I own a Lexus IS250 which on the gas cap says you must use high octane gas. My question is, do you REALLY have to use High octane everytime you gas up or can you safely use mid grade? Say every other time without damaging anything?
View 11 RepliesI now have about 39k miles on 2011. Along the way I think I have added six 2.5gal jugs of DEF. About 1k miles ago I got the low DEF notice and added a 2.5gal jug and am already back down to 250 miles of DEF! I don't see any signs of a leak with the engine running or not. Dropped it off at the dealership this eve for an AM service appointment.

When this happens, I can watch my voltage gauge drop down to 12v or so. Was thinking a Capacitor would solve the issue.
A question during the show this week (1/22/2011) was whether it used more gasoline to idle in gear or in neutral with an automatic transmission. The answer was it makes little difference. I contend the engine uses more fuel idling in neutral. The reason is the increased level of partial vacuum within the intake manifold means more air and fuel will be drawn into the engine. When the vehicle is in gear, the engine idles slower, less vacuum, less fuel used.

View 12 RepliesWas wondering if there would be any negative effect on the performance (or engine) of my V8 Touareg if I start filling up with 90 Octane instead of the more expensive 93 Octane available locally in Puerto Rico. We only have 87, 90 and 93 Octane to choose from. There is a German warning label on the inside of the filler door that says something about 91 Octane. I don't read German, but I'm assuming that it means not to use anything lower than 91 Octane fuel.

View 1 RepliesI just recently brought my 2006 subaru outback (v6) to the shop. The men, whom I've know and trust, told me there's too much carbon in the engine - it's got 80k on it - and that I should use Super the next two times I fill the tank. I went to an Irving station and put in Premium Octane. I only put in 3 gallons, and now the gas jerks upon pressing the gas. The check engine light came on, the SPORTS light is blinking fast and the CRUISE light is blinking as well. It sounds bad and when I put it in/out of park, I hear a little bit of grinding. Is this common for putting in new higher quality gas? Am I destroying something?? Should I not have put in premium?

I know 91 isn't needed in this car but I like filling up with good fuel every once in a while.
After filling up my check engine light came on right away, also my engine wont allow me to go over 3k RPM.
Why did this happen and what can I do to fix it?
Have an increase of coolant usage after APR flash??? Coolant levels were never an issue until post stage 1 flash, conservative driver here, open it up very rarely.
I love the software its a totally different car post flashing, but just curious if this is a common issue or if there should be any concerns involving this issue...
I have a 1999 Toyota Camry It runs perfect. It has app. 141,000 miles . It uses about 1 quart of oil every 800 to 1000 miles. Why it sees to use more oil if i drive in the mountains and use the transmission as a brake by downshifting to preserve brakes.. There is no smoke I can see and the oil usage seems to go up to about 1 quart of oil every 600 to 800 miles if i drive in the mountains this way just a couple of times.

It's just a slight jerk nothing serious. The brand is Kwik trip gas. I find the the car runs best on 93 octane bp, Mobil, shell, or Cenex.
View 3 RepliesI noticed that on long trips, the a/c will just stop blowing all of a sudden. However, if I turn it off and 'give it a break' it will start blowing normally again. This usually happens after about 3hrs of continuous a/c usage. The entire a/c systems already been replaced about 5k miles ago. What's causing this? FWIW, I just bought the car a few weeks ago and figured since the a/c had already been replaced that I was in the clear...guess I was wrong

Once we charged the battery, everything seems to be just fine except the fuel usage gauge keeps jumping around at random. I reset the trip meters but that didn't do anything. What to do? View 10 RepliesI have been having a brake drag problem with my '89 Jeep Wrangler. I posted this problem previously when I thought it was an E-brake issue. I did a rear drum spring set change. The problem persisted, so I asked the local auto parts store and they said it could be a faulty master cylinder which I just replaced. The brakes felt fine for the first 1/2 hour driving, then the pedal started feeling harder to push and the brakes were dragging again. I jacked the car up and removed the tires to find both front calipers tight on the rotor, the rears would spin. With someone pressing the pedal, I did not notice any caliper movement.

I ask since there is a switch to turn this on and off, and I wonder why. My experience driving fire trucks in a previous life was that the Jake Brake was always enabled (I do not recall there being any way to turn it off).
I suppose that on icy roads, it is probably a good idea to not have it on, but that is all I could come up with. Am I missing something?
I have a 1994 ford ranger with the 4cyl. My problem is that it uses 1-2 quarts of oil every couple of days and I cannot find a oil leak. I have pressure washed the whole underside of the truck and degreased the engine and i can not find a oil leak. It dose not smoke all the time but every now and then there will be a little puff of smoke out the exhaust and then every now and then every now and then (only when i stop) it will come a huge cloud of smoke but when it does it. I cannot ever tell where it comes from. But the truck runs fine and dosn't miss or anything...

I have a 2001 Chevy Prizm - a Toyota Corolla clone. It has about 50K miles and uses oil at the rate of about 1 quart every couple hundred miles. You'd think if the oil was being burned, it would leave a trail of smoke behind the car - or at least, the rear of the car would be covered with oil. Or if there was a leak, the underside of the car would be covered with it.
Nope, neither of those cases. No drips in the driveway, the underside is clean, no smoke. The only trace is that around the exhaust is a small amount of oily dirt - but it seems only slightly excessive - certainly not in proportion to the amount I am using. Where the oil is going?
