My 2005 Toyota Prius with 188,000 miles has a whining sound when I start and when I turn off the engine. It happens 95% of the time. The dealer says it could be a water pump.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2001 Santa Fe with around 140,000 miles on it. I've had my share of problems with it, but the last couple of years have been fine until this morning. I tried to start it and appeared to have full battery power, but it would not turn over. Instead of a clicking sound, it was more of a whining sound it made while it tried to start. I took the battery into AutoZone and they told me it was dead, so I bought a new one and replaced it after cleaning the connector cables. The same thing is still happening with the new battery. I've attempted to jump it as well.

View 5 RepliesThis might just be car engine in general regardless of make or model, but upon a cold start, my GTI engine whines or buzzes for approximately 1 second before it stops. I had a 2009 Toyota Corolla that also did this, but I had it fixed with a TSB due to the oil not reaching the VVT-I gears or something in time. It's not the same noise in my GTI, but I was wondering about same sound almost every time upon a cold start?

On cold weather conditions, doing a cold start, I allow the engine to run and warm up for a minimum of 5 minutes before driving. In this time frame the engine goes thru the whining sound and then the engine noise is quiet (normal).
What do other owners allow for engine warm up time before driving.
My mother and I own a 2001 RAV4 and over the past few weeks/couple of months we've had 4 instances where the car wouldn't start. Everything works - lights, radio, windows, etc. but when we try to start the engine it just makes a repetitive ticking sound and won't turn over. The first 2 times it happened the car eventually started but the second two times we had to get a jump. I suspect that there is a loose connection somewhere in the battery, but when it happened again the other day my mother got a jump and drove to the dealer for a look; the repairman said that the battery was fine and couldn't offer any other explanation for it.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2008 Toyota Matrix with 56k miles on it. Recently it starting to make a whining sound when accelerating. It's very subtle, but kinda sounds like a plane taking off. It seems to go away once the car is moving/maintaining speed. I just got an oil change and the air filter replaced. Also, it seems to idle rougher than it used too, or I could just be paranoid.

For a long time now I have dealt with a whining sound in my 2012 Toyota corolla. The symptoms are that the sound only happens when the accelerator pedal is slightly engaged. This happens at any speed. At the slightest push of the pedal a whining/spinning sound happens and if you maintain pedal engagement the sound of whining/spinning continues. The sound goes away instantly when the pedal is depressed and will again come back when engaged subsequent times.
I have been researching on the internet and I seem to be pointed in the direction of the transmission fluid to change from the Toyota Genuine ATF WS currently being used in the 2012 Toyota Corolla as the stock transmission fluid to Redline D4 as others have experienced a similar noise problem in 2010 corolla models and have made the noise go away by using the Redline D4 because of viscosity differences. I am not sure however if the same transmission model (U341E) is being used in all Corolla models.
Turning the engine off and on in stop and go traffic saves gas but what does it do for the life of battery and starter?
View 12 RepliesI had a toyota prius gen 3 last year where it had an engine knocking sound, where I tried every TSB and changed the spark plugs, spark plug cables, intake manifold, engine knots..... etc., nothing worked except the following video which solved the knocking completely with no return.

It had been in the garage since my husband passed away, I usually started it on the weekends but have not done so for a month or so. What can be the cause?
View 9 RepliesBought this cheap 93 grand caravan 3.3 with about 350,000km about 750km ago and it had a bit of a whining sound from the start, thought it was normal for it's life. Last night I was taking my daughter and infant grand-daughter home when there was a terrible clunking, grinding and rattling sound coming from the engine. It was about -20 outside so I decided to just limp it home, but when I got a block from my daughters house I lost power steering. I checked under the hood an saw the belt on the left side with all the pulleys had come off and only one pulley near the bottom was spinning. after trying to spin the other pulleys i noticed one wouldn't spin ether way,and was really hot. thought it might have seized up and threw the belt. Is there a pulley in there that's not supposed to move freely, and if not what should I do now?
View 8 RepliesMy Honda Accord 2004 is making a whining sound when I start it up. It fades while driving buy it comes back every time the car accelerates from 1st to 2nd. It is an automatic but it is about that time frame that the sound occurs.
I've checked most things but am no expert. Transmission fluid, power steering, antifreeze, battery are all topped off and I just had an oil change (where I did use regular vs. synthetic which might be a factor but I don't know).
I also recently had the serpentine belt fixed but it sounds like the noise is coming from that area when the hood is up.
Over the past week I've observed a whining sound. I've been trying to narrow it down and here is what I've got:
- It is speed related but not RPM related.
- It is not louder at any particular speed.
- It happens when coasting in neutral (manual transmission).
- The volume does not change based on whether turning or going straight.
- The pitch is mid/high, very similar to the whining from a too tight timing belt. And it gets lower and higher based on speed.
- As best as I can tell it is coming from the front driver's side.
- It is intermittent, although it's there more often than not.
- No uneven wear on front tires or other signs.
It's worth mentioning that another sound came soon after this whining. It's a sort of fluttering click sound. It becomes a lot louder when accelerating uphill. This also is speed related but not RPM related, in that the flutter/click increases in speed as the vehicle increases in speed.
Car makes a whining type noise when I start it and turn the wheels to pull out of parking spot. Once car is warmed up, the sounds is gone. Is this the power steering?
View 10 RepliesI have a 2011 Santa Fe 3.5L with about 108,000 kms (roughly 65,000 miles) that seems to have produced a bit of a whining sound from the engine. It will do it in park, or in gear, and the sound seems to increase slightly with an increase in RPMs.

I've taken off the serpentine belt and spun all the pulleys. I can't figure it out, I'm thinking maybe timing chain but I'm not sure.
View 12 RepliesYesterday after a 45 minute drive home (GA and above 90 degree heat), I noticed a moderately high pitched whining noise after shutdown. The noise continued for about 5 minutes. From my understanding, the inverter coolant pump redistributes the coolant after shutdown and I have heard a humming noise previously which I assumed to be this action.
View 10 RepliesBack story, I've been borrowing my father's 2008 Prius off of him since I took a new job and my Tacoma doesn't get the best mpg, and finally purchased it off of him. Its making a new sounds though and he wants to get it fixed if its something major.
Its a quiet peeping that can be heard inside the car when coming to a stop (just when its quiet.) I've tracked the sound down to the engine bay but cant pinpoint where it is exactly, somewhere on the drivers side and its more of a pulsating whining sounds. The water pump was replaced about 10k miles ago at 65k miles under warranty.
