I drive a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. Yesterday, I drove to the store about 5 minutes away. When I went back to my car 10 minutes later, it wouldn't start. Wouldn't turn over, no clicking, just silence. Finally had to leave it there. When I came back 1 1/2 hours later, it started fine. Same thing happened to me this morning. Drove it 5 minutes, now it won't start. What could it be?
View 3 RepliesI enjoy your show and newspaper column. Here's my situation. I have a 2008 Grand Prix with a stinky problem. There's a terrible musty, moldy smell that comes out of my vents (any vents, i.e. dashboard, floor, defrost) after I shut off my air conditioning. When just the fresh air from outside is coming through the vents, everything is just fine. When I turn on my air conditioning, everything is just fine. When I turn off my air conditioning is when the funky smell starts.
Mechanic number one cleaned out the drain hole, sprayed anti-mold spray and foam through the air intake vents with the recirculation switch on and the windows rolled up. But the mold is still there. Mechanic number two shared with me that the only way to get the mold out is to disassemble part of the A/C unit, physically clean out and disinfect the unit and then add some other part that drain or dry the unit so moisture never sits in there and starts the molding process. Is that the best way to deal with this problem?
I have Jeep Liberty 2002 with 100300 miles. I having starter problem and the starter was replaced with a new one. Still I am having the same problem, the car can only re-start 30 minutes or more after I shut it off. The mechanic stated that he does not know what it is causing the problem.
View 11 Replies 1999 3.l L Pontiac Grand Prix. All was well until I had the Intake manifold seals replaced. They said the coils were rusty, so they were replaced along with spark plugs and wires. The car would then (at times) crank a little bit longer before starting. When I took it back, they said the fuel pump pressure was low, so it was replaced, but the problem persisted. This has been going on for about 3.5 years now, so not a fatal problem, but getting worse this fall.
I've had it in to 2 local garages that I trust and 2 local gm dealers, without any luck fixing it. Some say the fuel pump pressure is on the low end of normal, but I've been reluctant to have another put in. Lately, seems like when the car sits for several hours it either cranks longer to start or will almost start, but need to be cranked again. Seems like I'm either not getting enough fuel or perhaps too much?In the interim, I've had to replace a crank sensor and last week the transmission. Neither has had any impact on the starting issue, no surprise.
99 GTP 195k miles. Replaced fuel pump a few weeks ago. (Local parts store wanted $250 for an Airtex, which has been called junk by some posters. So I bought a salvage pump from a 2000 Buick.) Threw code P0440 after that, so I put the tank seal (o-ring) from the original pump in after applying Vaseline (instead of tank seal from salvage pump). No code yet.
However, the car has been slow to start since then. Once started, it runs great. But have to crank it for several seconds (5-6) to get it started. I just checked the fuel pressure. It's zero after sitting over night. Turn key on (no start), and it jumps to ~50 psi for a few seconds. When the pump turns off, however, it immediately drops back to zero.
99 grand prix gt. 4t65e trans. 170k miles. way above avg for life expectancy. 1-2 shift is ok. Will not shift into 3rd. If you keep increasing vehicle speed to about 45 or so, it will shift into 3rd and than immediately into 4th. 45mph is about 4k rpm. I can see the tach drop to 3k rpm for 1 sec or so and than it drops to 2k approx. It will stay in OD and does not slip. If I stay at 50mph or so and punch the gas, I can make it shift into 3rd gear and it will stay in 3rd as long as i give it 2/3 gas. Once i left off the gas it goes back to OD. Any theories why it wont hit 3rd on the way up but will easily drop from 4th down to 3rd whenever I want? I know, its time for a rebuild.

I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line at the fuel filter. It started up, and the pressure gauge went up to 54. I gave it some gas and pressure goes up to about 60 then back to 54 at idle. I sat and watched it for a bit then it died after about 5 minutes and the gauge went below 50 to about 48. I immediately tried to start again and the pressure actually drops a little while cranking to 45 and stayed there.
Whats weird is when I first started it up, I can hear the pump come on and it kicked the pressure up from 0 to 54. Then after dieing, I don't think I can hear the pump come on, and the pressure does not go up at all. I have a feeling tomorrow it will do the same thing, start up after sitting for awhile, then die after 5 minutes.
Does this sound like a fuel pump going bad? or does it sound like an electrical issue with the fuel pump?
I have a '99 Chevy 2500 diesel truck. After driving it at highway speeds for more than 20 minutes and turning it off, it won't restart. The problem seems to be in the battery cable and is definitely heat-related. In cold weather or after a fairly short drive, all it takes is popping the hood to cool off the engine compartment, and waiting. If the engine and/or the weather is too hot, that can take an hour. Then it starts just fine. I've cleaned the terminals and made sure the connections are tight. Two mechanics have looked at it and were stumped.
View 1 RepliesEngine starts then runs for a period of time until it warms up, then fans come on and then EGR clicks on and off every other second , then it eventually quits. Replaced the coolant temp sensor. And it never sets a code. Have checked wiring for shorts and nothing. Is it a ECM going bad?? When trying to drive it , it will only go about a half a block , then quits , Then will start up again.???

Truck is an early 1999 F250 Super Duty ext cab long bed, ZF6 swap. 164k miles on the dash, has the newer injectors and hpop from what I was told. It does have a 6 position switch, I typically keep it at the daily 70 horse gain tune. I do not beat the truck often. I don't tow often either.
Truck always took a few seconds longer to start than other 7.3s I have seen. So two days in row, after 8 hours of sitting in the sun, my truck did not wanna start right. Took about 5 minutes of cranking both days to get it to start. Then today on my way to work in the morning I started truck let it idle, everything seemed fine, Started driving and the engine just didn't sound right, but I figured maybe it was still a little cold. Continued driving, and it stalled out ( zf6) , I tried pop starting it but that only got me another block or two, after 10 minutes of cranking I got it to start up made it a half mile it shut off, same thing started and got it home. It cranked longer than normal but started at home after it I turned it off.
At work now so I have yet to check anything. Replacing CPS after work No smoke out of tailpipe, It is getting fuel, I checked the filter. I am no master mechanic, I do basic maintenance like oil changes, brakes, filters and censors my self. Anything more intensive I have not done. If it is not the CPS what else could it be, and how would I go about checking?
I just got new struts, brakes, rotors etc on my 95 grand prix. A few weeks later my ABS light went on.... Do I have to get it fixed right away?
View 11 RepliesI got my car from an auction and I apparently had to do work to it and we got most problems fixed but now when i saw my fuse box i saw their wasn't a fuse in the radio so i put on in there and it can on so I thought cool it works so i turned my car off and the radio stayed on and i thought, bad fuse so i got a new fuse put it in and my car was still off and the radio stayed on. So i can't have a radio because my battery will drain. The ignition works i got a new one installed it perfectly my car is a 2000 Pontiac grandprix gtp supercharged. I've only had it for about 3 weeks ...

View 2 RepliesHottest day ever on Planet Earth and my air conditioner in my Pontiac decides to throw hot air in my face! Luckily, for my female companion, she gets ice cold air. This 2002 Grand Prix 40th Anniversary edition has 236,000 miles, I never once had a problem with the air conditioner in the past (have thought about contacting GM asking what they did right in this car)This model has dual climate control. I noticed that in turning the selector knob on the dash climate control panel, there is hot air in the vent, bi-level, heater and defrost, but cold air comes out on the passenger side. The interior temperature functions are all similar on the '97 through '03 models of Grand Prix, just wondered if this is something I can fix, or do I need to visit a Pontiac dealer to have it diagnosed (and spend a lot of money)

Which means it may start out sticking occasionally and progress to sticking more often and finally staying on/off permanently? If u get the code/symptoms 1 time, does it usually mean it will happen again, soon?

It does not vibrate when I turn left. I have new balanced tires, replaced both front tie-rod ends, and the rack and pinion by a certified GMC mechanic. What could be the problem?
View 1 RepliesWe were driving home yesterday and all of the sudden the car started to over heat and we could smell antifreeze. We turned the ac off and put more water in it. Today we just had to make a short trip somewhere (we were planning on having it looked at first thing Monday morning). The temperature gauge never showed it overheating but as we pulled into our driveway we heard a knocking sound and it just shut off. Iit may just be a leak and it caused the car to over heat??

View 5 RepliesWe have a grand prix and had the water pump replaced. Soon after this the fuel pump went out. We replaced it 2 more times within a few weeks. Bought another one and this time the car may have run a period of 4 to 5 months before it went out. We have found by banging on the gas tank, and by turning the car on while someone bangs on it, you can hear the pump come on and start the car. Well, once again this week we have had the pump changed and I was about to leave work and the car would not start. Banging on the tank allowed me to be able to start the car... What is going on with the pumps or what is making them go out...???

View 12 RepliesI took of the handle panel on the exterior of the car to adjust the rod so the door would open easier. NOW THE DOOR WONT OPEN AT ALL!
Its a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE.
I've tried removing the door panel from the inside, but it seems useless because the retarded vertical handles cant even be accessed from the door panel.
