Toyota - Camry :: Cuts Out While Driving
Jan 17, 2011
The other day I got into my car and it started fine. After driving about a block it cut out. All the dash lights come on but it makes a funny sound when turned over and doesn't start. I tried jumping it but it was no different

My son's 1998 shook and cut off at a red light today. I am taking it to be fixed and do not want to be taken for a ride financially. What it could be, so I can show up at the repair shop professing some knowledge?

I've got a 2010 Camry. I've had it since new and it's been pretty well maintained. Recently, I've been having an issue where it cuts like it wants to stall out when I stop after driving.
The idle will also surge, but it's a small surge, from like 750 rpm to 1,000 and then back to 750. Last night after driving, it dropped to around 500rpm for s second and I thought it was going to stall, but it didn't.
I love the car, so I'm hoping it's not a serious issue. 6 speed manual with about 130,000 miles. Other than this and a small exhaust leak, it's running great.

I have a 2000 Camry Solara V6 with about 108K miles on it. The car has recently started to give the following problem: The car starts without any problem in the morning and runs smoothly. There is no problem while the engine is in idle mode. The problem starts when after driving for a while I shut the engine, say for filling in gas. When I try to start the engine again the engine will start, idle for a couple of seconds and then die.
The engine doesn't keep on running in idle mode. I can keep the engine running by pressing on the accelerator and keeping the rpm above 1000. Once I drive for a few feet then the engine doesn't die even if I idle at a stop light. This generally happens only after I shut the engine after having driven the car for a few miles and then start the engine again within the next 20 minutes. The battery is in good condition. Any clues on what the problem may be?

My 2000 Toyota Camry V6 died while driving the other day. At the shop they were able to start it but said it was misfiring but it didn't cut off when they were driving it. They recommended a tune-up to replace spark plugs and "wires" but admitted they weren't sure what the problem was. I haven't had a tune-up in awhile, actually not sure when the last time I had one was (if ever!). Would this cause it to die while driving?
Should I invest in a tune-up even if it doesn't fix the problem? The battery is about 3 months old. The master and slave cylinder were recently replaced (about 6 months ago), timing belt and water pump and hoses were replaced a couple of years ago.I have high miles, about 260,000 and love this car and have needed very little work and has been a very reliable car. Would love to continue driving it!!

During our last ice storm during a nice long skid down an icy hit, I reverted suddenly back to my days one decade ago of driving a stick-shift in the ice and tried to down-shift our '98 Camry (automatic). I placed it in reverse. It stalled. The car continues to run, but the check engine light came on. I took it into the garage and they couldn't find any engine issues. They turned off the check engine light. It came back on the next day. Sometimes it sounds like the gears aren't shifting automatically as I drive (rpms run high.) Am I damaging the car by continuing to drive it?

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry CE (2.2L/V4) w/ 130,000 miles on it. Just recently I have been experiencing a stalling issue after driving on the highway for 19 miles (or 20 minutes) at a speed greater than 65 mph. As soon as I exit and take my foot off the gas the car will stall as if I just turned the key in the off position. After I pull over, turn the key in the off position and wait a minute or two, the car start right up as if nothing happening. The idle seems to be ?normal?. The engine light does not come on when this happens.
If I feel the car may stall when still on the highway after slowing down, I can shift the car into neutral and hold the idle speed high enough to continue driving. However the car will eventually stall. But again and I restart it and be on my merry way without incident. I have try switching to high octane gas, but that did not work. If I disconnect the battery for a few hours the computer reboots itself and it will take a few more trips at high speeds for this issue to occur again. I have put in a fuel injector cleaner and cleaned the butterfly value (air intake). I own an Auto Xray code scanner; however it is not showing any error codes. What this issue may be?

So my 1999 car sputters while driving and at lights and when I pull off I have to floor it but not only that's the oil light flashes while I do that. It has 210,000 miles, what's wrong?

I have a 4 cyl 2000 camry. I notice the smell of burning oil when I shut off the car and while I'm driving. There is no black smoke coming from the tail pipe and it uses minimal oil. I removed the spark plugs and found oil on the threads of spark plug # 2, but not on the electrode. What's up?

When I am driving along with my foot on the gas petal, the car slows down, it drags, (sounds like changing gears) then resumes speed all by itself. My friend told me he thought perhaps the gas was dirty and to get the gas filter changed. When I took it to the mechanic, he said my 2002 Toyota Camry six cylinder, automatic did not have a gas filter. The problems still exists.

Two cars, a Toyota Camry and a Corolla, are shaking when driving them, esp. around 35-45 mph when accelerating. This started right after a historic snow storm in Virginia that brought 24" of snow and temperatures in the teens and a bit lower. Nothing appears to be wrong with any of the tires. The shaking feels like the car as a whole; it does not really come through the steering wheel. We`ve only driven each car once since the storm.
I`m thinking this may be from all the moisture and cold. Does this sound reasonable? Do you think it might work its way out, or do we have serious problems with two different cars on our hands?

I have a 1999 Toyota Camry 2.2 4cyl with 220K+ miles.
I was driving on the freeway when I heard a loud "POP" and rat-tat-tat cracking sound from my engine. I managed to pull over on the road where the car rolled to a stop. I tried to start up the car and the starter cranked, but the engine wouldn't start.
I thought it might be a broken timing belt since a similar situation happened to a family member (who was driving another Camry) a couple of years ago, and we were able to fix the car by changing the worn down timing belt. So today I spent all day taking things apart and finally got to the timing belt, but to my surprise, the belt looks completely fine.
I fear I might've actually blown the engine but don't know how to diagnose this.

So I have a 2012 Toyota Camry SE V6. Back in december I got into a front end accident, had the front repaired, (they did remove the coolant container and refilled it etch) Got my car back on December 22, coolant was full. A few days ago, checked again and i noticed the white coolant container was empty (there were some pink at a corner, i guess because the hose doesn't reach that low), i checked the metal cap, it was not "completely" empty just had a very very low layer of pink coolant. (i would say just some coolant at the surface)
I do recall a sweet burning smell maybe a month or 2 ago, but my engine light did not ever come on. When i refilled it, (my dad recommended to refill just half) I did that, a day later, i checked the levels again, it was empty again. so i refilled it to half again. i drove this morning for about 10 mins, its still at the same level (maybe i didn't drive it long enough?)
I'm freaking out whether i have been driving the car without coolant for that long, and whether there were any engine damage done (even though the engine light didn't come on) I have driven the car alittle over 5k since i got the car back.

I have a 1998 Camry V6 with 165000 miles. I had brake pads and rotors replaced on all four tires. Two days later, I noticed a flapping/knocking noise apparently coming from the rear of the car. It only happens after the car as been driving for 5-10 minutes. The noise increases in frequency as the speed of the vehicle increases and is unaffected by braking or bumps and gets louder the longer the car is driven. I took the car back and they re-checked all the brake installations and said everything was fine and the noise was nothing to worry about (of course I had to convince them that there really was a noise). They also said they inspected the tires and didn't find anything wrong. I have jacked the car up and looked under all tires and don't see anything close to the tires that could be hitting them. It sounds like a strip of rubber hitting a metal pan. I see no loose plastic guards or mudflaps. The tires were all replaced less than 2 years ago and they have been rotated regularly and visually appear to be in good shape.

About 3 months ago my Toyota Camry '03 lost control due to icy road and it turned around completely to the opposite direction of driving on a mild slope a few hundred meters away from my house on the community road. This occurred after I pressed the brake and the speed of the car is less than 5 mph. The rear driver side tire hurt the road curb and got flattened. The flattened tire was fixed the next day at Walmart and driving of the car (steering) appeared to be fine. However, I can now hear a rhythmical "kong, kong, kong..." noise when I drive the car and the noise become stronger the faster the car goes. In fact I can barely hear the sound when the speed is below 40 mph. And the noise occurs only when the car moves: no noise occurs when I step on the gas in the parking lot. What might the possible cause of this noise? Do I need to have a tire alignment?

When going short distances, half mile to two miles, and I turn off the car it will not REstart. Dash lights come on but engine does not make a sound. No clicking, no engine trying to turn over, nothing. After the car sits for awhile and cools off it starts up with no hesitation at all. If on the road for several minutes the car does not have this problem no matter how far or how many times I turn it off and on. The battery checks out ok. Someone said it could be a ground wire loose. What do you think. Is this something I could do myself?

I have a 92 Toyota GT...2 Door...2.2 liter engine...5 Speed ... It has just over 182,000 miles...ENGINE STRONG!
My Car has Been Cutting Off During Acceleration into 2nd Gear... At first I thought it was my battery post and the Grounded wire which was frayed, I replaced with New... problem persisted...I bought a new terminal for the Post...After Stopping and Going..
(When Car Cuts off...You can Crank it right up...No Problem...Began to accelerate and Cut off.. Start it...and go..Decide to Press Gas Down and ride the Clutch and Gas While Shifting and car Stays Cranked but I look like a Rookie Behind the Wheel and will Burn out My Clutch..So.. After I stopped and raised the Hood....I took the Negative Post Off...and Car Shut Off.. Bought a New Alternator...BAM...That's The Problem.. NOT!!..
4 Days later...Start out the parking lot...Car Cuts off..Same Problems All over again.. I took the Alternator to be checked..Fine..I took the Battery to be Checked and charged..Fine.. What Could Cause the Car To Cut Off after I hit 20 + Miles and Up..between Shifts....it Dies..? I need to Get to My New Job..and It's my only Means of Transportation...

We have had the TDI for exactly a year now, and have 33 000 km's on it already. In the past 2 months, we've noticed the engine cutting off for a second while driving. It can do this a few times during one drive and it does it at any time, not related to the temperature of the engine; it has done it wether it's cold or warmed up.
Brought it to the dealership today for regular maintenance, they explained to me that it was normal and it's called a regeneration process for the emission system. They couldn't tell me the frequency that this could happen. For our car, it happens at least 2-4 times a week even a few times within a drive. I don't know if it was the same thing but I was passing a car last sunday and while accelerating, the engine just shut off for that second and all of a sudden a big cloud of gray smoke came out the back.

My kia runs great then cuts off during driving, It starts up with no problem and may run with no prblem for some time. I have replaced the fuel pump and filter, had it diagnostic, the only code that shows is the oxygen sensor. It also have had the jiffy lube fuel system cleaning. any clues to what may be happening, the vehicle has 150k miles.

Our 1995 Toyota Camry shakes and makes a loud rattling noise while driving, but not every time I drive the car. The rear seat of the vehicle, especially feels the shake. The rear tires have been replaced and aligned, but still the shake/noise persists. Our mechanic has not been able to recreate the noise. It has occurred in the winter and summer with or without the heater and/or air conditioning on or off. Sometimes the shaking is so severe, I am afraid of what will happen, but I will stop at the next light, sit for a minute or two, and when the light turns green, the car goes, no shaking involved - everything is fine. I typically drive in town so speed is only 45 mph or less. The car has only 137,000 miles, and is well-maintained.
