Oldsmobile - Alero :: Squealing Sound Suspected To Be A Loose Serpentine Belt
Feb 8, 2013
My daughter has a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero with 120,000 miles on it. She tells me it is making a squealing sound which I suspect is a loose serpentine belt. But I'm 18 hours away and can't diagnose it for her.

I had my serpentine belt replaced 3 months ago because it was starting to shred. Yesterday it broke again. The garage said the second time was caused by a problem with the crankshaft pulley. Shouldn't they have noticed a problem with the crankshaft pulley the first time it was replaced?

My daughters 96 cav has a bad squeal coming from serpintine belt. I tried belt dressing and it threw the belt. I didn't notice any cracks/dry rotting on belt. I put the belt back on but it is still squealing.

I have troubles with what I thought would be a basic job: removing the belt on my 2004 Solara so that I can remove the alternator. I can't get the belt loose enough to slide it off, no matter how hard I try.
The wrench I'm using is about 12" long, I'm a big guy and I've done powerlifting in the past, meaning I can apply lots of strength on that wrench. I've just watched a youtube video of a guy with the same engine removing his belt, and he exerted a lot less effort for a lot more wrench travel. I thought that using a breaker bar is extreme.

New to the hyundai world. My belt is squealing under low rpm load. I want to change it out but I don't see how to? I am mechanical I just don't see a tensioner. How would i go about changing it?

How do I know if my belt is a little loose? My tach and a/c die intermittently and I'm thinking the belt might be slipping. It seems old and it flaps a at the top at idle but not when reved higher. Can this be adjusted by moving the alternator? Serpentine Belt Proper Tension on 190D 2.5...

Actually above + an interesting mystery.. Late last spring I began hearing a noise of constant pitch (sounding like someone sanding wood) when the engine was cold---Louder when it was colder/cooler. As the engine warmed up the noise went away. Throughout the summer,No Noise. n. Late summer broken water pump replaced along with hoses/belts. No noise until, temps in AM in the 40's.
Now that same damn noise is back.Only LOUDER! Same pattern>>as engine warms noise softens and goes away. My ear suggests noise is coming from the tensioner pulley (But, I've been fooled before)As to the question above, Do I tighten the belt on 'This vehicle' using the tensioner pulley or do I have to use the "Pry the Alternator forward" method.? One last thing, while the noise is occurring it does get louder with acceleration but is soon blocked out by normal engine noise.

My serp belt started squealing so I pulled the thermostat housing to inspect the rubber gasket. It looked OK, but I cleaned up both surfaces and replaced with a new gasket, and put it back together. The housing was replaced just a couple months ago along with new hoses. It was not corroded and OK to reuse.
Started the truck up and saw a slowish/steady drip of red Cat ELC dripping on the driveway. Opened the hood up again and carefully inspected around the thermostat housing - no coolant is leaking there.
I did notice the same slow/steady drip coming from just behind and beneath the thermostat housing. See in pic, this is where it is dripping. One other question, what is this plug for on the side of the water pump?

So I drove my car (2000 vw golf tdi auto) to work fine. When I started it to drive home, it squealed and then all of a sudden stopped squealing so I popped my hood and looked and the belt can fit 2 fingers under it. Is there anything I can check diagnose this? I hear it could b a tensioner pulley.

So this car has only 50k miles. It was really cold in the sierra (around 20F) and the car started making a squeaking sound. I assumed it was just belt warming up, but when I opened the hood later, I saw shredded plastic. No CEL's! Seems to run smooth.
Where this came from? Is it part of the serpentine belt system?

I have 1997 F250 LD since i bough it has been doing this chirping sound coming from the serpentine belt and the pulley area but when the truck has been working for 15 - 20 min it goes away
This is apart from the from the problem before I think the fan clutch is broken because when I start the truck I can hear the fan going at the same speed of the engine is that normal ? even when the truck is cold

Serpentine belt on a 2006 Honda Odyssey fraying and then ripping into the timing belt causing that belt to break? I recently had this scenario given to me as the cause of my recently replaced timing belt breaking.

2006 6.0l ... I've read all over for tips on routing this belt and everyone plays it off as being some simple '20-minute' task. I'm on my 4th hour on this now.
I can't figure out how to route the belt around the tensioner pulley, circled in the picture (from another thread). Everyone glosses over how to do this and I can't figure it out.
It seems like the only way to get it on is to bend the belt and slide it between the pulley and the block, but that I just can't reach the blasted thing.

My husband bought this car 12 days ago. Had NTB check it out and they said we were good to go.
This afternoon, out of nowhere the car started getting usually hot, even though is was almost freezing outside. (Pic of temp below)
I pulled over and let the car idle for about 10 minutes. It cooled down by an amount so small its not even worth noting. I decided to try to make it home. As I drove it started to drop in temp... The car started sputtering as I slowed down at a red light. It started to shake. Then it cut off. I think I made this worse because I keep stepping on the gas hoping to get it back on. It did but it shook worse and anything close to 20 mph made it shut off again. It did this a total of 4 times before I made it home. Each time I stepped on the gas repeatedly to get it going again.
Once home I popped the hood and the pictures below are what I saw. Its in what I believe to be the radiator overflow. I checked the oil, and I do not see it there. I got down on the ground and looked for other leaks but all I see is the gunky stuff. The consistency is light very watery caramel. There was like smoke coming from the engine and it looks wet (included below).
Called my local repair shop and they are quoting me 3 grand. They said I need to replace the engine. My husband can't get to the car for another week and it is our only vehicle.

There is a car i am interested in buying but the person selling it says the water pump is going out. The car is an Oldsmobile 2003 Alero with 141000 miles on it. How much would it cost to fix this water pump and how can i check to see how its working?

The car is a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. At some point a little ways back, the cruise control stopped working. Checking the brake lights, I discovered that the brake lights were also out (all 3 - two on the side and the one on top). I checked the fuses and they looked fine, and I even swapped a spare 20A fuse to the stop lamp spot just in case. To no avail there, I replaced the brake light switch. This also did not fix the issue. Anything else I can/should check?

My 2000 Oldsmobile Alero's gas pedal sticks when its 70 degrees or higher outside. I can drive it all winter long without it sticking, then when the weather gets warm it starts again. I have to pull the pedal back up with my foot and it unsticks. I have replaced the throttle cable with one from a junk yard, but it does the same thing.

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. Whenever my gas gauge gets to about 3/4 tank, my car acts as if it is out of gas. I know my fuel gauge is working and that my car has gas. I was told that it was most likely the fuel pressure regulator valve so I had that replaced but it hasn't worked at all. Is it my fuel pump? Or what else could it be?

Have a 2000 Alero. Mechanic says oil on ground is from leaking head gasket. $3000 to repair, or buy rebuilt engine for about the same. I thought head gasket leaks were into the coolant, not outside. Is this legit, including the cost? Valve cover gaskets were replaced earlier this year. Should I get another opinion? Other possible sources of leak?

After I turn left from a stop my 2002 Alero pulls hard to the left for a while. Then after a while the car tracks straight. The same happens when I turn right from a stop; the car pulls to the right for a short time - then tracks straight. I checked the tie rods - they are tight.
