2007 Mercury Milan w/GPS Nav system. Nav DVD reader has become very noisey, high-speed ticking noise. Dealer says whole system must be replaced. Can just the Nav DVD reader be replaced? and if so who/where?
View 3 RepliesI have a 2009 Mercury Milan. Ever since I have had the car I have had a problem with the cruise control suddenly turning off. It is erratic and will happen usually once on a two hour trip on the highway day or night. And it completely turns off - no RESUME. It never puts up any codes that the dealer can see. The dealer will not do anything because they cannot duplicate the problem. They tried once on a short 5 mile drive but they would have to take it on the highway and drive it for at least one half hour to an hour. They said there were no similar problems reported through Mercury. They initially suggested that perhaps I was accidentally hitting the brake pedal but I have been acutely aware of where my feet are when it happens and it is not me. And anyway this would not explain the fact that it turns off completely. My warranty is going to run out in several months and I would like to get this fixed before it does.
View 8 RepliesI've got an '04 Pkg IX with about 68k miles on it.
I've noticed that at speeds of greater than 60mph there is a distinct ticking noise (like the sound a bicycle makes when you turn the wheel "tick tick tick"). The noise is coming from the front end, sounds like near the passenger area.
The minute you drop down to speeds of around 50 or less it goes away.
I'm probably going to have to take it in to the dealer since I've already had an indy look at it.
I dropped off my 2006 Mercury Milan at a local Ford dealer this morning to have an AC temperature chip replaced because my air was not cold and prior diagnostics determined the chip no longer functioned. This turned out to be quite a costly repair. I was told it took 9 hours of labor requiring the entire dashboard to be removed. After picking up my car, I started driving home and immediately noticed the steering wheel was angled about 45 degrees to the right while I was driving straight. I have never seen something like this (and my car has been out of alignment before). I took it back to Ford to tell them that the steering wheel was crooked while the tires were straight and the manager said she didn't know how this could have happened because they never even lifted the vehicle. What might be wrong? Silver lining...the AC works now.

View 8 RepliesMy 1993 5.0 liter bronco is making a strange ticking noise. when it's idling, and it ticks, the idle drops. then it will tick again and the idle will raise up. usually between the 600 to 1000 rpm range. it just started doing this and never did before.
View 8 RepliesThis started just today. I have a strange ticking noise coming from right behind my gauge cluster. The frequency of the ticking is tied directly to my speed. It begins when I drive off and slows to a stop when I stop (almost like a "baseball card in a bicycle spoke" sound, but just not as loud). What this might be? Could it have something to do with the speedometer? Odometer?
View 1 RepliesI have a tick in my 2001 V10, 190,000 (mostly easy) miles. I've changed oil/filter regularly at 3,000 mile intervals using Valvoline 5W20.
The tick seems to be on the passenger side of the engine, and is loudest when the engine is cold. It follows engine speed. The tick seems to be loudest as the engine transitions from acceleration to deceleration when I lift the throttle--I've NOT seen that posted before.
So, an exhaust manifold leak seems to be the most obvious? I installed a Banks Power Pack with Torque Tube headers in 2009 (about 90,000 miles ago) using thread lock compound on the supplied bolts and torqued to the instructions--I don't' remember the torque setting, but will look it up. I've listened to each exhaust port with a mechanic's stethoscope, all I hear is a smoothly running rotating assembly! Same result with the stethoscope on either side of the front cover (for timing chain slap.) NO tick through the stethoscope! I plan to check all the header bolts' torque this weekend, but don't really expect to find a problem. I will also scoot under the truck and recheck all the exhaust pipe clamps.
I've also listened to all the injectors--two of them (#3 and #4) were noticeably quieter than the other eight. But, none of them stood out as being particularly noisy. I've seen a couple of threads here that asked what a normal injector should sound like, but never an answer. How they should sound?
I've listened to each coil. I can hear a slight arc on #3. I believe the spring in the boot is not seated on the coil tab correctly (happened before.) I will correct that this weekend also. Nothing sounded like a loose plug, though I don't really know what that would sound like with the stethoscope.
What else could/should I check to avoid removing the valve/cam covers? (For cam follower or rocker trouble). I don't mind doing that, but don't want to go to the trouble and then find it wasn't necessary. I may spin on a Motorcraft filter (I'm just 800 miles into the last oil change now, I usually use Fram) but the tick stays with me until the engine is normal operating temperature, so I don't think it is from bleed back.
My parents have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, 100,845 miles. They change oil like a religion. It has under the hood ticking that increases and decreases with RPM. The ticking (tickity-tickity) sounds like when there is low oil. People have said,"You better put oil in there..."The oil is full. I can't tell if the sound is coming from inside the engine, or if something on the engine might be loose that is causing the ticking as the engine RPM changes. From what I can remember from auto shop in the 80's...it kind of sounds like valves/lifters.
Also, it has a strange road noise that I think is coming from the tires. It sounds and sort of feels like riding on knobby off road tires. I can put it in neutral and turn off the engine, and the noise remains and decreases as the speed does, so it is not from the engine.
I have a 1994 celica GT, 2.2 with a 5 speed. I thought I either had bad tire noise, or maybe a wheel bearing noise, I put the car up on jack stands, started the car and put it in gear, and the noise I have is a loud growling sound, which gets worse the faster the wheel spins. I took a 2x4 and stopped the passenger side tire (drive wheel) so the driver's side would spin, the noise went away. From what I can tell, or am guessing, the noise is coming from the trans. Could this be a bearing in the trans case? Of course I can't find an exploded view of the trans!
View 3 RepliesAt my 30,000 mile service about 6 weeks ago I reported to the service manager that the suspension seemed noisy at low speed over undulating side roads. They could not duplicate the noise. Now with the cold weather, the noise has increased considerably to the extent that my wife who claims never to hear any of the noises I obsess about, asked me what is that knocking noise
I have made an appointment at my dealership first thing on Monday and they are going to ride with me and if necessary use the "chassis ears".
From everything I have read it has to be control arm bushings or the air suspension. I think the fact it has worsened considerably now the temperature has dropped eliminates the brake pad rattle possibility.
I have a 2009 Gen. II with 48000 miles on it and it started having a high pitch noise when driving. Thought it was wind noise at first but does it at low speeds also. When you roll the right passenger side window down you can hear it much louder sounds like it is coming from the right front.

The stability and handling at high speeds are excellent (140km/h or 87mph). However, the most annoying thing at that speed is the wind noise. Its gushing all over the car.
I have a 09 Corolla with low mileage (33,000 miles). It drove without a problem until recently.
About 1 month ago I started noticing some rattling noise at high speed (>50 mph) coming from the engine compartment on the passenger side. the noise seems to get more frequent the faster i go and disappears when the speed drops below 40 mph. It is not loud but still noticeable. The car itself does not shake.
I drove through a snow storm before the noise happened. not sure if this has any thing to do with it.
My Prius c has always made a high speed whirling noise when braking but now at speeds of 42 to 46 MPH this high speed whirling noise is there and when you are just coasting have a noisy transmission or is this something I should be getting to the dealer with.
EVCT transmission noise ....
High pitched whirring noise when the climate control fan (compressor?) is running at low speeds. It doesn't seem to matter if the air is on or not. I'd like to know what it cost to fix and if it is covered under most extended warranties.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with AT and V6 with 70k miles on it with pretty much everything loaded. The car has been trouble free since I got it 3 months ago. However,the past month, the engine has been making a high pitched "squeaking" noise whenever im at a constant speed. If I accelerate or brake, the noise goes away.
I also noticed today that it stays constant no matter what when I am in 4WD mode, but when I am in 2WD it behaviors like I describe earlier. I had the Toyota dealership do a complete lube service and they found two of the belts were "dry" and re-lubricated them however the problem persisted. The noise doesn't happen when im in idle or at a stop either. The noise seems to emanate from the right side of the engine.
Also, do 4Runners have a noisy brake cylinder system? Almost every time I brake I hear this slight "Pssssssssssssssssssss Tick!" sound from the engine. The car brakes just fine and the Toyota dealership found nothing out of the ordinary but i've never heard a car break that noisey before. This a 4Runner trait? What could be causing these two noises, especially the gawd awful squeaking noise from the engine. It never made that noise until just one day..
I have a 93 Ford explorer, when I start off at a high speed I hear a rattle noise, when I'm going up a hill it starts to make the rattling noise and the check engine light comes on, also when going up the hill when this happens I'm going around 110 and it kinda like powers out slows down on its own to 80, when I have the pedal down all the way you can hear I think over drive kicks in the rattling stops but no power and when I release the pedal a little the rattling noise comes back. Also the RPM is at 4 when i have the pedal all the way down.
View 1 RepliesI recently purchased a 2004 Mercury Sable with about 112K miles on it. I am having some troubles with my car and I'm not sure where to start first in repairing it. I recently took my car to a mechanic because accelerating on the highway or going up hills made my car sound engine run very hard and loud, my RPMs went up to 3K and my speed dropped to 15 mph (which is a disaster when you're on the highway and hit a steep grade). My car absolutely cannot do any sort of hill so the mechanic suggested that either he or I replace one of the catalytic converters. He showed me which one he thought was throwing the error code. I replaced that catalytic converter and I thought my problems were solved because I could accelerate without difficulty.
However, a day later I tried to drive it up a hill and got the exact same response as before. RPMS jump up and the speed drops down to 15 mph and I've just about got the pedal to the floor. I have friends who repair cars as a hobby and they disagree with each other where I should go from here. One friend says replace the muffler and resonator (possible blockage that cannot bear any stress under a load...like going up a hill). Another friend says replace the third catalytic converter (one was replaced when we bought the car by the dealership, and I just replaced another one). He says when one catalytic converter goes the others are not far behind.
Well, Car is in the shop to get the trans looked at. Loud whining noise in 1, 2, 3. corresponds with engine speed, not road speed. I think input shaft bearings are shot. Going to get a new clutch and throwout bearing while it's out. 116K miles.
