Is it normal to experience a distinct clunking noise when downshifting into first gear? My dealer indicates this is normal but I don't want to risk damage to the tranny if it is not normal.
View 3 RepliesI have an '05 Chrysler 300C AWD with approximately 65k miles. The transmission makes a distinct clunking sound when downshifting and I am seeking advice about the cause and solution. For example, I live on a hill and when I slow down at the bottom of the hill the car will downshift and there is a clunking sound. This happens frequently when I am slowing down. In the past year the transmission quit 3x, in all cases the car would start and operate fine but would not go into gear - it would idle but nothing would happen when I put it in gear. The first two times the dealer kept the car for several days and made various adjustments and the car eventually worked again. The third time the Torque Converter was replaced, but the clunking noise continues.
View 3 RepliesGo drive around with windows down and in D accelerate normally through 3rd gear then begin to stop and let the trans start downshifting itself. At the end of the 3/2 and the 2/1 downshifts, do you hear a distinct click. You shouldn't have to try to hard to hear it if you have it. drivers window down and radio off I hear it, every time.
View 10 RepliesMy 2001 jeep cherokee sport had a transfer case boot replaced a few months ago where the "oil spinner?" is near the rear portion. Before that went out i had periodic noise that i narrowed down to the transfer case using a mechanics stethoscope. Now i have a cluncking noise with gear grinding sounds periodically between 15-35 mph. I have annecdotal evidence from another forum that it may be the oil pump in the transfere case related to a TSB, yet i cannot find this TSB. Am i on the right track? It appears that i can get an oil pump for $60 but i have to consider dropping the case myself and pulling it apart.
View 3 RepliesThe history: I have a 98 ford explorer 156k miles. V6 automatic AWD w/ 4WD. I recently took it in for a rebuild on the transmission due to 3rd gear slippage. When I picked it up (after business hours) the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with code lights about 4wd & OD. It drove fine and I needed the vehicle so I took it and called the mechanic the next day. He advised me if they did something wrong they would fix it but he would have to run the codes to know what was going on. He told me if it drove fine it was ok to take my time about coming in. Since it was an hour drive (and time off work) I waited till the following week. They ran the codes and determined that they had forgot to "plug my 4wd in" and it was throwing every code possible for that system. Lol...
The problem: During the week I drove it I noticed a distinct grinding / chunking noise when I punched the gas hard at any speed in any gear. It happens about 85% of the time and is sometimes light noise and sometimes very bad.
I knew previously that I had bad ball joints so I figured it was that issue making a grinding noise based on the truck rocking back when I gassed it hard.
After about 2 weeks of hearing the grinding occasionally, it gets to bothering me so I go get the ball joints fixed. New ball joints and it still grinds... Now Im really worried it the transmission so I go back to the transmission mechanic yesterday (another half day off work and hour drive) and he test drives it. Tells me it is the transfer case going bad. Also tells me it wasnt like that when I picked it up because they 'test drive' every car after the work is complete (but somehow didnt notice the flashing codes on this test drive).
The question:
Is it possible while rebuilding the transmission or installing it, that they damaged the transfer case?
Are these systems connected directly to one another?
Is it possible that my 4WD being unplugged for a week or so of driving could have caused an issue in the transfer case?
Is it possible that if the 4WD was 'unplugged' the AWD may have also been disengaged and as a result caused an issue in the transfer case?
Is it likely that its just normal wear on two closely related systems and I should just suck it up and get it fixed?
Started happening yesterday. If I start the car I get 3 very distinct clunking sounds that I can also feel in both the clutch pedal and brake pedal. Then the car runs fine. No other issues I can find while driving, even driving a little aggressive. Then when I shut off the car I get the same clunking/shaking that I can feel in the pedals and hear. Sounds like something is broken but I can't figure out what. Only happens as the engine goes from 0 to idle or idle or 0.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that is making a loud clunking noise when I first put the car in gear. I start the car, put my foot on the brake, put the car in R and I hear a creeeeaakkk, clunk! noise coming from the front, passenger side of the car. I back up out of the driveway/parking spot, put the car in D and get a slight clunk! noise out of the same area again.
At first, I thought this was maybe a ball joint or a tie rod failure, but a friend of mine and I took the front wheels off of the car this past weekend and I gotta say, everything was found to be in solid shape. Nothing loose, bushings are in good shape, boots are in fantastic shape, no loose wheels that can be moved in ways they shouldn't move. After getting the noises and clunks to happen again, my buddy's opinion is that it's my transmission having a tough go of it and that I should take it to a transmission shop. Is it a transmission thing?

Never did anything with the transmission fluid since I've owned the car. I bought it in 2010 when it had 80,000 miles (129,000 km) on it.
98 acura 1.6 ... (automatic transmission) i was at a stop sign in the rain and accelerated only to hear a clunking noise and it sounds like its spinning around and clunking and it hits something on its way around every time. clunk clunk clunk clunk. when i put it back in park i can feel what ever is spinning stop in the gear shift stick.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2006 GLI 6speed manual, and am having a weird noise when doing certain things. The best way to describe the noise is perhaps clunking? kinda like if you put a ball in a metal container and then tilt it, and the noise that the ball makes when it hits the side of the container is what i hear. It sounds like its coming from the underside of the car and doesn't really happen unless I accelerate quickly, turn at a little bit of a faster rate, or slow down alot.
At first i thought it was infact a ball or something rolling around but I haven't been able to find anything of that nature in my car. It sounds like it could be coming from the passenger side near the glove box or under the center console. After getting info about a clunking noise and how it can be fixed by tightening a few bolts on the underside of the car. As i am unsure if they are experiencing the same clunking noise I think i hear, i decided to ask this on a new forum. I think its either loose bolts, or perhaps something with the shocks or struts.
I had my friend of mine who is a mechanic change my struts out this weekend. I had clunking noises from the right strut Toyota and also a tire place said I needed new struts. So I got them replaced now both sides are clunking see the YouTube video.
View 7 RepliesPosted a while back about a rattling/clunking noise coming from my front suspension. Since my car had nearly 100k miles on it and was still all stock, I went through and replaced ever single part of the front suspension. (Control arms, ball joints, got some Koni coil overs, strut mounts, sway bar end links, swar bar bushings). Turns out the noise wasn't actually related to the suspension. I've got massive play in both of my front axles. They make horrible rattling/clunking noises going over any sort of bump, even the REALLY small ones.

View 7 RepliesI have a Pontiac Montana minivan SV6 that is making strange clunking noises from possibly the rear or middle of the van when I go over a bump, large or small. I have had it in to our local mechanic and the local tire/repair shop and transmission shop. They have not been able to locate a problem other than agreeing that there is a noise.
Our mechanic replaced the front struts and strut mounts, the rear shocks and has gone over the entire suspension and transmission more than once. The noise is very loud, like something is broken but despite three separate shops checking it out nothing can be found.
Any possibility is could be something with the automatic side doors, such as the motor being loose or something strange like that? If it didn't have this clunking sound the ride would be very smooth and quiet. It doesn't affect the ride at all. The other bit of info here is that we haven't owned this van for very long, we bought it as is thinking that it needed shocks or struts. They've been replaced but the sound is still around!
I figured out what was causing my small clunking noises in the front end.. They were faint, but you could hear them at low speeds..
Front sway bar bushes and end links.. Replaced mine with auto7 bushes and moog endlinks.. They didnt "feel" loose or wobbled but replacing these parts got rid of my clunks..
Only downside was the bushes are really hard to replace, need to remove the rack, subframe, etc..
My car has about 150k miles, and the bushes were a little oval..
When I make a quick start I get a clunk kind of sound that appears to be from the area near the transmission shift lever on the console between the seats. If I really do a jack rabbit start, it will clunk repeatedly until I let up on the gas or the car gets up to speed.
Is this a broken Engine or Transmission mount? 2005 Cadillac SRX....
My 2007 Camry makes clunking noises when I turn the steering wheel to the left mostly. This happens most often when the weather is warm and hot but not during the winter time.
The noise seems to come only from around the steering wheel area inside my vehicle. Hence, I don't think it has to do with the CV Joints or anything like that but the steering wheel unit.
I recently had my manual transmission go out on my 2002 Elantra GLS. It has 208k miles and the tranny had been giving me shifting issues for years. It finally made some clunking and whining noises at certain speeds. I picked up a replacement tranny, but the car has sat in my garage for the last two months. I slowly worked on it over that time and have finally completed it. I went to start it up tonight and it idles normally for 1 second, then it revs up to about 5k. It does this over and over until I turn the car off, and a very hard to see white-ish smoke comes from the air intake tube as I have it only partially on for testing.
The car ran fine before hand. What could this be? I have never experienced this with a vehicle before and searching on the web only gives me links to people having idling and revving issues while at stop lights or on the freeway. The idle did used to stick around 2.5k RPM when I started it up from time to time. Although, a small blip of the throttle would set it back to its normal idle speeds. BTW, the engine runs well with no knocks and has great compression across all 4 cylinders.
My 20th just recently started making clunking noises around the front left wheel area. It sounds like when I let off the gas it sounds like something is shifting forward... I don't think it is the engine mounts I'm wondering if its something with the suspension. The suspension is the stock 20th suspension.
View 4 RepliesSo i just recently purchased my 2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 about a month ago. At first everything is great which it STILL is but lately I've discovered that I'm hearing a weird & SERIOUSLY IRRITATING noise/sound/rattle! Every time I drive between 10mph-40mph and it gets rapidly fast as I increase speed.. thats the RATTLE noise. I did my research and it said it can be a loose bolt or a loose heat shield underneath but I'd like some advice from Toyota Nation. Also when i make a slight turn I hear a weird clunking or some weird unexplainable noise. All in all this car is awesome .. smooth/FAST/comfy seats for me/agile/great on gas compared to my 2011 Camry 4 cylinder I had ..
