I have a 2008 Toyota Matrix with 56k miles on it. Recently it starting to make a whining sound when accelerating. It's very subtle, but kinda sounds like a plane taking off. It seems to go away once the car is moving/maintaining speed. I just got an oil change and the air filter replaced. Also, it seems to idle rougher than it used too, or I could just be paranoid.

For a long time now I have dealt with a whining sound in my 2012 Toyota corolla. The symptoms are that the sound only happens when the accelerator pedal is slightly engaged. This happens at any speed. At the slightest push of the pedal a whining/spinning sound happens and if you maintain pedal engagement the sound of whining/spinning continues. The sound goes away instantly when the pedal is depressed and will again come back when engaged subsequent times.
I have been researching on the internet and I seem to be pointed in the direction of the transmission fluid to change from the Toyota Genuine ATF WS currently being used in the 2012 Toyota Corolla as the stock transmission fluid to Redline D4 as others have experienced a similar noise problem in 2010 corolla models and have made the noise go away by using the Redline D4 because of viscosity differences. I am not sure however if the same transmission model (U341E) is being used in all Corolla models.
Why my transmission is acting up. its recently started humming/whining when accelerating. it sort of sounds like the power steering when you turn your wheel to far on an older car. it recently started happening (3-4months ago) and I am not to happy since its pretty much a year old. Is it covered under the limited lifetime warranty? it has 28000 miles on it, v6, automatic, and its the xle version.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2009 Toyota Matrix. About 130,000 miles and bought used from a dealer at about 20,000 miles. Was probably sitting on lot several months I get a rumble like going over rumble strips as I am accelerating, most often between 40 and 50 miles an hour, but regularly when I am driving over a distance at about 175 on the RPM gauge. It does not happen when I am accelerating consistently through that range. When it happens I can accelerate through it to stop it or it stops if I let off the accelerator. Dealer can't figure it out. Have checked wheel balance. Told me they will figure it out when it gets worse - very useful. Said they could do a transmission fluid service but no promises. They do a repair that would fix it that didn't fix it. A friend has suggested tire rods may be failing. Been going on several months and I have learned to pretty much drive to avoid the rumble but still worried the entire drive train is going to fall off the car one day.
View 4 RepliesI own a 2007 Honda Civic. For the last several months, the car starts making a strange mechanical whining sound when turned on. The sound grows louder when accelerating or going in higher rpms. It also seems to get a little quieter when I turn on the air conditioning. But the soubd never goes away. Car otherwise runs perfectly fine and never fails to start. Took it to two different honda dealerships to have it looked at. One said it had something to do with the a/c, the other said the alternator might be the alternator. I tested the alternator with a voltmeter and it seems to be working just fine. However, when you open the hood, the sound seems to be coming from the alternator area.
View 7 RepliesMy 2004 Toyota Matrix has been making a rattling/chattering noise when I accelerate. I took it to a shop (in nyc, where I live) who said it is a problem with the bearings and that my best bet is to replace the engine with a used one. He quoted me about $2500, parts and labor included. Also, he said it doesn't really make sense to try to rebuild the engine - better to replace it.
Does this cost/analysis make sense? I know nothing about car repair, but a bit of googling does seem to confirm that this is a problem with the bearings (particularly the rod bearings?).
I just bought a truck, it has a whining noise while accelerating, stops while letting on the gas, does not do it in neutral even if i rev up the engine. Only whines while there is some force on it, ie.. accelerating, or going up a hill at any angle, and does it from about 10-15mph- atleast 60mph.

View 6 RepliesBack story, I've been borrowing my father's 2008 Prius off of him since I took a new job and my Tacoma doesn't get the best mpg, and finally purchased it off of him. Its making a new sounds though and he wants to get it fixed if its something major.
Its a quiet peeping that can be heard inside the car when coming to a stop (just when its quiet.) I've tracked the sound down to the engine bay but cant pinpoint where it is exactly, somewhere on the drivers side and its more of a pulsating whining sounds. The water pump was replaced about 10k miles ago at 65k miles under warranty.
When my truck sits all day and its cold out, my truck in 2WD will make a whining sound going down the road, sometimes its a grinding sound almost. Appears to be coming from the passenger side of the truck towards the front. Engaging 4x4 gets rid of the noise, and the noise will usually disappear after the truck has been running and warmed up. I've changed my ball joints recently and everything looked good and yes it had done it a time or two before hand. What causes this, and how do I fix it?
View 6 RepliesNow that the weather is cooling, and my windows are down, I am noticing an odd sound seemingly from the left rear of our Matrix. It is a fairly high (but indeterminately) pitched, sustained jingling or rattling. Somewhat like I am dragging a very light chain behind the car, or scraping a light metal rod along very finely corrugated, but thick (high pitched) metal. Or maybe like a really lousy triangle. It starts and stops unpredictably, but with changes: it may start or stop with the application of brakes or gas, or may do so randomly. I think. I have not been able to discern a consistent pattern.
We are about to take a short weekend road trip. Should I be very worried?
2008 ISF. Has made whining sound (like a supercharger) off and on since '11 and 30k miles. Clearly coming from accessory belt system.
Having read this forum I assumed it was the tensioner, and finally replaced it last week @ 52k. Spun all pulleys by hand and all felt/sounded fine. Actually the old tensioner seemed fine too, even the belt- no cracks or wear, so I didn't replace belt at first, just tensioner.
Well new tensioner reduced the sound just a little, but still there at times, so I replaced the belt with a goodyear gatorback and that made the whine worse than ever. So I put the old belt back on, and am currently still dealing with some whine,
I don't have another ISF to compare to, but it can't be normal. It's not loud in cabin, my friends don't think anything of it, but I hear it and it's embarrassing.
Since I cant hear or feel an issue with any of the pulleys, is there a logical order in which I should start replacing them? I'm at a loss as for what to do next. I can't pinpoint where noise originates since it only occurs under load while I'm driving, but it's certainly from the accessory belt system.
2008 F150 HD Payload package with 5.4L and 4spd auto, 61,000 miles.
Recently developed a whining sound coming from the transmission or somewhere else in the drivetrain. Does not sound like rear axle because it changes pitch with the change of gears. I proved this by disengaging OD while driving and the whine was higher pitched once the transmission down shifted. I did some other research and found a reference to the #9 bearing going bad in a 4R75 trasnmission in a Crown Victoria. I am going to fight for any repair to be covered by the powertrain warranty even though it just clicked 61,000. The dealer has done ALL maintenance on this truck since it was new (following severe duty recommendations).
Immediately after my last Jiffy Lube oil change, my 2006 Toyota Matrix now has a faint hissing sound on acceleration. The sound seems to be coming from the engine compartment, kind of near where the glove compartment is. My first thought was that a leaf or piece of paper had gotten in with the cabin air filter when they checked it, but that's not it. The sound is there even with the fan off. There is no noticeable change in performance and no loss of air conditioning. Did they bump into a vacuum hose or something when they changed the oil? What could it be?

The engine has started to make a loud whining sound recently. I replaced the belt and tensioner since it was original and had 93,000 miles on it. The sound is still there.
The sound increases with rpm but doesn't change when you turn the steering wheel.
The engine starts and runs smoothly with plenty of power.
I recently took my 2010 Corolla CE to my dealership and had some minor work done on the brakes (rust cap cleaned, calipers machined as well)
The new problem now is that I hear a ticking sound while driving as if something is touching.. The Technician at Toyota said there was still 70% on the pads and 80% left on the rear shoes.. Encountered a ticking sound while driving along?
Starting somewhere in the course of a 400 mile drive yesterday, my car developed a new sound. It sounds like something is either vibrating against something else or some little chunk of plastic is bouncing around in the engine somewhere. At first I thought it was a piece of the bumper or trim dragging on the road, but it's not. You hear it when the car starts, when the car gets gas, and even when the engine is idling. It's not a constant sound, but it's there more often then it is not. It's there at high and low speeds. It's there whether the engine is warm or dead cold. To my untrained eye, there's nothing out of order when I look under the hood. It doesn't seem to impact performance (yet!).

2010 Toyota Matrix with 72k miles....
We have 3 company work trucks. They are F150's 2WD V6 - one is a 2008 and two are 2007s. They have all had thrust bearing problems. We just had the #9 thrust bearing replaced in the 2008 for the third time. The trans hasn't failed but starts making a whining sound at all speeds which varies in pitch relative to speed. The 2008 has had it replaced at: 40K, 60K, and now 70K. One 2007 had it replaced at 60K and 90K. The other 2007 had it replaced at 50K.
Our dealership says they've never seen anything like it & that our trucks are the only ones they've seen this on. They are suggesting it's happening due to driving behaviors. All 3 trucks have a single driver and aren't switched or shared. The 2008 doesn't carry or tow. The 2007s both carry hundreds of pounds of tools daily. This just seems like too much of a coincidence to be driver induced and that we're the only ones with these issues.
My son's 2010 Toyota Corolla S made a "rattling ticking sound at idle" twice this week.
I can't duplicate it, the oil level is fine and everything is working.
I've recently purchased a used 2008 Prius with 77000 miles. I was a bit apprehensive but have started to fall in love with this car. After running some errands yesterday, I heard a strange buzzz, coming from the middle of the engine compartment. When I'm in the car is sounds like it is front of me, but seems to be more in the middle when you pop the hood.
And when I'm accelerating, there is now a strong hum almost like a revving sound and it increases the faster I go. I am also getting the Maint Reqd light flashing as I turn on the car, but it goes away when the ICE kicks in, just started this in the past week. I have put about 500 miles on it since I bought it and I did buy an extended warranty.
I am getting between 41-44 mpg, depending on traffic conditions, around town, so the MPG, so far has not been effected.
I own a 2010 Toyota Corolla S that I purchased with about 30k miles, I have put about 65k on it since purchasing it. When applying the brakes in dry conditions I am receiving what feels like the abs engaging and a loud pulsing sound/creaking sound. The brakes will pulsate as if I am stopping on snow or ice but no traction control or abs lights will not illuminate. This has been happening for a good while(ever since I purchased the car). I have replaced the front rotors and pads and the problem purists.
