Mazda :: Electronic Controls Scrambled - Radio Making Static Sound When Went Over A Bump
Mar 15, 2013
In Jan my radio began to make a static sound when I went over a bump, and then would go off. I discovered I could turn off the engine, and the radio would come back on. Eventually it stopped working altogether. A few weeks later, the turn signals stopped working, then the speedometer/odometer, then the cabin light, then the brake lights. Sometimes the windshield wiper goes on in the 'clean' cycle where water is squirted onto the windshield, and the wiper wipes. This feature has never worked before.
I have owned the vehicle (Mazda pickup 1998 B2300) for 2 years. I found soon after buying the vehicle there is a 'Timer Control Module' circuit board behind the radio in the dash which, when unplugged, will disable the functions mentioned above. Is this board the problem??

So a few months ago my 2009 Camry all stock stereo stopped playing. (Been a while and I pulled the fuse so I don't remember if the head units face lit up)one morning I got in it and as soon as I cranked on the ignition all I hear was static from the speakers even though the radio was off. I looked it up on google back then & remember seeing a topic elsewhere were the person had the same exact issue and said one of the trunk torsion bars came loose & whacked something in trunk compartment that screwed up the stereo. I checked my trunk & sure enough, one of the bars had came loose on one side.

I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota. A couple of years ago I was driving along and the radio just cut out, with no problems prior. I didn't go over train tracks or anything that would jar it, etc. It continued to not work for the next 6-8 months or so, but would occasionally cut in and out. After a period of time the radio suddenly began working again. The radio continued to work for a year or more. A month ago, I'm driving down the road and it again, cuts out. But now I can somewhat hear the radio amid the static. The best way to describe it is what happens to the reception when traveling under high voltage wires. Antenna is secure.

B5 03 Passat Wagon - I am having a problem pulling in am reception on the radio. I am getting significant static. When I remove the antenna mast, I get no reception. When I put it back on, reception returns but has static. Static gets worse when I put my had on the antenna mast and resolves to just regular static (along with radio program) when my hand is take off. Non existent reception when going under underpasses, drive through windows, or near power lines.

I just purchased a 2009 gs 350 a few months ago with 40k on it fully certified. I quickly noticed that most of the fm radio stations were static even local ones that I usually listen to all the time. Some stations would go in and out of static but too annoying for me to deal with. Ive tried turning random things on and off to see if it changes the reception but nothing works or makes it worse.
At first I thought I'd just deal with it, but then I realized how much radio I actually listen to. So I brought it to the local lexus dealer a few weeks ago to see if they could fix it. They replaced the head unit once with no success, so they ordered another one and replaced the original with it. They had the car for two weeks and when I picked the car up they said that all the stations come in except a couple.. Turns out it seems to be exactly the same as it was before, maybe slightly better. I want this fixed completely with no static at all especially since the car is certified and most things are covered.
I think it could only be one of three things the head unit, the rear windshield (where the fm antenna is located) or the wiring in between the two. Since they already replaced the head unit twice I think its safe to say its not the head unit even though they said they tested it somehow and that's what the problem was......

I have had the new Santa Fe for about a 45 days now. It is a 2.0T model with awd and no nav. So the basic radio.
Three times I have now had the issue with the radio. Right after the vehicle is started the radio shows it being in a diagnostic mode and loud static coming over the speakers.
Turn the vehicle off and back on and it is gone. I have asked my wife to take a picture if it happens again.

When driving my 2005 Prius with the radio turned on to any AM station, I cannot listen to any AM broadcasts, as they are filled with static, hissing and whirring noise. The static becomes worse as I accelerate or brake, and stops when I stop at a red light or Stop sign. There is no such problem with FM stations. What is causing this? Is it my spark plugs?

I have 61,800 practically trouble free miles on my 06 V8. Pleasure to drive every time I get in. About a week ago I started getting thick, static on all of the AM radio stations. Looked on the roof to make sure the antenna was there and it was. The next day I noticed that the static disappears entirely when I hit the breaks and then returns when I let up off of the breaks. 100% reproducible.

This may sound crazy, but there are a few good sports talk radio shows on AM radio that I can't get. The problem is the AM stations on my car radio all come in with a ton of static. If I hold the antenna, the sound is great. If I move the antenna around, eventually I can get it pretty clear I also replace the antenna with a after-market one for looks more than anything, but the static issue remains.
My car is a 2003 VW Passat.

When the radio is on AM and the car is running, there is static . When the car is turned off and the radio remains on, the static disappears. We have had the antenna replaced, the radio replaced and all worked for a while but now the static is back. 2006 Buick Rendezvous...

Yea, so early in the morning I turn on the radio am, and touch the heater/cool and the static is really bad. It's bad before I touch the heater on but is worse during.

So I have a Volkswagen GTI (2003). A while ago i had to replace the radio/stereo (but not the speakers).
Now one or both of the speakers (I'm not sure which it is. I can't tell from the drivers seat) in the back right side of the car make a rattling static noise. its fairly loud and it makes the sound whether i have the music turned up or not. and it doesn't constantly make the sound -- its irregular but frequent. Changing the volume doesn't seem to effect it, like i said it rattles whether i have the volume up or on zero. however the sound stops completely when i turn the stereo off and when the car is not moving.
When the sound started i had been listening to the music pretty loud (though certainly not as loud as i'd ever had it). i was also driving...um...over the speed limit...on a bumpy country road.

So for a while now I have noticed that I often have a great deal of static on my radio during my ride to work. I was stumped because it only happened occasionally and affected every channel, AM and FM. Today I discovered what was changing to cause the static. Whenever I have the rear window defroster on, there is static on the radio. Turning the rear defroster off, stops the static immediately. I have checked all other electric devices in conjunction with the radio, and it is only caused by the defroster. My understanding is that the antenna is built into the rear window, so the cause and effect seems obvious.

So I have the dreaded "rear defroster/radio static interference" issue on my 2011 Corolla LE. I turn on my radio and all is good. I turn on my rear window defroster and my FM reception goes away.I am pretty sure I did it to myself because it only started happening after I cleaned the rear window with some windshield washing fluid and a paper towel. I do have a knack for being a bit gruff on things and people unintentionally so I guess I am not surprised. I must have damaged the elements of the rear defroster in the process of cleaning the window. I should have left it dirty.
Anyway, I've read many posts detailing how breaks in the rear defroster grid can introduce EMI that effects the factory radio antennae in the rear window. Some of the answers I have seen suggested are:
1) replace the rear window (really?)
2) use a repair kit. URL...
3) completely replace the the rear defroster grid with an after market kit. URL...
4) replace the factory antennae with an after market unit that is not internally mounted
5) live with it
Are there any other options that I haven't found? If the root cause is the rear defroster, the repair kit seems like the way to go (even if it looks like an annoying task to perform upside down in such tight and cramped spaces). Might fix the defroster if its broken but will it resolve the EMI problem ...

I've been having some issues with my FM radio for a while, I had really bad static when using the rear defogger but they have since replaced my back window under warranty and that has fixed it. Though, I'm still getting static or fuzz when my foot is off the gas and I'm either coasting and/or braking. When the signal is weaker it's really bad.

I get a very annoying high pitched electronic whine on an AM radio station that I like. It occurs all the time. Its like a grounding problem. It is so bad I can't listen to the station in my 2009 LS. Only one station, AM 810, has the issue. I don't have ML. Just a regular radio. No other radio issues.

2004 Prius and I have lots of static in the AM radio. Some days it is worse than others mostly I am unable to listen to it. If the car is in accessory, the static in the AM radio is not there. As I drive the car the static will increase or decrease based on the proximity to the overhead wires. There are days however where the static will be hardly noticeable. I've owned the car since 2006 and have always had this issue.

I have a 2007 Honda Civic 2 dr. A couple years ago the manufacturer cell phone charger was blown in a few days of use with the cigarette lighter. The manufacturer replacement was next blown, and then a cheap off-brand was blown. Last fall, turning on the rear defroster began causing static interference on the FM stations. Several months later, I noticed that use of the cigarette lighter as a cell phone charger also caused radio static.
Next week, the rear windshield will be removed and replaced during a body repair. Should I ask for a replacement windshield, or just for attention to the connection with the electric? What else can be done about either of these causes of FM static?

2003 Ford Crown Victoria with only 49K miles. This was my great aunt's and this car sat a lot(no garage) She has passed and I need to sell but the radio won't play. CD and cassette are fine. Radio station appears on display but all I get is static. If I wiggle the wires on the back windshield I get reception sometimes but not often. I have taken wires off and cleaned terminals but that did not improve reception at all.
