Saturn :: 1995 - Gas Pump Keeps Shutting Off When Try To Fill
Jan 28, 2013
The gas pump keeps shutting off when I try to fill my '95 Saturn, like it would when the tank is full, even when the tank is empty. This is a recent phenomenon, and it does it at every gas pump. I have to keep pulling the handle to get gas in the tank. I took off the filler tube and checked both it and the vent line. Both are clear. What could be causing this?

I have 2002 Ford Explorer and I have trouble filling it with gas. The pressure in the fill line keeps shutting off the gas pump. I have to slowly drizzle the gas in to fill the tank. Sometimes the problem is better, sometimes worse.

The gas pump/hose keeps shutting off when I fill my tank. The problem is progressively getting worse. No Codes. Truck runs fine. I looked at the filler neck and filler hoses. They appear to be original but no obvious signs of an issue...

I notice the gas nozzle clicks off all the time when I am filling my truck. Normally I just hold the nozzle up more and it seems to work.
F250. Slow fuel fill or fill nozzle keeps shutting off....

2006 Saturn Ion2, 2.2L, The car seems to run fine with no a/c, strong acceleration, 900RPM idle. When the a/c is turned on at idle, the revs drop to 400RPM and the engine shudders. At speed with the a/c on, the car shuts itself off and throws code U0100(lost communication with engine control module), emissions light, and flashes "PWR STR" and "COOLANT" on the dash.
My theory is: the a/c over stresses the motor, dropping the engine revs, causing the voltage to drop below 10v. The ECU then panics and shuts off the motor. Is this possible? I would like some reassurance before I start swapping out parts in the driveway.

I have a 1995 Toyota Celica 1.8L hatchback with automatic transmission. Car starts shutting down around 100mph. How to remove the governor or restrictor or whatever it is that's holding the engine from its full potential.

What is going on with my car! Anyways I am been having a reoccurring problem with my car that i cant seem to fix. I actually took it to a shop (MIDAS) and the mechanic left the car on for 20 minutes and even drove it around and said it ran fine, but of course on my way home it shuts off. But anyway car starts up fine but after being driven for15-20 minutes the car will shut off, usually at low to idle speeds (stop signs, etc). If i drive the car to work in the morning and leave at night i experience no problems.
Yet if i go to the gym and leave within a hour, i always expect the car to shut off on me so i assume something is being overheated? As far as when the car stalls, i am able to crank the car with no start, sometimes the car starts and turns off right away, sometimes it runs for a bit, and sometimes it wont start at all, only cranks. After 30 minutes the car will work again. When the car begins to shut down and stall, i've noticed if i apply gas i can keep the car half alive as if its trying to continue to work.

I have run in to this a few times over the years with different cars. Don't think it is the Gas Stations Pumps. When I try to fill up gas....it clicks off, like it is full but no were near full.

6th Gen 2007 Camry XLE V6, Chevron/87 octane/fill until the pump stops automatically.
So two fill-ups ago... the mileage range on the display showed like 410 miles, when I usually get ~380 miles.
The next fill-up said 380 miles, which was normal; but the tank was near empty at 340 total miles (driven + miles left). Noticed that gas cap "sticks" when tightening to 1-click. Used to click freely and "unclick". Now, it kind of makes a muted click and I have to manually back it up a little for a muted "unclick",
I fill-up the last time, and it says 340 miles range, and the needle was showing only ~7/8 of a tank. Driving it for a day and the total range (driven + miles left) is ~315 miles.
So... is the fuel level sensor (or whatever does that) broken? Is the filler neck damaged? Is the tank vent clogged? Is my gas cap messed up? Hopefully it's not something wrong with the engine or something.

After pumping for a few seconds the pump stops because it thinks the tank is full. I have been searching for other 2011 Sonata owners with this problem but can't find any. I see it on older cars, something about charcoal pellets, but not on new cars. Could this be charcoal pellets on this car? The car is still new, why would this happen?

I was filling up the Phaeton tonight when the gas pump malfunctioned. Instead of shutting off when the tank was full, it just kept on pumping until gas came spewing out of the tank. The side of the car (and my best pair of pants) got drenched in gasoline. I immediately went home, threw my clothes in the laundry, took a long shower, washed and waxed the car, and cleaned the seats with leather conditioner for good measure. The car still smells of gasoline, but not so badly now.
My question is this: Is there harm in filling the tank completely to the brim? Because my tank is now as full as it possibly can be. Is there anything I should do before I drive it again?

I have difficulty filling my gas tank in my 1996 Sebring convertable. The pump keeps shutting off as if it is filled. Thought it was a venting problem but my mechanic couldn't find anything.

Can't fill the tank in my 1981 Chevy 1500 Truck; pump cuts off after 7 gallons. I took the vent tube and the fill hose off and there are no blockages.

Son was unable to fill his car's gas tank, 2002 Elantra (but happens to all cars sometimes).
The vapor lock on the pump kept shutting the gas flow off.
This was caused by the tanks vapor exhaust being unable to exit while filling, so the only place to go was back up through the gas fill hole.
The charcoal filter had sprung a leak so the zillions of tiny little charcoal pellets pour from the filter into the rubber hose clogging it.
The Filter is $150 at Hyundai. Not available at AutoZone or OReilys.
Very simple to replace a couple bolts a few hose clamps.
Strange problem, thats no one at work had encoutnered before. A few Hyundai mechanics had heard of it and worked it before.
Also could be Purge Valve or Vent Valve solenoids...search EAP system too if your having this issue of not being able to fill your tank with gas, without 500000 vapor locks shutting the pump off!

I have a 2013 GTI manual 6 speed with 18K very gently driven miles. Yesterday I noticed coolant on the garage floor and checked the reservoir which was below the fill line.
Went to dealer this morning .....bad water pump. I asked if this was unusual for such a new car with low miles and service writer said yes. After googling water pump failures of GTi's I learned this was not the case.

About 3 weeks ago I bought 2014 Prius Two. Was purchased as A Certified Pre Owned. At first I thought I just got a bad pump at the gas station. It's now been 5 fill ups at three different stations and same problem every time.
The fuel pump clicks almost instantly when trying to fill. I've tried different angles and manage to get a few gallons in before it prematurely clicks. I've resorted to holding the pump at the minimum flow to to get a consistent flow until fill up.
Car is under warranty so will probably just take it to the dealer. If it something quick and easy fix I'd rather just do it myself over the weekend.. I've ran the gas low most fill ups and topped off.

My '97 Explorer is struggling to take on fuel at fuel fill. Started all of a sudden...At gas station last week I inserted nozzle and attempted to fill tank as I normally do. It would not accept fuel at a fast pace. It keeps clicking the gas pump trigger off. I keep squeezing and it keep clicking of every 1-2 seconds!! What can this be? What steps can I take to analyze before I start replacing parts at random?

As the title says, I have a 2014 Passat TDI that was bought brand new back in September. I now have 6,300 miles on it.
Anyways, started it up last night, and started backing down my driveway that has a bit of an incline. Basically, I just have to ride the brake into the street, no acceleration needed.
As soon as the car got into the street, the engine just stopped. Not stuttering or anything, just like I had turned the key off, but all electrical systems still on. Put it in park, foot on brake, and it would not even turn over, just a dead key.
So, turned the key off, removed key, opened door, and re-attempted to start. Engine started at this point.
Needless to say, I'm a little unnerved at a brand new $30K vehicle doing this at only 6K miles. Dealership can't get it in until next Thursday.
Also, I noticed that my fuel pump will randomly continue to run after shutting the vehicle off for about 5 seconds. Fuel pump is extremely loud and after shutting off the vehicle the pump sounds like this (make a fuel pump noise outloud and read) - "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee wee wee weeeeeeeeeee" and then shuts off. I've owned a slew of vehicles (5 other diesel trucks included) and not a one of them has done this.

My 06 f250 with the 5.4 has a hard time being filled at the pump. So I followed the tsb and replaced the carbon canister, filter box and solenoid with the kit from my local ford dealer. Before it was impossible to get fuel in. Now it is way better but I have to fill it up with the gas nozzle upside down in order to fill at full speed. I have blown out the vent with compressed air.

I have a 95 Saturn SL2 4 Cyl DOHC with 196k miles. This engine however has about 140k. Yesterday I was driving to work and it stalled and now will not start. It gives one attempt to crank, a single "err" sound about half a second long and then I get nothing. The radio still comes on and the dash lights work, though I don't believe all of them work to give the correct indications. The battery is not the problem. What may cause this?

I had a mechanic do a diagnostic on the battery, alternator, etc. on Monday and he couldn't find a thing wrong. I drove it home without a worry. Last nite, it wouldn't start. It reminded me of what used to be called (or still is called?) "flooded." My '95 Saturn SL2 cranked but never kicked in and/or turned over to start. This morning, however, it turned over right away, albeit very sluggishly. What's wrong? Bad gasoline?
