Looking at buying an 05 rav4. Everything looked great until I checked the tranny fluid which was grey/pink. It was a trade so no service records but a very clean carfax. I really like the car and it shifts fine including accelerating up a hill. I'm hoping it just needs changing. I'm in need of replacing my 99 CRV with 230k and needs a new head.
View 18 RepliesMy mechanic says the transmission fluid in my 2007 Rav4 (about 47K, normal driving) is black and needs replacing ($144). I called the local Toyota service department who said this car has a sealed transmission and replacement is not needed. The Toyota maintenance schedule does not recommend replacement until 120K miles.

View 3 RepliesMy car is a Toyota Camry 2003, automatic transmission. I don't know if the previous owner ever change the transmission fluid, but my car has 100k miles already. Today, I took the transmission fluid dipstick out, it look black and smell burnt, but I don't see any metal. I don't know how to take out the pan and check for metallic pieces, is there any auto shop that would do it for free?When I accelerate to 40mph from a complete stop, the RPM goes up the 3000 and then quickly drop to 2000, then gradually drop to 1300. My car speed up really slowly even when I keep holding the gas pedal down with my feet. Is my transmission slipping? Sometimes when I start my car or when I change gear, my car jerk a little. I'm afraid it too bad already and my transmission is depending on the broken metal pieces, so I don't know if I should flush it? Will changing the transmission fluid fix the problem?
View 8 Replies2005 rav4 tire pressure light is on. The tires are over size. All are up to pressure (29lbs) It says 29 on the door. I can reset the pressure light but it comes back on.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2005 Rav4 Sport. I've been taking it to the same mechanic for years and have never had a problem. After my last visit (65K tune-up and new brakes), the car squealed when applying brakes driving forward or in reverse. The mechanic took it back, changed brakes and there was a small improvement. They next took it to Toyota who changed brakes and rotors and there was a bigger improvement. Now the squeal only happens when reversing out of a parking space while turning the wheel. It is back at the mechanics. They said they've taken it apart and can't find anything that would cause the problem.

Few months back I noticed that my Camry is sputtering on low RPM below 2000 ( but never when engine is cold )
Car is driving perfect on the highway but in the city sputtering get very annoying when on low RPM and high gear.
My remedy for that is to press overdrive off button after this sputtering always goes away.
My transmission fluid level when HOT is 1 inch above HOT mark
And when in cold next ( morning ) label is still above HOT mark
Fluid level never goes down to COLD mark
What are the cause of the tran fluid be on same level and can sputtering be the symptom of it?
My girlfriend each week has to add at least a quart of tranny fluid. There are no apparent spots on the garage floor. The problem started last week when the engine light came on and she found herself sitting on the side of the road with her daughters in Nevada's 100+ heat.
I don't understand where the fluid could be going unless it leaks out when she is driving... but you would think that when she parks it, some would still drip off onto the floor and this is not the case.
I have a 1988 accord LX with 225K miles. 2 or 3 days ago I noticed a very large puddle of tranny fluid under the car. Upon inspection, the fluid is coming out of the tranny case above the shift cable. The spot looks almost like something has punched through from the inside, but the car drives ok...
View 1 RepliesI have the 2010 prius V with the 17in tires. I love the rims on them Vs the hubcaps on the other models.
HOwever I have read that it is hard to hypermile with the 17in rims. SO I was trying to figure out what I can do to raise that MPG up there. I have noticed that my prius does not glide well.
I have 2LBs more air in the tires then it says on the side. mine say 60LB so i have 62.
My only thought is to running Amsoil 0w30 oil and amsoil synthetic tranny fluid. I know on a regular gas car you can up your MPG at least 2 MPG or more.
I have a back up vehicle which my son uses occasionally. It's '1994 Mercury tracer. All the transmission fluid appears to be on the ground. Would that mean the transmission is no good! We haven't driven it but once this summer. My son bought some transmission fluid and put it in.
View 8 RepliesI just got done replacing the passenger side half shaft axle on my 02' Elantra. I didn't have any fluid leak out when I removed the old axle(watched a few YouTube videos and everyone had fluid leak the minute the old one came out) but I think that may be because of the angle of my driveway and the car by jacked up pretty good.
Went I got done I checked all my fluids while I was at it. All of a sudden when I pulled the dipstick out for the transmission fluid, it was covered in air bubbles. I drove it around for 3 hours this morning delivering newspapers with no issues, checked the fluid again, there is still a few bubbles but not many.
Was just wondering if this would be a cause for concern? or is it probably just a bunch of air that got pushed in when I put the new axle in?
Those with Honda's know the Auto Tranny needs some extra care - there is no filter to change.
Factory recommends drain and fill every 2 yrs, which I have been doing.
After Acura TL (?) had some issues, Honda made a machine to suck old fluid completely out - heard dealership did not touch these machines for 6 months!
I am wondering if I should change these fluid every 1 yr instead of 2 yrs on any of my two cars - one is pre 1990 (1st gen) with 165k - but replaced tranny 7yrs ago with a used one and it had done 25k. Other is around 2000 (3rd gen) with 120k. The 1st gen does 3k every year and the other does 8k.
I could take to dealership and ask them to drain the whole fluid out - sometime this might make the tranny from stop working given the age on the 1st gen.
Are there any other tips?
My 4WD sport trac was running fine. I took it off road and put it in 4WD. After I was done in the woods. I put it back into 2WD and backed up to unlock. I then drove 2 hours home. The next day the transmission started shifting funny, especially overdrive almost like I was low on fluid. (which I check and I'm not) And the truck sounds like its running ruff. Is my transfer case still ingaged? Do I need to take it in for tranny work?

View 10 RepliesI have a 2008 Toyota Rav4 all wheel drive that has 80,000 miles on it. It's been having a lot of problems lately, namely the water pump. I got it replaced at our local mechanic's about 3 weeks ago and all was fine until I tried to turn on the heat last night. Only cold air blew out and then came on intermittently and then just stopped again. The fan works fine, it's just not blowing hot air. Not sure if this is related to the water pump being replaced? Do I need to flush the heater core? There is no leakage. I am really getting annoyed with all the issues the car has been having lately and don't want to spend a lot more money to fix it at this point. How much would it be to replace the heater core?
View 7 RepliesMy 2004 toyota rav4, manual transmission, 70,000 miles has been problem free. Now when i turn the key , nothing, no sound , dead. sometimes the 2nd or 3rd try 'it'll start right up, and run like nothing's wrong. other times will not start at all. 2 hrs later , try it and starts right up,. the battery has been replaced and it changed nothing. The mechanics are stumped and say they can't do anything till the problem repeats itself, and it starts fine, at their garage. I've been stranded and don't want that to happen again. What's wrong? The clutch switch?

This tranny has the dipstick and each time we try to check the fluid level with the dip stick we are not sure if we are getting a good reading or not.
What's the trick to it. Should the tranny fluid be at a certain temp before checking? I don't have the manual with me so I'm trying to find the procedure.
Ok, I'm finally ready to dump out this stock tranny fluid and put in something else to alleviate the 3rd gear grind. Question is, which one should I put in?
View 18 RepliesWe have a 2004 Passat 1.8 t with about 180,000 miles on it. We changed the battery and now it seems to belch out tranny fluid once it comes to a stop. I thought I read where some sensors need to be reset after a battery is changed. Would a battery change cause a leak of this type?
