Lincoln - Towncar :: 1996 - Idle Roughly After Sitting For 10 Months
Nov 29, 2013
Bought a car that has been sitting for 10 Months. Starts up really easy, idles ruff. Should I drive it to clear it out? or ? 1996 Lincoln Towncar left in great shape just over 100,000 miles.

4.6 engine had blown head gasket. right side. Pulled heads had checked for cracks and resurfaced. Reinstalled heads, but I still have a problem with oil pressure on right side. Chain doesnt seem to tighten and lifters rattle. There is good base oil pressure.

1998 Lincoln Town car will not sit level side to side. Was sitting lower on driver side with air bags , i went to coil springs and still has about 3 inch difference side to side . Driver side sits normal now and level with front but passenger side real high . Seems to be an equalizer that pivots on the 3rd member that keeps both sides moving together in anti roll motion . I wonder if it is splined and can be adjusted there ?

I have a 1998 Lincoln Town Car with about 350,000 miles on it. This morning I sensed a slightly rough idle when I started it up and let it sit in the driveway. While idling I plugged in a scan tool and after a few minutes it showed a P0306, a misfire in cylinder 6. I know there could be a few causes of this but my past experience has been a bad ignition coil (this car has the coils on each plug).
Over the years I've had 3 coils go bad, all giving the same rough idle symptom and P030x, where x was the cylinder number. Replacing the coils solved the problem each time.
So this morning I assumed it would probably be the same. On my way to the auto parts store (4 miles), I monitored the computer, it kept throwing a P0306 (cylinder 6) and I kept clearing the code. About 2 blocks from the store, the car seemed to be running a bit rougher. When I pulled into the lot, I got a P0307 code (and no P0306). Hmm. Well, I bought a new coil and replaced coil 6. I then sat in the lot and idled it and after a few minutes it threw the P0307 again. I cleared it a few times and it came back.
I assumed there was about 0 chance that a second coil could go out within minutes of another (assumption from a car tinkerer, not a professional), so rather than buying another coil, I drove it home to do some further testing. On the way home, it kept throwing the P0307 and nothing about P0306.
So at home, I swapped coil 7 and 5, idled it for a few minutes, and, sure enough, it threw a P0305 (the problem had moved to cylinder 5, following the coil). This indicates to me that I had 2 bad coils?!?
So my question is whether it's possible, or even common, to lose two coils at virtually the same time. I should also point out that before today I did not notice rough idling and there were no computer codes set. I also thought maybe it's possibly a problem developing with an ignition module (but I'm not sure if my car even has one).
Anyway, it was late and I have not replaced the second coil. I did do a couple other tests. I measured the resistance on the primary of the new coil, as well as 5, 6, and 7 coils. They were all close to 0 ohms. The resistance of the secondary ranged between 5k and 8k depending on the coil. Out of curiosity, I also did a final swap of the original coil 6 with the "faulty" coil 7 now in 5 (follow me?) and it still throws a P0305, indicating both the old 6 and old 7 coils are, indeed bad. Another note is that both "bad" coils are about the same age (maybe 150k-200k miles on each), so they're not newer ones.
Does this all make sense? Should I go ahead and replace the other coil and see what happens, or should I check something else?

I purchased a new battery yesterday because the old one went dead. The car has been sitting for a month, upon completion of installing the battery, I cranked the car but it wouldn't turn over.

Replacing oil pan. It is a 1997 town car with the V8 4.6.The other mechanic told them that the pan is rotting through and it's not just a weeping gasket.
I have not had the chance to get this car to my shop, so I have not gotten a look at it.I'd just like to know what I will get involved with before I see the owners and the car.
how extensive this will be to get the engine up high enough to pull the old pan out.I'm hoping that I can just unbolt the motor mounts and jack the motor up a bit if need be.

I have a 2003 Lincoln Towncar. About once a month when I get gas and try to start after, the car is "DEAD"!!! The battery is OK and all the gauges come on but no sound-not a click! I have replaced the battery and the starter (twice), but my mechanic doesn't have a clue. After about 5-10 minutes the car will start.

I have a 2006 Lincoln zephyr. 3.0l v6. With fwd. I bought the car off Craig's list, from a private owner.
When I got it, back brakes were complete crap. Looks like never changed. Put on new rotors, new pads. The car was still vibrating, and making noises from the tires. Changed front brakes and rotors. Car was jerking when braking or at really slow speeds (0-15mph) even the jerking goes away, the vibration was still there. Went to ntb today, they changed my oil, rotated tires, and balanced front tires. The jerking gradually got better, I can't say it's there at all. As for vibration, still there, and tires in back are still a little loud. Someone told me my rim is bent? That does sound like something that could be causing this?? Another thing I have noticed is that the jerking in the car and the vibration get worse after driving for a while or when my sound system has been on for a while. Another thing today, after the oil change, I got home, and noticed a clicking sound coming from the engine. Seems as if the clicking starts after the car has been driven a little bit, then stays on until you turn it off and let it sit for a while
What it could be? IS MY CAR drive able?

I was minding my own business, when my air conditioner started blowing hot air. I took the car to my mechanic, and it was working fine. So--sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Why?

I have a 2001 Lincoln Towncar with 122k on it. The heater went out this winter and I took it to a guy that replace the blower motor. The blower was not the problem. He then replaced the main control unit in the dash. That made the blower work on all speeds as I can hear it running. The problem is, there is NO air movement from any of the vents on any settings. When switched to def, vent, heat I can hear it switching but nothing happens and I have a complete lack of airflow. I looked for a filter on the firewall that may be blocked and it appears to be missing, or this car doesn't require one?

I have a 1994 lincoln towncar, 55,000 original miles. I accidently put 3 gallons of E 85 in it. Then added 20 gallons of mid grade unleaded. Will my engine be damaged?

My dad's 1993 Lincoln Town Car runs great but the fan for heat or AC only will run at full blast or nothing. Makes it difficult to drive when it's real hot or cold out. Can this be remedied without costing an arm and a leg? The car is 21 yrs. old and not worth a lot.

When the car is in drive, just about every time I press on the gas pedal, I hear a squeak, supposedly from the gas pedal. I think the only place this could squeak is the pivot of the gas pedal. I have tried numerous time to lubricate this pivot but no success. The last step would be to purchase the replacement part (gas pedal assembly) and install.

Often as I slow down and start turning a corner, mostly to the right, my 1998 Lincoln Town Car stalls. I have to pull off to the side of the road, put it in park and then restart it, which it does every time.

I was driving my Towncar and I've noticed that it chimes 5 times then pauses. Then it does it again. I don't notice any warning lights on my dash board.

The car hadn't been used in a while, and I stupidly stepped on the parking brake. Now it won't release. It's a push on/push off, but it won't clear even when pushing it to the floor. How do I get it to release? I don't know a lot about cars.

My 79 Lincoln Town Car vibrates in the front end during hard braking and braking from more than 30-35mph. There is no vibration in the rear, during turning or felt in the wheel. Is this wheel bearings, rotors, steering linkage, tire belts slipping or suspension? She has four wheel disc with early version of anti lock on rear. Brake fluid level is good with no leakage. Tires are near new but sat for long time parked in garage.

This just happened today. The car will no longer shift pack into park, all the way up the car is still in reverse. All other gears are working fine. What could be wrong with it?
