I drove it to work...it stopped growling and the A/C stopped blowing cool air. The volume of air from the vents is the same, just no A/C.

View 15 RepliesI purchased a brand new 2014 Sonata Limited 2 months ago and took it to the local dealer last night for two issues.
The first issue was small rust spots on the sillplate and the second is a very slight clicking noise I hear from the engine compartment now when I turn the temperature dial.
The dealer just called and said that the clicking is "normal". The car didn't do it for the first two months.
03 camry 205,000 miles. After first start when backing up, there is a thrumming vibration noise coming from the engine compartment. The noise is less when moving off in drive.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with about 160K miles on it. Over the last month or two I have noticed a persistent ticking noise coming from inside the engine compartment. It sounds like it might increase in frequency along with the engine speed. It is loudest when I pull up in a drive-thru or next to another car and roll down my window. It is audible when sitting or while moving. Doesn't seem to make a difference if the car is hot or cold. I checked the oil and it appears to be full. It sounds like it's coming directly out of the engine block itself. I get the oil changed every 3,000 miles like clockwork.
View 3 RepliesI first noticed a strange noise coming from the engine compartment a day ago. I had left the car to sit in the sun for a few hours. When I got in the A/C was set to on and the system was on auto. I tested to see if the noise went away when I turned off the A/C and it did. I turned it back on and it returned. I know the A/C operates at different speeds based upon cooling needs and that it can get sort of noisy but I didn't think that it could/should get this loud. The system seems to begin working quickly and it does seem to put out cold air. If the noise is unusual do you think that it indicates another underlying problem in the A/C system?
Just to clarify, the ICE is not running in the video. The cabin fan is set to low and the temperature is set to low. The person in the car presses the A/C button and the cooling fans in the engine compartment come on as well as the A/C unit. The sound gets louder a few seconds in. We are original owners of a 2004 Prius with 165K miles. We've taken excellent care of what has been a great family car. A couple of months ago, we got a check engine light associated with a catalytic converter error. We first replaced the oxygen sensor, which temporarily eliminated the error light, but the car really loses power, especially when a load is placed on it going up hill. The power loss is associated with a fluttering noise coming from within the engine and the battery display showing that it is not charging sufficiently.
We took it back to the dealer and they replaced the exhaust manifold gasket and suggested we replace the catalytic converter (> $2000) but also recommended a local exhaust specialist who could replace the catalytic converter for much less. The exhaust shop examined the car and told us the catalytic converter was fine and did not need replacement. There are no more error codes, and the dealership and their service department shows no interest in repairing our car.
I purchased a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 brand new less than a year and a half ago, and am now noticing that the rims are starting to rust. I am careful to get the road salt off and the car is washed often enough. I also noticed that some of the lug nuts are getting rusty. I am assuming that this should be covered as the car is still under warranty but I'm assuming the dealer will fight me on this. I have also noticed that this seems to be an inherent problem with the Rav 4 as I have seen it on others.
