Saturn - Sl :: 1993 - Noise From Below The Emergency Brake When Car Turned Off
Dec 9, 2013
Our 1993 Saturn SL1 wouldn't start this morning (this never happens). After we turned the car off, it made this "dugga, dugga, dugga" noise that seems to come from below the emergency brake. Even though the car has been off, the noise has been happening intermittently since this morning. We just replaced the battery a month ago.

My emergency brake works fine when I am parked nose down; it prevents my truck from rolling forward. When I'm parked nose up, the e brake doesn't stop the truck from rolling backwards. 2.3L 1993 ford ranger manual trans.

My 2007 Prius has started making an unusual sound. At first I thought it was some kind of pump or something, but now???
When I put on the emergency brake, the brake pedal or when I put the car in park or take it out of park and put it in D, it makes a "chuck chuck chuck" sound, not high pitched, but not a low sound either. It seems to be coming from under the hood on the left side. It sounds something like a belt slipping or a pump with a squeak maybe?
It does not appear to make this noise when simply depressing the brake while driving, so I'm not sure it's the same abs actuator issue.

I drive a 1997 Saturn SL1, 295,000 miles. Great car. Good gas mileage, very, very low maintenance. I cleaned the engine about three years ago with an engine cleaner (Gunk?). When I turned on the engine it started to make a loud noise. The best way to describe it is a loud whining noise. It appears to be coming from the AC. When I turn on the AC the noise gets quieter (but it's still annoying). The noise does not appear to have affected the car's performance, but it is loud and annoying. What the problem is?

While the emergency brake was set, I happend to lean against the rear driver side of the the car and was surprised to hear a clanking, slapping noise coming from underneath the rear of the car; seemingly near the left rear wheel. What I think I'm hearing is the emergency brake cable (I assume this is a rear wheel cable brake) slapping against the vehicle frame or wheel axle. Even opening and closing the rear passenger door caused the cable to slap against the car.
This got me to experiment a bit, so I rocked the car back and forth and side to side. It's the side-to-side movement that causes the noise. The emergency brake works when set. The noise disappears when I release the emergency brake.

When parking on an incline, say my driveway which is pretty steep, I engage my emergency brake. When I release the brake I get a creaking noise as I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway. Two questions is using the emergency brake really going to keep my car from rolling back down the driveway and does the creaking noise mean the emergency or rear brakes are being stressed by holding the car in an incline for several hours each day?
I really worry some days I am going to walk outside and my car will be in the neighbor's yard.

About 3 weeks ago my car,a 2007 saturn vue 6cyc., started making banging noises in the glove box when I start the car. The noise last for about 10 seconds and is very loud. The car runs great, no problems.

I have an '07 ES 350 and recently I ran into this problem where my emergency blinkers would turn on and remain on when I turn on my headlights. This occurs as soon as I turn my headlights from off to any other position(auto, fogs, on) and this happens every time. I tried pressing the actual emergency light button to try and turn it off, but that didn't work. I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the headlight from the electrical system, but that didn't solve it either.
The only way that I got the headlights to work without the emergency blinkers is by turning the brightness of the dash all the way down, so that the odometer light and all of that is completely dark. It's been fine since I bought the car 2nd hand in mid 2013 so I don't know why this is acting up all of a sudden. What's going on?

I have about 170k on my Saturn Sl2, but a rebuilt engine with about 80k on it. About 1/3 of the time when I brake, i hear a strange sound that sounds like metal on metal. I think it is coming from the front, possibly from the driver side, but it's hard to tell... I thought it could be a stuck caliper (they were in rough shape anyway) but the sound came back after I replaced them. I also have changed the pads and the rotors. It sounds like a lower pitch version of the sound a leaf spring makes when you drag it across concrete.

I am looking to purchase a 1993 Chrysler New Yorker and when I test drove it I noticed that every time the brake pedal was pushed a mechanical whirring noise was audible. This happened every time the brake was pushed whether the car was moving or not. The car brakes seemed to work fine and there were no other noises associated with normal brake problems. The noise seemed to come from inside the car. What that might be? Also, any other reasons to not buy a 93 New Yorker with about 115,000 miles on it for cheap?

I have a 1993 Saturn with very low mileage (roughly 36,000 original miles) that I inherited from my grandma about 5 years ago. Early in the summer (May/June), when I would turn the a/c on, I started hearing a low squeaking/squealing sound when I would come to a stop. When I would start moving, turn off the a/c, put the car in neutral/park, it would go away. Over the past few months, I have noticed the squeaking/squealing getting louder and more so at night when the lights are on and during the day when there is a lot of moisture in the air and it really squeals loud every so often when I start moving from a stop until I hit around 2000 rpm.
The car idles at around 500 rpm and that is when I notice the noise the most. I have checked the belt and it appears to be in good shape (no cracking or fraying, it appears to be dry) and the tension appears to be good and when I got the oil changed last month, the guys at the Valvoline Quick Lube said it looked good as well. With the noise coming more often at night when the lights are on (or during the day when it is raining and I have the lights on), I have thought about taking the alternator off and getting it checked at the local parts store to see if when it gets put under load, it squeals there and to see if it is functioning properly. Could it be the alternator or something else, like the belt?

I have a 1993 Saturn SC1 with 200K miles and two problems. I can run the AC on a hot day for nearly an hour, then the air flow fades away even though I can hear the fan still running. If I turn it off for a while, I can then turn it on again, and it runs fine for a while but then fades again. On a cold, rainy day, even though the fan blows fine out the dashboard vents toward me and my passenger, there isn't enough air blowing out of the vents below the windshield, which fogs up so I can't see.

Let my brother borrow my 98 S-10 and before he even got home with it he called and said the brake light was on. I figured it was the emergency pedal was down a little. Said there were no leaks. Got it back today and the fluid level is way down. Filled, but the low pedal is still there. Can find no leaks. Also the ck engine light is on. May not be related. Didn't get a chance to ck code.

Okay let me start by saying my car is APR Stage 1. The other day I was driving with my cruise control on and held in the accelerate button to speed up. After holding in the button for a couple seconds the check engine light and battery light flashed back and forth as if I changed some setting with the tune. Ever since that happened, if I turn the TCS off, the emergency brake light comes out and the error message 'check brake pads' is displayed on the MFI. Also, the weird part is that it's not just the light. The actual emergency brake is slightly on without pulling the handle. I can feel it when I accelerate. It's harder to get the car going. Once I turn the car off and leave it off for a few hours it goes back to normal. Why this is happening?

My friend's Emergency Brake is tricky: It usually doesn't hold, but pops off again. Its as if the 'teeth' somewhere inside were worn or maybe a ratchet has been rounded.

Do you use Emergency Brake every time you Park, and why?

I just bought a 2001 1.8t passat and the emergency brake the other day stopped working. The button is pushed in all the way and will not come back out, so it does not click when the brake lever is pulled up and will come back down when let go of. The brakes do work when the lever is pulled however. Also, keeping the car in 1st gear while parked is alright? Even on a hill?

I have a 2004 Santa Fe with the 2.7L V6. There is a recurring issue where the ABS and Emergency Brake light come on, followed by the fuel gauge dropping to E, then all lights dimming until they go out. The car continues to run, but if you shut it off it won't start for about 30 minutes, then it start just fine with full power. The alternator and battery have been replaced twice in the last 10 months, most recently 3 days ago. The problem persists. I did find the right downstream O2 sensor to have broken wires which were causing a short. I replaced the O2 sensor and wiring harness, which cleared all engine codes, however the problem does still exist.

Had this issue on my first Touareg as well as the replacement. When you pull the emergency release handle (firmly and all the way) it doesn't fully release the brake. You realize this when the vehicle begins moving and you get the "Release Emergency Brake" message in the MFI.
They replaced the emergency brake assembly. The service rep told me before he returned the car to me that his tech was less than satisfied with the design of the hydraulic assembly and that he expected it to develop the issue again. He was right. Two weeks later the thing is sticking again.

The emergency brake doesn't hold on my truck. It's two-wheel-drive. Is there any way to adjust it?

There is no tension when I try to engaging the brake and thus the brake itself doesn't engage as if the cable snapped or has become disconnected.
Lost the use of emergency brake?
