Subaru - Forester :: Bad Cylinder - Overfilled Oil Tank - Damaged Camshaft Seal

Oct 22, 2011

The day before my road trip from VA to ME I had the oil changed in my 2006/120,000 mile Subaru Forester. Soon after getting on the road I noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from my engine. I called my mechanic and he said it was dripped oil burning off. about an hour later we noticed oil dripping from the engine and when we checked the oil we noticed it was overfilled. We then took it to a nearby mechanic who said they thought the oil tank had been overfilled and may have blown out the camshaft seal and that was the cause of the drip and oil burning. They said it was a repair that would take some time, but when asked the mechanic also said we would do no harm and it wouldn't be dangerous to drive so long as we kept the oil levels up.

An hour on the road and the car started to vibrate and lose power. So we took it to yet another mechanic (same group as the prior two) the next morning and they concurred that it was likely the camshaft seal but would take several days to repair, and diagnose and repair the cause of the vibration. after a week I was told that the repair to the camshaft had indeed fixed the oil leak but that with further examination it was discovered that the pressure in one of the cylinders was 20 lbs, not the 100lb it's supposed to be. So my question is - could there be a link between the overfilled oil tank, the damaged camshaft seal, and the cylinder.

Subaru - Forester :: 2005 CEL Blinking With Cylinder Misfire

My 2005 Subaru Forester just passed Rhode Island inspection last week. I didn't use for 6 days. Last night when we got home I moved the car and noticed a strong gas smell. This morning on I drove it cold on way to work right away I noticed lack of power at low gear (its automatic trans), a jumpy idle, and some smoke out back (not too much and looked whitish). Check engine light flashed a couple of times but didn't stay on nor flashed continuously. I know flashing CEL is BAD, so I went right back home and parked, didnt even drive a mile.

I'm thinking some sort of cylinder misfire.

Subaru - Forester :: 2006 Idling Roughly And 2nd Cylinder Was Misfiring

I have 2006 Subaru Forester that is idling roughly. 90k – oil change every 3k miles. Per diagnostic codes I learned that the 2nd cylinder was misfiring. I replaced the coil, spark plugs, ignition wires, and an airflow sensor. Yet, my car still idles rough. The check engine light is solid and the cruise control is flashing. The idling problem only happens when stopped… after I get high rpms there is no shaking. I had someone disconnect the battery and reset the computer and the lights stayed off for about a week and idling was fine. Week later – the problem returned. I think this an electrical problem, but not sure if mechanical.

Subaru - Forester :: 1998 - Rough Running / One Cylinder Has No Compression

will it hurt my 98' forester to drive it when one cylinder has no compression? They tell me it needs a valve job for 2,500. They already put a mass air flow sensor in, and replaced plugs and wires. Still got the miss, but I need the vehicle.

Subaru - Forester :: 2004 - Check Engine Light On / 4th Cylinder Either Low Or No Compression

Our beloved 2004 Subaru Forester has the check engine light on. We've been told that the 4th cylinder has either low or no compression. Is this fixable/worth fixing? Would you replace the engine? The car has 183K miles on it, and runs great! It is stuttering now, due to this issue, but otherwise - runs great and is in good condition!

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Overfilled Transfer Case Or Leaking Transmission Output Seal

I just changed transfer case fluid on my father's F-350 for the first time in 13 years. (over 230k). Removed fill plug first and fluid gushed out of the fill hole unexpectedly. Did not have catch pan ready, so made a mess. I thought it was just over filled form the factory, but too much was coming out to be simple overfill. Almost 2 qt came out of the fill plug.

Did some google search and found many Ford trucks have failed transmission output shaft seal and transmission fluid leaks out to transfer case, causing transfer case to overfill. I am yet to check transmission fluid level, but considering how much came out of it that probably is the case.

Now, how bad of the problem this really is? Will overfilled transfer case cause some serious problem? 4x4 is rarely used (once or twice a year in winter) on this truck and from what I understand transfer case doesn't really do anything in 2WD other than just passing output from transmission through.

There are no fluid leaking outside and repairing the seal would be a too much of work for me.

Also changed rear differential fluid for the first time and I was surprised how clean the fluid was. There were thin layer of black sticky residue (sludge?) covering everything, but the fluid itself looked clean and no visible metal shavings. I guess that is why Ford said it does not require change under normal condition.

Camry :: At What Mark Dipstick Represents Overfilled Tank?

A friend of mine who also owns a 4 cylinder 2000 Camry just recently changed the oil and oil filter in his car is fretting that he overfilled with new oil because he discovered he surpassed the full line on the dipstick by 3/16 of an inch. I told him the 3/16 of an inch past the full mark is not going to make his engine blow up and to not worry about it. But being extremely anal about these kinds of things he is insistent that he remove that 3/16 of an inch of extra oil.

Another of our friends (who is a certified mechanic) of many years told him that cars are somewhat designed to be idiot proof and going slightly past the full mark is not going to destroy the engine.

Prius (2004-09) :: Overfilled Master Cylinder Result In Damage?

Long Story short: Brakes replaced at local dealer (courtesy offer from Toyota Corporate). I paid dealer, submitted invoice and received reimbursement. Service tech replaced front pads and rotors. Everything seemed fine until the day I popped the hood to detail the engine. Noticed that the fluid level in the master cylinder was at the cap and the cap itself had "popped" due to the excess pressure in the system. Brought the car back to the dealer. I was reassured that after draining off the excess fluid, the braking system would be OK. I disagreed.

Passat (B5) :: Camshaft Seal Leaking - Burning Oil Smell In Car

My 2002 1.8 t has a leaky camshaft seal. The shop where I take the care insists that I should take care of it since it can cause some damage to other components. Another very trusted mechanic has told me that it is only a nuisance and the worst thing that can happen is that I would occasionally smell some burning oil inside the car when the HVAC is not in recirculating model. He also suggests using some engine cleaner and degreaser and that would take care of the problem. I think the seal leaks less than a teaspoon a year. The engine uses ZERO oil in between changes.

Corolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: Vehicle Shaking And Misfiring Occasionally - Cylinder Damaged

My daughters '09 Corolla was shaking and misfiring occasionally. When she took it to the shop the mechanic had it for a couple days and after many attempts finally reproduced the issue. After several diagnostics tests they determined it to be a damaged cylinder. We had the option of

1. replacing the engine
2. retooling it

I called around to a couple other mechanics and they told me the same thing. One particular mechanic (no affiliated with Toyota) told us that he had heard this happening on both the Camry and the Corolla. Sound like a manufacturer issues if it's been seen frequently.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: CEL On With Camshaft Position Sensor Code And Misfire On Cylinder 3

She is a 1999.5 Golf 2.0 (although, she just has a rabbit symbol on the hatch, is she a Rabbit or did someone remove the Golf badge?) I just bought the car, with less than 160,000 miles. The dome lights work sometimes, Door Ding works intermittently as well, but sometimes will "glitch" in other words it will be making the sound but it kind of stutters? Odd? The horn sometimes works, however it is very silent? Check engine light is on with a camshaft position sensor code and miss on cylinder 3. Someone told me to replace the "109 relay"... could this be the problem or is this the CCM?

Subaru - Forester :: Stumbling At Around 2500 Rpm

I have an '06 Forester XT 2.5 turbo that has, what I can only describe as a stumble around 2500 rpm. The car's maintenance is always up-to-date, and never has anything under 91 octane run in it.This started out when you had the cruise set and now does it all the time whether or not the cruise is used. I've had it to 2 shops including a Subaru dealer that had it for a month and couldn't find the issue. We've been through injectors, coils, maf sensor, etc. to no avail. The trouble code that we're given is a misfire in cylinder 1. We discovered, while trying to find the issue, that there was only 30psi in that #1 cylinder and the valve guides were the issue. So the motor was pulled, heads planed, etc. and new guides installed. Also, put in a new timing belt, and so on, that is usually done when the motor is out. They have done a leak down test and compression tests as well. This is my wife's car and she absolutely love it, so I need to get this figured out.
