Planning on buying an Impreza soon. Was at first thinking about the manual, but then saw that the mpg for stick was 2 miles less than that of CVT. Is the sacrifice in mpg worth the manual transmission?

View 5 RepliesI looked back through the DSG threads and didn't find anything regarding the direction in which you manually up shift using the stick shifter...towards the dash. This seems odd to me because if you are accelerating, your are forced into the seat, moving away from the shifting direction. The natural shifting direction would be towards the back. And vice-versa for braking and down shifting situations. Or is it just me. Can reverse the shifter to up shift towards the back?

View 12 Replies2007 G6 Problem occurs at slow speed with sharp turning, such as coming out or into the driveway. As the steering rack moves slowly it tends to stick and release 3 or 4 times when turning sharply at very slow speed. It makes a sound so loud even the passenger cam hear it and the driver can feel it in the steering wheel. Does occur while driving normally. The dealer says its a GM problem with no real correction. They greased the rack and said the problem would return soon, but it is not a safety problem. So far they have been right on both counts. Are there any real cures?
View 5 RepliesI'm thinking about getting the 2014 Subaru Impreza with the CVT transmission, w/o paddle shifters, and found that there is a manual mode in the CVT. How does that work if there aren't any paddle shifters or actual gears to shift to? (I don't know a lot about cars).
View 1 Repliesmy 2000 Subaru Outback Manual Transmission is stuck in neutral. I thought it might be the clutch so I pulled it out of the car and checked the clutch linkage etc. With the transmission fully removed from the car the shift lever does not move at all. My question is, if the transmission is fully removed from the engine should the shift lever function?

I was following a guy yesterday on a back road and saw it several times, and that's not the first one I've noticed.
View 3 RepliesI have a 1999 TC that has an intermittent blower problem.
1. The fan will not come on at any speed in manual unless the system is in AUTO )see #2)
2. When the system is in AUTO it only work intermittently, meaning that sometimes the system works (AC & heat) in AUTO and sometimes not. No real logic to it. When the system decides to work it works fine but only in auto. When the AUTO IS working the manual blower fan operation will still not work.
3. I tried running the diagnostics test but got no codes.
My 1997 Saturn SL2 with 5 speed manual transmission won't shift into first or second gear. When I shift into the location where first would be the car is in third gear. It shifts into 4th, 5th and reverse just fine, though the shifter is in the wrong position for those gears. I can wiggle the shifter in neutral and get it to move into the position where 5th and reverse are normally found, but it is stiff and makes a clunking noise when I move the shifter over to the far right side.
I have removed the center console and the bushing appears to be intact. Both cables are in their proper positions inside the vehicle and at the engine. One of the cables (the top one in the engine) has some wear and tear on the boot, but does not appear to be binding. Other than the stiffness and the clunking noise, the shifter seems to be working fine too.
I have a 1.8 Jetta and I realized yesterday that my first gear won't turn on what could be the problem..
View 5 RepliesI am in the nasty position of having to remove my 6-spd manual transmission to investigate the nasty whine in it. The dealer says $2300 to fix it and the parts are $100, so I am going to do it myself. I have been unable to find a repair manual yet for the 2010 Camry and I was wondering for step by step for removal of the tranny. I don't need a lot of detail, but it is nice to know the order in broad strokes.
View 7 Replies2004 Jetta 1.8T w/5 speed manual transmission. Bought the car this way, mostly for a parts car, but everything else runs and drives good, so if it wasn't for this issue it would be a decent driver.
Won't/can't select first gear. Seems like there is no "spot" for first, or that the shift mechanism has no where to go., locked out. All the rest of the gear selections work perfectly. Tried the cable adjust ritual, but it was fine-as I suspected. The shift assembly works/moves perfectly from the tranny end and the shift lever end. Not a synchro, it won't go in stopped, moving, running or shut off.
So, what's the probable best guess or best way to come to a diagnosis? Shift tower parts broken somewhere, or something like a shifting fork bent broken? Seems like if it was internal there would be other gear selections that would be affected. Any links to some diagrams?
So ive been having issues with my trans 6 speed manual making noise and took it to the dealer. They more or less told me the trans is done, something with the linkage, need a new trans and clutch. They also told me my warranty was void because there was indication of a cold air intake before i bought the car and have reason to believe it's due to abuse. I've only driven this car 3,000 miles and have taken care not to beat or sport shift the car to avoid this very problem. I can't argue the fact that the previous owner could have very well driven the car hard and the problem might have been a ticking time bomb. I guess my best bet is to find a used trans and install myself but really dont know where to start.
View 24 RepliesAt 56,000+ miles on my 2006 Forester, I was horribly shocked to learn while having 60,000 maintenance done that my head gasket was leaking. inclusive of timing belt replacement required. I have read some discussions in this vein, but none regarding a car with this few miles on it. It does not seem right. I have had other issues with this car, my 2nd forester. I do not know what I should do.
View 12 RepliesI have a legacy. Notice some slippage between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th. Also noticing an extreme burning smell when vehicle first gets started (for about 15 min) it's gagging it's so strong and pours in through defrost but can be smelled standing outside car also. Finally I parked in friends garage and notice some dark weird colored fluid on ground when I backed out, I dont know if it's oil or transmission fluid.

I was wondering exactly what kind of fluid do I use and how much fluid do I use. View 1 RepliesMy 2015 impreza w/under 100 miles would not start. It turned over but the engine would not engage. The dealership told me the electronics in the car drains the battery and I had to start my car every day. Sounds like garbage to me. I did not drive it for one day and it would not start and it is summer time. What's going to happen in the winter? I have a 1998 Honda with 218K miles that is very reliable but it is not AWD. I cannot believe Subaru would have such fantastic ratings on safety and all weather AWD and be cheap on this problem if it is one. I need a reliable car and that is why I bought a Subaru to get around in all weather conditions and be safe. What good is it if the car won't start? Reminds me of a Nissan I had years ago that would break down frequently when I drove it. I got rid of it at 34K and 3 fuel pumps later.
View 13 RepliesMy 1993 Celica, 1.6, 5-speed manual left drive shaft failed and I am trying to replace it myself. I have the new part in hand, but for some reason, the inner splined shaft does not want to go all the way into the transaxle. I have tapped the rotor end of the shaft with a mallet and tried to force it in, but everything Ive tried wont work.
My car is down for the count until I can get this drive shaft back in.
My ECS light comes on after driving about 15 miles. I checked computer to see what code it was sending. It was a 73. I looked up the code. It is the ignition pulse system. What is this and how can I fix it.
