I have a 99 VW Passat, it is making a loud buzzing noise as I accelerate to speeds above 20-25mph. The noise sounds like a baseball card in your bike spokes (or a room fan) does. The noise disappears when I push the clutch in. Here's the really weird part: when revving the engine as it's parked in neutral, there's no sound. What the heck is going on?

I find that I have to change gears about 10 miles sooner than I should in order to stop the noise. But now it's happening in 5th gear occasionally too, and of course I can't go to a higher gear to make it shut up. What could this mean?
View 3 RepliesI took my first road trip last weekend in my new-to-me 2010 Tiguan. At speeds over 70mph, there is a quite loud buzzing noise from the front of the roof area. It sounds like 2 pieces of metal are slapping together at a very high rate of speed. I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be. It is really, really annoying. So much so, that I may take another car for my NYC to Florida trip next month. I'd really like to take the Tiguan though...
I have the panoramic roof - it all seems tight and has no rattles whatsoever. There are no loose moldings, no gaps in the windshield molding. The roof rails appear to be tight, however the front of the right one is slightly raised off of the roof surface. I was going to try to tighten it somehow, but don't know how to even access the screws that hold it down.
OK, I recently purchased a 2009 Passat 2.0 & love the car with the exception of one thing that's driving me crazy. When slowly accelerating & the RPM's are between 2-3000 rpm there's a loud buzzing noise from the engine. (Sounds like a kazoo) Again, it only happens when accelerating slowly & will happen at all speeds.
View 8 RepliesIn Drive the engine revs but wont accelerate more than 25mph. D1, D2, and reverse work as usual. Fluid is dark, but no debris, no burnt smell. Should I change the fluid & filter? The shop said that would make it worse.
View 1 RepliesFor the past few months I've been hearing a loud fan-like buzzing noise coming from the passenger side of the front of the car. I don't know that much about cars, but it almost sounds like the engine is racing or something is spinning too fast. It has gotten increasingly worse, and seems especially loud at high speeds on the highway.
It is not the heating/cooling fan - the noise is present when the heating/cooling system is turned off.
2008 Passat 45k. No accidents. Towed twice on flatbeds due to bad fuel pump. Tires were rotated every 10k or so.
I'm wondering if there are any suspension (or wheel) issues that can lead to maybe tire wear and a loud oscillating noise. I had factory Goodyear Eagles 235/45-R17's that started to develop a very loud speed-dependent oscillating noise that definitely came from the tires, but I can't tell if it's one tire or more than one. I just had them replaced though I was not quite yet down to the wear indicators. My new Continentals are of course pretty quiet, but occasionally I think I hear very faint oscillations again on certain surfaces at high speed.
I'm worried that I might trash these new tires. I had to have an alignment/balance/rotation at about 30k due to minor steering vibrations at highway speeds. The noise started around 37k and got louder and louder. About this same time I had a flat tire that was immediately repaired; I noticed uneven wear on this flat tire which I attributed to the previous minor alignment/balance problem. I usually find out about any low pressures by the dash light, so I'm pretty sure my tire pressures are usually good. I rotated at 40k with a minor improvement that got bad again after about 1k.
I'm experiencing a weird problem with my Passat (2000 TDi 110), where the brake pedal is buzzing at my feet when braking from slow speeds. If I am doing around 5-10mph and lightly apply the brakes, it sometimes buzzes in the peddle and I can't apply full pressure (this can be tricky when behind another car!), but if I take my foot off the pedal or wait around 3 seconds, the buzz and pressure restriction goes and then I end up braking quite sharp as the pressure releases. The buzz is quite audiable and can be heard by others in the car and sounds quite electronic. Pads and Discs are fine, they will need replacing soon, but this issue has been going on for a while, so I don't think it's related to them.

Symptom: when driving, occasionally there is what I can only describe as a fairly loud (but not overwhelming - radio easily drowns it out) hissing+buzzing noise. It's a bit like listening to a small plastic gear grind at a very high speed with a bit of a hissing as a backdrop. It only happens occasionally, and I haven't identified any glaring rhyme or reason to when it happens.
What I can say is I've observed it around shifts on fairly strong acceleration, I've observed it climbing long hills, and I've observed it when cruising ~60mph on the freeway. It SEEMS like it is sensitive to the gas pedal - when I hear it, if I depress the pedal more and accelerate I tend to move beyond it, but if I let the pedal off and decelerate (thinking of the 60 mph freeway case here) I can bring the sound back. And if I continue to decelerate we move past the noise.
So, I can't really tell if it is RPMs, or speed, or engine load, or...
A little about my history with the car: I bought it only 2,000 miles ago, so I can't say much about what is "normal" or has been going on for how long.
A little about the transmission - I know they have a very bad rep. I had the trans fluid changed with the correct type right after purchase. It generally shifts ok. There are occasional delays going from reverse into D, and sometimes shifts on acceleration are less elegant than you'd hope, but it seems to generally function as a 4-speed transmission ought to.
This noise is something failing, and given that seems to relate in some way to speeds/loads/possibly shifts I hope this isn't a sign the transmission is going to suddenly give out.

Ratchet buzz noise my truck makes. Is not present until motor warms up. Noise is not present as much at idle but when you accelerate upwards to 1800 RPMs it makes such an obnoxious buzzing noise its embarrassing. Noise seems to come from top center area of motor.....
I have a 2002 Jetta GLS 2.0 4-speed automatic, 151,xxx miles... I have only owned it a couple of thousand miles, so I can't offer much on what is "normal"...
The issue I am having is as follows: I sometimes get a strange buzzing/hissing noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment ~45 degrees to my right while driving. It's very hard to describe - the best I can say is it sounds a bit like a little plastic gear is spinning/grinding at high rpms, yielding a buzzing noise, and there is a hissing-like sound as a backdrop.
The sound happens only occasionally (but seems to be happening much more frequently, which is worrisome). I have heard the sound in different driving scenarios, so I can't say "it only happens when...". However, it DOES seem to be sensitive to throttle and driving conditions in some way. I have heard it while a shift is taking place, I have heard it under load on a long incline, and I tend to hear it right around 60mph. Interestingly, in the 60mph example, can make the sound go away by accelerating past 65, or by decelerating down to ~50... it seems like there is some kind of transition taking place at 60 that fosters the sound?
The transmission is generally functional - I had the fluid changed right after buying it (with the correct fluid), and it generally shifts ok. It does have some of the quirky behavior the transmission is known for: occasionally hesitates to go from R to D, sometimes shifts while driving are less subtle than they should be. But I'd say as a whole it operates as a 4-speed transmission would be expected to.
However, since this strange noise is getting worse, and seems to be related to shifts/load/andor speed in some way... I am worried about trans health. What to check? Because it is intermittent, and doesn't exist at idle and rarely appears when going around the block good luck getting a mechanic to observe it...
I've suddenly developed a loud buzzing noise from my air-con system. I checked the hmaservice website, but the images don't look anything like what I have behind my glove box. I have a right-hand drive vehicle.
hmaservice says to remove the outside-air/recirc cable, and the picture shows this coming in from the left, where the center console would be on a LHD car. Mine comes in from the right of course. That is where the mirror imaging ends!
The service pages say that the filter sits behind this cable, and there's some sort of "hook" to remove to open a flap for the filter. There's no hook or anything like the images on my car.
I am having a strange issue with this vehicle that the dealership can't figure out but it doesn't surprise since here they are a bunch of idiots there anyways....well here it goes....when i start the vehicle there is a fairly loud "buzzing" noise coming from the drl module mounted on the front right side fender, the module feels like the relay inside is clicking extremely fast but not actually staying on, the drl's do not come on however the high beam indicator on the dash is illuminated. This will go away when i turn on the low beams, but i still have no high beams. There is a slight flicker within all the interior lights and headlights which leads me to believe there is a ground issue. I am unable to obtain any schematics for this part of the electrical system to be able to back probe and try to isolate the issue.... The vehicle seems to be fine as long as you turn the low beams on as soon as you start it other then the slight flicker in the lighting inside and out.....
View 3 RepliesFor about a year and a half I have had an "undiagnosable" noise that started as an intermittent metallic buzzing and has evolved into a constant whirring/grinding noise. The tempo of the noise increases when accelerating; occurs at all speeds and at idle. People say they know when I am approaching they can hear my car from about two blocks away. My regular 20 year mechanic checked transmission, replaced timing belt (at 65K; now have about 74K); all idler pulleys; checked alternator; He thinks is is the AC drive pulley on the compressor; Hyundai dealership did not know what it is; laymen have suggested is is a power steering pump, reservoir issue. Power steering fluid level is fine. Otherwise, the performance of the car is fine.
Engine is 3.5L V6; 2004, about 74+K

My 2007 Saturn Vue Hybrid has started to sound like a muscle car when I accelerate and maintain speeds over 20 mph. The RPMs are appropriate, there are no idiot lights on, and the battery appears to be behaving as usual. Also, the dash and radio lights dim and/or blink out intermittently.
View 2 RepliesI have an 06 Beetle 5 cylinder, and just the other day, after getting a new battery and they installed it, when I'm driving and step on the gas into overdrive, it gets really loud, almost like a knocking or loud muffler that has a hole it it. However, it doesn't do this when I'm in park and step on the gas. Only in drive. It still has great power, but is loud now. I'm worried that the shop did something to mess it up, but they won't check it. There is enough oil in the engine.

This happened recently in a VW Golf I had rented: While driving down a mountain in a tunnel in Norway, with the clutch depressed, there was a loud POP noise.The clutch became engaged, and the clutch pedal did nothing. I'll spare you the details of the harrowing aftermath, the language barrier issues in the sticks of Norway and such. In the end, the rental company is charging us a couple thousand bucks for breaking their car. I maintain it was not Driver Error. My local VM service manager indicated that the Slave Cylinder on the Golf has been a problem for years, and is probably what went bad, but - as a rep of VW - is not willing (allowed) to put that in writing. The garage that fixed the Golf indicated it was Driver Error. I'm guessing everything tranny-wise got beat up when the Slave gave out, making it look like I'm a bonafide Clutch Masher.
View 19 RepliesI have a 2013 VW Sportwagen TDI. I have been driving with my windows down and recently started hearing a noise (don't hear it when windows are up). The sound only seems to appear when I first start driving the car (after a few miles it seems to stop or at least is much less frequent), as I slowly (normal) accelerate and especially as I turn into a corner... I hear a loud "ticking" sound. It "ticks" 6-12 times (over about 5 sec) and then stops altogether. The sound has a very metallic character.
I looked at a youtube video demonstrating diagnosing and repairing of the CV joint(s) and am not convinced this is my problem. The tone and frequency of the "tick" sound shown in the video is way different than what I am hearing with my car.
I have a 2005 Avalon Limited. A couple of weeks ago I put the car in reverse and I started hearing this loud buzzing noise coming from the rear window area. I narrow it down to the rear window sunshade. It also makes this noise when pressing the button to lower the shade and maybe sometimes rising it. I know it has something to do with the relay or motor when the signal is sent to it to lower it, because a lower the shade signal is sent when the car is put into reverse or button is pushed. How to find the motor or relay without taking the rear seat out. Right now I would rather just disconnect it to stop the annoying buzzing noise. Where can I find a service/maintence manual to maybe find out how to disconnect it.

Whenever i'm in traffic for more than 20 minutes (which is about everyday) it starts to make this loud buzzing noise. Seems to be the way my car is telling me that it does not want to be in traffic. I can sure relate. Me neither. When the weather gets hot, my car does the same thing. Can you relate to my car as well?
View 7 RepliesBackground: I brought my R in for service last week because the AC stopped working. I ended up needing the compressor and the fans replaced. I picked my car up and drove it home with no problems. The next day I drove it I started to hear a rather loud buzzing noise that sounded like something was rattling loose from the front passenger side of the car behind the dashboard. It was loud enough to hear over the stereo while driving on the freeway.
Thinking something was wrong with the newly installed fans I brought the car back to the dealership and now they're telling me the fuel pump needs to be replaced. From what I understand, the fuel pump is in the back of the car under the rear seats and attached to the gas tank. I explained to them that I'm a bit confused because the sound is clearly coming from the front of the car but the mechanic there insists what I'm hearing is the fuel pump. Am I crazy or does what they're saying sound reasonable?
I tried looking at a couple YouTube videos that had sound of a VR6 fuel pump gone bad but the sound was nothing like what I was hearing.
