My wife has a 03 kia spectra that won't shift into 3rd gear[Automatic] when it's cold. The trans. filter and fluid have been change and it was fine for about 3 months until today. Talked to a dealer and they had no clue other than to get a new trans. The car has 105,000 mi.so I really don't wanna spend that much $ on it if I don't have to

View 2 Replies2011 TDi 6 Speed (Sportwagon) with problems shifting into 2nd? Mine is currently in the shop under investigation for a balky shift when cold. The tech says it's not right, but then they find another vehicle in inventory with the same issue...currently waiting on a VW engineer.
View 16 RepliesStarted noticing an issue with my trans awhile ago, the other day it stopped shifting out of first when cold. It's a 1.8T auto 5 speed tiptronic, it's the Jatco 09A. I know the shifting problem is the solenoids and it doesn't look that hard to swap them out. The trans shop said it looks like there is slippage on gears 2-4 and the fluid is toast. Looking at replacing or rebuilding, shop said 4-5 grand, how easy would it be to swap in a used trans? And what kind of issues would I be looking at?
View 1 RepliesMy 2009 Kia Spectra won't start when the weather is extremely cold. I live in NH, right on the coast, and the car's parking spot affords it no protection from strong winds that we get here and therefore low temps. There was a cold spell with winds roughly a month ago and the following morning the car wouldn't start. the electronics inside still worked, but it didn't start. When it warmed up later that day it started up normally. the same series of events has been repeating itself over this last bit of cold weather, so I replaced the battery (upgrading from 550 CCA to 650 CCA). II went to start it this morning and once again, it won't start. I've had an oil change with all the fluids checked and replaced or filled just a couple days ago. The car will start in the morning with jumper cables. What might be going on here?
View 19 RepliesI have a 2004 KIA Spectra with an automatic transmission which now has slightly over 100k miles. It has been a very reliable car up until last year when it stopped shifting into third gear. It shifts easily from P to R to N to D, shifting easily to 1st and 2nd, yet when the speed is met to allow changing to 3rd it becomes neutral, slipping only back to second when the speed of the car slows. My question: Is this something electrical or mechanical?

View 3 RepliesLike the title says, I sometimes experience a long shift from 1st to 2nd. When the transmission is cold, it seems to shift fine from 1st to 2nd. It isn't until it is warmed up that I get a looong shift. It winds up,,,,, then it shifts. I have no problems in other gears.
View 10 RepliesMy 2000 Honda CRV starts when cold, however I must continue to give it gas and it will die when I shift into Reverse or Drive. If I rev the engine, I can keep it running and it will run OK once warmed up. When I get it going, the engine will stall if I attempt to let it idle. All problems resolve themselves once the engine is warm. Several mechanics have seen the problem, but cannot determine a solution other than to let the engine warm up. I live in Boston and the combination of having to work my way out of a parking space and the enginge continously stalling when I shift into R or D is making life difficult?
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 Toyota Camry, automatic trans, 172k miles, still in great shape and has been well cared for with standard preventative maintenance. When it's cold (<30F), the transmission will not shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear, can't tell which. It reaches about 40mph before the RPMs approach 3000, and I dare not push it harder. Let the car warm up or drive it for 5 minutes and everything is fine. This has happened the last two winters. The car runs great other than this, which means there is no apparent problem 8 months of the year. I had the transmission fluid flushed and filter changed last year thinking it may improve, but there was no change. What could be the culprit?

The weather has gotten extremely cold here and when I start driving in the morning or from any cold starts the transmission doesn't shift out of second gear. After I drive it a mile or so and slow almost to a stop it will shift normally until I park it.
It has 125000 miles on it and I hope this isn't a serious problem because it is a great car and has been well taken care of. Looks brand new on the inside and out and I've never had any problems until now.
I have been having an issue with my 4-5 gear shift under hard acceleration and know that a rebuild is due soon but I was wondering if any high performance kit available with all the clutches and friction discs needed to rebuild.
View 6 RepliesSo i was trying to adjust my freinds shift linkage on his o2j and i got a little ahead of myself and forgot to put the shift tower in the home position before making the adjustment. after i realized you can't shift into second ( either that or 2nd and 4th are extremely close together now and feel like the same gear ). I try to get it in home position even with the cables off ( did this for experimentation) and still wouldn't go into home position...meh. still have all the other gears including reverse .

The problem: Very hard to get a smooth shift from gear to gear. Trust me, I know how to drive, but I can always feel the car shifting into a different gear if you know what I'm saying. On my friend's bone stock Jetta, I just let the clutch out without gas in between shifts and you don't feel a thing.
On my car, you feel EVERYTHING. People have told me the light flywheel will make the ride more uncomfortable in many ways, especially since the RPMs drop much quicker in between shifts than stock.
I've noticed a problem with the .:R now that it's getting really cold up here in the Northeast. When the car has been sitting for a while in the cold (like overnight) the first 1st => 2nd shift is rough, almost like the car slammed the clutch in at the wrong RPM without allowing for any slippage. This is my first winter with the .:R so I'm wondering if this is normal or not. She's gotta go in for her 20k mile maintenance soon so I'll probably ask them about it then too.

View 2 RepliesToday my camry suddenly won't shift to 4th gear, so at low speeds, up to 40 mph, rpm reads 1.7 to 2, if i try to accelerate faster, the rpm goes up until 4.5 maybe at around 70 mph, poor acceleration and the driving feels heavy and unnatural.
I replaced the engine mounts a couple of weeks ago after waiting for about a year to do that, not sure if the two things are connected.
I get a hard shift into second gear, it jerks into 2nd but not all the time. I only notice it after driving on the freeway for several miles. It has 60,000 original miles. Service Engine Soon light come on after the hard shifts with a transmission fault code. I reset the Engine light and let it set 20 or so minutes and it shifts like new.

I have an automatic 1992 940 GL and it has been almost a year since the head gasket blew in the car. The gaskets and everything have been replaced as well as the fuel filter, transmission pulley, and timing belt. The car seems to run fine except for a small problem with the gears. When driving it's like it doesn't want to shift into the next gear unless you let off the gas a little bit which then it shifts over fine and it does this for all for gears. It has also recently started back to stalling out at a stop light or stop sign but very rarely.
View 1 RepliesMy beautiful 1990 Volvo 240 will not shift into 4th gear! It is an automatic. The OD light will go on and off and I can hear it click when I turn it on. I just noticed that when getting on the highway it seemed as if the RPM was a little too high so I started paying more attention to which gear it was in and noticed today that it stays in 3rd gear.
I have already replaced the fuse #11. With the OD seemingly working fine, should I mess with the relay?
My Toyota 2010 Prius has a strange starting problem. Once in a while the shift gear will not go into D or R, display keeps saying start the car from P and foot on the brake. After several tries and waits in between the car starts OK.
